McHenry High fundraiser honors Sept. 11 attacks
Nearly $1,000 was raised for the McHenry VFW following a special car wash event Saturday hosted by McHenry High School volleyball and football teams to honor the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Student athletes and their families joined with coaches to wash cars from noon to 4 p.m. for donations to the VFW. The team car wash fundraiser follows McHenry volleyball’s veterans night on Thursday, Sept. 9, when 23 local veterans were honored during the
evening. Veterans were invited to come watch volleyball games for free, and players escorted their special veterans on the court and introduced them to the crowd. Each veteran also signed a wooden flag as a keepsake. Both events come as the nation marks the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. “It was such a special night for our players, the fans and especially the veterans,” Varsity Volleyball Coach Hilary Agnello said.
Fatal crash under investigation On Tuesday, Sept. 14, at approximately 5:40 a.m., the Huntley Police Department responded to a single vehicle traffic crash off the roadway of Charles Sass Parkway, east of the retention pond. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 GMC pickup truck was traveling westbound on Charles Sass Parkway near the curve when it left the roadway, struck a light pole and rolled partially into the shallow retention pond. The sole occupant of the GMC was ejected from the vehicle and found deceased near the water. The driver’s identity was not being released as of press time pending further investigation. This traffic crash is currently under investigation by the Huntley Police Department, with assistance from the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

The Farm Stroll on Sunday, Sept. 26, offers a chance to view 12 working farms such as the cows at Terra Vitae Farms in Woodstock or pigs at All Grass Farms in West Dundee.
Farm Stroll a chance to see working facilities Come out for a day in the country Sunday, Sept. 26, when McHenry County will host its annual Farm Stroll, a self-guided tour of the county’s diversified family farms. A total of 12 farms will be part of this educational agriculture-centric tour. Fruit and vegetable growers, dairy cows, beef cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys,
horses, honey bees, perennial plants and more will be featured within these 12 farms. Because this is a family-friendly, free, self-guided tour, there is no beginning or end of the tour—just choose the farms that interest you and visit during the designated timeframe, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Farm Stroll is organized by the McHenry County Farm
Bureau and the University of Illinois Extension McHenry County Master Gardeners. Extension Master Gardener and 4-H volunteers will be onsite to assist farm families in accommodating guests and conducting demonstrations and tours. There is no charge for the Farm Stroll, but most farms will be selling food, produce or other farm-related products.
Bring cash to purchase items directly from the farmers. Remember, these are working farms: Dress appropriately and supervise children at all times. No pets, please. A few farms will have toilet facilities, but several do not. Visit McHenry County Farm Bureau for more information at
