New grocery store coming to Crystal Lake Demolition of the existing Sears store and groundbreaking for Mariano’s in Crystal Lake took place in the spring of 2017, and construction will continue throughout the year, leading to an estimated opening in 2018.

The 74,800-square-foot building will feature Mariano’s signature glass rotunda, which houses a café area for customers.

The store’s interior will be unique to Crystal Lake, offering a vast assortment of freshly prepared meal options and an extensive award-winning produce department.

Mayor Aaron Shepley said “We are excited to welcome Mariano’s to the Crystal Lake business community. Mariano’s is a premier grocer that offers quality products, variety, exceptional service and convenience and this is a perfect location for them.”

Continental Properties Company and Sears Holdings Corp., are joint venture partners in the development.

MCDOT planning construction of roundabout The McHenry County Department of Transportation is addressing the high number of accidents at the intersection of Raffel Road and Charles Road, north of Woodstock North High School, by constructing the area’s first roundabout.

Charles Road, between Greenwood Road and Route 47, will be closed for this construction throughout the summer. MCDOT has placed signs notifying drivers of the impending construction at Raffel Road and IL Route 120 and along Raffel Road up to Charles Road.

The improvements and the ultimate construction of a roundabout at this location can be expected to result in the following benefits: Improve the appearance of this intersection, which is a gateway street

leading to the downtown (see picture, courtesy of Google Earth®); Allow for the opportunity to install signage to define an access route to the downtown; Improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and reduce vehicle waiting time resulting from the existing five way intersection.

Based upon the recommendations of the Woodstock Square Streetscape Guidelines for improvements at the intersection of Lake/South/Madison, City staff entered this project into the McHenry County Council of Mayors Surface Transportation Program (STP) in 2013.

STP funding will provide for the reimbursement of 80% of the total cost for construction and construction engineering (Phase lll) services

Based upon the breakdown of estimated costs from HLR for the City’s roundabout project, the City could receive reimbursement of approximately $900,000 for a project, which is estimated to cost

$1,122,074 to construct. Actual construction of the roundabout will likely take place in 2018 or 2019.

Algonquin switches to LED street lights The Village of Algonquin recently completed a project to convert municipal street lights to lightemitting diode (LED) fixtures. The project converted a total of 135 high pressure sodium fixtures to LED, resulting in energy savings of up to 85 percent.

The project, with a total cost of $51,063, was primarily financed through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Public Sector Energy Efficiency Program which rebated the Village $37,500 of project costs.

“This project demonstrates great stewardship of tax dollars and the environment,” stated Village Presi-

dent John Schmitt. “The energy savings and extended fixture life produce real financial and operational benefits for the Village.”

The expected operating life of the new LED fixtures are in excess of seven years as opposed to high pressure sodium fixtures which were replaced every two to three years.

This allows the Village to reallocate resources from street light maintenance to other operational areas.

The LED fixtures were installed on the following roadways in Algonquin: Algonquin Road (Illinois Route 31 to Hubbard Street); Main

Street (Edward Street to Washington Street); Huntington Drive (Illinois Route 31 to Circle Drive); County Line Road (Millbrook Drive to Merchant Drive); Millbrook Drive (south of Corporate Parkway); Harnish Drive (Golden Eagle Drive to Sherman Road) Esplanade Drive; Becky Lynn Drive; and Meyer Drive.

Street lights owned and maintained by ComEd or other jurisdictions (McHenry County, Kane County, Illinois Department of Transportation) were not included as part of this project.

Crystal Lake responds to fire on Glacier Circle

On June 1, 2017 at 12:54 a.m., the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded to a two-story, residence for smoke and flames coming from the back of the building. The fire was called in by the neighbors who saw the flames from their residence.

The owners had evacuated the prior to the arrival of the Fire Rescue Department. First units arrived on the scene at 1:02 a.m. to find flames coming from the deck in the rear of the residence. Fire crews deployed a hose line to the rear of the residence to extinguish the fire.

The fire was extinguished at 1:14 a.m. and fire damage was limited to the rear deck. The cause of the fire is undetermined. There were no injuries to any of the residents or firefighters. The estimated damage is

believed to be below $4,000.

Summer Solstice Outdoor Yoga Celebration to feature all-level class in Crystal Lake, Huntley In celebration of International Yoga Day, Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center will host outdoor yoga classes on Saturday, June 17, as part of the Summer Solstice Outdoor Yoga Celebration.

The simultaneous events will include all-level yoga and more activities at the Crystal Lake and Huntley Health Bridge locations.

The celebration will kick off with check-in at 9 a.m.

An hourlong yoga class, taught by Health Bridge’s certified yoga instructors, will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats though a limited number will be available.

From 10:45 a.m. to noon there will be food, raffle prizes and interactive booths from Centegra’s Wellness and Nutrition departments, plus Pilates and Group Fitness.

Prizes will include private yoga lessons, yoga mats and more.

The Crystal Lake event will be at the field east of the fitness center, 200

E. Congress Parkway. The Huntley event will be east of the fitness center, 10450 Algonquin Road.

In the event of inclement weather, the Crystal Lake event will move to the indoor basketball court at the fitness center and the Huntley event will be at the indoor tennis courts at the fitness center.

The event is open to those 12 and older. KidZone for children ages 4 months to 11 years old will be available at $1.75 per hour for participants.

The cost to attend is $5 per person with all proceeds being donated to the Centegra Health System Foundation, a nonprofit that supports a wide variety of community services at Centegra Health System.

Admission includes access to the outdoor pool on June 17 and a gift bag worth more than $25.
