Miss McHenry County to be crowned

The 2018 McHenry County Fair queen and Princesses will be crowned at the culmination of the Pageant on Tuesday, July 31, opening day of the Fair in the grandstands. The Pageant will begin at 6 p.m., and admission is free.

The Miss McHenry County Pageant has been a tradition at the McHenry County Fair for over 60 years. Our pageant provides a scholarship to the Miss McHenry County winner to help her pursue her educational hopes and dreams. Added in 2016, Miss McHenry County Pageants now also include a Jr. Teen (Ages 9-12) and Teen (Ages 13-16) Competitive Division as well as a

Princess Mentoring Program (Ages 5-9).

The McHenry County Fair Princess Mentoring Program is a noncompete program. This program is designed to provide young girls ages 5 – 9 years old an opportunity to grow in confidence and have a good time. Each Princess will be crowned on stage and have a ton of fun!

The Jr and Teen contestants will compete in the areas of Interview, Speech, Formal Wear and On-Stage Question. Miss McHenry County contestants will compete in the areas of Interview, Swimsuit, Speech, Formal Wear and On-Stage Question.

Conservation District to host ‘Great Outdoors Beer Trail’ Embrace your appreciation of the outdoors and McHenry County’s wide open spaces at the 2nd annual special event, The Great Outdoors Beer Trail, Saturday, Aug. 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Fel-Pro RRR Conservation Area, 1520 Crystal Lake Road, in Cary.

Historical Society to offer quilt appraisals

Sandy Schweitzer, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. in the research library of the museum, 6422 Main St., Union.

A donation of $30 to the historical society is requested for each 15-minute verbal appraisal. There are 12 slots available on a first come, first served basis. Pre-payment by check or credit card is required, with all proceeds benefiting the society. Call 815-923-2267 to reserve your spot.

Schweitzer is a highly regarded quilt artist and teacher, as well as American Quilt Society certified appraiser. Her presentations, which are open to the public, are informative and entertaining. Sheriff’s office investigates double fatal crash A 48-year-old Harvard man and an 18-year-old man were both killed Friday in a two-vehicle crash in the early morning hours in the 2000 block of North Route 23 in unincorporated Dunham Township.

Friday at 2:29 a.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Harvard Fire Protection District responded to the crash involving a 2003 Toyota Prius and a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia.

Preliminary investigation indi-

cates that the Toyota, driven by the 48-year-old man, was traveling northbound on North Route 23, while the Freightliner, driven by a 57-yearold Cross Plaines, Wis. woman, was traveling southbound. For unknown reasons, the Toyota crossed the center line of North Route 23 and struck the Freightliner head-on.

The driver and passenger of the Toyota were both pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the Toyota. The driver

and sole occupant of the Freightliner did not sustain any injuries. All occupants were wearing seat belts and airbags deployed in the Toyota. That area of North Route 23 was closed for approximately seven hours. Dunham Township assisted with the road closure.

The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroners’ Office.

Sheriff’s office investigates boat/swimmer accident A 6-year-old Cary boy sustained serious injuries after being struck by a boat in shallow water on the Fox River in unincorporated Fox River Grove Sunday afternoon.

At 4:45 p.m., members of the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District, Fox River Grove Police Department, and Flight for Life along with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to Picnic Grove Park, located at 598 Birch Lane, for a boat/

swimmer accident.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 19-year-old Algonquin man was piloting an 18-foot Bayliner towards the beach to dock. The 6-yearold was swimming at the beach and dove under the water. Due to the murky water, the 19-year-old was unable to see the boy and drove the boat over him. The child was next seen floating unconscious next to the boat and was pulled from the water.

Once on the beach, life-saving measures were undertaken by bystanders.

The juvenile was transported by Flight for Life to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with life-threatening injuries. Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in this accident.

The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.

Tagging and Tracking the Monarch’s Great Migration Sunday, Aug. 26 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake. It is almost time for the majestic monarch butterflies to begin their mass migrations south. A brief overview of monarchs, their life-cycle, migration patterns, and programs that track their migrations will be presented.

Afterward we will hike the trails through the summer prairie in search of monarchs and their larvae. If available, we will tag a live monarch butterfly and provide instruction on how to do this at home. Monarch tag ordering information will also be available.

An Evening of Native American Flute Friday, Aug. 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Prairieview Education Center,

Join the Conservation District and members of the Woodland Spirit Flute Circle for an evening of Native American flute music; both live and recorded.

Hear Native American legends of the origins of the flute. Learn about their design and what makes them unique from other styles of flute. If you are a flute player, please feel free to bring your own and share your music.

McHenry ICU nurses save a man’s life in Las Vegas

I want to share a story about the heroic actions two nurses from the Intensive Care Unit at Centegra HospitalMcHenry took. Alexis Wisniewski, RN III, and Katie Young, RN II, attended a wedding in Las Vegas in April.

While in the MGM hotel food court, our two nurses noticed a man in line collapse to the ground. They ran to the scene in their high heels and dresses and found an older man with labored breathing who was unresponsive.

The two, remembering their Centegra core value of passionately caring, immediately sprang into action. Alexis determined the man did not have a pulse and started chest compressions

while Katie began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Alexis and Katie continued CPR as another patron obtained an AED. Once connected, the device indicated a shockable rhythm was found.

The patient was defibrillated and began to regain consciousness.

Our two nurses stayed with the patient until the paramedics arrived. The paramedics reported that the EKG showed ST elevation (this indicates a heart attack), and he was transported to the local hospital.

The hotel graciously rewarded Wisniewski and Young by covering their resort fees and providing a generous food and drink voucher. Although the two of them told me that using their skills to save the man’s life was reward enough!

Community invited to National Night Out

Lake in the Hills Police invite the community to National Night Out festivities 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Safety Education Center, 1109 Crystal Lake Road, Lake in the Hills.

This event was nationally founded in 1984, and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada. The purpose of this event is to increase an awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts. It is also meant to help bring the community together to show criminals that as a community, we stand together against crime.

McHenry County to host National Night Out McHenry County Conservation District, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, City of McHenry Police Department and the Fire Protection Districts of McHenry & Wonder Lake team up to present National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime, Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Park, 4300 Peterson Park Road, McHenry, to promote crime prevention and safety programs, while strengthening policecommunity partnerships and encouraging neighborhood camaraderie.

There are no guarantees in bull riding; the only way for cowboys to earn a paycheck is to ride better than the rest of the 40-man field.

The field of competition begins with all attempting to ride one bull in the “long round.” The top eight ride scores will advance to the championship round where they will battle for the prize money and trophy buckle.

In addition to lucrative prize money, bull riders accumulate points, which qualify them for the Midwest Swing Finals to be held on Sept. 15.

At the end of the Midwest Swing, the bull rider who has the most points will be crowned the Series Champion and receive a check, Custom trophy saddle and buckle.

Centegra offers tips for safe grilling

Outdoor barbecues are a great way to spend time with family and friends.

However, it’s important to know that grilling improperly can actually expose your food — and whoever eats it — to cancer-causing agents.

About Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) One of these cancer-causing agents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAH, forms when fat drips from meat as you grill, then flares up, producing smoke that coats the food. There are two ways you can reduce or stop PAHs from forming: Decrease the amount of smoke produced by choosing lean cuts of meat, poultry and fish. Avoid using a fork to puncture the cuts and wrap them in foil.

Marinate meats, as studies show this may decrease carcinogens by up to 90 percent. A marinade works best at reducing PAH when it contains an acid ingredient such as lemon juice or vinegar.

Marinades add flavor to whatever you are grilling.

About Heterocyclic Amines (HCA) When meats, poultry and fish are grilled at extremely high temperatures, Heterocyclic amines, or HCAs, can form. To reduce the presence of this carcinogen: Cook at a lower temperature and increase the distance between the heat source and the meat.

Limit the portions of well-done meats that you eat and avoid charred meats altogether.

Precook meats in the microwave prior to grilling for several minutes. This can remove up to 95 percent of HCAs, according to researchers from the University of California-Davis.

Flip hamburgers often. The same University of California-Davis scientists found that if you flip hamburger patties every minute, it can reduce HCA formation by up to 100 percent.

More tips for healthy grilling Grill vegetables and fruits instead of meats, since they do not produce PAH or HCA when grilled. Some that work well on the grill include zucchini, yellow squash, butternut squash, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, potatoes, eggplant and corn.

Choose lean meats, such as “loin” cuts of beef and pork (sirloin, tenderloin), skinless poultry, fish and tofu to reduce PAH and HCA. Grill healthy — yet don’t undercook either Finally, a word of caution: even though you want to avoid overcooking meats, be sure you don’t undercook them. If they aren’t cooked completely, you put yourself and others at risk for an illness-causing bacteria, such as E. coli.

Use a meat thermometer to determine when meats, poultry and fish are properly cooked. Poultry should reach an internal temperature of 165° to 180° F, ground beef, pork and lamb should be between 160° and 170°, and beef steaks and roasts should be in the 145° to 160° range.
