Antique Shopping & Chocolate By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

pring has arrived and people are spending more time getting out of the house. The lure of the road beckons us. Many people are seeking out collectible antiques and vintage items while on their drive in the sunny weather. One such place to seek collectibles is the Crystal Lake Antique Mall. It is home to dozens of dealers of antiques and collectibles. Its 8000 square feet of area houses items for the home such as furniture, lamps, pottery, glassware, artwork, kitchenware. It holds vintage clothing, jewelry, hats, bags and purses. Vinyl records, tools, linens, toys, World War II memorabilia, Depression
glass and other collectibles round out the various types of unique items which can be found. If you make your way from the parking lot (free, unmetered parking) entrance all the way through to the Williams Street entrance, you might find the cherry on top of your shopping trip to be chocolate coated. That segment of the building houses Mellie’s Chocolate & Co. Mellie’s delicious candies are made on the premises, fresh, homemade treats to enjoy on the spot or to take home with you. Or both. Or you can opt for their very fine ice cream. Though housed under the same roof, on the corner of Crystal Lake Avenue and Williams Street, the Crystal Lake Antique Mall and Mellie’s
Chocolate are two separate businesses. Mellie’s is open from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm. The Crystal Lake Antique Mall is open from 10:30 am until 5:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. On Thursday, it extends its hours from 10:30 am until 8:30 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the antique mall is open from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. It also hosts special events and Fireside Chats with experts and special guests discussing collecting antiques, restoring antiques and other topics. The Crystal Lake Antique Mall can be found online at www.clantiquemall.com or on Facebook at Crystal Lake Antique Mall. Mellie’s Chocolate can be seen on Facebook at Mellie’s Chocolate & Co. “Kishwaukee Heron” won a People’s Choice Award at the very popular Fourth Friday at Starline Gallery.
he March, 2016, Featured Artist of Fourth Friday at the Starline Gallery in Harvard is Paul Turnbaugh of Marengo. This honor gains him a plum position at a very popular, wellattended art event in which to display his artwork. In the past few months, Turnbaugh has won the People’s Choice Award for both his “Morning in the Heartland” and his “Kishwaukee Heron” art at the Fourth Friday events. If that wasn’t enough, Turnbaugh has been selected to design the State of Illinois’ Gold Star monument in Springfield to honor families who have lost a loved one in military service. “I’ll be designing all the graphics on the granite,” he says. “My son is a veteran of the Army Infantry. I paint a lot for military organizations, so I’m always painting military themed and patriotic images.” Turnbaugh is an Illinois native who headed to California for advanced art training. He returned to Illinois to raise his family and moved to Marengo a couple of years ago. His work as an illustrator led him in many directions included doing advertising and illustrating children’s books. Once he turned from illustrat-
