Air Force Association State President Thomas O’Shea and U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Grant R. Mulder, left to right, presented the association’s Illinois STEM Teacher of the Year Award to McHenry High School math Teacher Matt Adam, cen-

ter. Also pictured are Marsha Potthoff, principal at West Campus, and Dr. Ryan McTague, McHenry High School District 156 superintendent.

McHenry High School teacher is Illinois STEM Teacher of the Year Matt Adam, McHenry High School math teacher and newly named Air Force Association Aerospace Education STEM Teacher of the Year for Illinois, said his focus is meeting his math students where they are to get them where they need to be. His work as a teacher, along with his other jobs as a digital literacy coach, assistant athletic director, driver education teacher and more has drawn the atten-

tion of McHenry High School District 156 administrators and the Air Force Association. The Aerospace and STEM Education Teacher of the Year award is meant to recognize teachers who go above and beyond to inspire students in STEM education. Air Force Association State President Thomas O’Shea said he was impressed with all Adam juggles when he visited Adam’s West Campus class-

room earlier in the 2019-20 school year. O’Shea said Adam is also involved in the Knights of Columbus in addition to his work as a teacher. Adam was selected for the statewide honor by a panel of judges, including Maj. Gen. Grant R. Mulder. O’Shea and Mulder presented the award June 16 at West Campus. “The whole program there I was impressed with,” O’Shea said. Adam is starting his 17th year as a teacher in McHenry. He has taught just about all of the math classes McHenry

offers, including algebra, geometry and calculus. A native of Indiana and Purdue University graduate, Adam said he realized early on that he enjoyed math and that many others didn’t. At the beginning of each school year, Adam enjoys learning about each student’s comfort level with math. “I try to figure out where they are and try to push them up,” he said. Principal Marsha Potthoff, who nominated Adam, said he goes above and beyond for his students.

“We’re really proud of him,” Potthoff said. Dr. Ryan McTague, District 156 superintendent, said he also appreciates how Adam helps other teachers to learn new technology and innovation for their classrooms. “Matt has been invaluable as a digital literacy coach, a teacher and a role model,” McTague said. The statewide honor comes after Adam was selected Teacher of the Year for the Air Force Association Chicagoland/O’Hare Chapter 142.

Predatory criminal sexual assault arrest Virtual town hall discussion On Wednesday, June 17, the Woodstock Police Department’s Investigations Division initiated a criminal investigation of a reported criminal sexual assault. This investigation originated from a report received from the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) about multiple incidents that took place approximately five years ago within the city limits of Woodstock, where a minor child was sexually assaulted. The minor child, who was under the age of 13 at this time of the reported incident(s), was subsequently forensically interviewed at the McHenry County Child Advocacy Center. At the Woodstock Police Department on Thursday, June 25, Woodstock detectives were able to meet with and interview the suspect, who was identified as 50-year-old Woodstock resident Homero Alcaraz-Bello. After conferring with the McHenry County States Attorney’s Office, Alcaraz-Bello was placed under arrest and charged with Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault-Class X Felony and Aggravated Criminal Sexual AbuseClass 2 Felony. He was processed at the Woodstock Police Department and later transported to the McHenry County

Adult Correctional Facility. His bond was set at $500,000 with 10 percent to apply, and he was scheduled to appear in court on June 30. The minor Homero child victim has Alcaraz-Bello never resided with the suspect and this investigation remains active. To protect the identity of the victim and because the investigation remains active, no further information will be released. When children are victims of violent crimes, Woodstock Police Department personnel work in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team consisting of members from the McHenry County States Attorney’s Office, the Department of Children and Family Services and the McHenry County Child Advocacy Center. The public is reminded that an arrest is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

on health and safety

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL-16) on Tuesday, June 23, joined Illinois political, business and community leaders in a virtual town hall to discuss the importance of American global health, diplomacy, and development programs to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and protect the health and safety of all Americans—in Illinois and across the country. “The coronavirus pandemic has created a health and economic crisis that has challenged the American way of life. Alongside my colleagues in Congress, I am committed to responding to this pandemic here in Illinois and coordinating with our allies around

the world as we fight COVID-19 for the good of the global community,” said Kinzinger. “As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I know how vital our country’s investments in global health and diplomacy are to stopping the spread of this virus overseas, while also upholding our American values and preventing new outbreaks.” The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) hosted the online event at a time when policy makers are considering our country’s response to the pandemic at home and abroad, including resources
