Local students graduated from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater celebrated the achievements of its graduates on Saturday, May 18, and Tuesday, May 21, as proud families and friends gathered for the 2019 spring commencement ceremonies. At the university’s Whitewater campus, a total of 1,643 graduates crossed the stage on May 18 to receive their degrees. The morning ceremony, which began at 10 a.m., recognized 759 undergraduate and 88 graduate students from the colleges of Arts and Communication, and Business and Economics. The afternoon ceremony began at 3 p.m. and recognized 696 undergraduate and 100 graduate students from the colleges of Education and Professional Studies, and Letters and Sciences. The ceremonies, which lasted approximately two hours each, were held in Kachel Fieldhouse. The commencement speaker for both ceremonies was Damani Short, who earned a BBA in management computer systems in 1994. The Waukesha native has had a wide-ranging career in information technology in organizations as diverse as GE Healthcare, Sharpie, the U.S. Olympic Committee, Johnson Controls and Shutterfly. Crystal Lake grad wins conservation scholarship The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is pleased to announce that Ian Shuman, recent graduate of Crystal Lake Central High School, is the recipient of The Defenders’ environmental scholarship. The annual scholarship is given to a deserving senior who has demonstrated a commitment to the environment through volunteer work, has stellar recommendations, a well-written essay and has plans to study in an

area related to conservation or the environment. Ian plans to attend the University of Notre Dame and begin in his studies in the area of biology, with a possible emphasis on conservation and field research. Ian received his $1,000 scholarship at his school’s senior awards night held on May 15 at Central and presenting the award at the ceremony was Cynthia Kanner, Executive Director of the Environmental Defenders.
