Photos needed to be taken and posted to Instagram between June 15 and Aug. 15.

Photographers entered their work

in any one of three categories: Water, Wildlife, or Way of Life. Participants were allowed to enter up to three photos in each category.

A committee of District staff members narrowed down the entries to three finalists in each category.

During the week of Aug. 19, finalists’ photos were posted to the Conservation District’s Facebook page at DiscoverMCCD. Our followers had a week to vote for their favorite. The photo with the most likes in each category is the winner.

The winner in each category received a $25 Amazon gift card, and will have their photo featured in an upcoming issue of Landscapes Magazine (circulation 20,000).

Migratory Madness Evening Join volunteer bird enthusiast Dave Miller on a search for migratory birds on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Meet at the Kettle Parking Lot at Glacial Park Conservation Area, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood.

After the hike we’ll gather to compare notes and tally all the species we spotted. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them.

Autumn Wildflowers on the move

Come out and enjoy some of the last blooming wildflowers of the season on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Kishwaukee Headwaters Conservation Area, 1606 Dean Street, Woodstock. We will hike the trail in search of these autumn wildflowers while also learning about how different plants get their seeds to disperse. Is it a Dropper? Plopper? Popper? Note: Flower picking and seed collecting is prohibited in District Conservation Areas unless authorized by staff.

For all ages 5+. Anyone under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Nature at Night: Nocturnal Animals Here’s your chance to enjoy one of our sites after sunset, when it would normally be closed. Come out for a self-guided night hike on a designated trail on Friday, Nov. 1 from 6:30 to

8 p.m. at Brookdale – Paulson Road Shelter, 2105 Paulson Road, Woodstock. A staff member will greet you and provide you with some information about the site and what you can expect to see and hear on your hike.

During this time, nocturnal animals will begin to emerge to explore the night.

Lost Valley Nature Detectives self-guided outdoor family exploration It’s a beautiful day for hiking, bird watching, and wildlife tracking. Start your Lost Valley Nature Detective adventure at Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Rte. 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. Indoor displays and activities will get you ready for an outdoor exploration and each month features a new topic. Check out the free exploration backpack to borrow binoculars and field guides and grab a scavenger hunt to help you search the wild spaces of Glacial Park.

Read a story about animals that live underground and try your hand at two digging skills: digging and tun-

neling. After your outdoor prairie scavenger hunt, return to the visitor center to make your own ground squirrel craft to take home.

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH), Elgin Recycling, and The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County are partnering to bring you the third of our four recycling events in 2019. On Saturday, Sept. 7, from 8 a.m. until noon, McHenry County residents may drop off electronic devices at the Grafton Township Road District Building, 10109 Vine St. Huntley.

The following electronic devices will be accepted: Televisions and Computer Monitors (fee applies) Computers (desktop, laptop, netbook, notebook, tablet), Keyboards, and Mice Printers, Fax Machines, Scanners, Small Scale Servers DVD Players, DVD Recorders, VCRs Video Game Consoles, Portable Digital Music Players Digital Converter Boxes, Cable and Satellite Receivers Fees apply to recycle TVs and Computer Monitors ($15 up to 20 inches and $25 dollars for 21 inches or larger). Elgin recycling will accept credit cards or cash onsite.

District 155 ranks first in McHenry County for Best School District Community High School District 155 was named best school district in McHenry County by Niche.

Rankings are based on data from the Department of Education, the US Census, and multiple reviews from parents and students. D155 earned the top spot out of 15.

A senior who wrote a review said, “District 155 cultivates students to be great, and consistently demonstrates excellence. All of the staff are amazing, they always encourage students to do our best.”

Nationally, the district ranked in the top nine percent for best school districts, and placed in the top four percent for the best teachers. In the

state of Illinois, D155 ranked eighth out of 638 schools for having the best teachers and placed in the top three percent for the best district.

One parent review said, “The districts fundamental approach to the student’s education is constantly challenging the teachers and staff to put forth our ideas and experiences to better the way education is presented.”

On Friday, Aug. 23, the Marengo Police Dept. arrested Steven G. McClure, 34, of Waukegan, for the alleged offenses of Driving on a Suspended License and an In-State Warrant.

On Saturday, Aug. 24, the Marengo Police Dept. responded to an accident involving a motorcycle on the

500 block of West Grant Hwy. After investigating the incident. Charles R. See, 36, of Marengo, was charged for the alleged offenses of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving with License Revoked, Improper Lane Usage, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.

Mr. See was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained in the accident. He was given a Notice to Appear on the above charges. The investigation on this case is still ongoing.

While pertaining primarily to students of Huntley High School and their families, this will also affect the traffic flow for event visitors: We are excited to share with you some long-awaited details about the fine arts expansion project that has been in the planning stage for our building for some time. This addition and renovation will provide our students engaged in fine arts classes and extracurricular activities with state-of-the-art facilities in which to practice and showcase their talents.

Watching out for turtles Shout out to Officer Charlie Montgomery who, while off-duty, found a painted turtle that had been hit by a vehicle. He brought her to our Wildlife Resource Center, and although they weren’t able to save the mother turtle, they extracted and incubated the eggs she was about to lay. Today, along with our Wildlife Resource Center staff, Officer Montgomery released the young turtles near where their mother was found. Our conservation police officers not only protect the people who use our sites, they look out for the land and animals.

Crystal Lake School District 155 summer construction wraps up All District 155 schools opened successfully on August 14 after substantially completing 22 construction projects this summer. The Board of Education approved $14,552,000 in capital projects for the summer of 2019, including kitchen classroom remodels; tennis courts replacement, air conditioning, and parking lot replacements.

“We want to thank the community and taxpayers for their support as we continue to enhance our learning spaces to give our students and staff the opportunity to be successful in their future endeavors,” said Steve Olson, D155 superintendent. “We understand the importance of showcasing these projects with our community so they can see how their tax dollars are being spent.”

The district communications office in collaboration with the operations department produced 10 videos to highlight construction updates, which were viewed more than 24,000 times and totaled more than 79 hours.
