Always something to do in Union By Anne Eickstadt EDITOR
The weekend of July 13 and 14 was blistering hot but it didn’t slow down the hordes of people who came to enjoy everything that was happening in Union, Ill. On Friday, the village wide, weekend-long Garage Sales began, bringing the bargain hunters into town. On Saturday, Marengo’s FFA Alumni held a 19-mile Tractor Ride to raise funds for the high school program, the kids, and scholarships. At the same time, on the edge of town, Thomas the Tank Engine drew thousands of people to ride the trains and enjoy the Thomas experience at the Illinois Railway Museum. On Sunday, the McHenry County Historical Museum, in downtown Union, held their annual Heritage Day events with activities, entertainment, and a car show. The Marengo FFA Alumni usually does a 20-mile ride beginning at Clasen’s Tavern, but, with Thomas the Tank Engine in town, they altered their route to go around the Illinois Railway Museum instead of past it. “55 total tractors and drivers participated, 19 miles traveled. All funds raised will go to the general fund of the Marengo FFA Alumni for our scholarship and to supplement funds for supplies, awards, and trips for the agricultural education department at MCHS,” said Adam Roth, president. Meanwhile, at the Illinois Railway Museum (which was expecting thousands of people to arrive) one of the outside food vendors had a family emergency and could not be there for the weekend, leaving a gaping hole in their thorough plans. Chester Mazurkiewicz of the IRM said, “Ron Onesti bailed out the Illinois Railway Museum the day of the Thomas opening, due to a family emergency of a previous vendor, by providing his food service tent. and McHenry County communities, and to bring professionalism as needed, to enhance a better relationship. “Onesti started out in silk screening many years ago in Chicago. He has always been a public servant and has involved himself in community affairs. He is the owner of Arcadia Theaters in St. Charles and Evanston. He is presently in partnership with Donley’s Wild West Town and Rockabilly Café. He dedicates most of his time in keeping involved with communities and providing community service.” “Just like the Wild West Town,” Ron Onesti said. “This (MarengoUnion area) is enchanted waters for me. I was unaware of the magic out here. This is one of those things where you open a small door, not knowing what’s on the other side, and you are totally floored by what’s there. It’s an amazing thing. “It has opened my eyes to what is in this area. I just can’t wait to be a part of it and do my best to increase awareness of what is going on out here.” Once he get the SOS call from the IRM, Onesti pulled off a miracle and put together an entire food service tent, complete with sufficient food and staff, to serve the crowds at the ever-popular Day
Out with Thomas event, on the morning of opening day. Impressive. The temperatures on Sunday, July 14, matched Saturday’s oppressive heat, but still did not deter the guests for the McHenry County
Historical Museum’s Heritage Fair. The theme for this year was ‘Go with the Flow’ and had a ‘60s flower power feel. (Groovy, man.) Tie dyed shirts abounded and the ladies in the Children’s craft area were making braided headbands along
with other fun crafts and games. The train whistle could be heard frequently over the DJ’s music for the car show as both huge events were held within a mile of each other. The Clef Hangers serenaded Heritage Fair guests; Freddy Fredricks & Friends performed magic; Russ Davis called the live auction; the Home-Baked Pie Contest was judged; the Bake Sale got even more interest when people found out they were serving ice cream with the pie (when requested); the Garden Glitz Plant Sale did a brisk business as did the White Elephant Sale; the Cake Walk had a full circle of competitors; Boy Scout Troop 153 of Woodstock grilled brats and burgers; the Kettle Korn and Kona Ice vendors did business and the Garage Sales continued. If you missed all the excitement in Union, you missed a lot. Put the weekend on your calendar for next year and get out for a full weekend of family fun for all ages.
The Best of Show winner was Bob Thomson of Woodstock, recognized for his 1969 Pontiac Firebird.
