Pie bakers wanted Do your pies take the cake?

Bakers are needed for the McHenry County Historical Society’s 33rd Annual Heritage Fair, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 8, on the museum grounds at 6422 Main St. in Union.

This year’s contest features three categories: Fruit, berry and mixed fruit/other. No cream pies, please.

Also, while multiple entries are appreciated for resale, only one pie per category is eligible to be judged.

Interested bakers can register their pies between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. the day of the Heritage Fair in the West Harmony School, located on the museum grounds.

The entry fee is $2. Judging will take place at 10:30 a.m. with ribbons awarded to the winners in each category, plus a special award for the grand champion. Last year’s grand champion is ineligible for prizes this year and will, instead, serve as a judge.

Pies will be sold by the slice immediately following the judging at the Heritage Fair’s bake sale with the exception of the grand prize winning pie which will be auctioned off.

Cleaning out that garage, shed or spare bedroom this spring? The McHenry County Historical Society is seeking donations for its popular “white elephant” sale as part of this year’s 33rd annual Heritage Fair.

The sale has become a muchanticipated and pivotal part of the McHenry County Historical Society’s fundraising effort. Items range from vintage clothing, garden tools, furniture, new and vintage books, glassware, seasonal merchandise, games, sporting equipment, mintcondition slide projectors and tables of odds and ends you’ll not find anywhere else.

This year’s sale runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 8, in the Schuette Building, next door to the museum. No early birds. Checks and cash only.

Donations may be dropped off at the historical society museum, 6422 Main St., during regular business hours – 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please, no broken or soiled items, or items that have been recalled or contain hazardous materials.

Just about any clean, resellable item is welcome – with a few exceptions: large appliances, antiquated computers and electronic items, VHS tapes, medical supplies, clothing, and child items such as cribs, car seats and used stuffed animals will not be accepted.

With nice weather upon us, families have started enjoying outdoor events. Because summertime fun often involves the animal world, the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) reminds residents of the risk of picking up gastrointestinal illnesses (diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramping) from animals such as salmonella, campylobacter, or E.coli by petting or touching animals.

Feeding pigs, riding ponies or watching calf roping at the county fair is educational and fun. Getting face-to-face with animals at petting zoos, fairs and festivals also increases the risk of getting sick. According to Susan Karras, RN, Director of Nursing for MCDH, “During the spring and summer, more people, including children, interact with livestock and poultry. This means we often see an increase in gastrointestinal cases associated with animals.”

When visiting a pet store or planning a trip to the petting zoo, careful handwashing and taking a few simple precautions reduces the risk of illnesses associated with animals: Always wash your hands right after petting animals, even if you did not touch the animals.

Keep food and drink out of animal areas.

Don’t share your food with animals Children younger than 5 years always need adult supervision in animal areas.

Never allow children to put their thumbs, fingers, or objects (for example: pacifiers) in their mouths when they’re around animals or in an animal area.

Do not take or use strollers, bottles, pacifiers, spill-proof cups, or toys into animal areas.

Andres L. Hernandez sentenced for Aggravated Robbery Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that Andres L. Hernandez, 22, pled guilty to the offense of Aggravated Robbery, a Class 1 Felony, following a negotiated plea on May 9, 2018 before the Honorable James S. Cowlin.

Hernandez was sentenced to 7½ years in the Illinois Department of Corrections and ordered to pay restitution.

In October 2016, Hernandez and

a co-defendant confronted the male victim in the parking lot of Super Market La Trinidad, 1230 Davis Road, Woodstock. While displaying a firearm the two men struck the victim in the head, and took his wallet and cellular telephone.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Victor Escarcida of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Calling on all runners: Join in the Torch Run for Special Olympics

On Sunday, June 10 at 8 a.m., the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics Illinois will kick-off. The run will start at the Barrington Hills Police Department and ends at Knox Park in McHenry. If you wish to take part in the run as a runner or a volunteer, contact Officer Ed Pluviose at 815-356-3731 or by email at epluviose@crystallake.org.

Run route: westbound Algonquin Rd from Barrington Hills PD, then proceeds north on IL Route 31 to Knox Park. Police escort and traffic control will be provided by local and county agencies. Local radio station Star105.5 to broadcast live at Knox Park where food will be provided.

A large RV will serve as the tail vehicle for runners to use for break during the run. There will be plenty of water/sports drinks to supply the runners. A runner can run any distance he/she chooses. The Crystal Lake Leg (#15) starts at the corner of IL Route 31 and James R Rakow Road and is scheduled to arrive at that location at approximately 9:30AM. Please arrive at location at least 10-15 minutes early.

Teague, Hanners plead guilty to Possession Of Heroin

Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that Raymond P. Teague, 31, pled guilty to Possession of Heroin (15-100 grams), a Class 1 Felony, before the Honorable James Cowlin. Alexandra M. Hanners, 24, pled guilty to Possession of a Controlled Substance.

On October 8, 2017, members of the McHenry Police Department observed Teague and Hanners asleep in a vehicle in the parking lot of a closed park. Further investigation led to the discovery of 134 bags (approximately 32 grams) of heroin packaged for sale in Teague’s possession. Hanners admitted to using some of the heroin found in Teague’s possession and also admitted driving him to conduct deliveries of the heroin.

Teague was sentenced to 9.5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections pursuant to the plea.

Sheriff’s office investigating two-vehicle fatal crash A 77-year-old Vernon Hills man died and a 32-year-old Woodstock man incurred minor injuries in a twovehicle crash in unincorporated Richmond Wednesday morning.

At 7 a.m., on May 16, 2018, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, along with Richmond Fire Protection District and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District, responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Tryon Grove Road and Keystone Road in unincorporated Richmond.

Preliminary investigation indicated that a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by the 32-year-old was traveling eastbound on Tryon Grove Road west of Keystone Road, and did not have a stop sign. A 2007 Toyota Prius, driven by the Vernon Hills man, was traveling northbound on Keystone Road approaching Tryon Grove Road, where there is a stop sign. The Prius stopped but then for unknown reasons pulled out in front of the Suburban, causing the collision.

Raymond Puterbaugh sentenced to 10 years for Aggravated DUI Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that 48-year-old Raymond Puterbaugh of Silver Lake, Wis., pled guilty to Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, a class X felony and was sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

On Jan. 29, 2018, Puterbaugh was stopped after a police officer noticed his vehicle weaving and speeding.

Following the traffic stop, the officer noticed signs of alcohol impairment and asked Puterbaugh to perform field sobriety tests. Puterbaugh refused field sobriety tests and following his arrest, Puterbaugh also refused to submit to a breathalyzer test.

An investigation into Puterbaugh’s background revealed that he has been convicted of a total of nine prior violations for the offense of

Crystal Lake High School graduate Caroline Rausch began working on her first design, a kit that motorists can use during floods, with her robotics team in 8th grade. She developed her second design, a tennis ball sorting machine, with two other classmates during her junior year at Crystal Lake South. Caroline plans to study mechanical engineering at Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in the fall.

Swift Water Teams from McHenry & Lake Counties, along with McHenry Township Fire on-duty crews, participate in training at the Fox River last week. Here the team practices rappelling skills thus placing the “victim” in the water. Then, the victim is rescued using a combination of swimmers and rope bags, which require coordinated efforts.
