USO Barbeque for the Troops

They picked the hottest day of the year for this event. About 100 car dealers across Illinois are grilling burgers, brats and hot dogs on Saturday, July 18, for donations to the USO. Chicagoland auto dealers have raised over $125,000 for the United Service Organization in the past 2 years. These funds are given to local troops and their families. They directly support troops that are deployed and those that are at home. They assist military families, injured, wounded or ill military personnel and the families of the fallen.

The Crystal Lake Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram dealership at 5904 South Route 31, Crystal lake, IL, 60014 is participating for the first time this year. The USO logo is prominently displayed on their buildings. A brown banner announcing the BBQ is posted by the road. A tent canopy shelters Fran Rosenberg as she handles the grill very capably. Condiments, creamy cole slaw and delicious potato salad or placed on a table nearby.

Everything is very tasty. People are gathering and tunes are being played out of the back of a nearby vehicle to keep the party rocking.

Some dealerships may only be doing this event today but if you keep an eye out for the signs, it is being run throughout the month of July. It all benefits the men and women who are laying their lives on the line for

Family Health Festival

The Centegra Family Health Festival was such a popular event last year that this year visitors need to park down the street at the Monroe Middle School and take a bus to the Festival .

This year the Health Festival is celebrating the construction of Centegra Hospital – Huntley. Once the bus has delivered a full load of passengers to the festivities, the festival provides a carry bag to hold all the fun stuff being given away.

are being fitted onto children. A proper fit of the helmet offers the most safety.

Once the helmets are tucked away in the carry bag, families might visit the Teddy Bear Clinic. I notice blood pressure cuffs in use alongside the Band-Aids. Tiny teddy bears and paper doctor and nurse hats are being handed out at this tent.

Josh Nilsson of Spin N Play DJs is keeping the music flowing today. He encourages the children who are playing games and climbing the rock wall. A balloon artist is nearby and more than one canopy tent is handing out cold bottles of

water. Condensation occurs very quickly on these bottles due to the heat on Saturday, June 18.

The festival is offering a Touch-A-Truck area.

Construction equipment, a waste management truck, fire engine and police car are parked here.

Children are thrilled to be able to climb into them and check out these vehicles that they normally have to watch from a distance. The DJ is the first to spot the Flight for Life helicopter coming in for a landing.

Fraternite of Notre Dame zoning appeal declined

Although the majority of McHenry County Zoning Board of Appeals voted in favor of the Fraternite of Notre Dame’s petition and request, the project for expansion was not greenlit. The final vote was 4-3 in favor of approval, but their request requires supermajority, or at least 5 ‘yes’ votes to proceed at this moment. That does not mean that the Fraternite cannot proceed. The next vote, done by the County Board itself, can be approved with a simple majority on the conditional use portion of the request. That vote will not take place until mid-September. Following that vote, the Fraternite must also receive a supermajority vote to approve all the variations nec-

essary for the proposed expansion.

The Fraternite, locally positioned at 10002 Harmony Hills Road in Marengo, has been a point of conflict for neighbors since they first received approval to build on the site in 2005. Coral Township is adamantly opposed to further expansion, with over 800 community members signing a petition against their requests over the last several months. This hot-button issue has received the bulk of its opposition due to their neighborly behavior, or rather lack thereof.

Numerous residents have cited at each of the public forums on the issue that the Fraternite have been loud or disruptive with construction efforts in the past. Their latest request, which includes expansion and development of a winery and brewery, private

school with on-site boarding, and commercial kitchen, poses additional construction concerns. Many of the uses the Fraternite was original approved for 10 years ago have not yet been put in place. All of their on-site buildings are restricted to practicing members and not open to the public, either.

Whether or not the Fraternite, which identifies as a part of the Catholic community, is providing an important service has never been disputed. The organization operates out of a home base in the city of Chicago. However, the rural location, exclusivity, and lack of taxes generating revenue for the township are the big sticking points. No further progress, whether moving toward absolute approval or denial, can be made until September’s vote takes place.

Elevated bacteria closes area beaches

Between unseasonably cool weather and high levels of bacteria, the number of beach day opportunities this year have been limited.

The McHenry County Health Department has been keeping a close eye on the water and bacteria within it due largely in part to the heavy rain. The water at each of the 12 lakes licensed in the county are being sample on a bi-weekly basis. With the heavy rainfall, additional sampling has been necessary. As of Thurs July 23, several area beaches remained closed to the public due to elevated bacteria levels.

Carr’s Annual Country Car Show popular with collectors MARENGO — This car show is in somebody’s back yard, rather than in a parking lot. It’s off the beaten path.

For some, getting there means traveling down more than one mile of roadway with a “loose gravel” surface.

And on this particular day part of the access route, Garden Prairie Road, was closed.

Despite all that, “wouldn’t miss it” was the predominant answer to the question of what they thought about Carr’s Annual Country Car Show.

Some 80 cars and trucks, quite a few of them dating to the 1920s and 1930s, made the trek to Norm and Sharon Cook’s home Sunday afternoon for the seventh annual event.

There’s actually plenty of room, as the Cooks have a 10-acre parcel. They also have a large barn with all kinds of automobile memorabilia inside.

And in a small corral between the barn and their home sits a 1950 Oldsmobile that won more than 15 trophies over the years.

They’ve been at that location - in Garden Prairie but with a Marengo mailing address - for 33 years, Norm Carr said. The idea for a car

show came about because “I’m a car nut,” he said.

Cars and trucks mostly came from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. At least two of the entries were driven by their owners.

Driving from Hampshire Rudy and Penny Stynoski and his wife drove from Hampshire in their his and hers Model T Fords - his a 1919 Touring model and hers a 1924 Coupe.

“I was around Model Ts for the first 15 years of my life,” Rudy Stynoski said. His father, John, was the founder and first president of the Model T Ford Club International in 1952.

After a lengthy break because of business and family obligations, Rudy said he “got back into it when I retired three years ago. Since there are no trailers, the Stynowskis do their best to stick to the back roads while they’re driving to shows in this area.

“They don’t go very fast,” he said.

Penny Stynoski said she enjoys seeing children check out their cars. “It’s like a history lesson for the kids who come through with their parents,” she said.

Five additional beaches were also placed on a temporary advisory earlier in the week.

There are a total of 38 licensed beaches in McHenry County. Tuesday’s closures included eight Wonder Lake beaches and one in Lake in the Hills. The beaches with an advisory status were also in Wonder Lake as well as Crystal Lake, Island Lake, and McHenry. With more rainfall expected this weekend, it is likely additional testing will take place next week to ensure the safety of the water.

The McHenry County Department of Health will post closure information at each affected beach as well as online. They report the results online as well. All information can be found online 24 hours a day at www.mcdh.info.

The line to see the Flight for Life helicopter begins forming before it completes its landing. With everyone starting to crowd around it, its crew needs to organize them, “Form a single file line, please.” Is repeated, but the crowd cooperates swiftly. Everyone wants a chance to climb into the helicopter and check it out. The stilt walker gets to the helicopter first. He reaches up to touch the blade. Then he takes a feather duster and pretends to

start dusting the cockpit.

Someone put a lot of thought and planning into making this event a success. The Festival runs smoothly with plenty of people attending each area.

Lots of community involvement is apparent from all of the vehicles parked in the TouchA-Truck section. From parking to busing to activities, adults and children all seem to be having a good time.

ince the dawn of time, people have had opinions on everything from politics to the best way to make fire to whether a club or spear is better for hunting the wooly mammoth.

Mostly politics.

While people have always had opinions, they weren’t inclined to share them with just anyone or everyone.

Uncle Jim and Grandma Betty may have wrestled (loudly) with various issues over Sunday dinner, but in general people reserved their opinions for friends and family.

A person wouldn’t shout their political inclinations from a rooftop or take out a billboard proclaiming viewpoints differing from theirs were dumber than a wooly mammoth and embraced only by idiots.

Going public with negativity like that would be out of line. It wouldn’t be prudent.

ple continue to form opinions, they aren’t afraid to share.

But not face to face over Sunday dinner. That sort of thing is nearly extinct. People who might not get in your face with their political (or other) rants in person are more than glad to do so online.

Social media. I love it. It’s a great way to stay in touch and know who’s on vacation when and where. But it’s also become a place to share one’s opinion on parenting, prayer, politics, health care, the Kardashians, the economy and terrorists. Most especially the Kardashians. And politics.

Some things never change.

If you read a through a thread

or two, you’ll note hardly anyone articulates middle of the road, milk toast opinions.

Most people express strong thoughts for or against whatever it is they’re taking issue with, and they don’t hesitate to voice them – as long as it can be done from behind the screen of a smartphone, tablet or computer.

I’ve witnessed more thrashing, trashing and bashing in the last year than probably the rest of my cumulative life, and I was born before the Internet was invented, so that’s a long time.

Spouting one’s opinions while name-calling and indulging in a profanity or two is no longer seen as out of line or rash. It’s run of the mill and it’s caused me to form an opinion of my own.

The Internet is making us mean.

I’m not alone in my thinking. *One research study found that social network use momentarily enhances self-

esteem (“I got 64 likes in half an hour! I’m trending!”), which reduces self-control, making us more likely to lash out strongly toward people who don’t share our opinions.

One of the researchers said this reduction in selfcontrol is similar to behavior displayed by people who are inebriated. Imagine the result if someone who was actually tipsy decided to explore social media. The lashing out effect could be multiplied.

It’s a good thing no one goes on Facebook after drinking a couple cocktails.

What’s the takeaway? All those Facebook Likes are making us act drunk and mean, not to mention faceless, which is ironic. (But that’s just my opinion.)

We all possess ideas, perspectives, beliefs, viewpoints and opinions. That won’t change. And it’s safe and logical to say we all believe our opinion to be the astute, intelligent and correct one. That’s

okay.

Disrespecting others is not.

It has, however, become the norm – or at the very least commonplace.

Call me naïve or behind the times or even a wooly mammoth, but that makes me sad. Because in addition to opinions, we all have feelings. And words – whether spoken or on a screen – can hurt. If you were here, I’d tell you that to your face and we could talk about it, the oldfashioned way, maybe even over Sunday dinner.

“been there, been there, been there.” I’ve just stopped on West Virginia because I’m not sure if my summer vacations (or any other travel) has plopped me there.

Since I know we road tripped when I was a kid and toured Monticello in Virginia, I will guess that we drove through West Virginia. And now my geography lack kicks in. The East states make me pause and have to enlarge the map.

I’ve been to Washington DC so I will say yes to Maryland. I don’t think I’ve been to Delaware or Rhode Island or Connecticut. That’s it. Another long scan and check, check, double check of the whole great nation. Been there, been there, been there.

I hadn’t been to Maine until a month ago and just crossed the border to see one tiny town, but I crossed state line.

Maine is now a yes. Several of the states are like that. I am not sure what I’ve seen of Pennsylvania except the drive from the Philadelphia airport into New Jersey. So even though I’ve been to most states, I have not seen all they have to offer.

Let me re-check. Four states

eography is not my best subject. We had to learn the state capitals in social studies. I don’t remember them or why it mattered. I do love traveling though even if I don’t know Augusta is the capital of Maine.

The two “easy” states to name that I’ve been to are Alaska and Hawaii. And the main coastal spots, California, New York and Florida. I can rattle off midwest states because they are my neighbors that I’ve traveled to many times. As an Illinois dweller, I’ve been to Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota and I could keep going.

You often hear people mention they’ve been to all 50 states. I’m getting pretty close but I have to look at a map to determine where I’ve been and what’s left to check off.

Excuse me while I go take a peek at Google maps.

Instead of naming where I’ve been, I can list where I have not. Starting from the left, or as some would say, the West, I don’t think I’ve been to Oregon. I hear Portland is cool. It’s on my list.

Summer in the Park is Back

Woodstock has been keeping its parks active with its 2nd Annual Summer in the Park this year. Events kicked off on Wednesday, July 15, with the historic Woodstock Square’s weekly City Band Concert in the Park. The music is accompanied by a free Ice Cream Social and a Carnival Booth featuring Kids’ Games and Prizes.

On Thursday evening, events moved over to Emricson Park for a free movie under the Big Top tent. The featured movie, Night at the Museum – Secret of the Tomb (#3 in the trilogy) is preceded by entertainment by R. C. Juggles. Free candy and popcorn enhance the fun.

Music lovers come to Emricson Park on Friday for Blackwater Gold, Creedence Revival and Catfight. These three bands rock the party all evening. A beer garden and a food court satisfy the inner adult while the children are amply entertained with a Petting Zoo, Rescue Pets and a Rock Climbing Wall. A Bags Tournament with a championship trophy brings out our competitive instincts.

The Woodstock Waterworks in Emricson Park opens early on Saturday for a splashing good time. The Gavers Barndance anchors the evening with a dinner/auction, raffles and another trio of bands: Jimmy Nick & Don’t Tell Mama; Dick Diamond & the Dusters; and Hans & the Hormones.

Both the Woodstock Square Park and Emricson Park are busy on Sunday. The Historic Park hold the Woodstock Folk Festival with a steady lineup

of musicians and a park filled with people enjoying the tunes.

At Emricson Park, the Big Top is filled once again. A series of different bounce houses separates the Food Court from display booths. Booths include the Woodstock Garden Club.

Carnival games and a Kid’s Stage keep children entertained while the adults enjoy Bingo. They can enjoy a free photo booth between dances and purchase pizza when they get hungry.

Remembering World War II combat pilot on his 96th birthday

ROCKFORD — Fred Ohr has a lot of memories from a life that now is in its 96th year.

One of them, he said, is the birthday party thrown for him July 15 at the Peterson Meadows retirement home, where he has lived for the past five years.

His comrades at arms at the KWVA (Korean War Veterans Association), Chapter 272, helped put the celebration together. Chapter member Arnie Cabello of Machesney Park said there was a band, featuring Ohr’s son-in-law on the piano, along with a bass and drums.

ment, surrounded by memories including a large, helium-filled balloon shaped as a 96 that is still flying.

Here is his story - about his days as a combat pilot during World War II. He was a major in the U.S. Army when he retired in 1945.

His goal always was to be a combat pilot and he said he made it, overcoming a few hurdles along the way.

His family emigrated from Korea at the turn of the 20th century and settled in Idaho, by way of Alaska, where his father worked in a fish cannery.

Once he saw an airplane carrying mail to Boise and announced to his mother that he wanted to

do that. “She said if I kept at it, I would get there,” he recalled.

And so he did, though it took a while.

When he couldn’t get information about the Army’s pilot program, he joined up fresh out of high school as part of the cavalry. His first job: working in the horse stables. “I did not care for shoveling that stuff,” he said.

Having achieved the rank of sergeant, his next stop was the artillery. “One day the military came along, recruiting pilots,” he said. “I didn’t go (initially); being the only Oriental, I didn’t know how they would take it.”

But he eventually did attend, encouraged by someone who worked for him, who didn’t want to go alone.

“He was being interviewed when someone called out, ‘Sergeant.’ Then he called again. An officer - he was a colonel - came over to me and said, ‘Next.’ I was scared so I asked, ‘Next for what?’ He told a captain they were going to make a pilot out of me.”

And so it began. Sgt. Ohr replaced a second lieutenant who had flunked out of training school.

His vast interest in aviation also included mechanics and that delayed him from getting into a cockpit. “I would watch them work on planes and so they thought I wanted to be a mechanic,” he explained. “So I went to school for that, even though I didn’t want to.”

Next stop: Africa After finishing school, Ohr got orders to go overseas - to Africa - as a mechanic. He said he encountered more difficulties there when his boss “wouldn’t let me do anything except carry gas cans.”

As it turned out German troops breaking through Allied lines and forcing them to retreat was helpful to him. While heading to a different part of the desert, his boss “gave me a plane that had been crippled the night.” And when they both arrived at the new location, “he was surprised to see me. Then he took off and I never saw him again.”

business” and back to what he loved doing - flying. He was sent to Europe in 1943, where the Spring Offensive was in the works.

“I flew lots of missions and got credit for six kills,” he said.

“There were 10 of us and we’d also shoot up up German airfields. I liked to do that.”

Ohr had achieved the rank of major when he was discharged early in 1945, shortly before the end of the war.

He said he went to school and became a dentist, with a prac-

tice in Chicago that spanned 62 years. He retired in 2008 and settled in Rockford, to be closer to two daughters.

While airplanes always will be on his mind, he has no desire to climb back into the cockpit.

“I’ve got a friend out there with a plane who wants me to fly it,” Ohr said. But the answer is a firm, ‘No.” He explained it this way: “You can do it too much and for too long. Eventually, you might kill yourself. I had a lot of close ones when I was in combat.”

Continued from page 2 GSX to the show. “I wanted a car and bought it, it’s about as simple as that,” he said. The acquisition occurred in 2002 and he’s been bringing it to the Carrs’ show for the past four years.

Some of the cars had interesting histories.

The 1933 Ford pickup truck owned by Ray Snyder of Rockford was taken apart in 1960. It remained in disarray until 2002, when the reassembling process began. It was back together again in 2004 and has been on the road, to 154 shows

since then.

Rick and Georgia Berens purchased their 1957 Chevrolet Nomad station wagon in 1969, for $25, when it was “junk.” It has since been restored and is driven daily.

The sad side of that story is the cruising these days is done alone, in memory of his late wife, who also was his best friend.

This car won the Best of GM award at the show.
