Environmental Defenders received Stewardship Challenge Grant Sterne’s Fen Nature Preserve in Crystal Lake.

The Environmental Defenders received a Stewardship Challenge Grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation (ICECF).

By fulfilling certain requirements, we can receive up to $27,000 to spend on restoration projects at Sterne’s Fen Nature Preserve in Crystal Lake.

Our amazing volunteers have amassed 400 hours of volunteer time removing invasive species from the Fen, which earned a $4,000 payment

from ICECF. We have also received many generous donations since being awarded the grant. Each donation is being matched 3 to 1 by ICECF.

Tornadoes, windstorms pave way for lasting plant invasions

When tornadoes touch down, we brace for news of property damage, injuries, and loss of life, but the high-speed wind storms wreak environmental havoc, too. They can cut through massive swaths of forest, destroying trees and wildlife habitat, and opening up opportunities for invasive species to gain ground.

A new University of Illinois study, published in the Journal of Ecology, shows that large blowdown areas in southern Illinois forests are more heavily invaded and slower to recover than smaller areas. The research guides management decisions for windstorm-prone forests.

“We used satellite imagery and grueling on-the-ground surveys to look at what was happening with invasive plants after a series of windstorms – a tornado in 2006, a derecho in 2009, and another tornado in 2017 – hit southern Illinois forests,” says Eric Larson, assistant professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at U of I and co-author on the study. “We assume the forest recovers and those invaders get shaded out, but they may not. They could potentially prevent forest recovery or spread into surrounding areas.”

Melissa Daniels, a former graduate student who led the project, adds, “Forest health impacts all of us. Forests provide a lot of important ecosys-

tem services, including biodiversity and carbon sequestration, things that are important for our well-being as a society. We should all care about phenomena that impact our forests.”

Larson and Daniels identified blowdown areas after each of the three storms using Landsat satellite imagery. For each affected area, the team identified a matching forest parcel, similar in tree type, size, elevation, slope, and distance to roads and trails, that had not been impacted by storms.

Then Daniels visited all 62 sites in the summer of 2018 to survey for invasive plants.

“It was hands-down one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done, and I do a lot of difficult things, like ski mountaineering, long backpacking trips, and mountain climbing. Illinois summers are brutal, but they’re even more difficult when you are walking up steep hills, climbing over logs that are half your height, pulling off two dozen ticks a day, and battling stinging nettle and poison ivy,” Daniels says.

“But it’s so beautiful and we were seeing places that most people will never see.”

Once she reached the sites, Daniels identified and measured invasive plant cover and took readings of the tree canopy. It was immediately clear that storm-damaged areas, especially recent ones, were brighter and more open than unaffected sites, offering more light to understory invaders such

as multiflora rose, Japanese honeysuckle, Amur honeysuckle, autumn olive, and Oriental bittersweet.

Comparing the storm-affected areas from 2006, 2009, and 2017, invasive species cover decreased and tree cover increased over time.

“Since invasive plants decreased over time, some might interpret that as the forest healing on its own, and that they don’t need to worry about it. The issue with that is, of our top five invaders, all of them demonstrate the ability to grow under closed canopy conditions. That means that even if they are being shaded out over time, they have the ability to spread into and persist in adjacent forest, potentially affecting forest regeneration,” Daniels says.

Not surprisingly, the storm-damaged areas also were significantly more invaded than unaffected matching parcels, even 12 years after the first tornado hit. And larger damaged parcels were slower to recover, both in terms of decreasing invasions and increasing tree cover. The results suggest a couple of practical management recommendations.

“If you need to preferentially spend money on invasive species management, it makes more sense to focus treatment in larger blowdown areas,” Daniels says. “We also found that the most common invaders in the blowdowns were also the most common invaders in unaffected forest, suggesting the disturbance is just releasing

what’s already present in the system.

Therefore, we recommend land managers focus their treatment on the most abundant invasives in their system.”

Although the research focused on forests in southern Illinois, specifically Shawnee National Forest, Giant City State Park, and Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Daniels and Larson suggest the general patterns – more invasive species and greater persistence in larger canopy gaps – are likely relevant anywhere major windstorms affect forested areas.

26 Northern Illinois communities National Night awarded environmental grants Out Against Crime To support habitats and other open-space projects throughout northern Illinois, ComEd and Openlands today announced grants to 26 public agencies through the annual ComEd Green Region Program. Grantees receive up to $10,000 each to plan, acquire, and improve local parks, natural areas, and recreation resources. Some grants focus on enhancing pollinator habitats and protecting pollinator species, such as butterflies and bees.

“Together with our partners at Openlands, we are proud to support organizations that are making meaningful differences to restore and enhance natural habitats and biodiversity,” said Melissa Washington, Vice President of Governmental and External Affairs at ComEd. “It’s the perfect balance of meeting our future energy needs and powering a brighter and more sustainable future for our customers and the communities we serve.”

Since the inception of the Green Region Program in 2013, ComEd has awarded more than $1.3 million to municipalities across northern Illinois to help fund their openspace projects. ComEd provides the funding, and Openlands, one of the oldest metropolitan conservation organizations in the nation, administers the grants to local communities.

“The ComEd Green Region Program is an important commitment to sustainability across northern Illinois and a commitment to providing residents with access to natural open spaces,” said Jerry Adelmann, President and CEO of Openlands. “Over the last seven years, we’ve seen how the Green Region Program has helped communities enhance many parks and trails for learning, enjoyment, and supporting wildlife, and the support from ComEd has been vital.

We extend our gratitude to ComEd, and we want to thank the many partners who have implemented these projects across the region.”

Due to a recent decline in pollinators throughout northern Illinois, and strong interest in pollinator conservation, the 2019 Green Region projects again focus on advancing and protecting the region’s essential pollinator species. Earlier this year, public agencies from across communities that ComEd serves submitted grant applications, which were then reviewed by an advisory committee composed of county government officials and members of the region’s conservation community.

26 ComEd Green Region Program 2019 grant recipients -Woods Creek Headwaters Pollinator Project (Village of Algonquin): This project will improve the ecological health of six acres of sedge meadow wetlands for the benefit of native pollinator species.

It includes invasive phragmites removal, native sedge meadow interseeding, and public education.

-Restoration along the Fox River in Downtown Aurora (City of Aurora): This project will restore native flora along the Fox River, to create a buffer between the river and adjacent impervious pavements, especially public parking lots. The restored site will intercept surface runoff, thereby reducing pollutants flowing into the river, and provide a habitat for native species of birds and insect pollinators.

-Lily Cache Beneficial Insect and Pollinator Habitat Restoration Project (Bolingbrook Park District): This project involves the development of six pods, ranging in size from one-quarter to two acres, to provide essential habitat for the life cycle completion of native beneficial insects and pollinators.

-Pollinator Habitat Establishment at Sewell Conservation Area (Boone County Conservation District): This project will establish 17 acres of new habitat to benefit both pollinators and conservation area visitors for years to come. This agricultural conversion is part of a 200-acre conservation area that will become a high-quality wetland within the Kishwaukee River watershed in northern Illinois.

-Glenbriar Park Phase II (Butterfield Park District): This project will complete the second and final phase of a park project entitled Glenbriar Park Expansion. This land has already been acquired and prepared for development, and the grant will support installation of a shelter, looped walking trails, and a pollinator garden.

-Increasing Plant Biodiversity to Support Pollinators at West Pullman Park Natural Area (Chicago Park District): This project will improve the West Pullman Park Natural Area for people and wildlife through the installation of native woody and herbaceous plants to increase biodiversity and provide an abundance of food sources for pollinators. Interpretive signage will also be installed to explain the impacts of the improved habitat conditions.

Recovered stolen vehicle in Marengo On July 23 at approximately 2:55 a.m., the Marengo Police Dept. attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding.

The vehicle failed to yield to the officer, ran a red light, Maxwell Johnson and caused a collision with another vehicle at Grant Hwy (US Route 20) and S. State St. (IL Route 23).

The subject vehicle came to rest against a building, causing minor damage to the building. All parties of the crash were evaluated for minor injuries and no one was transported to the hospital. It was determined through our investigation that the speeding vehicle had recently been stolen. The driver of that vehicle was identified as Maxwell E. Johnson, 40 years old, of 112 Willow Road,

Willow Springs, Ill. Mr. Johnson was charged with the following charges: Possession of a Stolen Vehicle – Class 2 Felony Aggravated Fleeing to Elude – Class 4 Felony Reckless Driving – Class A Misdemeanor Speeding 26-34 Over – Class B Misdemeanor No Valid Driver’s License – Class B Misdemeanor Citations for Disregarding Traffic Control Device and Operating Uninsured Vehicle Mr. Johnson was transported to McHenry County Jail. The charges against Mr. Johnson are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a Court of Law. McHenry County Sheriff’s Dept., Marengo Fire Protection District, and Marengo Rescue Squad District assisted with this incident.

Detention Area Plantings (Downers Grove Park District): This project involves taking two currently mowed detention basins and converting them to native vegetation. It includes initial herbicide applications and the installation of native seed, native plugs, and interpretive signage. The project eliminates mowing, and provides enhanced habitat, improved water quality, educational opportunities, and the opportunity for passive park uses.

-Fox Valley Park District Pollinator Recovery Project (Fox Valley Park District): This project will expand pollinator habitat and food sources, while increasing regional native vegetation presence. The Stuart Sports Complex portion of the project will connect existing prairie by converting nearly 20 acres of turf grass into native wildflower-enriched prairie, which is crucial to the survival of pollinators.

-Canoe Launch Access Road and Trail Improvements (City of Genoa): This project will provide a paved trail that connects Citizens Park to additional nature trails, native prairies, wetlands, and the DeKalb County Forest Preserve. The paved access road will also provide a better road surface for vehicles and pedestrians when accessing the canoe launch and adjacent amenities in Citizens Park.

-Pollinators for Park Pointe (City of Harvard): This project will restore a portion of one of the city’s parks to a natural and native pollinator park.

This project is beneficial in helping to promote an educational outdoor experience for the community as a whole.

-Healthy Hedges to Replace Buckthorn - Old Barrington Road (Village of Lake Barrington): This project will demonstrate an alternative to buckthorn and encourage residents to do the same on their private property. Buckthorn is linked to declining populations of songbirds and the disappearance of native ecosystems. Removing and replacing buckthorn with native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowers provides habitat to support wildlife.

Restoration and Transformation: -The Making of a Local Arboretum from a Forgotten Park (Village of Lake Zurich): This project will direct resources into nearly eight acres of vastly underutilized village park to rebrand the space as a conservation arboretum, with a focus on oak preservation,

McHenry County Conservation District, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, and the City of McHenry Police Department team up to present National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime, Tuesday, August 6, from 5 -8 p.m. at Petersen Park, 4300 Peterson Park Road, McHenry, to promote crime prevention and safety programs, while strengthening police-community partnerships and encouraging neighborhood camaraderie. An action-packed evening is planned with food and fun for the whole family.

Stop by for complimentary food and beverages and enjoy the free ongoing activities. Various police equipment will be on display. Play a few midway style games including a climbing wall.

Booths include: Electronic Fingerprinting ID System for Children, Project S.W.E.E.P., Sheriff’s Office Explorer, Volunteer and other programs.

National Night Out (NNO) is celebrated annually the first Tuesday of August. The goal of NNO is to promote crime prevention and safety programs, strengthen police-community partnerships, and encourage neighborhood camaraderie in hopes for a safer McHenry County and America. NNO “America’s Night Against Crime” began in 1984 and is celebrated in all 50 states.

BraveHearts’ weekly Warrior Wednesday BraveHearts would like to highlight a veteran for our weekly Warrior Wednesday. Marshall Wolfe, a Marine Corps Veteran, has participated in BraveHearts services since 2015.

He became a PATH International Certified Instructor in 2017, and is the newest member of the BraveHearts full-time team assuming the role of Peer-to-Peer Specialist.

Marshall enjoys teaching various

level riders, instructing various groups from the VA’s, and being active on our drill team. He is now working even closer with our veterans providing community outreach, peer-to-peer support, and horsemanship mentoring in his new role and spending time with his project mustang Batman. Huge Illinois corn maze celebrates 50th anniversary of moon landing

Early this year, when the Richardson family sat down to brainstorm the theme for their 19th gigantic corn maze, it was a challenge. Nevertheless, one option rose to the top: the 50th Anniversary of the first person on the moon.

Way back on July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 Saturn rocket “Columbia” transported the Lunar Module “Eagle” to the moon, where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first earthlings to set foot on the surface and coin the famous phrase “One small step for man and one giant step for mankind”.

At Richardson Adventure Farm in McHenry County, the corn is thriving, and soon the family will cut, rototill and tamp the 11 miles of trails and paths depicting two astronauts, the Columbia, the Eagle, an American flag, Earth, stars, and the words

“Apollo 50”, “Richardson Farm” and “Next Giant Leap”. (There’s even a little green man peeking out of a crater.)

Located just an hour’s drive northwest of Chicago, Richardson Adventure Farm has been in the family since 1840, and they planted their first corn maze in 2001. Over the years, it has become an annual destination for family fun, with a new 28-acre maze every year, plus more than 30 activities, including wagon rides, pig races, a vintage carousel, and a “park train” that runs on real tracks. Most of the activities are included in the admission fee. Only a few, such as the zip line and “Zorb” rides, cost extra. Private picnic sites with tables, campfires and firewood are available by reservation, and there’s plenty of free parking.

Each year, the Richardsons add something new to the farm. This year,

it’s all about comfort, beverages, and music. “We built a heated pavilion near the huge restroom complex,” said Wendy Richardson. “It’s got a great view of the jumping pillows, giant slide, Extreme Air, Zorbing, and the park train.” They also added a heated tent near the pig races and train depot, serving wine, beer, and hot chocolate with schnapps, plus live music on most weekend afternoons.

September admission is $17 for ages 13 and up, and $14 for ages 4-12.

October/November weekend prices are $19 for ages 13 and up and $16 for ages 3-12. Free for ages two and under. Group rates available.

invasive species, and the importance of pollinators. The Village plans to work with community volunteers and non-profit organizations to rehabilitate an abandoned walking trail and remove invasive buckthorn and huckleberry. Pollinator vegetation, picnic tables, benches, and three interpretive-learning kiosk stations with individual play-pocket areas will be installed as part of the project. The Village will also install a new entry sign for Kuechmann Arboretum.

-Northwest Illinois Aerial Combat Memorial (Village of Lena): This project will support improvements to a local military memorial park, including the addition of an F-4 Phantom jet on a pylon as the park’s centerpiece. Other improvements will include brick walkways, trees, grass, bushes, benches, a flagpole, didactic placards, light standards, and a threefoot brick wall along the back.

-Hastings Butterfly Path (Village of Lindenhurst): This project will enable public access to Lake County Forest Preserve District’s Hastings Lake preserves via a connective trail to be bordered by native plants. This pathway will benefit both the community and pollinators by extending the forest preserve’s green corridor.

-Pollinator Habitat Garden at Terrace View Park (Lombard Park District): This project will transform an area of Terrace View Park into a pollinator habitat to educate visitors on the significance of Illinois native plants and the pollinators that inhabit them. Improvements include native plantings, an educational kiosk, and signage to empower visitors to partake in the conservation mission and vision.

-Rock River Parks and Open Space Plan (Village of Machesney Park): This project will create a parks and open space plan for 63 acres along the Rock River in Machesney Park.

-Kelly Park Accessible (ADA) Improvements (Village of Orland Hills): This project will provide access from the Kelly Park Walking Pathway to two new asphalt sectional pathways, which continue to two paved gazebos/picnic shelters. Under each paved gazebo, new ADA accessible picnic tables will be installed. The Kelly Park Accessible Improvements are designed to increase accessibility for all patrons to enjoy the park areas.

-Ashcroft Lake Native Shoreline Restoration (Oswegoland Park District): This project will restore the exposed mud flats of a lowered lake water table, per village requirements.

It will also re-establish emergent, water-level, and upland areas around the lake with native plugs and seed.

-Village of Palos Park Pollinator Garden Project (Village of Palos Park): This project will convert part of Centennial Park into a pollinator garden, with emphasis on native plants that provide food and habitat for pollinators. An informational kiosk, benches, and water features will inform visitors of the garden’s ecological importance and create a relaxing ambiance.

-Maine Park Pollinator Garden (Park Ridge Park District): This project will revitalize the main entrance to Maine Park Leisure Center and Preschool. Improvements include the installation of a pollinator garden with two educational signs
