The Lena Community Park District faces challenges

Lena Community Park District is facing some tough hurdles in the coming years. With the raising of the minimum wage, our budget needs to absorb far more in wages than our annual levy increase will cover. There are several ways we are preparing to tackle this dilemma: charging more for our programs, cutting services and employees, and a few more plans that are still evolving. We wanted to let the public get a hold of this information so that when you see the summer program costs, you will not be so irritated with us for the cost increases. Also, the summer programs will not be mailed out as in the past.

The programs will be available online through our new website, or a few copies will be at the office. This

The Lena Area Special Event Runners (L.A.S.E.R.) is proud to announce they will again host their annual event, Winterfest, A Community Holiday, beginning Jan. 23 and culminating on Jan. 26, 2020. This event is sponsored by the Village Of Lena.

On Thursday, Jan. 23, a Prince and Princess of Winterfest contest will be held at Coach’s Golf & Grill. Registration starts at 5:30pm with no fee required. Competition begins at approximately 6:00pm. Competition is open to Lena Area First through Fifth graders. Contestants are asked to dress in their winter best. This is designed to be fun and uplifting for all involved. The winners are asked to be available for community appearances such as the Lena Lions Fall Festival Parade. All parents, grandparents, family and extended family are encouraged to attend. We would also ask you to recall that we have been cutting your taxes regularly starting in 2011 and finishing up with 2016 hitting our low, and have done our best to be fiscally careful with your money. That is one thing we want you to realize - we understand that it is YOUR MONEY! We are merely elected to represent your best interests. We are not serving to spend your money on our dreams or to build monuments to our

name! It is our desire to make every meeting count towards an economical step forward for the park district.

The park district has no bonds, no debt certificates, and no loans. Our bills are paid up to date and we have worked hard to make needed improvements. We have a healthy balance on hand, but with the new state wage laws, we are going to suffer.

We are one of the places that many young folks go to find summer jobs.

We would like to continue that tradition, but we have been working the numbers and it is not encouraging.

The board will strive to make the situation work as best we can. The park board receives no pay for their service, no compensation for driving to and from meetings; we serve to help our community.

Ethan Lartz is the park board president. After being president from 2011 to April 2018, I am now the secretary. I have one more year left in my second term. I will then have served for 12 years and think it is time to step down. So as we prepare for our 2020 season, I certainly hope it is a great one!

Knauf sisters propel fury to win The Rock County Fury Hockey team traveled to Mequon Jan. 14 to take on Lakeshore Lightning. The first period ended scoreless. Less than two minutes into the second period Alyssa Knauf grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone and passed to her sister Haley Knauf who skated in and shot the puck over the Lightning goalie’s shoulder. With five minutes left of the period Haley passed the puck from behind the net to Alyssa who lit the lamp.

On a power play Anika Einbeck skated the puck into Lightning’s zone. Alyssa, Anika, and defensemen Sam Wells and Sarah Edler made great passes until Alyssa found an opportunity and gave the Fury a 3-0

lead at the end of the second period.

The Fury kept up the quick pace in the third period. On a power play Haley and Anika made great passes to each other. Haley skated to the blue line and fired a rocket past the goalie. With 24 seconds remaining, the Fury’s top line again connected with Haley earning a hat trick (3 goals in one game) with assists from Alyssa and Anika, who earned a playmaker in the game. The Fury outshot the Lightning 39-18 in the 5-1 victory.

Up next is a conference game vs Viroqua Saturday, Jan. 18 at 4:30 in Beloit.

Glenn and Nancy (Crouse) Broge will be celebrating their 70th Wedding Anniversary on January 22, 2020.

They have three children Diane (George) Walz, Douglas (Jeri) Broge and Donna Mellen , eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. They will be having a family dinner celebration at a later date.

Children’s Dyslexia Center receives 100 Women Who Care donation Congratulations to the Children’s Dyslexia Center on receiving the donations from our November meeting!

They were recently presented checks and cash totaling $13,300.

The Dyslexia Center, located in Freeport, began operation in the Fall of 2004. The Center’s goals are to provide state of the art multi-sensory tutorial reading and written language instruction to children with dyslexia, free of charge. They also are a training facility for tutors using the Orton-Gillingham approach.

The Center currently has 18 students enrolled with eight certified tutors. They also have one off-site certified tutor and 1 off-site trainee, both at Tri-County Christian School. They began partnering with Tri-County Christian school, located in the Freeport, in 2018. They are excited to be able to implement their program in a school and hope to continue that expansion in the future.

On average, one student completing one year of tutoring at the Dyslexia Center costs $5,000. Donations from 100 Women Who Care-Ste-

PY20 LIHEAP, PIPP and Weatherization Assistance Programs Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency has funding from the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to assist residents of Jo Daviess and Stephenson Counties with home heating utility costs (gas, propane, electric) through the Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) and Weatherization Programs.

Effective January 1, 2020 LIHEAP clients may apply for the Direct Vendor (DVP) one time payment assistance only. No new PIPP applications will be taken after December 31, 2019.

Starting Dec. 2, 2019, all income eligible households may schedule an appointment to apply for assistance with their heating utilities. LIHEAP applications will be taken until May 31, 2020 or until funding is exhausted.

Eligible households may call 800-883-1111 or 815-232-3141 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to schedule an appointment to apply for assistance at one of the following locations.

PY 20 LIHEAP Emergency Furnace Program An Emergency Furnace Assistance Program is available for LIHEAP households of Stephenson and Jo Daviess Counties who are homeowners and whose existing heating systems are not functioning or have been red-tagged by their utility.

The purpose of the LIHEAP Furnace program is to restore heat to the household and is available from October 1, 2019 through March 31, 2020 or until funds have been exhausted.

Priority periods for the LIHEAP Emergency Furnace Program are the following: Starting Dec. 2, 2019 all income eligible households may apply for emergency furnace assistance.

To qualify for the LIHEAP Emergency Furnace Program, the household must first apply for and be approved for LIHEAP assistance.

The household must have active service with both primary and secondary heating utilities.

Households and disconnected utilities are not eligible for this assistance.

In addition to LIHEAP documents, the following homeownership documentation must be provided: 1. Copy of real estate tax bill

Party Cheese Ball

1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened 2 C. shredded cheddar cheese 1 jar (5 oz.) Old English cheese spread 1 jar (5 oz.) pimento cheese spread 3 T. finely chopped onion 1 T. lemon juice 1 t. Worcestershire sauce Dash of garlic powder ½ C. chopped pecans, toasted ½ C. minced fresh parsley In a large bowl, beat the first eight ingredients until blended. Cover and refrigerate until easy to handle, about 45 minutes. Shape into 2 balls; roll in parsley and pecans. Cover and refrigerate. Remove from refrigerator 15 minutes before serving with crackers If you are planning a Valentine celebration, this Jell-O salad is a great one to serve. The addition of cranberry sauce and pineapple to ordinary raspberry gelatin is delicious.

You can make it in a ring mold or serve it in a large glass bowl.

Cran-Raspberry Gelatin Salad

2 pkg. (3 oz. each) raspberry gelatin 1 C. boiling water 1 can (14 oz. whole berry cranberry sauce 1 can (8 oz.) crushed pineapple, undrained 1 C. orange juice

Sugared Cranberries

In a large bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Stir in cranberry sauce, pineapple and orange juice.

Pour into a 6 cup ring mold coated with cooking spray or a large glass bowl. Cover and refrigerate until set, about 4 hours. Unmold onto a serving plate. Garnish with sugared cranberries.

The not so skinny cook This easy chili recipe is great with the addition of macaroni. You can make it spicier by adding chopped jalapeño peppers and the extra hot chili beans. Serve it with a salad, and you have a great meal.

Chili Mac

1 lb. ground beef, cooked and drained 2 cans (16 oz.) chili beans, undrained 2 large green peppers, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 4 celery ribs, chopped 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce 2 T. chili powder 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 pkg. (7 oz.) elbow macaroni, cooked and drained Pepper Jack cheese for garnish.

In a 5-qt. slow cooker, combine the first 8 ingredients. Cover and cook on Low for 6 hours or until heated through. Stir in macaroni; season with salt and pepper. Serve in bowls and garnish with pepper jack cheese and/or sour cream.

This is another recipe for a cold night. The use of rotisserie chicken makes prep really easy. If you want specific vegetables, you can use plain peas, green beans, broccoli, and cauliflower from frozen bags. If you wanted to use the Pillsbury ready made buttermilk biscuits, you would also cut down in prep time. If you don’t have ramekins, use a baking dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray.

Grasshopper Cookies and Ccream Cheesecake

1 C. Oreo cookie crumbs 3 T. sugar 2 T. butter, melted Filling: 4 pkg. (8 oz. each) cream cheese, softened 1 C. sugar 1 C. white baking chips, melted and cooled 6 T. crème de menthe ¼ C. flour 2 T. crème de cacao ½ t. peppermint extract 4 eggs, lightly beaten 1 C. coarsely crushed Oreo cookies (about 10 cookies) Ganach ¾ C. semisweet chocolate chips 6 T. heavy whipping cream Preheat the oven to 325. Place a greased 9-inch springform pan on a double thickness of heavy duty foil (about 18 inches square). Wrap foil securely around pan. In a small bowl, mix cookie crumbs and sugar; stir in the butter. Press onto the bottom of prepared pan.

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in cooled chips, crème de menthe, flour, crème de cacao and extract.

Add eggs, and beat on low speed just until blended. Pour half the batter

1½ C. chopped rotisserie chicken 4 T. minced fresh chives, divided 1 pkg. (7.5 oz.) buttermilk biscuit mix Preheat the oven to 400. Place 4 ramekins (8 oz.) on a parchment paper-lined rimmed baking sheet. In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp, 10 to 12 minutes.

Remove bacon using a slotted spoon, and let drain on paper towels, reserving drippings in skillet.

Add vegetables, soup, dressing, and cream; cook, stirring frequently, until heated through, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in bacon, chicken, and 2 T. chives. Divide mixture among prepared ramekins.

Prepare biscuit mix according to package directions, adding remaining 2 T. chives. Drop over chicken mixture. Bake until topping is golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.

If you are having that special Valentine dinner, this cheesecake is a good one to serve. You can also save it for St. Patrick’s Day.

Obituary RICHARD ALLEN HEINKEL Richard Allen Heinkel, age 71 of Lena, IL went to his heavenly home on Jan. 13, 2020.

He was born on May 8, 1948 in Freeport, IL to Allen and Verena Heinkel.

He was a graduate of Lena-Winslow High School in 1966. He then went to the University of Illinois and graduated with a degree in Business Agriculture in 1970 and was a member of the Beta Sigma Psi fraternity. He farmed with his Dad for a couple years and then started his career in the Insurance industry. He became one of the first seven Certified Insurance Counselor’s (CIC) in the state of Illinois and was very proud of that. He worked at a few insurance companies in the area before becoming co-owner of Taylor Heinkel Enterprises in Lena. He did that until retirement. He loved talking with people in his office, even if they just stopped by for a visit.

Richard was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Lena.

He was very strong in his faith and loved his church, home, and all the friends made throughout the years.

He served on many committees and boards over the years and was also Church President.

Richard was involved in many clubs and associations throughout the years. He was a member of the Lena Lions Club, where he served many positions and also served as District Cabinet Secretary. He was a member of the Lena Business Association to help make Lena a great place to live. He served as the Village Trustee from 1991-1995 and then Village President from 1997-2005.

He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Fighting Illini – good or bad. In his younger years he played basketball, softball, bowling, football and volleyball. He passed along his love of basketball to both his children, especially his son. He missed very few of his college games, trav-

eling across Iowa even in blizzard conditions. He was also an avid collector of Planters Peanuts, Orange Crush and Crayola. He enjoyed photography and even won a local photography contest with the beautiful pictures he took. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with this family and friends going on adventures and playing cards.

He is survived by the love of his life Kathy Becke and they were happily married for 44 years. They raised two children: daughter Jennifer (Erik) Bennett of Sun Prairie, WI and son Lon (Candice) of Dubuque, IA. He adored and loved his three grandsons Alexander, Maxwell and Blake. He was so proud of everything they did and would start conversations with friends by telling stories about them. He is also survived by siblings VeAnn (Greg) Klipstein, Kay Heid (Stephen Hauser), Dale (Linda) and Lyle, Sister-in-law Barb Pinnow and Brother-in-law Daylon (Beth) Becke as well many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, parent in-laws Milford and Helen Becke, Uncle Elmer Wyss, Uncle and Aunt Harold and Margaret Heinkel and cousin Elizabeth Heinkel.

Celebration of life services were Tuesday, Jan. 21, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lena, IL. Visitation was prior to the service. Reverend Rick Bader performed the services.

A luncheon followed the service in the fellowship hall.

Cremation rites to be accorded.

After sifting through 1,000+ nominations for the best agricultural educators in five states, Nationwide and Freeport Insurance Center posthumously honored Ed Curry of Pearl City High School in Pearl City as a finalist for Illinois’ Ag Educator of the Year through Nationwide’s Golden Owl Award.

Freeport Salvation Army falls short of their Christmas budgeted goal Freeport Salvation Army leaders are scrambling as the deadline for the 2019 Christmas Campaign quickly approaches. A shortage of $40,000 still remains to meet their budgeted minimum goal of $197,000.

“The bells may be silent until next fall but the need to meet unmet needs in Freeport hasn’t stopped.” Captain Jim Brickson Officials from the organization testify their gratitude for the outpouring of ongoing financial support and ability to serve indirectly to those less fortunate. Pearl City third and fourth graders practice kindness

The Pearl City third and fourth graders spent the month of December focusing on Kindness. Students participated in a Random Acts of Kindness Challenge throughout the month, where they were challenged to complete one act of kindness every day of the month. In addition, the students brought in spare change (and dollars) to make a group donation to Heifer International. The students collected enough money to donate a pair of alpacas. The alpacas will provide income for a family, as well as wool that can be used for many things. Also, donating a pair will allow the recipient to pass on the gift to another family as the alpacas mate. For more information about Heifer International, you could visit Heifer.org.
