Put your pumpkins to good use this fall By Tony Carton

CORRESPONDENT

As Halloween approaches questions are raised about the future of that big ol’ orange thing you and the kids carved, stuck a candle in and put out on the front stoop. You may ask yourself: How did it get here? What will I do with it now? How do I work this? Well, there’s no need for stress. It’s the same as it ever was and here are answers to some of those questions. University of Illinois educator Stanley (Jay) Solomon said Jack-O’Lantern-type pumpkins are usually grown in garden settings. “We also see a lot of that type of pumpkin grown by specialty farmers,” he said. “We’re seeing a number of operations that feature apple orchards or even pumpkin patches

and corn mazes that also have a field of pumpkins and you can actually go out in the field and pick your own pumpkin.” Solomon said the type of pumpkin used for food is also grown in fields, but using a different method of cultivation. “They are a little more labor intensive than some crops,” he said. They are a vegetable crop, so there is more hand work or specialized equipment work involved with them. They are a vine crop so you need a clean area to start, but they put up a pretty good fight against the weeds once they get established. “ He said pumpkins are, for lack of a better term, temperamental. “You need plenty of water, but not

Fourth-grade Glow Day was one the activities during No Worksheet Week at Pearl City Elementary School.

Students leave worksheets behind during special week During the week of Oct. 5 through Oct. 9, Pearl City Elementary School teachers and students participated in a No Worksheet Week Challenge encouraged by Superintendent Michael Schiffman. The activities and projects were designed to engage students in other ways other than using worksheets and workbooks. “This new challenge was created so our students could learn through different methods while having fun during this unprecedented COVID school year,” according to a school news release. “The students will carry these memories for years to come from what our staff planned for them. The Pearl City staff is applauded for the many hours of planning they poured into this week to benefit our students.” Some examples of No Worksheet Week activities included: • Sixth-graders in Janet Rauch’s class completed graphic organizers for social studies in the place of answering questions in the book and doing worksheets. Students also participated in a class discussion about the social studies content and the novel they’re reading. • Second-graders in Judy Robinson’s room worked together on a Cinderella “escape” project. Students had to collaborate, communicate and solve different dilemmas throughout the escape challenge. Each student had their own assigned task and worked with others to get Cinderella to “escape.” • The fourth-grade classes of Kayleigh Jones and Allison Brouhard had Glow Day on Oct. 7. Jones and Brouhard used the fluorescent glows and black lights to provide a new learning environment for the students. Both the students and teachers dressed specially for the occasion.
