Orangeville American Legion and Auxiliary to host Chili and Soup Supper The 15th Annual Orangeville

American Legion and Auxiliary Chili and Soup Supper will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Orangeville Village Hall, 104 North Church Street, Orangeville.

The soups being served are chili, ham and bean, and vegetable beef.

There will be ham, turkey and cheese sandwiches, as well as pickles, olives and cheese, plus an assortment of desserts. Coffee and milk will be served.

Take outs will also be available.

The tickets are available in advance from any Orangeville Legion member or at the door. Adults are $7, children 6-10 years are $4 and children under 6 years are free.

Lena-Winslow Animal Science class attends World Dairy Expo

Members of the Lena-Winslow Animal Science class attended the World Dairy on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Madison’s Alliant Energy Center.

For over five decades, the global dairy industry has been meeting in Madison, Wis. for World Dairy Expo.

Crowds of nearly 75,000 people from more than 100 countries attended the annual event last year and similar crows are expected for the week-long event this year. The theme for the expo this year was “Discover New Dairy Worlds.” Students toured the award-winning Trade Show which features more than 850 companies, colleges and farms in addition to having the opportunity to watch the best dairy cows in the world compete against one another. The students had to complete a scavenger hunt as their assignment for the day where they asked various company and farm representatives questions as well as looking up information about the dairy industry.

Leafing through science

The fifth graders at Pearl City Elementary School are taking some time to study leaves. They have studied various shapes, margins, and arrangements of leaves in their classrooms. They have investigated leaf parts. They have extended their knowledge by creating a leaf booklet. This is their own private collection of various leaves from deciduous trees. The project is due in October, but some students have their books in early. They will treasure these projects for years to come.

The Pearl City Servant Leaders held a Pink Night o n Oct. 3.

They had a raffle, bake sale and a 50/50 drawing to raise $450 which will be donated to an area woman battling breast cancer.

Citizens State Bank President and CEO Fritz Kuhlmeier to retire Citizens State Bank announces that after 28 years of dedicated service, Frederick “Fritz” Kuhlmeier will retire as bank President and CEO in April 2018. Kuhlmeier will continue to serve as President and CEO of First Lena Corporation, the bank’s holding company, and will remain a member of Citizens State Bank’s Board of Directors.

Under Kuhlmeier’s leadership, Citizens State Bank has prospered through strategic planning, acquisitions, and organic growth, expanding from $50 Million to $250 Million in total assets and from one location to three total branches in Lena, Stockton, and Freeport.

Kuhlmeier has demonstrated a focus of community service and involvement by serving on boards of the Lena Economic Development Corporation, Northwest Illinois Development Alliance (NIDA), The Highland Community College Foundation, and Northwest Illinois Community Development Corporation. He also has served as President of the Dakota Community School Board, and as Trustee of St. Paul Church and Rock City Fire Protection District.

He is a graduate of Dakota High School, earned his Associate of Science in Agriculture from Highland Community College and his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education from Illinois State University. He taught in the classroom until 1979 when he entered the banking industry joining First National Bank in Freeport, Illinois, as an Agricultural Loan Officer, where he worked until he was hired

by Citizens State Bank in 1990 as the Senior Loan Officer. He was promoted to President and CEO of Citizens State Bank in 2000. Additionally, he graduated from The Graduate School of Banking, Illinois Agricultural Leadership Institute, and The National Agricultural Banking School.

“Fritz is the personification of Citizens State Bank,” said Chairman of the Board, Craig Knaack.

“His leadership, service, and vision have guided this bank’s growth and success. He and the Board have planned for this succession and

The bank’s Board of Directors has appointed Amy Baker, currently the Chief Financial Officer at Citizens State Bank, to succeed Kuhlmeier as President and CEO. Baker, an Orangeville native, joined Citizens State Bank as their Controller and the Treasurer for First Lena Corporation in 2002 after completing her Associate of Science from Highland Community College and her Bachelor of Science in Accounting at Illinois State University. Before coming to Citizens State Bank, Amy worked in public accounting with Chicago’s Altschuler, Melvoin and Glasser LLP and as Finance Manager for APCOA/Standard Parking, Inc. Baker is a graduate of The Midwest School for Community Bankers, University of Wisconsin – Madison’s Graduate School of Banking, and Highland Community College’s Leadership Institute. against U.S. EPA for ignoring key clean air deadline Attorney General Lisa Madigan and 13 other attorneys general today file a notice of intent to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for failing to meet the Clean Air Act’s statutory deadline for designating areas of the country impacted by unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone, known as smog.

In August, Madigan and a coali-

tion of attorneys general sued the EPA for illegally delaying the designations, and the following day, the EPA reversed course and withdrew the notice extending the deadline.

However, this week, the EPA missed the statutory deadline of Oct. 1 for smog designation.

Reducing smog levels is vital to protecting Americans from dangerous pollution. According to the

Congress is complicit in gun violence if we don’t act Fellow Illinoisan, The worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history occurred last Sunday night in Las Vegas, Nevada. The carnage was horrific - 58 lives were lost and over 500 people were wounded. Firing hundreds of bullets from a room on the 32nd floor of a hotel, the shooter turned a country music festival into a war zone. There are hundreds of families and communities who have been devastated by this horrendous crime. My thoughts are with those families and will be for a long time.

I want to thank law enforcement and first responders who ran towards gunfire to save lives.

It is unthinkable that this kind of tragedy could take place in the United States of America — but it’s now becoming a regular occurrence. The American Medical Association has declared that gun violence in America is a public health crisis. On an average day, 300 Americans are shot and about a third of them will die from those gunshots. We can’t let this become the new normal. We can’t sit back and shrug our shoul-

ders as 30,000 Americans are shot and killed year after year.

After a mass shooting, we go through a cycle of grief, outrage and then silence. We must break that cycle and do something to prevent the next massacre and reduce the daily toll of shootings in our neighborhoods. As lawmakers, we are supposed to pass laws to make America safer. Families have been devastated because of gun deaths on the streets of Chicago, at a concert in Las Vegas, at a movie theater in Aurora, at a night club in Orlando, at an elementary school in Newtown, and in countless more communities across America. No single law or policy would prevent every shooting death, but we have to start working together on common sense steps that will address this public health crisis and save lives.

We have the power to prevent shootings and spare families the unimaginable pain that so many in Las Vegas are feeling today — let’s act on it. Sincerely, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin.

American Lung Association, over 115 million Americans breathe harmful levels of smog, which often travels far distances from other states with less stringent clean air regulations. Designating areas with unhealthy smog levels plays a key role under the Clean Air Act in addressing the pollutant’s severe harms to public health and triggering requirements for state-specific plans and deadlines to reduce pollution in the designated areas.

“The U.S. EPA’s inaction is unacceptable when it is well known that smog leads to severe health problems particularly for children and older people,” Madigan said. “If U.S. EPA continues to abdicate its role to protect our environment and health, I will ask a court to require U.S. EPA to fulfill its duty under the Clean Air Act to ensure that people across the country are protected from dangerous pollution.”

The notice of intent to sue was filed by Madigan and the attorneys general of California, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota (through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency), New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia.

In October 2015, the EPA strengthened the national air quality standards for smog. The Clean Air Act requires that the EPA, within two years after issuance of new or revised standards, designate areas of the county that are in “attainment” or “non-attainment” with these public health and welfare standards. In

the case of the 2015 smog standards, EPA was required to issue attainment or non-attainment designations by Oct. 1.

However, on June 28, 2017, EPA Administrator Pruitt published a notice extending the deadline for the smog designations for all areas in the country for one year. On Aug. 1, Madigan and a coalition of 16 attorneys general sued the EPA for illegally delaying the designations.

The next day, EPA abruptly reversed course and announced it was withdrawing the designations delay, although it remained equivocal on whether it would meet the Oct. 1 deadline.

As of this week, EPA has failed to make the required designation of areas of the country impacted by unhealthy levels of smog, missing the Oct. 1 deadline and violating the Clean Air Act. Today’s notice of the coalition’s intent to sue over EPA’s illegal inaction fulfills the Act’s requirement that parties provide a 60day notice prior to filing a lawsuit.

The designation of areas for national air quality standards is a key statutory obligation under the Clean Air Act and for protecting the public’s health. For areas designated as in non-attainment with the standards, states must adopt “implementation plans” – a collection of actions that the state will undertake to reduce pollution in order to ensure the standards will be met in those areas. The deadlines for submitting implementation plans – and for ensuring that air quality standards are met within designated areas – are

both tied to the date of EPA designations.

According to EPA, the 2015 updated smog standards will improve public health protection, particularly for at-risk groups, including children, older adults, people with lung diseases such as asthma, and people who are active outdoors, especially outdoor workers. In fact, the EPA estimated that meeting the new smog standards would result in net annual public health benefits of up to $4.5 billion starting in 2025 (not including California, where a number of areas have longer to meet the standards), while also preventing approximately: 316 to 660 premature deaths; 230,000 asthma attacks in children; 160,000 missed school days; 28,000 missed work days; 630 asthma-related emergency room visits; and 340 cases of acute bronchitis in children.

Smog forms when nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and carbon monoxide emitted from power plants, motor vehicles, factories, refineries, and other sources react under suitable conditions.

Because these reactions occur in the atmosphere, smog can form far from where its precursor gases are emitted and, once formed, smog can travel far distances, which is why, despite enacting stringent in-state controls on sources of these pollutants, many states are not able to meet federal health-based air quality standards for smog on their own.

“This budget lays the groundwork for deep cuts to programs our seniors depend on such as Medicaid, Social Security - it even raises the Medicare eligibility age. At a time when so many across the heartland are struggling, their budget even raises taxes on working families. It’s deeply disappointing to see such a partisan agenda moving forward when we should be working on bipartisan solutions to put hardworking families first again.”

The Republican budget calls for: · A $1.1 trillion dollar cut to Medicaid over ten years. · $487 billion in Medicare cuts

over ten years. · An increase in Medicare eligibility age to 67. · Replacing Medicare’s guaranteed benefits for future retirees with vouchers toward the purchase of a private health plan or traditional Medicare. · A cut in Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, which it

describes as “a first step” to Social Security reform. · $50 billion in mandatory cuts to veterans’ benefits over the next ten years. · An average of $230,000 in annual tax cuts to millionaires. · Less than 10 percent of its benefits will go to households earning less than $100,000.

BETTYE LEONA EVANS Bettye Leona Evans, 97 years old, beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother went to be with her maker on Oct. 2, 2017 at Stratford Pines Nursing Home in Midland, Michigan.

Bettye was born in Fairfield, Iowa on Oct. 2, 1920.

She was married to Robert Clark Evans on June 6, 1942 at the Methodist Church in St. Augustine, Florida. Bettye was a wonderful and caring school teacher, teaching grade school in several locations including overseas in Morocco and Spain. She retired in 1975 after teaching fifth grade for 16 years at the grade school in Herscher, Illinois.

Bettye enjoyed painting and created 20 oil paintings during her lifetime. She also enjoyed writing poetry and collecting shells.

Bettye was predeceased by her husband Robert C. Evans, her sister Lois Vanderheyden, her brother-inlaw Malcolm Vanderheyden, her father Leslie Leo Schmidt, and her mother Martha (Schuler) Schmidt.

Surviving family are her son and daughter-in-law Donald C. and Billie Jo Evans of Metropolis, Illinois, her son and daughter-in-law Richard A. and Karen E. Evans of Midland, Michigan, and her daughter Linda Caraher of North Granby, Connecticut as well as her five grandchildren and their spouses Shannon and Paul Wendricks, Meredith and Corey Grady, Thomas and Emma Caraher, Matthew Evans, and Anne and Jared Love and her five great grandchildren Gavin Wendricks, Brooklyn Wendricks, Carter Grady, Lillian Grady, and William Caraher.

Bettye will be laid to rest with her husband Robert in Ladies Union Cemetery in Stockton, Illinois. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Hermann Funeral Home Directors in Stockton, Illinois.

Services were held at the Hermann Funeral Home on Saturday, Oct. 7.

She fought a courageous and valiant battle of cancer and surgeries. Per her wishes there will be no visitation or service. Cremation rites have been accorded by McDonald Funeral Home in Fulton. She was born on May 12, 1940 to Elwyn and Marian (Krise) Brubaker of rural Stockton, Ill. She graduated from Stockton High School with the class of 1958.

On Aug. 15, 1958 she was united in marriage to Harold Joepfer, Jr. To that union two children were born, Jim and Laurie. She later divorced and married Jim Green of Fulton on May 10, 1985. She worked for the school in Clinton, Iowa, Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton and later 20 years at PFC in Comanche, Iowa. She enjoyed the cruise with her husband Jim, phone calls and visits with Jim and Laurie, having lunch with her friend Sara, phone calls from her brothers Ed and Roy, shopping, country music, family get togethers, having lunch with some classmates, her class reunion, birthday parties for grandchildren, a vacation to her brothers with her sister Kathy and husband Lonnie, birthday parties for great nieces and nephews and going to Dusty’s to see Terry Ann and friends. She is survived by her husband Jim, two children Jim of Moline and Laurie of Davenport, Iowa, 3 step children Tom (Liz) of Prophetstown, Ill., Jimmy (Jes) of Maquoketa, Iowa and Charles (Amy) of Grand Mound, Iowa, one grandson, two great grandchildren, six step grandchildren, sister Kathy (Lonnie) of Albany, Ill, brothers Ed of Christiana, Ten., Ray (Lori) of Yuma Az. Mother in law Ann of Morrison, Ill, brothers in law Gary (Cheryl) of Fulton, Dean of Morrison as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews , cousins and friends.

MARGARET J. HEINKEL Margaret J. Heinkel, age 94 of Lena passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017 at the Lena Living Center.

She was born on March 5, 1923 to Carl and Fannie (Wagner) Bitz in Winslow Township. She graduated from Winslow High School in 1940, attended an extra year of High School in Lena because she was too young to start nursing school. Margaret graduated from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Freeport in 1944. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in May 1945 as a 2nd Lieutenant and was discharged in Aug. 1946. She married Harold Heinkel on Dec. 1, 1946 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lena. Margaret worked part time at St. Claire Hospital in Monroe and farmed with Harold in the Winslow area. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lena.

She was a past member of the Stephenson County Homemaker’s Extension, volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program in Lena, the Friendship Center in Lena and the Volunteer Hospice of Northwest Illinois in Stockton. Margaret loved to crochet and play cards.

Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 6, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial took place in Savanna Township Cemetery. Jimmy was born Nov. 2, 1933, in Savanna, Illinois, the son of James and Helen (Plattenberger) Thulen.

He attended Savanna Schools and graduated high school with the Class of 1951. Jimmy joined the United States Army in 1953 and later joined the Army Reserve before being honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal. On Aug. 18, 1963 Jimmy married Dorothy Smith. They celebrated 37 years of marriage before Dorothy’s death in 2001.

Jimmy started his law enforcement career as security officer at the Savanna Army Depot. He later became a police officer in Savanna and Lanark. Jimmy was promoted to the Lanark Chief of Police. In 1970,

Jimmy ran for Carroll County Sheriff and won, serving as the Sheriff from 1970-1986. Jimmy also operated Thulen’ s Pub in Savanna for a couple years, until retiring.

After retirement, Jimmy continued working as a Janitor at the Savanna Army Depot for many years. He was a member of the Savanna VFW Post # 2223 and the Mt. Carroll American Legion.

Jimmy enjoyed cutting wood, hunting, reading and playing cards, especially Euchre. He enjoyed helping those in need and would often drive his fellow veterans to appointments in Iowa City. Most of all, Jimmy loved getting together and spending time with his family and friends.

Jimmy will be dearly missed by his children. Joseph Thulen of Savanna, Jason (Vicky) Thulen of Savanna, Patricia (Kevin) Krug of Elizabeth, Illinois, and Jonathon (Jeannie) Thulen of Morrison, Illinois; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack (Jennifer)Thulen of Thomson, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; three sisters, Delores Goss, Betty Thulen, and Harriet Berthoff; and a step-son.

Lena Historical Society to host Historic US Route 20 presentation Bryan Farr, founder and president of The Historic US Route Association will present “Historic US Route 20: America’s Longest Highway” on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at The Lena Historical Society located at 427 Grove Street, Lena.

In 2010, Farr took an adventure on Route 20, following the Black and white US 20 shields from Boston to Newport, Oregon – a total of 3365 miles. Upon his return, a book was written detailing his adventures with amazing photographs and a brief story to go along with the pic-

tures.

Farr started the nonprofit organization in 2012 to promote travel and tourism on the original 1926 alignment of Route 2 – the year it was designated.

Mr. Farr’s presentation will offer the history of Route 20 which started as a series of Native American Trails in New England and eventually followed the railroad west. He will include personal stories of people he met on his trip.

The program will take place at 7 p.m. and is free to the public.

and Lillian (Groezinger) Krug. He attended Elizabeth High School and graduated with the Class of 1942. On Feb. 21, 1958, Marvin married Carol Mueller at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Galena, Illinois. They celebrated 53 years of marriage before Carol’s death in November 2011.

Marvin farmed around the Elizabeth area his whole life. After he sold his last head of cattle in 1988, Marvin rented out the farm. Marvin continued to work at various places including Chestnut Mountain, and Krug Lawn Maintenance. This allowed Marvin and Carol to spend time together and travel across the country. He was a former member of the Elizabeth Fire Department and was a longtime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where he

served on the church council. Marvin enjoyed fishing, antique farm machinery, and listening to Big Band music. Most of all, he cherished the time spent with his family and friends.

Marvin will be dearly missed by his three children, Janice (Ronny) Appleby of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, Brian Krug of Freeport, Illinois, and Kevin (Patricia) Krug of Elizabeth; six grandchildren, Timothy, Megan (Fiancé Spencer Schwartz), and Stephanie Appleby; and Adam (Fiancé Bridget Johnson), Jacob, and Jared Krug; and two great-grandsons, Parker and Brennan Appleby.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Lillian Krug; his wife, Carol; and granddaughter, Michele Appleby.

The Freeport Post Office will host a Passport Day event on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. – Noon. “This is a great opportunity for Freeport residents planning to travel outside the United States to apply for a passport without making a reservation,” said Freeport Postmaster Deborah Graves.

In addition to the familiar passport book, travelers can also apply for a passport card, which may be used for land and sea travel only between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean region.

The wallet-size passport card is a less expensive alternative for those who travel to these destinations, but it is not available for international travel by air.

To apply for a passport book or passport card for the first time, applicants need proof of U.S. citizenship in the form of their birth certificate issued by the city, county or state, or a certificate of citizenship or a naturalization certificate. Applicants will also need a valid form of photo identification, and they must submit a photocopy of that identification, such as a current valid driver’s license, government ID or military photo ID. There will be passport photo service available at the Freeport Post Office.

For first time applicants, the fee for a passport book is $110.00 to the Department of State with an acceptance fee of $25 to the Postal Service. The fee for an adult passport card is $30.00. An expedited process is also available for an additional fee. Passport applications for both the book and the card require a 2 x 2 photograph in color, which can be taken at the Passport Day event for a $15. The fee for minors under the age of 16 is $80 for a Passport Book and $15 for a Passport Card. Parents applying for Passport Books/Cards for children under the age of 16 must both be present along with the child.

Foresight Financial announces new Board Chairman The board of directors of Foresight Financial Group, Inc., has announced the retirement of Board Chairman John L. Jeschke, effective as of his 71st birthday on Sept. 30. The Foresight board has also announced that current board member Robert W. Stenstrom will be stepping up as Chairman.

The staff read a variety of articles from an array of educational publications and used that information to work in small groups and in a whole group setting to define 21st Century Learning and how these concepts can improve instruction at Scales Mound School. Need an interesting chicken recipe?

This one is really good. It reminds me of the apricot glazed chicken that I have made from time to time. I really like chicken thighs, so this recipe is great for those of us who like dark meat. I think you could use legs if you want to.

Sticky Cider Glazed Chicken 2 T. unsalted butter 8 boneless skinless chicken highs 1 t. salt ½ t. black pepper ½ C. apple cider 2 T. molasses Preheat the oven to 375. in a large ovenproof skillet, melt butter over medium high heat. Sprinkle chicken all over with salt and pepper. Add the chicken to the skillet and cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Remove chicken from skillet.

Whisk the cider and molasses into the skillet and cook, whisking frequently, until thickened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Return the chicken to the skilled.

Bake until meat thermometer inserted in thickest portion of the chicken registers 165, about 25 minutes.

I love to use the slow cooker, so when I saw this apple recipe, I thought it was a good one for me. I love the brown sugar and pecan combination.

You can toast the pecans in a pan on the top of the stove. Toast them until you smell their fragrance; it doesn’t take a lot of time. You can use Braebrun, Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp apples.

Slow Cooker Baked Apples ½ C. butter, softened 1 C. firmly packed light brown sugar 1 C. chopped toasted pecans ½ C. golden raisins ½ C. dried cranberries 1 t. apple pie spice 1 t. orange zest 1 ½ t ground ginger 6 medium firm apples 1 large orange, juiced Spray a 5 to 6 quart slow cooker with cooking spray. In a small bowl, beat butter and brown sugar with a mixer at medium speed until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes, stopping to scrape bowl.

Stir in pecans, raisins, cranberries, pie spice, zest, and ginger. Cut ½ inch off the top of the apples. Using a melon

baller or spoon, scoop out core and seeds of apples, making sure not to puncture the bottom. Brush the inside of the apples with orange juice.

Fill apples with butter mixture and place in cooker. In a liquid measuring cup add remaining orange juice and water to measure ½ cup; pour into the cooker around the apples. Cover and cook on LOW until tender, 1 to 1½ hours. Using a slotted spoon, transfer apples to serving platter and keep warm. Pour liquid in cooker into a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until liquid is syrupy and reduced by half. Drizzle onto the apples; serve with ice cream.

This dessert is a great one because you make it in a pie plate and flip it over. Lots of time apple cakes are made in a large pan, and it is difficult to get it eaten before it spoils. This recipe’s size is just right!

Apple-Pumpkin Upside-Down Cake 2 large eggs 2 T. plus ¼ C. softened butter, divided 2 T. plus ¾ C. sugar, divided 1 t. cinnamon, divided 2 medium apples, peeled and thinly sliced ½ C. canned pumpkin 1¼ C. flour 1 t. baking soda ½ t. salt ½ C. buttermilk Preheat the oven to 350. Let eggs stand at room temperature 30 minutes.

In a microwave, melt 2 tablespoon butter. Stir in 2 tablespoons sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon; spread mixture

into a 9-inch pie plate. Arrange apple slices in a single layer over the butter mixture.

Cream remaining butter and remaining sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in pumpkin. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt and remaining cinnamon; add to creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beating well after each addition.

Spread the batter evenly over the apples. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 30-35 minutes. Loosen sides of cake from pie plate with a knife. Cool 10 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

High school football season is winding down, and we are looking at the playoffs. The end of the football season means Halloween and Thanksgiving are not far away. It also means that fresh fruits and vegetables are coming to the ends of their seasons. Barb Wire called and reminded me that this is the last week for the Farmer’s Market.

The time is shortened from 4 to 7. It is getting dark earlier, and it cools down.

Stop by and get your last supplies of fresh vegetables and fruits while you can. As we coast into fall, we continue to look for recipes that feature black or red raspberries, onions, corn, zucchini, apples and tomatoes.

Saturday was a gray day; I don’t think we got much rain, but it tried all day. The temperature remains warm, and the leaves are tumbling down. I think we might be done mowing and have to go to leaf raking. This week we continue to use lots of fruits and vegetables that are in season. There is an interesting assortment of new flavors.

The first recipe uses cucumbers, tomatoes and onions in a vinegar and oil dressing. The combination of the tomatoes with the cukes and onions makes for a modern take on plain sweet and sour cucumbers. The great thing about this salad is that it keeps in the refrigerator for several days. You can also substitute grape tomatoes for the cherry tomatoes.

Cucumber, Tomato, and Onion Salad 1 C. white wine vinegar ½ C. sugar ¼ C. oil 4 t. salt 2 t. pepper 6 salad cucumbers, scored and sliced ¼-inch thick 6 medium tomatoes, quartered 2 C. assorted cherry tomatoes, halved 2 small red onions, sliced ¼ inch thick ¼ C. fresh dill In a large bowl, whisk together vinegar, sugar, oil, salt, and pepper until dissolved. Stir in cucumbers and all remaining ingredients until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hour before serving or up to 3 days.

This vegetable dish uses sage as the basic spice for this veggie side. Serve this dish with the chicken dish, and you are good to go with an easy meal.

Garlic Sage Roasted Broccoli and Carrots 1 head of broccoli, cut into small florets 2 C. roughly chopped peeled carrots (about 4 large) 1 T. chopped fresh sage or ½ t. dried sage 1 T. extra-virgin olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ t. salt ¼ t. black pepper Preheat the oven to 375. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil. Spray with cooking spray. Toss together the ingredients in the pan; arrange in a single layer. Bake until tender, about 20 minutes.

I have had a request for a beet recipe. I found this one in one of my cooking magazines. My experience with beets has been either pickled or Harvard style. This recipe uses ginger

as its spice; it takes very little time to prepare.

Ginger Beets 2 C. cooked beets cut into wedges, reserving 1 tablespoon of liquid 1 T. cider vinegar 2 t. grated ginger ½ t. honey 2 t. oil Salt and pepper to season Cook the beets until tender, reserving 1 tablespoon of the beet liquid.

Whisk the beet liquid with vinegar, ginger, honey, and oil. Toss with beets and season with salt and pepper.

This easy Italian recipe mixes bacon and tomato with a cheese sauce for an easy main course. I suppose you could substitute spaghetti or fettuccine for the pasta. I have said it before that I use A.J.’s Lena Maid Meats bacon; it is not full of fat and it is easy to cut into the ½ inch pieces. The biggest challenge is to remember to reserve the pasta water for later in the recipe.

Bacon-Tomato Linguine 12 oz. linguine 6 slices bacon, cut into ½-inch pieces 3 C. grape tomatoes 1 green onion, thinly slice 2 large eggs ½ C. grated parmesan cheese, plus more for topping 1 t. finely grated lemon zest Salt and pepper 1 C. fresh basil, torn Bring large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook as the label directs. Reserve 1¼ cups cooking water, then drain the pasta and set aside.

Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until crisp, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and onion and cook until the tomatoes are starting to burst, about 5 minutes. Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the drippings from the skillet.

Whisk the eggs, cheese, lemon zest and 1 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl. Slowly whisk in 1 cup of the reserved cooking water and set aside.

Reduce the heat under the skillet to medium low. Add the pasta and toss well. Slowly pour in the egg mixture, tossing to make a creamy sauce, about 1 minute. Season with salt and add the remaining ¼ cup cooking water as needed to loosen. Stir in the basil.

U of I Extension and Midwest Medical Center to offer ‘I on Diabetes’ program The University of Illinois Extension and Midwest Medical Center are teaming up to offer a four-part program called, I on Diabetes, in Jo Daviess County. I on Diabetes program is a four part series, consisting of 3-hour sessions, designed for anyone interested in preventing or managing diabetes.

There are 3 main types of diabetes: Type 1 which results when the body loses its ability to produce insulin.

Type 2 is a result of a combination of resistances to the action of insulin and insufficient insulin production. Gestational diabetes is a common complication of pregnancy and is also a risk factor for subsequent

development of Type 2 diabetes after pregnancy. In the 2016 Midwest Medical Center Community Health Needs Assessment it was found that approximately 12% of Jo Daviess County adults had a form of diabetes.

This dynamic program provides information on understanding the fundamentals of diabetes, establishing healthy goals, and the importance of self-management. Participants gain an understanding of how meal planning plays a vital role in the management of diabetes and increased knowledge of how key nutrients such as carbohydrates, fat, sodium and cholesterol affects their diabetes management. In addition to

Poor diet, lack of exercise & movement, smoking, and negative emotional stress make up a few of the major contributors to accelerated aging. Another significant factor that increases cellular aging comes from poor spinal and postural health. An intimate connection exists between spinal health and the function of the central nervous system. Normal posture and spinal health allow proper brain to body communication. Vehicle crash with injuries

On 10/01 at approximately 12:10 p.m., the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a two vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of S Elizabeth-Scales Mound Rd and S Ebys Mill Rd in rural Elizabeth. Upon arrival, deputies learned that a vehicle driven by Garrison Trueblood of Elizabeth, IL, rear ended a vehicle that was operated by Margaret Thill of Dubuque, IA. Thill was transported from the scene by Elizabeth Ambulance and transported to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, IA. This accident remains under investigation.

The governor’s Built in Illinois tour began with a stop at Hoffer Plastics in Elgin. The retail packaging company was founded in 1953 and was the winner of the 2015 Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Award.

Non-conference foe has no chance against Panthers

Lena-Winslow powered its way to its seventh win of the season and one step away from a probable first round home game in the Class 1A State Football Playoffs. The Panthers went out of conference and knocked hunted down Mooseheart with a 54-7 decision. Lena-Winslow is already the top ranked team in the Class 1A realm. They helped secure that with the weekend victory.

Mooseheart wasn’t prepared for the type of team Lena-Winslow is.

They couldn’t match up at the line and the time of possession was usually only stopped after a scoring drive ended with six or more points by the Panthers. They had already secured their playoff position. They won their week six game and that gave them their automatic bid.

A lot of changes took place in the NUIC this season. A new co-op really helped influence how schedules appeared for some former State Champions who reside in the Northwest. Lena-Winslow is one of them.

They will be in Durand this Friday night for their inaugural battle with the Rivermen.

Lena-Winslow’s 54 points scored against Mooseheart was only slight-

ly above their season average. They had been winning games by a better than 46-9 advantage all season long.

Now the scoring advantage juts up for the State of Illinois’ top-ranked team. The Panthers have won their games by a combined score of 33760 and it does not appear there will be any slowing down this week.

Durand hosts the co-op’s final regular season game of the year.

They also look at holding their own Homecoming celebration. They have

not scored much this season. Entering their week six game the Rivermen had put up 45 points all season.

The defense had allowed over 300.

Their inaugural coop schedule featured games against defending State Champion Forreston. State-ranked Dakota. State-ranked Eastland-Pearl City and a very talented and dangerous, probable 2A program, West Carroll. Now they get Lena-Winslow in the week eight game.

A win by the Panthers is expected

and the match could provide an opportunity to strengthen weak points in the Lena-Winslow machine, albeit as slight as they might appear now.

The 8-0 mark would also guarantee the Panthers would do no worse than share the NUIC-Northwest Title this season. Forreston and Dakota are one game back in the loss column.

Lena-Winslow already rolled over the Forreston Cardinals. They

knocked back the defending State Champs 28-14 in week two. Dakota is Lena-Winslow’s final opponent and they are the last team alive that can handle the Panthers. They are 6-1 and they have won four straight, including three where the Indians scored in excess of 40 points.

If Dakota falls this week against EPC they will not have a shot at the Northwest Title. If Dakota loses next week. They will again, fail to be champion.

Broncos kick Kirkland aside and move towards post-season

The significance of the week seven win over the Hiawatha Hawks can not be understated for the Orangeville Broncos. With two games to go, the 55-18 win assures Orangev ille has won the uphill battle to maintain an above .500 record down the stretch..

Teams have to be playing their best ball by the time the late games come and the Broncos are there. They control their own fate now.

The 4-3 record puts the Broncos in

good company and the playoff points they have earned helps them almost lead the pack. There aren’t a lot of teams that get into the playoffs in the Class 1A World. 32 is the total.

Qualifers are selected from schools covering an area from East Dubuque to Cairo.

With six wins all teams, given their academic eligibility, are invited to play post-season football. It’s a guarantee. Teams such as Lena-Winslow, Forreston and Freeport Aquin are already looking at the Class 1A State

Tournament. That drops the invitee list down to 29. Throw in Stockton, Dakota, Milledgeville and possibly even Polo. You’re down to 25 before teams such as Ottawa Marquette and Toulon-Stark County accept their invitations.

Kirkland hosted Orangeville on Saturday, Oct. 7. They even jumped ahead to help charge up the home crowd and looked to be about ready to play one of their best games of the season. The Broncos kicked that thought aside as Austin Guy began riding a wave of blockers for strike after strike. Orangeville answered

with 14 points and entered the second with a 14-6 edge.

The charge was on in the second as the Broncos discovered they had things well under control. Not a lot of people found ways to run free against the third stingiest defense in the Upstate Conference. Only Stockton and Polo had given up fewer points this season. Orangeville added three more scores and Guy kept building his historic portfolio. Orangeville was in front 35-6 at the turn.

Sports Hall of Fame

The 2017 Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame induction will be held on Saturday, October 14th at Savanna, IL. This years’ inductee from Lena-Winslow is Joe Daughenbaugh.

Joe is a graduate of Lena-Winslow High School with the class of 1990. Joe, who excelled in basketball, attended UW-Platteville from 1991-94 where he was recruited by Bo Ryan to play basketball. He was a member of Bo Ryan’s first Division III National Championship team.

As a result of his love for the game of basketball, Joe has held many basketball coaching positions at Lena-Winslow. He is currently Assistant Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach at Le-Win. Joe is owner and operator of Doc’s Excavating Inc. in Lena, a business he started in 2003.

Joe and his wife, Tammy, have two children and are residents of McConnell, IL.

visitors to insert objects of their own creation to see how they float, fly or spin; and a new Rocket Launcher exhibit will be purchased.

Temporary Exhibition Great Balls of Fire! Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors was developed by the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning. Visitors to this exhibit will gain a better

understanding of comets and asteroids and their relationship to the solar system and the danger they pose. The exhibit will be showcased in Woodward Exhibit Hall for three months this fall and three months fall of 2018. In addition to premier sponsor Woodward, the exhibition is also funded by a $10,000 donation by the Kiwanis Club of Rockford and support by Forest City Gear.

Celebrate the end of an era at Bridge Fest Savanna, Ill., and Sabula, Iowa, celebrate the end of an era on Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with Bridge Fest—The Last Drive, featuring food, music, art and a continuous drive across the historic Savanna-Sabula Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River connecting Illinois and Iowa via U.S. Highway 52.

Opened in December 1932, this charming but narrow bridge opened Savanna to tourism, completing a new “short route” from Chicago to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This iconic Mississippi River bridge is slated for demolition and Bridge Fest is the ceremonial last drive before the opening of its nearly completed replacement, the Dale Gardner Veterans Memorial Bridge. The opening of the new bridge is not yet scheduled.

Henry Matthiessen III, co-owner of Stoned Kaos Art Gallery and an event organizer, says that Bridge Fest is a way to say goodbye to an old friend. “This will be an epic celebration of something that’s connected Savanna and Sabula to the rest of the world for 80 years. We’re going to party like the bridge is coming down,” he says.

Anyone with a connection to the river or bridge is invited to participate in this historic last drive. Cars, motorcycles and pickup trucks are invited, particularly historic, antique and other special vehicles. Due to safety concerns, bicycles and pedestrians will not be allowed on the bridge. Extra-wide vehicles are

strongly discouraged. The bridge will remain open to commercial traffic.

Live music is scheduled at several Savanna and Sabula locations, including Iron Horse Social Club, Hawg Dogs, A.O. Elliott and Bombfire Pizza. Stoned Kaos Art Gallery will host the family-friendly event, Art Unabridged, featuring art

Lillian Schierloh enrolls at University of Findlay

Lillian Schierloh, of Lena has enrolled at the University of Findlay for Fall, 2017. New students began their studies at UF on Aug. 21.

Schierloh is a graduate of Lena Winslow High School, and is pursuing a degree in forensic science.

The University of Findlay is one of the largest private colleges in Northwest Ohio. With a total enrollment of almost 4,000 students, the University of Findlay has nearly 80 programs including bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs.

Road construction on IL 26 north of Freeport

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that construction work on IL 26 at the north edge of Freeport is underway on the bridge carrying IL 26 over the CN Railroad just north of Business US 20.

Drivers should be alert for the lane closures that will be in place while the bridge repairs are completed. The structure improvements are scheduled to be finished by mid-November.

Discovery Center Museum announced today that the Charitable Trust of Woodward, Inc. is awarding the museum $152,400 to provide a two-year grant for an Interactive STEM Education Program and the Great Balls of Fire! Comets, Asteroids and Meteors exhibition for area students, teachers and the public. The goal of the grant is to instill in children an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Science) disciplines at an age where children may be encouraged to pursue educational and career pursuits in these fields.

The project will focus on third grade students in the Rockford Public School District (approximately 2,200 students) and the Harlem School District (approximately 1,100 students). Elements of the three-part project are described in

Dower 60th Anniversary

The 60th wedding Anniversary of John and Mieko Dower of Stockton was Oct. 5. John Dower and the former Mieko Tomori were married Oct. 5, 1957 in Okinawa Japan.

John is retired from Kraft Foods and Mieko retired from Honeywell. They are the parents of four children: Mary of Tempe, AZ, Jim (Debra) Dower, Brea CA, Jeff (Doreen), Middleton WI, and Tim (Ronda) Stockton IL. They have eleven grandchildren.

There will be a family celebration at a later date.

Single vehicle crash with injuries

On 9/29 at approximately 5:22 p.m., Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to South Derinda Road near South Tower Road for a single vehicle crash with injuries. Upon arrival it was discovered that Amber N. Bender was operating a motor vehicle southbound on South Derinda Road. Bender lost control of the vehicle on a curve and drove off the paved roadway to the right and into the ditch. Bender’s vehicle struck a utility pole and came to rest in some trees. Bender was transported to Midwest Medical Center by Elizabeth EMS to receive treatment for her injuries. Bender’s passenger, Dylan S. Sadler was treated on scene

by Elizabeth EMT’s. This crash remains under investigation.

Train Day grand opening at the Stockton Heritage Museum The Stockton Heritage Museum invites you to visit our new train display and join in our grand opening of the train display, the Rausch Family Annex and all the displays at the Museum on Oct. 14.

Our train crew of Dick Bergman, Bill Lucke, Ed Marcure and Woody Wilson have been working very hard over the past 18 months to set up a new display, train tracks, buildings and landscaping. While the total set is not completed, the train will take you from Woodbine east through downtown Stockton, to East Stockton, where there was a round house and cottages, and a hotel.

The train track of the Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad preceded Stockton, with the first train through in 1888 and was the reason Stockton was incorporated in 1890, at the high point of the rail line. In 1892 the line became the Chicago Great Western.

Although not much is left of rail beds and buildings, the depot, the bridge, and daily trains, the Chicago Great Western has left a great impression on Stockton. Livestock shipping, the location of the cheese plant, and manufacturing are a result of the proximity of the railroad.

zens, Ralph Hanson, called Stockton home as his father Peter, who was an immigrant from Sweden and one of many immigrants who helped construct the rail line, settled in Stockton.
