Cemetery Challenge helps people explore local history By Tony Carton
CORRESPONDENT
As fall colors fade to become crunchy leaves on an afternoon’s stroll and the air begins to chill, organizers at the Stockton Heritage Museum have come up with an educational and fun activity for the whole family. Museum Board Chair Ann Coppernoll said her board had been discussing the legacy of the Ladies Union
Cemetery in Stockton and those conversations eventually turned to what folks might learn if they visited the cemetery grounds. How did the cemetery come about? What was the Ladies Union? Who is buried there and what were their roles in the early days of the village? And so, with those teaching moments in mind, the museum board conceived the Cemetery Challenge. “The list of names came up of peo-
ple who helped found the town, or were important in the town in its early goings on,” Coppernoll said. “We also compiled an interesting list of little tidbits for people to find while they experience our history.” She said the challenge is just getting underway, but the response has been positive.

Virus mitigations tighten again By Jerry Nowicki CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS
Region 1 of the state’s COVID-19 mitigation plan has entered a new tier of virus mitigations as Gov. JB Pritzker warned last week that “we are now headed into a peak that is beyond, potentially, where we were in March and April.”
“This pandemic is the greatest challenge that many of us have experienced in our lifetimes,” Pritzker said during a St. Clair County news conference Thursday. “And when it comes to managing this pandemic, these mitigations are our best tools to find our way through to the other side.” Region 1, which includes Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties, saw its positivity rate increase to 11.9 percent, according to the most recent
