McHenry 2021 graduation ceremony
A total of 480 Class of 2021 members graduated from McHenry High School’s East and West campuses on May 20 and May 21 after being told that their ability to adapt to challenges from the past year should serve them well in the future. This graduation also marked the last for East Campus, which will become a freshman campus next year. East Campus held three group ceremonies on May 20 for 132 seniors while West Campus had 14 ceremonies May 20 and May 21 for 348 graduating seniors. Next year, following the completion of a new 70,000-square-foot Center for Science, Technology and Industry, West Campus will become the Upper Campus serving grades 10-12. For the last graduation for two separate high schools, all of the seniors were celebrated for their ability to COURTESY PHOTO McHenry County News thrive despite a global panMcHenry High School’s Class of 2021 graduates were celebrated for thriving during a year of changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. demic. This year marks the celebration of 50 years of protecting natural resources and cultural heritage at McHenry County Conservation District. One of the best ways to celebrate is to remember our roots. The Powers-Walker House is a restored 1854 Greek revival home nestled in the beautiful Glacial Park Conservation Area. All ages are welcome to attend the next open house event, “Meet Mary Powers,” on Sunday, June 6, at the Powers-Walker House, 6201 Harts Road, Ringwood, for hourly tours, noon until 3 p.m. Learn about the resident families who called this area home. This event is about the first lady to raise a family in the house. Volunteers in historical attire are available to answer your questions. Take advantage of a rare opportunity to tour the historic farmhouse, which is open to the public only a handful of times each year. There is no cost to attend, however registration is required and space is limited. Register online at MCCD.me/PWH21.
The Food Shed Co-op exceeded a significant milestone on the way to opening a community-owned grocery store in Woodstock. The startup food cooperative currently has 1,021 registered owner-members who have purchased at least two shares of stock to help bring this project to fruition. On Dec.11, 2020, the Food Shed Co-op announced that it had purchased land to build an 8,000-square-foot full-service grocery store at the intersection of U.S. HWY 14 and Lake Shore Drive in Woodstock, approximately 3 miles north of McHenry County College (MCC). Since announcing the store location, the Food Shed Co-op has added almost 300 additional owner-members. The co-op expects to reach 1,200 owner-members by early July and will then begin a capital campaign to
build a $4.2 million grocery store. The store is expected to open in the fall of 2022. The Food Shed Co-op was incorporated in April 2014 and now has owner-members throughout McHenry County as well as surrounding communities. The co-op intends to advocate for local farmers and artisans, support the local economy by circulating dollars within the immediate community and benefit the environment by reducing the distance food travels and thus its carbon footprint. By choosing to support local and sustainable food businesses, co-op member-owners and shoppers will help build a stronger, more resilient local food system. The co-op has begun the search process for a general manager with grocery and co-op experience. The new grocery store will
