Artist finds inspiration

McHenry County Conservation District invites you to view a special exhibit, “Observations: Walking in Wonder” by Barbara Schneider, on display now through July 4 at Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. This exhibit is free and is open to the public daily, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Local artist Barbara Schneider uses nature as the starting point for creating abstract, sophisticated interpretations in mixed media. Her work is meant to make you view nature with new eyes and provide the opportunity for physical, mental, or emotional reflection. She walked many of the conservation district sites and recorded what she saw, heard, smelled and experienced. She used these observations to create hand-stitched textile maps that serve as a record of her natural journey. “It was a wonderful experience to see both the large sweeps of prairies and woods but also the smaller more intimate treasures that sites have to offer. When I look at the artwork and read the accompanying text, I am transported back to the walk itself. I hope viewers will enjoy the art for the art’s sake and then be enticed to go walk one of the many beautiful conservation sites in McHenry County.” Schneider began quilting in 1996, and discovered the pleasure of working with cloth, paint, dye and thread. Her interest in the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi strongly influences her work. She teaches as well as exhibits nationally and internationally. Her work is in both private and public collections. For more information contact the Lost Valley Visitor Center at 815-678-4532 or visit MCCDistrict.org. Patients will soon receive care in newly constructed medical-surgical and medical-surgical observation units at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. The modernized units are part of the health system’s plan to transform the hospital and create an all-private-room environment to better meet the needs of patients in McHenry County. The new medical-surgical units feature private rooms, additional windows to bring in natural light, dimmable LED lighting and bathrooms that were designed for the comfort and safety of patients and visitors. New team stations will reduce noise and make it easier for physicians and nurses to collaborate with other hospital colleagues. In the medical-surgical observation unit, which provides 23-hour care for patients who do not require inpatient admission, patient rooms were upgraded to enhance privacy and relaxation. “Patients and families will immediately notice how we’ve changed the space to enhance our healing environment,” said Nick Rave, president of Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. “The improvements go beyond what you can immediately see. We also upgraded systems and technologies to support innovative treatments and leading-edge care.” The hospital investments, which cost $6.2 million, demonstrate Northwestern Medicine’s commitment to enhancing the services available to people in greater McHenry County, Rave said. “What began as a project to modernize our hospital units took on new meaning with the pandemic,” Rave said. “We pushed ahead with the project despite COVID-19 to provide

patients a safer environment where we can do even more to prevent the spread of infection.” With a focus on financial stewardship, leaders at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital budgeted more than $6 million more to privatize and modernize additional patient rooms in the next six months. In the next several years, the team plans to update the surgery department and public areas to further enhance the patient experience.

“Our patients come first when we consider our future projects,” Rave said. “We need to carefully schedule construction to avoid interrupting the care of our current patients while we create the environment we want to offer our future patients. Our construction and clinical teams have partnered to make this modernization project work for everyone involved.” Physicians and hospital staff members were included in the design of the new units and re-

cently took part in simulations to prepare for move-in days the third week of May. During those simulations, team members walked through patient care situations to familiarize themselves with the new unit layouts and technologies. “We are delighted to welcome patients into a modern environment that reflects the advanced care Northwestern Medicine provides,” Rave said. “It is just one part of our plans to revolutionize how patients in our community receive care.”
