The Lena Area Special Event Runners (L.A.S.E.R.) is proud to announce they will again host their annual event, Winterfest, A Community Holiday, beginning Jan. 22, and culminating on Jan. 27.

On Tuesday, Jan. 22, A Winter Fiesta / Taco Tuesday will be held at The Rafters Restaurant. All day specials will feature tacos, margaritas and tequila.

The 2019 King and Queen Coronation will take place at the Rafters at approximately 7:30 p.m. The reigning King and Queen are Ken and Diane Fiedler. For more information, contact Jaime at The Rafters 815-369-5330.

Wednesday, Jan. 23, will feature Downtown Lena. Many downtown businesses will be open late and feature in-store specials. Come visit, shop local and have a fun time. All businesses are invited to participate.

On Thursday, Jan. 24, a Prince and Princess of Winterfest contest will be held at Coach’s Golf & Grill. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. with no fee required. Competition begins at approximately 6 p.m. Competition is open to Lena Area First through Fifth graders. Contestants are asked to dress in their winter best. This is designed to be fun and uplifting for all involved. The winners are asked to be available for community appearances such as the Lena Lions Fall Festival Parade. On Friday, Jan. 25, events include: the Scavenger Hunt, beginning at 7pm SHARP at the Lena Brewing Company. This event is a yearly highlight for many and winning this competition grants bragging rights for the whole year. We are hoping the champions are coming to de-

On Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m., a pie-baking contest will be held at the American Legion Home hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary.

A brand new event will be held this year beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Frosty Balls Beer Relay Race will commence at 101 Billiards, travel through the Iron Horse Tap and culminate at Mulligans. This .5K “race” is designed to be a relay race with teams consisting of three people (21 and over). Entry fee is $20 per team and prizes will be awarded. For More Details contact Marsha at Mulligans

On Sunday, Jan. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. a Soup Tasting will take place at the American Legion Home, hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Also, on Sunday, Jan. 27, the Fourth annual SnowCar at the Rafters International Speedway will commence from NOON-5 p.m. Local celebrities will be participating during the competition! Cars will be in tech at Noon and the Race will commence at approximately 1:15 p.m.

Some businesses will be sponsoring “Snowcars” along with their choice of a local driver. When one

last car is remaining in operating condition or the Master of Ceremonies declares a “winner”, the competition will end and the SnowCar Team will earn the Title of SnowCar Master.

There is no charge to witness this hilarious event. Please bring your own chairs. Last year, there were so many laughs; it was hard to take it all in.

Lena-Winslow/Orangeville Speech Team marches toward state competition The 2018-19 high school speech season is not over, but it’s getting there. Most of the local schools maintain a schedule of six regular season tournaments. The Le-Win/ Orangeville team typically competes eight times, not including the State Series, all in an effort to prepare for the post-season which is right around the proverbial corner.

The River Ridge tournament held Saturday, Jan. 12, marked the sixth contest on the eight-tournament schedule for the Le-Win/Orangeville squad. It’s at this point when things start to fall into place in

determining who will represent the team at the Regional Tournament, to be held at Freeport High School on Saturday, Feb. 2. Those names will be released following the last tournament of the season, to be held at Rockford Jefferson High School on Jan. 26. Until then, it will be business as usual for the 16-student team, one of the largest in the area.

Among the “business items” that must be attended to is resolving memorization issues.

“There are as many unwritten rules in speech as there are written,” said Le-Win/Orangeville as-

sistant coach Tom Fore. “For instance, it’s specifically stated in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) rule book that note cards may be used in a few of the original writing categories, all the way up through the State Tournament.

But, if a speaker actually uses them, he or she will probably be criticized by a judge for using them and may be even be knocked down a rank. It seems very paradoxical, but that’s one example of the ‘that’s just the way it is’ world speech kids live in.

So, priority number one to prepare for Regionals is memorization.”

Another technicality is time. For most of the speaking events, the time limit is eight minutes and thirty seconds. Even the smallest fraction of a second over this will automatically lower a contestant one rank in the State Series. So, making sure speakers are within the time limit during practices is crucial. And, there are the basics of expression and interpretation that must be refined.

“Competitive speech is much more technical than most people realize,” Fore said. “It’s a constant work in progress.”

The River Ridge tourney saw Orangeville senior Justin Malone pick up his fourth first place medal in Radio Speaking this season. Justin also

placed second in Oratorical Declamation, where a student gives his or her interpretation of a significant or well-know speech.

Scholarship applications available at U of I Extension office The University of Illinois Extension Office in Elizabeth announces the availability of several scholarships: Ralph & Katherine Norris Scholarship, Floyd & Alice Bale Scholarship, Dairy Herd Improvement Scholarship, Home & Community Education Scholarship and the Dalgarn Family Scholarship Ralph & Katherine Norris donated funds to provide scholarships for Jo Daviess County residents studying agriculture or related fields. Scholarships will be awarded to people pursuing a two or four year degree program as full-time students. Current high school students, college students, and others continuing their education can apply. Applicants must be accepted at a chosen school, college, or university. Past applicants must submit a new application each

year. Recipients cannot receive the scholarship for more than four years.

Floyd & Alice Bale established the funds to provide scholarships for Jo Daviess County residents studying agriculture or related fields. Scholarships are awarded for two or four year degree programs to full time students. Recipients cannot receive the scholarship for more than four years.

The Jo Daviess County Dairy Herd Improvement Association has established a scholarship to provide financial assistance to Jo Daviess County Residents studying agriculture or agricultural related fields. An annual scholarship will be given as funds permit.

The Jo Daviess County Association for Home & Community Education is offering three scholarships of

$250 each to Jo Daviess County high school graduates pursuing a degree.

Black Hawk Run Golf Course to close

Dear Valued Members, It is with sincere regret to inform you that Black Hawk Run Golf Course will not re-open in the 2019 Season. As a valued member, it is our upmost priority to inform you about this decision.

Our decision was based on the number of golf courses in the area and declining rate of individuals who play golf has dropped dramatically at our course. We have tried several different avenues to create new business and have not been able to attract new daily golfers nor new members.

The Powers Family has been involved with the golf course for the past 6 years; along with Drew & Kay Spidahl, Tom Willams, John Curtiss, Tony Jones, & Jim Sullivan. We had a very good working relationship with all partners and continually tried to keep the course in the community.

Our partners put a great deal of their own money into the course to keep it operational for the past 6 years. We would like to thank them for their efforts and support.

We would also like to thank all of our employees throughout the years.

These people were very good to work with and tried to keep the course and clubhouse in excellent condition. We appreciated their hard work and work dedication.

We would like to thank the village of Stockton, all of our current and past members, and all of our daily customers for their patronage. We have created several new friendships, a lot of community support, and many good memories.

This has not been an easy decision to make; this is a very beautiful course with a lot of history. A lot of hard work from many people throughout the 50+ years of business. A large part of the community with many special occasions and memories. But times change and business changes.

There are several very nice golf courses in the area that I am sure will take on new members. If we can help in any way, please let us know. If you have carts that are personally owned or any plaques or headstones on the course that belong to you or your family, we will be happy to collect them for you.

We are looking at a few different options for the property; if there is any interest feel free to contact John Warner: 815-291-0591 for more information. If we do not sell the property, we will have a complete liquidation auction in April 2019 & possibly some of the real estate will be offered at absolute auction; which will include golf course equipment, golf carts, kitchen/bar equipment, hand tools, shop equipment, & much more.

Again, we would like to thank you for being a part of this course throughout the years. We would like to wish you all the best in the new year and hope you are able to find a new course to call home.

Peggy is especially interested in human reactions and relationships to wildlife who have adapted to urban environments. Peggy has been teaching environmental education for over 20 years and is passionate in regards to teaching children about their environment and helping people understand wildlife as it relates to their lives.

Following the keynote address there will be several breakout sessions on topics that include: Construction and Maintenance of Rain Barrels, Composting in the Home Garden, Hypertufa Pots, The Backyard Orchard, Seed Saving and Seed Starting, and Holistic Approach to Healthy Soils. The Jo Daviess County Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists will have a table set up where you can ask them questions you may have and learn more about what the groups do or can do for you.

CAROL ANN (TIPPETT) FISCHER Carol Ann (Tippett) Fischer, age 83, lifelong resident of Elizabeth, Illinois passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019 at home with her loving family by her side. A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Elizabeth.

Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth. Visitation was prior to the Mass at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for FHN Hospice, Freeport, Illinois in Carol’s memory.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com Carol was born Sept. 19, 1935, the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy (Ertmer) Rife in Freeport, Illinois. She is a graduate of the Elizabeth High School. On Dec. 15, 1951, Carol married Nolan Tippett at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Elizabeth. Together they raised seven children and celebrated 44 years of marriage until Nolan’s death on March 10, 1996.

Carol later remarried to Donald Fischer on Nov. 17, 2001. Donald passed away on Aug. 30, 2014.

Carol was a homemaker who cherished taking care of her family. She also worked as a cook and teacher’s aide for River Ridge School in Elizabeth for 17 years until her retirement in 2000. Carol enjoyed cooking, golfing, snowmobiling in West Yellowstone, attending Mass and Church functions, her daily devotional, Rosary, and prayers with her sister, Connie. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family—especially her grandchildren. Carol was a strong woman and fought a five-year battle with cancer. Despite her health concerns, she would often say that she “couldn’t be more blessed.” She received much help on her journey from her life-long friend, Norma Jean Hanny.

Carol will be dearly missed by her seven children, Richard (Karen) Tippett of Elizabeth, Cindy (Herb) Wilson of Monroe, Wisconsin, Mike Tippett of Rockton, Illinois, Russ (Chris) Tippett of Lena, Illinois, Lori (Terry) Patterson of Elizabeth,

DAVID FULTON David Fulton, age 68, of Hanover, Illinois, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa after a brief illness. A funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Hanover United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover, with Full Military Rites. Visitation was held Monday, Jan. 21, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. Memorials may be given for the Hanover VFW Club. David was born Dec. 13, 1950, the son of Ralph and Doris (Bearsley) Fulton in Savanna, Illinois. He attended Hanover High School, graduating with the Class of 1969.

David proudly served his country from 1969-72 as a Boatswain’s Mate in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. On July 6, 1974, David married Susan Cousins in Scales Mound, Illinois. Together they celebrated 44 years of marriage and raised two children.

David worked as a firefighter for the Rock Island Arsenal after transferring from the Savanna Army Depot in 1996, until his retirement in 2012. During winter he would work at Chestnut Mountain Resort, and Ea-

NEVIN D. KRYDER Nevin D. Kryder, 82, of Lena passed away with his family by his side at Walnut Acres in Freeport IL on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019. He was born March 25, 1936 to Clarence and Martha (Dickson) Kryder in Cedarville, IL. He was a 1954 graduate of Dakota High School. He married Arlene Kuhlemeyer on Oct. 2, 1954. Nevin was a lifelong farmer in the rural Lena area raising dairy cattle and hogs. He was a member of Lena United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the Lena Masonic Lodge 174. Nevin was also a member of the Valley of Freeport, Scottish Rite, and Lena Legion. Nevin was an avid golfer and hunter, enjoyed square dancing with Arlene in their younger years. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed spending his winters in Arizona.

Nevin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Arlene of Lena, children; son, Randy (Tam) Kryder of Lena, their children; Karen (Nathan) Hensal, their children Andrew and Jacob;

This bill will help provide much needed relief to farmers across Illinois’ 17th District already hit by the President’s trade war by resuming the EPA’s approval process of year-round E-15 sales.

Re-opening the EPA will also allow the agency to recommence inspections of drinking water systems, waste management and chemical facilities – protecting the health and well-being of Illinois families.

“As if our family farmers weren’t already bearing the brunt of this Administration’s impulsive policies, the closure of the EPA is delaying the implementation of yearround sales of E-15 which would have provided much needed relief to corn growers across Illinois,” Congresswoman Bustos said. “For the sake of our agricultural economy, it is time to put this shutdown to an end, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate take up this bipartisan

Soup Bowl Cabbage Rolls

2 cloves garlic, minced 2 t. grated fresh ginger 1 T. toasted sesame oil Sprinkle steak with salt. In a large bowl, whisk together ¼ cup water and cornstarch until dissolved; whisk in soy sauce, oyster sauce, vinegar, and honey. Stir in steak until well coated; cover and let stand for 30 minutes.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil over medium-high heat; add broccoli and cook for 3 minutes. Remove broccoli using a slotted spoon, and transfer to ice water to stop cooking.

Repeat the procedure with red pepper. Drain vegetables well.

In a large nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add half of the steak, reserving marinade; cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and repeat with remaining tablespoon of oil and remaining steak.

Add garlic and ginger to skillet; cook stirring frequently for 1 minute.

Add broccoli, pepper and reserved marinade; cook, stirring frequently for 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in steak and cook until heated through, about 3 minutes. Drizzle with sesame oil and serve immediately.

These oatmeal cookies have you rolling them out in sugar and cutting them out in shapes. I have several oatmeal cookie recipes, but they don’t make cutouts. Enjoy this new recipe for oatmeal cookies.

Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies

1½ C. Crisco 2 C. sugar 4 eggs, room temperature 4 t. water 4 C. flour 2 t. baking soda 2 t. cinnamon ½ t. salt 4 C. quick-cooking oats 2 C. shopped raisins 2 C. chopped nuts Preheat the oven to 350. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in water. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt; add to creamed mixture, and mix well. Stir in oats, raisins, and nuts.

On a clean surface sprinkle with additional sugar, roll dough to ¼ inch thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutters in desired shapes. Place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets; bake until set, 12 to 15 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool.

Need a quick dessert? This easy two-fruited cobbler will solve the

problem easily. This recipe specifically calls for large eggs as did the oatmeal recipe. Most baking recipes do remind you to have the eggs at room temperature. Enjoy this cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream!

Apple Cranberry Cobbler

6 C. thinly sliced peeled Granny Smith apples 2 C. fresh or thawed frozen cranberries 2 C. plus 2 T. flour, divided 2 T. firmly packed brown sugar 1 T. lemon juice 1 t. apple pie spice 2 C. sugar 1 t. salt 2 eggs, room temperature ¾ C. unsalted butter, cubed Vanilla ice cream Preheat the oven to 375. Spray a 9 x 13 pan with baking spray with flour. In a large bowl, stir together apples, cranberries, 2 tablespoons flour, brown sugar, lemon juice, and pie spice until well coated. Spread into prepared pan. In a medium bowl, whisk together sugar, salt, and remaining 2 cups flour. Whisk in eggs. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.

Sprinkle onto fruit.

Bake until golden brown and bubbly, 45 to 55 minutes, loosely covering with foil to prevent excess browning, if necessary. Let cool for 30 minutes; serve warm with ice cream.

Senior Center initiates tax program sign up As a new year begins, the Senior Resource Center is focusing on one of its most popular programs: the AARP Tax-Aide Program. From February to April, trained volunteers will prepare 1040 federal and state tax returns for low-and middle-income taxpayers focusing on seniors in Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties. This free program serves about 1,000 people each year.

The 2019 tax season officially begins at the Senior Resource Center on Monday, Jan. 21, when we begin taking Tax-Aide appointments. Call 815-235-9777, ext. 221, to make an appointment. Because the Senior

Resource Center is closed that day, leave a message and we will return your call the following day in the order received. Or call on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Schedule your appointment for a time after you believe you will have all your documents; you can schedule before you have actually received all your documents.

Appointments in the Freeport office will be available from Friday, Feb. 1, to Friday, April 12. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays with half-days on Fridays.

Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City. “Design-build has proven in national studies to deliver the lowest cost, fastest schedule and highest quality.
