Le-Win/Orangeville Speech Team engages luck and skill to maintain winning ways Sometimes you’re good; sometimes you’re lucky; sometimes you’re both. Riding the strong wave of some junior and senior leadership, the Le-Win/Orangeville Speech Team continued its winning ways with a third place finish at the River Ridge Speech Tournament, held Saturday, Jan. 13. This followed a sixth place finish at the team’s own tournament, hosted at Lena-Winslow High School the week before. That’s the “good” part. “Luck” reared it lovely head by allowing the team to escape the stomach flu that was making the rounds throughout the school district. “I thought for sure that someone, maybe even me, was going to get sick,” said head coach Tom Fore, “But, it didn’t happen. Our next 100 Women Who Care-Stephenson County quarterly meeting is less than 1 month away. Bring a friend to further build upon this already wonderfully giving group you have created. Here is the information: Hosted by: Grand River Hall (101 S. Liberty Street, Floor 6, Freeport) -Cash bar -Appetizers donated by Northwestern Service Co. Thursday, Feb. 8. -Social Hour/new member registration (optional) 5:30-6:30 p.m. -Meeting 6:30-7:30 p.m. Donations from last quarter’s meeting went directly to the Boys and Girls Club of Freeport and Stephenson County and totaled $13,100. Thank you so much for your commitment to the community! Boys and Girls Club of Freeport and Stephenson County is a community-based organization that provides young people with a fun, safe and constructive after-school environment. Neighborhood-centered, BGC provides programming in specialized areas including character development, educational enhancement, career exploration, life skills, the arts and sports, recreation and leisure. The Club is open to all youth ages 6-18 and has a special focus on serving children and teens from challenging or disadvantaged circumstances. A yearly membership fee of $6 is required of all program participants; additional siblings pay $3. Membership fees are set low so that this does not become a barrier for participation as it allows access to game rooms, computer labs, the Teen Center and gymnasium during Club hours to participate in a variety of classes, programs, and special events. The funds received from the donations were used to purchase books, curriculum, and furniture and supplied for the reading and math intervention circles as well as the homework help center in the after-school tutoring program.

Are you an

to jinx this, but we have not had one student bow out of a tournament because of illness this year. The season isn’t over, so it can still happen, but to have no one report off is unprecedented. In fact, attendance for this year has been incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it.” If there is one peculiarity about competitive speech, or forensics as it’s sometimes called, is the number of no-shows. It happens so often, it even has a name: drops.

“The first thing a tournament director asks teams when they show up is, ‘Do you have any drops?,’ Fore said. “If the answer is no, you’d think the director just won the lottery, they’re so happy, because noshows, especially a lot of them, can mess up a tournament real bad real fast. The poor guy who runs the Rock Falls team had around ten out of fifteen kids not show up when they came to our tournament. It happens so frequently, that we have a system

built in to our operating procedures to handle it.” Concerning the results of the River Ridge contest, some patterns are starting to emerge and hopefully they will continue. Orangeville junior Justin Malone won his third consecutive first place prize in Radio Speaking and finished a very close second in Oratorical Declamation. Le-Win senior Asa Lake took home the top
