Sheriff’s Office investigates fatal traffic crash

Two men were pronounced dead following a single-vehicle traffic crash in unincorporated Nunda Township.

The investigation indicates that at 11:48 p.m., on Sept. 16, a 2001 Ford Explorer was traveling southbound in the 1400 block of S. Lilly Lake Road when it ran off of the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver, a 29-year-old male, was entrapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The rear seat passenger, a 33-year-old male, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The front seat passenger, a 23-year-old man was transported to Centegra Hospital-McHenry for non-life-threatening injuries. All occupants of the Ford were from Crystal Lake.

The front seat passenger and the driver had been wearing their seat belts. The rear passenger had not been wearing his seat belt. Airbags did deploy in the vehicle.

At this time the cause of the crash is undetermined. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit and McHenry County Coroner’s Office. Members of the McHenry Township Fire Protection District provided patient care.

Marengo Police Beat On Saturday, Sept. 2, the Marengo Police Dept. arrested Jennifer S. La Force, 38, of Marengo, for the alleged offenses of failure to signal and driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Monday, Sept. 11, the Marengo Police Dept. arrested Randall H. Sundquist, 60, of Marengo, for the alleged offenses; of driving with expired license plates, driving with a suspended drivers license, forging an Illinois registration sticker and an in-state warrant out of Kane County.

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the Marengo Police Dept. arrested Chelsea E. Carr, 22, of Marengo for the alleged offenses of five counts of theft.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, the Marengo Police Dept. arrested Kaylea Luchtman, 22, for the alleged offense of aggravated battery to a Peace Officer.

On Sept. 20, Marengo Police arrested two individuals connected to the burglaries of several Marengo businesses and one residence that occurred in the early morning hours of Sept. 19 and 20. Arrested were; Robert H. Charping, 56, of Marengo, on charges of five counts of burglary, four counts of theft, and five counts of damage to property Nichole R. DePew, 38, of Marengo, on charges of one count of burglary, one count of possession of stolen property, and one count of criminal trespass.

The McHenry County Multi-Jurisdictional SWAT team pulled a plane weighing nearly 180,000 lbs at O’Hare Airport last week to raise money for Special Olympics.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, members of APD, Algonquin Public Works, and the Good Shepherd Radiology Department participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Special Olympics Plane Pull at O’Hare. They were able to pull the below pictured plane 12 feet in 8.16 seconds! Most importantly, the team raised $1950.00 for Special Olympics of Illinois!

Former Huntley resident indicted on bankruptcy fraud charges A former Huntley man was indicted last week by a federal grand jury on charges of bankruptcy fraud.

Tracy L. Sunderlage, 71, was charged with one count of making false statements in a bankruptcy case and one count of making false statements under oath in a bankruptcy proceeding.

As alleged in the indictment, Sunderlage filed a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Petition on Aug. 12, 2011. On Aug. 30, 2011, Sunderlage filed various bankruptcy schedules and a Statement of Financial Affairs, both signed under penalty of perjury.

According to the indictment, Sunderlage made false statements on his Statement of Financial Affairs, concealing fraudulent transfers of 100,000

shares of Gulf Keystone Petroleum Ltd. and approximately $63,242 and $109,493 to a relative, and concealing his receipt of $241,000 of income from the sale of ownership interest in Gulf Keystone Petroleum, his receipt of $25,000 of income from the sale of ownership interests in other companies, his personal property interests in various financial accounts, and his 2002 Jaguar vehicle.

It is further alleged in the indictment that on May 14, 2012, Sunderlage falsely testified under oath at a meeting of creditors, fraudulently concealing assets from the bankruptcy trustee, creditors, and the United States Trustee, including complete information on a transfer of $63,242 Sunderlage made to a relative.

Each charge in this case carries a maximum potential penalty of up to five years in prison, a term of supervised release of up to three years following imprisonment, and a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from that offense, whichever is greater. If convicted, the Court must impose a reasonable sentence under federal sentencing statutes and the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines.

Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announced that 26-year-old Durelle Hall of Woodstock, Ill., who was found guilty after a jury trial in July for the offense of Drug Induced Homicide was sentenced today to 14 years in the Illinois Dept. of Corrections. Under the Truth in Sentencing Guidelines, Hall must serve 75 percent of the sentence.

The case centered around the overdose death of a 20-year-old victim who was found unresponsive on Oct. 6, 2015 after ingesting Heroin that had been laced with Fentanyl.

An investigation into the death by the Marengo Police Department revealed that the victim had purchased the Heroin from Hall.

Hall still has several other unrelated pending matters in McHenry County including Delivery of a Controlled Substance Within 1000 feet of a School, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, and Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver Cannabis. Any sentences imposed on these unrelated matters would be served consecutively to the 14-year sentence imposed.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Randi Freese and Rita Gara. The case investigation was led by Detective Boeckh and Sergeant Boyce of the Marengo Police Department.

Police arrest Lake in the Hills man for growing cannabis On Monday, Sept.

11, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force (which includes members of the Lake in the Hills Police Department) arrested Thomas Discher Thomas Discher after serving a search warrant in the 100 block of Grant Avenue in Lake in the Hills and finding a clandestine cannabis “grow” operation.

Detectives received information that there was such an operation at a residence in the 100 block of Grant Avenue in Lake in the Hills. An investigation was opened that led to a search warrant. At the time the search warrant was served, Discher was inside the residence with his wife and four children.

Detectives recovered 74 cannabis plants, most 6 feet or taller; 182.2 grams of cannabis packaged for sale; additional packaging materials and equipment; and other related articles. The estimated street value of the cannabis seized is approximately $56,064.

We urge any citizen’s to use caution when hypodermic syringes are located and to contact the MPD at 815-568-7231, for their recovery and disposal.

If you know someone that struggles with addiction, the A Way Out program is offered by McHenry County and the MPD is a participating department.

How it works A Way Out – McHenry County offers substance abuse treatment 24/7, whether in-patient or out-patient, to anyone in McHenry County that wishes to seek recovery. All a participant needs to do is to follow these easy steps: 1. Walk through the main doors of any of the participating police departments.

2. Tell the clerk at the reception window that you are here to participate in A Way Out – McHenry County. If you are seeking help after open lobby hours, locate the call box on the wall and tell dispatch you want to participate in “A Way Out – McHenry County.” A police department representative will be with you to take you through the next steps.

Next steps 1. The police department representative will meet with you and take you and/or your loved ones through the onboarding process, which includes filling out a waiver and program forms. If you are in possession of any illegal or legal drugs or drug paraphernalia, the representative will take them from you. You will not be arrested or charged for any drugs or drug paraphernalia turned over.

2. If you are going through acute withdrawal or suffering a medical condition that requires immediate medical assistance, you will be transported to the nearest hospital. After being stabilized, the Centegra Crisis Program may be able to facilitate the assessment process or you may be asked to return to a police department to begin the process again.

3. If you do not require immediate medical attention, the police representative will drive you to Centegra Hospital - Woodstock. At Centegra Hospital, you will be assessed in preparation for entering treatment.

4.

From Centegra, you will be transported to a participating treatment provider.

5. If you are unable to pay for treatment due to lack of insurance or financial resources, you will not be turned away from participation. A Way Out – McHenry County is able to accept a number of different insurance plans and accommodate those without insurance.

Officer promoted

Lake in the Hills Police Dept. announced last week that Officer M. Mannino was promoted to Sergeant M. Mannino. Sgt. Mannino started as a Police Explorer in 2002 here at LITH as a young man. After attending college, he applied, went through the hiring process and was hired as a police officer. Sgt. Mannino went to the police academy at the Police Training Institute.

Upon graduating the police academy, he returned to the police department to do more training. In the last 11 years, just some of the assignments Sgt. Mannino has held are; patrol officer, detective, police training officer, Officer in Charge and training manager. Sgt. Mannino is also a recipient of the department’s Meritorious Service award during his time as a detective. Please help us in congratulating Sgt. Mannino and welcoming him into his new position.

Health Department reports rabid bat found in Crystal Lake

A rabid bat was found outside a Crystal Lake home on Sept.

11. Test results for the bat, reported to McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) on Friday, Sept. 15, confirmed that the bat was positive for rabies.

No human exposure was reported, although potential exposure to a dog who was outside when the bat was found is being taken into consideration. Keeping pets (even those who stay indoors) up to date with vaccinations will not only keep them from getting rabies but also provide a barrier of protection for people if a rabid animal bites a pet.

If a bat is found, whether it is inside or outside your home, do not touch it directly. The home owner in this instance handled the bat with a shovel and plastic bag, ensuring no direct contact. If a bat is found in the home, contain the bat in a room by closing the door.

If you find a bat outside the home and think there has been exposure to a person or pet, or if the bat is injured, place an upside down bucket over the bat if it is possible. In both cases, immediately call Animal Con-

trol (815-459-6222). In order to test bats for rabies, it is important the bat be in good condition (i.e. head is intact) – either alive or recently deceased.

Only in cases of confirmed exposure are bats submitted for testing.

Specimens in good condition that test negative for rabies eliminates the need for rabies treatment following human exposure. Statewide, 46 rabid bats have been reported positive for rabies so far in 2017, with approximately 43 of those found in northeastern Illinois.

Rabies is a fatal disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system, only confirmed by laboratory testing. The best way to avoid rabies is to avoid exposure.

A bat that is active by day, found in a place where bats are not usually seen (such as in your home or on the lawn) or is unable to fly, is potentially rabid. People should take a “hands off” approach to all wild animals to reduce their risk of exposure. Children should also be educated to avoid handling wild animals. Bats are a protected species and part of the natural habitat.
