Huntley HS journalism team takes 4th in state competition

On Friday, April 28, the Huntley HS Journalism team placed 4th in state in the IHSA State Journalism Tournament. Individual winners included Courtney Thomas (State Champion, Newspaper Design), Ryan O’Sullivan (3rd place, Photo Storytelling), Madison Barr (3rd place, Advertising), and Emily Kindl (5th place, Copy Editing). It marked the 8th top-five finish since 2006 for the HHS Journalism team. “It was kind of a shock to get first for Newspaper Design, but it really validated all of the design work I’ve done for the magazine,” Thomas said. Thomas is the 8th state champion in journalism to come from HHS since 2006. The success at the state finals followed the team sectional championship at the NIU IHSA Sectional held April 22. Made in McHenry event showcases artisans

By Anne Eickstadt REPORTER

The Made in McHenry County event on Saturday, May 6, featured local artists and craftspeople demonstrating their skills. Christina Guerrero and Anthony Jay Houston, members of the Potts & Pans steel drum band played “Yesterday” by the Beatles while a second band sets up nearby. This event at the Mix’nMingle in complimented the first day of this year’s Farmers’ Market on Woodstock’s Historic Square. Robert Blue of Blue Eagle Pottery has been creating useful works of art for over 50 years.”McHenry County is a wonderful place to visit for artistic minded tourists,” Blue said. “Hand-crafted things are unique and rare these days. It’s amazing how many things like chocolates, beers, coffee, jewelry, glazed pottery, watercolors, leather, even forged iron, and many other things are being made by people who are tucked away in little farmhouses and homes in McHenry County,” he says. “They are making a living with their creativity at a time these days when factories are gone and jobs are scarce. I bet that 90% of the factory workers enjoyed their jobs because they were making things with their hands. It’s very satisfying. I wish factory workers had the fortitude to go from factory work to making things on their own. “Once you have to make something on your own to

sell it, you not only have to be the manufacturer and designer, you also have to be the vice-president, bookkeeper, secretary, janitor, and everything else as well. You have to wear so many hats that a lot of people don’t want to do it. “I’m so lucky to be doing this for 50 years. When I first started I made so many mistakes. I was losing money right and left. Now, I am famous and it’s wonderful. “I am now selling in 70 shops in the United States alone. Some of those shops are in Brooklyn, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Austin, Denver, and Black Mountain, North Carolina. I am represented in ‘Collectibles’ around the world.” The Made in McHenry County event offered booths displaying hand-crafted one-of-a-kind jewelry, soaps, pottery, and more while local bands displayed their own unique art forms. Makers, Artisans, and Craftspeople who attended the event were: Blue Eagle Pottery, Inked and Nailed Co.; Julie Ann’s Frozen Custard; Conscious Cup Coffee Roasters; Silver Prairie Farm Natural Soap Company; Pirro’s Sauce; Material Things Artisan Market; Crystal Lake Brewing, and Meals Like Mom’s - The Personal Chef Supporting artists were: Potts & Pans Steelband, Catfish Conspiracy, McHenry County Living, Visit McHenry County, Illinois, and HoneyCraft Market.
