Meet Andrew and Barbara Sorg. Andrew is the first born of Andrew and Anna Sorg. “Andy” and “Barb” have been working side by side for almost 57 years. Andy enjoys tinkering in his garage, long drives, and nature. He loves peanuts, banana cream pie, and ring bologna. Barb enjoys cooking, gardening, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Barb loves coconut cream pie, ribs, and cucumbers. These two are rock stars, still working at age 81 and 78.

The Sacia family In the beginning, NITE Equipment was only a dream in the mind of a young man from central Wisconsin named Jim Sacia.

He loved anything with wheels and an engine. He loved to drive and he loved to work. He was a real “people person” too.

After a stint in the U.S. Army, a college degree from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls, and a short career as a police officer, Jim became an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

All the while, Jim’s love for equipment and the farming industry never faded. He and his wife Jenny (also a Wisconsin farm girl and River Falls graduate) purchased a farm near Winnebago, Ill., just across the Wisconsin/Illinois border.

There they raised three terrific boys (Jerry, John and Jesse), Paint and Pinto horses, and many beloved dogs. They called their farm “Treasured Times Ranch,” an appropriate name only if a ranch can include basketball hoops, four wheelers, sports cars and lots of musical instruments.

The few pieces of machinery required to do the work on a small farm just weren’t enough for Jim. And besides, his boys were

getting older and one of them might want to buy and sell equipment with an engine and wheels some day.

So NITE Equipment began to come to fruition in the late seventies. Oldest son Jerry marveled at the machinery and he marveled at his Dad. He learned the names of all the tools and soon became pretty good with a wrench, a screwdriver, and a hammer.

With Jenny’s assistance, a little help from the boys in between school and sports activities, and the assistance of a handful of good employees, NITE Equipment was first operated out of a pole barn on the north side of the family farm. Jim did the buying and selling in his spare time. Used tractors and construction equipment were the items typically offered for sale. Then the decision was made to try to sell “a few trailers” and the business began to steadily grow.

In 1997, as Jim approached his retirement date from the FBI, twelve acres at a prime location on Highway 20 just 8 miles due west of Rockford, Ill., was purchased. An office and shop were erected and tons and tons of gravel were hauled in.

On any given day 300 trailers of all shapes and sizes, 50 to 60 tractors, trucks of all sizes, and construction machinery are displayed along with farm implements, recreational equipment, lawn and garden equipment, and various other items available for purchase.

Today, NITE Equipment continues on as a familyowned and operated business. Changes continue and more changes are on the horizon.

After serving 6 terms (11 years) as the Illinois State Representative of the 89th district, Jim and Jenny have not slowed down. Jim keeps busy with a little side project called Memory Hill – Classics of Yesteryear, where he buys and sells classic cars and trucks, tractors and construction equipment.

And after all these years Jenny is still toiling long hours keeping the NITE Equipment books and serving lunch three times a week for their 15 or so employees. And let’s not forget those three bundleof-joy grandkids Tully, Ellie and Charleigh that keep

them on their toes, or Jenny’s mother Lucille, who at the time of this writing is still hanging on at the ripe old age of 106.

Their eldest son Jerry continues to serve as General Manager, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the business as well as buying, trading and transporting equipment. Middle son John is married and still serving our country in the Wisconsin Air National Guard. And last but certainly not least, their youngest son Jesse is married with those three bundle-of-joys and is currently filling the allimportant and un-enviable role of NITE Equipment Service Writer.

NITE Equipment continues to invest in good employees, tools and programs to improve customer service which we know will result in higher customer satisfaction. And we still strive for excellence in what we do day to day while continuing to wrestle with how to progress in a market that is rapidly increasing in competitors and competitiveness. The Mitchell brothers: The Mitchell family has farmed in northern Illinois since the mid-1800s. The grandparents bought the farm currently located in Winnebago, Ill., just west of Rockford, in the 1960s. Since our grandparents bought their first dairy cows, each generation has grown the farm to support more family members and keep the farming legacy alive.

Today, brothers John and Aaron Mitchell manage the farm, which is part of the Prairie Farms Co-Op. Most of their milk is taken to a Rockford processing plant, which mainly provides milk cartons for schools.

They milk 380 cows three times a day and grow corn and soybeans with their dad’s cousin. His kids are in college now, so they work towards making room for them in the family business, as well.

Always growing, always learning John and Aaron both attended the University of Illinois majoring in animal science, knowing we wanted to return to the family farm after college. “Our focus was on getting an education that would improve our farming practices and grow our farm to support more people,” said John Mitchell.

“Aaron took an interest in genetics, so he is primarily in charge of breeding and calf-care on the farm, whereas John oversees the cows. When you milk nearly 400 cows three times a day, you need to have some extra hands, so we work together with a team of employees to make sure the cows are well cared for.”

Sustainability on our farm “We don’t waste anything on our farm.

Manure from the cows gets reused for fertilizer on fields. That fertilizer helps our corn grow which we harvest and use to feed the animals. Even water from the milking parlor gets recycled.”

Caring for farm animals during an Illinois winter “Whether or not you’re a parent, I think it’s pretty common knowledge that when a baby is born, those first few days and even weeks are critical for short-term growth and long-term health,” said John. “It’s not so different for the calves that I spend my days caring for on our dairy farm Just like human babies, calves are born all year. However, calves are born outside, whether it’s 70 degrees and sunny or -10 degrees with 40 mph winds.

Providing milk, dairy products from family farm

Winter can be a very challenging time for raising calves, as they don’t have a lot of extra energy reserves to keep themselves warm or fight off any sickness.

“As farmers, we know that the better we care for our farm animals, the healthier they will be, and the more nutritious, sustainably raised milk we can provide to our communities,” said John. “That’s why we have routines in place to ensure our farm animals get the best start possible.”

Daily calf care routine Any frozen water is replaced with fresh, warm water when the bottle calves are fed in the morning and night. Special jackets are used on the youngest calves to help keep them warm. Fresh straw bedding is provided daily so they have a clean, warm place to lay down. Calves are monitored daily to make sure they look healthy and are eating well.

Barn tech features: The Mitchells calf (and cow) barns both have curtain systems (like roller shades) on the outside walls, allowing us to keep them closed for warmth during the winter months. Thermostats on the curtains will automatically open or close based on set temperatures.

Calves also need good, clean air in the barn to keep them healthy, so they have ventilation tubes over their pens to help keep fresh air flowing into the barn. The tubes are designed so that they bring fresh air to the calf’s pen, but don’t create a draft on the calf that would make her cold.

This way, calves get fresh air even on the coldest days of the year.

When these steps are taken, farm animals are set up for the best success. A good, healthy calf will grow quicker, and get into the milking herd faster.

Getting calves back to healthy There are two big illnesses that we keep an eye on in our calves: scours (diarrhea) and pneumonia. A calf with diarrhea may lose a lot of fluids, so they’re given extra electrolytes, along with her milk to replace the fluids she loses (kind of like Pedialyte for children). She might also get a bolus (large pill) that helps promote good gut health to help get her through the illness.

With pneumonia, calves are treated with an antibiotic to help kill the infection.

“We work with our veterinarian to provide medicine to calves when they’re sick – just like you may work with your

doctor to treat you and your family when ill. And, when our milking cows get medicine, their milk is withheld from the market and does not enter the food supply.

The milk – and meat – you buy at the grocery store never contains antibiotics.”

Caring for our calves might not sound so different than caring for your children.

We do our best to prevent sickness, but

sometimes, farm animals just get sick. And then we do everything we can to get them back to healthy.

Just like kids, our farm animals rely on us to take care of them no matter what is going on in the world. It’s so important to me and my family to provide them with the best care possible, so that hopefully they can live long, happy lives.

Five signs that it’s time to sell the family business Owning and operating a family business is a big part of the American dream. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 90% of all North American business enterprises are family-owned.

But along with realizing that dream comes a bittersweet reality for some family business owners – knowing when it’s time to sell. And that can be a challenge as they wrestle with deep emotional ties to the business and various selling options, says Terry Monroe (founder and president of American Business Brokers & Advisors (ABBA) and author of Hidden Wealth: The Secret to Getting Top Dollar for Your Business.

“One of the most challenging parts of owning and operating a family business is succession planning,” Monroe says.

“While many family business owners may dream of passing ownership of the business onto future generations, keeping the business within the family isn’t always a viable option.

“There are many other reasons owners come to the often hard, sometimes easy decision to sell – burnout, profitability, dramatic changes in their industry, a favorable tax climate, etc. But with the economy rapidly changing, it’s a reckoning for some, a fork in the road, and you need to read the signs.”

Monroe gives five signs that it’s time to sell the family business: Your children are not interested in the business “If you put your kids through college

There is nothing wrong with laying out the facts regarding the opportunity that the family business presents to them, but forcing the company on your children will only result in resentment or poor performance, or both.”

Your children are not capable Not everyone has what it takes to run a business, Monroe says, and when unqualified children are allowed to take over, the results can be disastrous. “This is where the saying ‘Thunder, Blunder, Under’ came from,” Monroe says. “It

means the first generation made the business successful, the second generation floundered and somehow kept the business together, and the third generation let the business go under.”

Ownership has become too diluted “Unless the company is always growing, it is hard to support a growing number of owners,” Monroe says. “This is true whether they work in the business or not, because the company can’t keep paying salaries or dividends or bonuses to those not in the business or individuals who are not working full-time there. And having too many owners often disrupts the managing of the company.”

Casey’s Sewing Center dates back to 1955

In 1955, Casey Burgstede started his sewing machine career with the Singer Co. in the Beloit Mall. In 1962, he became the manager of the Beloit store and for the next 16 years earned several awards from the Singer Co. for excellence in-store management and customer service. In 1978, the store moved to the Janesville Mall, and when the Singer Co. discontinued its retail business Casey bought the store in Janesville and renamed it Casey’s Sewing Center Meet the owners Brian and Ann The Lankford’s moved Casey’s Sewing Center from Beloit Lankford purchased to its current location at 242 Allen St., Clinton, Wis. Dewey’s began as a service station garage in 1955. In 1958 when the only local tow truck driver was killed, Dewey was asked to take over the tow truck. At the time, he only planned on being in the towing business for 2 years.

Over 50 years later the company is still going strong with the 3rd generation working and the 4th generation learning to someday be a part of the business as well.

One employee always says that if there was work to be done Dewey was there.

He never sent an employee out if he himself wasn’t already working. In 1968 Dewey’s expanded from an Illinois company to include a second location in Wisconsin. Dewey’s still operates to serve both Illinois and Wisconsin today.

Over the years Dewey’s has expanded time and time again. What started off as a one truck, one man show has become a large family business complete with two

flatbeds, one light duty truck, one medium truck, three heavy duty trucks (including the latest 75 ton rotator), and air bags.

Besides upgrading trucks to keep up with technology, Dewey always made sure that his drivers learned the latest techniques. Our employees range from 30+ years of experience to the rookies who are learning from our pros.

In order to keep them on their toes, our drivers have been certified through The Towing and Recovery Association of America, Wreckmaster, or both. Our mechanics are also trained to keep up the technology of vehicle maintenance through ASE Certifications.

Dewey was concerned about the safety of not only his drivers, but also everyone in the towing business. In order to make a difference, he supported numerous committees including the chairman for the Wisconsin Towing Association of which Dewey’s is a charter member.

Dewey worked with Wisconsin legislation to get

the Move Over or Slow Down law in order to keep emergency response personnel safe on the sides of roads and highways. In 1994 Dewey was inducted into the Towing Hall of Fame in Chattanooga, Tenn., in recognition of his constant efforts to improve the towing industry.

In 2007 Dewey passed away, but his legacy lives on not only at Dewey’s, but also in the towing industry. The business is still run the same way he started it in 1958 with the exception of technological improvements.

Elev815 pays a visit to Main Street Meats in Roscoe

The Elevators, members of Elev815, along with their guests, visited Main Street Meats, on Thursday, Aug. 15, where they met owners Amy and Jim King and their son Matt. The 6,000 sq. Ft store that is located at 9515 N. Second St. in Roscoe.

Matt led over 25 community members and business owners on a tour of the store including “back of the store” where meats are cut, prepared and dried.

Following the tour, it was time for everyone to try samples of meats, cheese and chocolate pie.

Jim King related the story of how the family of seven arrived at their present occupation and location.

In 2006, Matt was employed at Main Street Meats, owned by Bob Prosser. The butcher shop was located in Main Street Square in Roscoe. When Prosser decided to sell the store, Matt urged his parents to buy the property and make it a family business.

After purchasing the store, Jim and Amy added additional inventory. (Roscoe residents fondly remember the hot dog cart stationed in the parking lot outside the store.)

The store prospered and the Kings decided to expand further in 2011. They purchased what was once the Town & Country Feed Store, tore it down and constructed a newer and larger store plus some additional storage buildings.

Matt is the store’s General Manager.

He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Master Meat Crafter Program.

In an effort to improve the economy and stabilize residential neighborhoods, multiple community partners today announced the recapitalization of the Northern Illinois Community Development Corporation (NICDC).NICDC, in cooperation with the City of Rockford and Winnebago County, has secured commitments for $3.5 million in funds.

The group will leverage those funds by a factor of five by collaborating with local financial institutions to lend to small businesses that likely would not receive funding otherwise. In addition to the financial institutions, partners include the U.S. Small Business Administration, City of Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Illinois Finance Authority.

The money will be loaned to create jobs and rehabilitate vacant residential structures for home ownership. With the new pledged capital, NICDC will have more than $4.5 million to lend to small businesses.

NICDC has pledged $1 million of the

funds to support small business owners who purchase and improve foreclosed, abandoned and underutilized residential properties in at-risk neighborhoods and resell these renovated properties for owneroccupied use.

NICDC was established in 1991 as a forprofit corporation owned by six member financial institutions: Associated Bank, Blackhawk Bank, Midland States Bank, Rockford Local Development Corporation (by virtue of a donation by PNC of its ownership shares), Stillman BancCorp and U.S. Bank.

With the recapitalization of NICDC, the following new bank shareholders will be added: Illinois Bank & Trust, Rockford Bank & Trust, Northwest Bank, State Bank of Davis and German American State Bank, while Blackhawk Bank is increasing its ownership interest. Rockford Local Development Corporation, a 501-c(6) not-for-profit economic development corporation, has been NICDC’s management company since its inception.

AW Anderson Agency: A leader of the Loves Park community It was on June 6, 1941, that Arthur W. Anderson embarked on what was to become a very successful career in the insurance profession. His early insurance career, however, was interrupted with the outbreak of World War II where he served in the field artillery division of General Patton’s Third Army in Europe. After returning from the war, he resumed working in the insurance field.

In 1955, Art opened his first office at the Meadowmart on Windsor Road with only two employees. With a great deal of hard work in the early years, the AW Anderson Agency began to grow. It was at this time that Art Anderson looked for a more visible location for a new office building.

Groundbreaking for that new location occurred in 1959 at 6464 North Second Street in Loves Park, the current location of the office. The new facility offered housing for the agency as well as the regional claims department for Pekin Insurance.

As the community of Loves Park began to flourish in the early years of the town’s incorporation, so did the AW Anderson Agency. The office was incorporated and in 1963, Carl Lee joined the office as a producer and minority partner in the agency.

Carl worked primarily in the life and health field in spurring on growth of the newly organized life company of Pekin Insurance.

Crawford DeWitt and Debbie Nelson both joined the agency in 1968 as a producer and secretary respectively. It was shortly after this time that the agency became departmentalized to enable employees to specialize in certain areas of insurance to provide their customers with the best service possible.

The decade of the 1970s saw considerable changes to the agency. First, the agency office had two separate additions to the building to accommodate the need for the added personnel required to provide the best service to their expanding client base.

In 1977, Art’s son, Jeff, joined the agency after serving as an adjuster with an insurance company to bring needed help in personal lines underwriting. Also in 1978 saw the addition of Tim Humpal as Life Department Manager. Tim brought previous experience as a successful life producer with Mass Mutual Financial Services.

In 1980, the agency experienced many changes. Mary Smith retired as a longtime secretary/office manager after 26 years of dedicated service. Steve Anderson was hired as a personal lines and life insurance producer and Gary Anderson followed a few months later to assist with the rapidly growing commercial department.

In this same year, the agency purchased the Peterson-Gibson Insurance Agency in neighboring Rockford which they ran as a separate office until merging it with the AW Anderson Agency in 1989. The acquisition of this agency allowed the AW Anderson Agency to expand to include more clients in the Rockford area.

In 1993, Carl Lee retired as Chairman of the Board after serving 30 years with the agency and was succeeded by Crawford DeWitt. Mark Taylor was added that same year as a commercial lines producer after working several years in the credit ilfe and health field. Crawford DeWitt remained as Chairman of the Board until his retirement in 1998 and was succeeded by Jeff Anderson.

After 2000, the agency was remodeled again and added Chris Anderson in 2005 and Kyle Anderson in 2008 as producers after their graduation from Carthage College. Their addition makes the office a third generation family-owned business bringing energy and new ideas to enhance the progress of the office in the new century.

Another renovation facelift was completed both on the inside and outside of the agency office in 2013 resulting in a more updated look while removing walls within the office. Gary Anderson also retired in that same year after 33 years as a commercial life producer and former President of the agency.

established with the purchase of Apple Insurance located in nearby Roscoe, Ill. The acquisition of this agency allowed that office to continue providing excellent customer service while expanding the services and products to those customers in Roscoe.

In 2016, Debbie Nelson retired after servicing the agency for 48 years. She is the second longest employee in agency history only exceeded by our founder, Arthur W. Anderson. It was in 2017 that Jeff Anderson decided to retire. He served in many capacities at the agency over his 40 years including Chairman of the Board.

The AW Anderson Agency has been the recipient of numerous awards from many companies including Pekin Insurance. They have maintained the status of being one of the top Property and Casualty agencies for Pekin Insurance for over 30 years and have received over 100 awards for outstanding life insurance production. Today, the agency has 13 employees with combined experience of over 250 years with many of our employees working there over 25 years or more.

Arthur Anderson’s personal life of achievements Born on Flag Day on June 14, 1922, in

Rockford, Art’s parents had immigrated to the United States from Sweden. He remained ever proud of his Swedish heritage and kept in close contact with his relatives in Sweden. Art grew up in Loves Park and attended schools in the Harlem School District.

Enterprising from a very young age, Art had his first job at the age of eight delivering the Saturday Evening Post. He later worked as a youth as a shoe shine boy at the Forest Hills Country Club only to become the President of the country club as an adult.

On June 6, 1941, he embarked on what was to become a very successful career in the insurance profession. His early insurance career, however, was interrupted with the outbreak of World War II where he served in the field artillery division of General Patton’s Third Army in Europe, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. At the end of the war, he helped to liberate prisoners in war camps.

After returning from the war, he married Betty Lou Ralston in 1950. They would later celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000 prior to her passing in 2001. It was in 1955 that Art opened his first office at the Meadowmart on Windsor Road with only two employees, and in 1959, Art broke ground for an insurance office at 6464 North Second Street in Loves Park – the current location of his office.

You receive an offer you can’t refuse This is rare, Monroe says, but when it happens you should know it is a great offer and take it. “Markets go up and markets go down,” he says. “Regardless what kind of business you are in, you should always know what the market value of your business is in your industry.”

Their sons, Jeff, Steve and Gary, have followed in his professional footsteps and are currently the majority owners of their father’s agency. In 2004 and 2008, the office added his grandsons, Chris and Kyle, to the staff, making the office a third generation business.

As the community of Loves Park began to flourish in the early years of its incorporation, so also did the AW Anderson Agency. Now the agency employs 12 full-time employees. The agency building has been enlarged and remodeled several times over the past years to accommodate the growing needs of its clients.

The evolution from birth to maturity of a successful business would not have been possible without leadership. It is not surprising that the office continued to grow under the leadership of Art Anderson into a professional and highly successful insurance agency.

Art was very active in the insurance industry during a career that spanned over 50 years. He began his tenure as a Board member of Pekin Insurance in 1970, retiring in 1995 after 25 years of dedicated service.

Art also served on the board for Rockford Mutual Insurance and was the Secretary-Treasurer of the Winnebago County Mutual Insurance Company.

He served in 1973 as President of the Illinois Association of Mutual Insurance Companies and was honored with the organization’s Lautum Award.

Many Rockford area organizations were beneficiaries of Art’s innumerable measures of energy, his constant pride of his hometown, and his vision and passion to do good for his community. To name only a few of Art’s contributions to the

In recognition for his civic pride, the gymnasium at Harlem High School was named after him in June of 1994 for his lifetime support of the school and its athletics program. He was often referred to as “Harlem’s Number One Fan,” which is

engraved on the plague, which now hangs in the gymnasium.

He served as chairman of the Loves Park’s beautification committee and was honored on two occasions as the parade marshall for the Young at Heart Festival.

The local history room of the North Suburban Library was named for Betty and Art Anderson for their effort in collecting and displaying the history of the City of Loves Park.

In 1997, he received the Excalibur Award given annually by the Rockford Register Star to their top individual community volunteer. His sense of community has become an important part of the philosophy of the AW Anderson Agency and has spilled over to his agency staff who have served in various volunteer capacities in the Rockford/Loves Park area.

Art Anderson has been a mover and a shaker in the Loves Park community for many, many years. He has given of his time and talents to any organization, regardless of its size or stature. His involvement was never passive.

To those who personally knew Art, he was keen-minded, persistent, ethical, creative, a visionary, caring and a mentor to many. He never let roadblocks in his life dissuade him from pursuing his dreams. His deep, folksy and ever-kind voice easily drew you in. He had a very special gift of pulling people together to bring projects to fruition.

Art loved his family, his insurance career, his community and his country.

His capacity to get things done in his career and his civic life both testify to the depth and breadth of his thinking, which earned him the respect and admiration of many.

Pritzker administration announces $11 million in grants awarded to support growth of minority-owned businesses across Illinois

DCEO Grants awarded to provide working capital for 32 minority-owned businesses and incubators Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) recently announced that 32 minority-owned businesses and business incubators will receive a total of $11 million as part of the state’s Minority-Owned Business Capital and Infrastructure Program.

These grants will equip minority-owned firms with resources to create jobs, build capacity, increase revenues, and revitalize properties in underserved communities.

Funding will reach businesses of all sizes and types, as well as community-based incubators working to help small and start-up businesses in diverse communities across the state. The development of new grant-funded projects is estimated to create hundreds of full-time and construction jobs for the surrounding community.

“At a time when businesses are facing significant setbacks due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Minority Capital Fund will help eliminate obstacles so minority-owned businesses can rebuild and

continue supporting their communities,” said Governor Pritzker. “These small, family-owned businesses are the backbone of Illinois, and capital grants will unlock funding to help them expand, create new jobs, and drive positive economic change for their communities.”

Created by the DCEO Office of Minority Economic Empowerment’s (OMEE), the program provides a first of its kind capital grant earmarked specifically to promote growth of minority-owned businesses. The program leverages bonded capital funds to support infrastructure investment in economically disadvantaged areas, as well as to contribute to the growth of minorityowned businesses, entrepreneurs and startups in priority community investment areas.

“Too many minority businesses in our state face the same challenges—including a lack of access to capital that prevents them from seeing the full potential of their business,” said Michael Negron, Assistant Director of DCEO. “We created this grant to

In total, 20 businesses were granted $8.1 million, and a dozen business incubators were granted over $2.9 million. This includes funding distributed to a diverse group of recipients – including community-based and youth organizations, as well as small and family-owned businesses, including restaurants, retail, manufacturing, a museum, roofing, and more. Grant recipients represent underserved communities across Illinois, as defined by the CDBG program.

Grant funding is being extended to Chicago, Peoria, East St Louis, Decatur, and more. The majority of the projects planned are for property acquisition and renovation— and every project is expected to create jobs.

“We would like to commend the Governor’s Office and the staff of DCEO for their efforts in supporting minority owned businesses in southern Illinois by directing these much-needed resources,” said Donald Johnson, owner of SRM Construction in East St. Louis.

“For companies like ours who are working to provide skills training and to create jobs in low-income communities, there has never been a more important time than now for this type of support.”

Grants were reviewed and evaluated on a competitive basis, with proposals evaluated against the following criteria: demonstrated need for capital, capacity to complete the project, and potential to create social impact for the surrounding community.

Minority business status was a prerequisite for eligibility of this program, as well as the project’s ability to create economic development in low-to-moderate income areas.

“Mercado on Fifth has been at the forefront of driving economic activity in the Quad Cities region, having helped develop over 20 new minority-owned businesses since 2017,” said Maria Ontiveros, President, Mercado on Fifth.

“The Minority-Owned Business Grant from Illinois OMEE will enable our expansion into a much-needed incubator facility to create more equitable growth in the community. As Founder Bob Ontiveros always says, ‘Everyone wins when someone gets an opportunity.”

The Peoria Minority Business Development Center, operated by the Black Business Alliance Peoria Chapter, is based in a community that has struggled economically for decades.

“The Peoria Minority Business Development Center plays a key role in a community that has suffered disinvestment for many decades – and serves to provide

our community members a place to launch and grow businesses that will be part of bringing back economic prosperity to our community,” said Denise Moore, Founder and CEO of the Black Business Alliance Peoria Chapter, Inc. “The OMEE Grant funds will allow us to create additional educational and training space for those individuals that struggled with learning the foundational elements of operating a successful business and provide an on-going support system to help them realize their goals.”

Individual applicants were eligible to receive up to $500,000 per project, and the amount of the award is based on anticipated costs associated with meeting project requirements and bond guidelines.

“This grant by the State of Illinois will have a profound impact on our business,” said Sharon White, owner of Vets and Cowboys, a veteran-owned business in Watseka. “It will allow us to carry out our mission by expanding our capacity to train more Veterans and minorities in farming and ranching careers through our hands-on, immersive certified Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) farm/ ranch training program. This in turn will help more Vets and Cowboys graduates excel and pursue land ownership in their communities.”

Grant funding is restricted to specific working capital use – including property acquisition, renovation, purchase of essential equipment, rehabilitation of publicly owned property, and communal infrastructure works, such as sidewalks, streets or other site improvements.

“The grant from the Office of Minority and Economic Empowerment (OMEE) was a key catalyst to moving forward with the purchase of the building that will be the new home of Xquina, one of the most innovative and culturally relevant business incubators in the country,” said Blanca Soto, Executive Director of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce. “Our organization will own the building and create a sustainable model for commercial corridor preservation and revitalization.”

Seth Atwood: A longtime Rockford family business Seth Glanville Atwood (June 2, 1917 – Feb. 21, 2010) was an American industrialist, community leader, and horological collector. He was the chairman and president of Atwood Vacuum Machine Company, one of the world’s Seth Atwood largest manufacturers of automobile body hardware, and a long-time leader of the Atwood family’s business which involved in manufacturing, banking and hotel industries, with over 2,500 employees.

In addition, Atwood was a director of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, and had served in the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago.

In 1971, Seth G. Atwood founded the Time Museum at the Clock Tower Resort in Rockford, Illinois, which later became one of the leading horological museums in the world with nearly 1,500 pieces of horological collection, including atomic clocks.

The museum’s notable collection included ancient Chinese sundials and water clocks, early pendulum clocks, a quarter-repeater by Thomas Tompion, Breguet Sympathique Clocks, and the Patek Philippe Henry Graves Supercomplication which currently holds the title of the most expensive watch ever sold at auction, fetching 24 million US dollars (23,237,000 CHF) in Geneva on Nov. 11, 2014. However, the museum was shut down in 1999 and its collection was sent to auctions over the years.

Early life Seth G. Atwood was born in Rockford,

Ill. on June 2, 1917. He attended Carleton College, and graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. degree in 1938. He later studied at the University of Wisconsin for a year, and obtained an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1940. From 1942-1946, he served as an officer in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander.

Seth G. Atwood later returned to Rockford and joined in the Atwood Vacuum Machine Company, which was founded by his father, Seth B. Atwood, and his uncle, James T. Atwood in 1909 specializing in manufacturing vacuum cleaners.

Family business By 1920, the Atwood Vacuum Machine Company had already shifted its focus from manufacturing vacuum cleaners to door silencers for cars. Eventually, the company began to manufacture a complete line of automobile body hardware. Seth G. Atwood became the president of the Atwood Vacuum Machine Company in 1953 when his father became chairman of the board.

In 1967, Seth G. Atwood became the chairman of the company, and under his leadership the company became the world’s “largest independent manufacturer of internal auto body hardware” in 1968.

In 1970, the company re-organized and established the Automotive and Contract Division and the Mobile Products Division, employing over 2,500 employees with five plants in Canada and the United States.

In 1971, the annual sale of the company reached around US$50 million. In 1985, Atwood Vacuum Machine was sold to Anderson Industries in Rockford,

Illinois; the annual sale of the company was US$138 million at the time of this acquisition.

Seth G. Atwood also managed other businesses of his family involving banking, venture capital, hotels and real estate properties.

Timepiece collection Time Museum In 1971, Seth G. Atwood founded the Time Museum at the Clock Tower Resort in Rockford, Illinois. The resort was originally built by the Atwood’s family in 1968. In 1980s, the museum became one of the leading horological museums in the world, with nearly 1,500 pieces of horological collection, including atomic clocks.

The museum’s notable collection included ancient Chinese sundials and water clocks by Su Song, early pendulum clocks, a quarter-repeater by Thomas Tompion, an astronomical and world time clock by Christian Gebhard, the Harrison wooden regulator clock, the Richard Glynn mechanical equinoctial standing Ring-Dial, and so on. In 1990s, the museum attracted over 50,000 visitors each year.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago kept and displayed a large portion of the original collection from the Time Museum until February 2004.

However, the museum was shut down in March 1999 when United Realty Corp., a company owned by Atwood family interests, sold the Clock Tower Resort to Regency Hotel Management.

As a result, the majority of the museum’s collection went to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and was on display from January 2001 to February 2004. In 2004, a campaign to raise US$35

million to buy the collection for Time Museum failed, and the collection was broken up with its timepieces sent to auctions.

Over the years, hundreds of items from the museum’s original collection went up for sale in Sotheby’s auctions, and several pieces became the world’s most expensive watches and clocks ever auctioned.

These included the Patek Philippe Henry Graves Supercomplication and the Breguet Sympathique Clock No.128 & 5009 (Duc d’Orléans Breguet Sympathique, owned

by Ferdinand Philippe, Duke of Orléans), which was originally restored by English watchmaker George Daniels at the request of Seth G. Atwood.

The Patek Philippe pocket watch currently holds the title of the most expensive watch ever sold at auction, fetching US$24 million US dollars (CHF 23,237,000) in Sotheby’s Geneva auction on Nov. 11, 2014. The Breguet Sympathique Clock, on the other hand, currently ranks as one of the most expensive clocks ever sold at auction, fetching US$6.80 million in Sotheby’s New York auction on Dec. 4, 2012.

Coaxial escapement During the quartz crisis in 1970s, Seth G. Atwood commissioned a mechanical timepiece from English watchmaker George Daniels to fundamentally improve the performance of mechanical watches.

As a result, Daniels invented the revolutionary coaxial escapement in 1974 and patented it in 1980. The Atwood watch for Seth G. Atwood was completed in 1976.

The coaxial escapement was later used in the watches of watch manufacturers such as Omega SA.

Erlander family established early Rockford businesses John Erlander was born in Slätthög, Kronobergs län, Småland, Sweden on April 7 1826. He emigrated to the United States in 1854 with his sister Kajsa Jönsdotter, and his brother Peter Magnus Jönsson. Their father was Jöns Petterson, John Erlander so their name was Jönsson. ​(Note: Surnames were not solidified in Sweden until the late 1800’s. Until that time children were identified by their father’s first name with the addition of either “son” or “dotter” to the end of the name--depending on their gender.)

John Erlander first settled in Chicago where he learned to operate a new, timesaving invention...the sewing machine. In 1855 he came to Rockford and worked as a tailor. His employer had a sewing machine, but did not know how to use it. John did, however know how to use it, and added to the business success through increased productivity.

Erlander was involved in several business ventures during his lifetime. In 1861, he entered into a partnership with Sven August Johnson (often referred to as S.A. Johnson). They open a tailoring and men’s clothing shop on East State Street, naming their business “Erlander & Johnson.”

According to John Erlander’s son Alfred, the men entered into their

partnership with the agreement that they were to share everything equally...and as the Vikings did, they swore in blood to keep the pledge. The clothing store flourished, and the partners remained in business until 1885 when Erlander sold his half of the business to Johnson. He was 59 years old at the time.

In 1876, the Rockford Union Furniture Company was organized by a small group of men meeting at the Erlander home. Jonas Peters, Erlander’s brotherin-law, had saved some money while serving in the Civil War. With this seed money Peters started the Union Furniture Company. John Erlander was elected President of the company. Jonas, formerly a cabinetmaker’s apprentice, served as Treasurer/Manager, and P.A. Peterson was elected company Secretary. The Union Furniture Company was a cooperative association with 25 members. Members helped to raise the initial capital for the business. It was the first of 25 area furniture factories that were formed as cooperatives. John Erlander was involved in several other business ventures and provided leadership in the Rockford community. He served on the boards of the Excelsior Furniture Company, the Central Furniture Company, and the Rockford Brick Company. He was also one of the primary organizers of the Swedish Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and was a stockholder in Manufacturer’s National Bank.

Family-owned businesses are economic powerhouses America’s economic engine Family businesses account for 64 percent of U.S. gross domestic product, generate 62 percent of the country’s employment, and account for 78 percent of all new job creation.

Family-owned businesses are the backbone of the American economy. Studies have shown about 35 percent of Fortune 500 companies are familycontrolled and represent the full spectrum of American companies from small business to major corporations.

The greatest part of America’s wealth lies with family-owned businesses. Family firms comprise 80 to 90 percent of all business enterprises in North America.

Roughly 90 percent of the families responding to a survey in “From Longevity of Firms to Trans-generational Entrepreneurship of Families: Introducing Family Entrepreneurial Orientation indicated that they control more than a single firm.

The results of the survey suggest that there is strong entrepreneurial activity undertaken by controlling families beyond their core (i.e., largest) company.

Small businesses, including many family firms, employ just over half of US workers. Of 113.4 million non-farm private sector workers in 2011, small firms with fewer than 500 workers employed 55 million and large firms employed 58.4 million. Firms with fewer than 20 employees employed 20.2 million.

Research shows that family businesses are less likely to lay off employees regardless of financial performance.

Family businesses have longevity Recent research has shown that continued family control can be efficient, since families are, for example, able to positively affect the resource inventory and usage of their firms, apply a long-term perspective allowing for unique strategic positioning, have less human resources problems and higher firm values, or drive new entrepreneurial activity.

What truly drives many family businesses is the sense of connection and identity the owners and their family members feel with the business.

The mean age of family control in the family’s core company is 60.2 years.

More than 30 percent of all family-owned businesses survive into the second generation. Twelve percent will still be viable into the third generation, with 3 percent of all family businesses operating at the fourth-generation level and beyond.1 The tenure of leadership in a Family Enterprise is four to five times longer than their counterparts.

Of primary importance among family firm wealth holders is transferring not only their financial wealth but also their values surrounding their wealth to subsequent generations. Primary values taught include encouraging children to earn their own money, philanthropy, charitable giving and volunteering.

The environment for innovation in family businesses improves when more generations of the owning family are actively involved in the business.

Family businesses retain talent better than their competitors do: only 9 percent of family businesses work forces turned over annually (versus 11 percent at non-family firms), in a Harvard Business Review study. They create a culture of commitment and purpose, avoiding layoffs during downturns, promoting from within and investing in people.

Family businesses create wealth Family-owned businesses have strong entrepreneurial activity across time. On average and over the family’s history these families controlled 6.1 firms, created 5.4 firms, added 2.7 firms through merger and acquisition activity, spun off 1.5 firms, and shifted industry focus 2.1 times. These families exhibit a significant level of entrepreneurial activity over time, in terms of rearranging the portfolio of activities through founding activity, mergers and

acquisitions, as well as divestments.

The largest family-owned business in the US is Wal-Mart Inc., with $499.4. billion in net sales and 2.2 million employees worldwide in 2016.

222 owners and executives of mostly midsized, family-owned businesses were surveyed.

Approximately 70percent of the respondents represented companies with revenues of $200 million or more, while 25percent were with companies generating revenues of $500 million or more.

In the S&P 500 companies, ROI is greater in family businesses, with a 6.65 percent greater return than non-family firms.

Family businesses know how to do business right Family-owned businesses practice good governance. A Harvard Business Review study showed 94 percent of surveyed family firms were controlled by supervisory or advisory boards. Family representation on these boards averaged 31 percent, demonstrating a clear separation between family and business in most cases.

Family businesses leaders focus on the next generation, not the next quarter. They tend to embrace strategies that put customers and employees first and emphasize social responsibility.

Family businesses develop leaders in unlikely places – more than 40 percent of companies in the Harvard Business review study included members of the next generation on their boards and committees in order to nurture their business and management skills.

Family businesses have powerful internal cultures.

A study of 114 family firms and 1,200 other large companies for their organizational health found that family-owned businesses scores significantly higher on things like worker motivation and leadership.

74 percent believe they hae a stronger culture and values than non-family firms. And, 72 percent measure success differently – not just growth and profit.

Women matter in family business Women are increasingly participating in family businesses leadership. Currently, 24 percent of family businesses are led by a female CEO or President, and 31.3 percent of family businesses surveyed indicate that the next successor is a female. Nearly 60 percent of all family-owned businesses have women in top management team positions.

Over the past five years, woman-owned family businesses have increased by 37percent.

Female-owned family firms are typically 10 years younger than male-owned firms and more are firstgeneration businesses.

Female-owned family firms experience greater family loyalty to the business, agreement with its goals, and pride in the business.

Woman-owned family firms have a 40percent lower rate of family member attrition in the business.

Family businesses face big issues By 2017, it was estimated that 40.3 percent of family business owners expected to retire, creating a significant transition of ownership in the US. Less than half of those expecting to retire in five years have selected a successor.

Nearly half of family business owners (43 percent) have no succession plan in place.

Even though nearly 70 percent of family businesses would like to pass their business on to the next generation, only 30 percent will actually be successful at transitioning to the next generation.

A majority of family businesses (60 percent) believe that their ethical standards are more stringent than those of competing firms. They also report ethical standards being discussed often or always at meetings with employees, in discussions with customers and during board meetings.

Eight tips to run a successful family business According to the Family Firm Institute, family-owned businesses account for two-thirds of businesses worldwide, making them essential for both economic growth and job creation.* In fact, some of the biggest companies in the world— including Wal-Mart, BMW, Tyson, and Ford—are familyowned businesses, a far cry from the “mom and pop” corner stores many associate with family-run companies.

While family businesses may be a major economic driver, only a mere 30 percent endure into a second generation, 12 percent last into a third generation, and just three percent make it to the fourth generation.† What’s the secret for a successful family-run business?

We’ve rounded up eight tips to ensure your family business, or the one you may be working for, endures through the generations.

Communicate Families have their own way of communicating, and, as many family therapists will tell you, it is not always the best way. Defy convention and make open, regular communication an essential part of your family business.

When you sense communication problems, confront them immediately. Larger issues at play? Bring in an outside consultant.

Evolve When it comes to longevity, and the success that comes with it, changing with the times is essential for any business, especially multigenerational family businesses.

Whether it is an aversion to new technology or resistance to changing cultural norms, a family-run business—and the people behind it, regardless of age—must evolve or risk alienating both employees and customers.

Set boundaries Leaders of flourishing family-owned businesses know that setting boundaries is critical to establishing and maintaining success. Institute and uphold a clear separation between family and business. In other words, keep family issues out of the boardroom, and keep work at the office.

Practice good governance Setting boundaries also extends to the governance of family-run companies. Good governance requires the involvement of leaders outside the family. This oversight— employed by leading family businesses worldwide— typically takes the shape of a professional, advisory, or supervisory board comprised of non-family members with a limited number of family representatives.

Recruit from the outside Just as it is crucial to establish governance with nonfamily members at the helm, it is essential to recruit outside your family for both staff and leadership positions.

There is a world of talent out there. Successful family companies tap into this talent pool for skills and expertise family members don’t have.

Treat employees like family Successful family-owned businesses treat everyone as family, whether they are relatives or not. This practice often extends to customers as well. Employed by recreational vehicle manufacturer Jayco, family-run for more than 40 years, this tactic of “redefining family” encourages staff and leadership “to raise the bar as far as value offered,” explains Jayco CEO Derald Bontrager. Instead of relying on industry standards, “you must instead ask yourself, ‘Is this what I would do if it were one of my siblings?”‡ Make it optional A good family business doesn’t strong-arm or guilt relatives into joining the business. It makes working for the company optional. Any company, family-run or otherwise, needs employees who are passionate about both the corporation and their role within it. Allowing family to come to the company on their own leads to happier employees and better business.
