Operation Click Club banquet celebrates safe student driving

Students from Huntley High School’s Operation Click club attended their annual year-end banquet. Also in attendance were two other HHS students who were randomly chosen to attend based upon signed Operation Click Student Driving Contracts.

Operation Click is a charitable organization working with 39 area high schools to promote safe driving habits among high school students.

At the beginning of each school year, HHS students are asked to sign a driving contract including agreements to never text and drive, drink and drive, or quit school, and to always wear a seat belt. Throughout the school year random contracts are pulled and prizes awarded to those students.

Each spring Operation Click hosts a banquet for participating high schools at the Holiday Inn in Crystal Lake. The highlight of the banquet is the chance for one lucky student to win a free car.

Prior to the banquet, HHS Operation Click staff advisors pull at least one student contract. Where is your toaster? Cupboard or countertop?

We keep our toaster in the cupboard. Early in our marriage, this was a point of contention. My husband grew up in a home where the toaster sat on the counter. My family housed the breakfast appliance in the cupboard. As newlyweds, each of us was comfortable and happy with our own location of origin. But we couldn’t have it both ways – unless we got two toasters or a divorce and neither of those seemed like a viable option.

One of us would have to compromise.

With this issue, I managed to talk him over to my side. But over the years I’ve acquiesced a time or two in his direction. Marriage is a partnership. And cooperation. And changing where you keep your toaster or how you fold your socks.

And change is hardly ever easy.

But this isn’t about marriage. It’s about toasters. Toaster location, to

You might be surprised that there are actual articles written about the location of one’s toaster. I was surprised. Bloggers are blogging about toasters and people like me are Googling those blogs.

The chatter is mostly about cleanliness and decluttering one’s kitchen. One might think a person who stores their toaster in the cupboard is neater than one who leaves it on the counter.

I don’t think this is the case.

I stumbled on this concept last week while eating a piece of toast and thereafter putting the toaster away. As I did, I noted the appliance was a crumb-laden, scorch-filled mess – far from what I’d call neat.

The cupboard wasn’t much better. It, too, was littered with crumbs.

Each time someone puts the toaster in the cupboard a few crumbs fall out the bottom, accumulating over time.

We don’t notice, really, because the toaster sits atop the crumbs and the cupboard door shuts and our mess is out of sight, out of mind.

If I kept my toaster on the counter, I wouldn’t be able to ignore a pileup of crumbs. I’d probably wipe them away every morning after breakfast.

I’d be more cognizant of the appearance of my toaster and more prone to give it a quick swipe with a soapy dishcloth or paper towel.

People who keep their toasters

(and myriad other household objects) in the cupboard might appear decluttered, but they may be a whole lot messier than someone with an overloaded countertop.

Just because you can’t see someone’s toast crumbs doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

I said this column was about toasters. I guess I lied.

It’s about life and crumbs and what we do with them – because we all have crumbs and splotches on our stainless and scorched spots where we’d rather not be scorched.

We all wrestle with real issues and problems and wonder if our efforts are enough or if we should be trying harder.

We worry and ruminate about the metaphorical crumbs in our life that won’t even be a metaphorical blip on our radar in a year, much less five. We get tired sometimes. We all struggle with how to keep our

toasters and cupboards and counters squeaky clean – or at least have them appear that way to others.

This makes me sigh.

Let’s just say I have crumbs, and I know you do too. But crumbs are inconsequential. They aren’t important in the big scheme. I won’t point yours out if you’ll return the favor.

I’d love it if we could agree to embrace our collective crumbs and get on with the much more important business of living.

Now on to tackling the issue of how to fold socks…

The poet Mary Oliver writes, “Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

For starters, I think I’ll read more poetry. And write some too. And paint. And make collage things.

And journals. And note cards. I will read books that thrill me. I will watch movies that touch me. I will eat popcorn.

I will help others understand that everything dies, and always feels too soon. We must love while we can. And that is every day. I will do my best to be a role model for living life fully expressed. That is my acronym for L.I.F.E. - live it fully expressed.

I plan to play with my Prince Charming. He understands that life is precious and wild. Walking through the forest hand in hand with my honey is heaven on earth.

feel the calm and the exhilaration. I will lift my face to the sun and sky and smile. In general, on water and on land, I will smile more.

This one wild and precious life is fleeting and yet is full of days and days and days with endless possibility. Hour upon hour upon hour.

There are sixty minutes in an hour and twenty-four hours in every day. That gives me 1440 minutes.

That’s not much, yet it’s enough.

I will not ever say I “wasted” any of those precious minutes. If I linger long or lose myself in thought or sleep late, those are minutes well spent.

This is the only time I will be on this earth in this time in this body,

(I may come back another time as a princess, I’m pretty sure of it), so I will relax and enjoy. I will do as my desk message board says: I will surrender to joy.

I will let go of worry and I will remind myself every day that life is leap of faith after leap of leap after leap of faith. I will trust.

I will give more hugs. To friends, family and strangers. I will explore more places. I will give my blessing if my son moves to Mars. I will give my blessing when my sons

want to move anywhere.

I will listen to music. I will dance. I may even sing - in front of other people.

Is it just spring fever that has me waxing poetic to Mary Oliver’s question? No, it is “life” fever. I see the magnitude and the compactness. I am not afraid. I rejoice.

Illinois Tollway to give away tree seedlings, wildflower seeds to celebrate Arbor Day

Celebration promotes the Chicago Region Trees Initiative and the restoration of pollinator habitats

The Tollway’s efforts support the Chicago Region Trees Initiative established in 2013 by The Morton Arboretum and a collaboration of Chicago-region partners to develop and implement a strategy that builds a healthier and more diverse urban forest by 2050.

The landscape master plan will also include the seeding of native grasses and flowers in keeping with the Tollway’s pollinator program goals. The Illinois Tollway will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 28, by giving away 7,500 tree seedlings and 7,500 pollinator seed packets to customers at its headquarters and oases locations throughout the Tollway system.

As part of its efforts to increase environmental benefits and sustainability, the Illinois Tollway is working to enhance aesthetics and expand tree canopy coverage along the Tollway system. In addition, the Tollway is continuing its pollinator program to restore and create habitat for monarch butterflies and other important pollinators.

“The Illinois Tollway is as committed to supporting the areas alongside our roadways as we are to delivering and maintaining pavement and bridges,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Greg Bedalov. “We are sharing tree seedlings and wildflower seed packets to encourage the public to join our ongoing effort to provide habitat and support our region’s vital ecosystem.”

Numbers shows the way to the promise land

I’ll never forget Pearl.

Reflecting the sense of audacious entitlement, defiance and rebellion of the people constantly complaining to Moses about everything including their hardships, diet, living arrangements and God’s leadership through him, I’ll never forget how she rushed past my secretary into my study, plopped down in the chair in front of my desk, exhaled, inhaled and blurted, “I hate your beard!”

Though I didn’t take the bait and took the time to peel the onion to discover what was really bothering her – her estranged son had a beard and she was transferring her frustrations to me – I made a terrible mistake by offering, “If it will make you feel better, I’ll shave off my beard.”

Unlike the Nazirites of Numbers who symbolized their devotion to God and set the standard for John the Baptist as well as succeeding generations of hippies by letting their hair grow long along with other funky stuff with no regard to popular fashions, I shaved off mine to curry her favor.

When I saw her coming through the receiving line at the end of worship on the succeeding Sunday, I expected her to shower me with affirmation and affection.

Instead, she exhaled, inhaled, and blurted, “Now about your moustache!”

Jesse White announces 13th annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition

Illinois Commerce Commission issues five-year safety program The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved the five-year plan for the Crossing Safety Improvements Program at railroad grade crossings and highway-rail grade separations across the state.

Over the course of Fiscal Years 2018-2022 the ICC expects to initiate automatic warning device installations for circuitry upgrades at nearly 220 crossings, construct or reconstruct 18 grade separations (bridges) and make low-cost improvements at over 1200 crossings.

The ICC prioritizes these projects based on safety factors like collision history, necessary improvements to rail corridors with conventional speed passenger trains and the need to add more highway and pedestrian separations. Grade separations create the safest possible passage because vehicles and pedestrians cross above or under the tracks, making no direct contact with the tracks themselves.

In 2016, Illinois recorded 102 collisions at public crossings resulting

in 25 deaths and 36 injuries. Those statistics are a reduction from 2015, when Illinois reported 125 collisions, 30 deaths and 83 injuries. The ICC is dedicated to “The Three E’s” of railroad safety: Education through Operation Lifesaver Illinois; Enforcement of existing laws to ensure motorists and pedestrians obey all railroad safety laws; and the Engineering necessary to make crossings physically and operationally as safe as possible.

The scope of the projects range from new automatic flashing light signal and crossing gate installations to new and improved vehicle and pedestrian bridges. Safety improvements may include increasing the vertical clearance for motor vehicles passing under railroad bridges, replacing older warning signals and gates, synchronizing grade crossing warning signals with adjacent traffic signals or installing sensor devices that will immediately alert the railroad to any failures in warning de-

Girl Scouts to host annual meeting at Kishwaukee College Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois will host its annual meeting from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 29, at Kishwaukee College, 21193 Malta Road, Malta.

This meeting encourages local Girl Scouts, ages 14 and older, and registered adult Girl Scout members to voice their opinions and help shape the future of Girl Scouting in northern Illinois.

Back in the Saddle: start seeing farm equipment

Each year, we continue to hear about farm equipment/motor vehicle accidents. Many of these accidents can be avoided. In fact, there was recently an accident where a motorist tried to pass a tractor.

Thankfully no one was injured.

It is that time of year, when farmers are beginning to prepare the soil for planting (if Mother Nature cooperates).

It is important for everyone to remember that we all need to share the roads. Farmers and motorists both have the right to use the roads.

Although farm equipment will use the roads all year round, we will soon begin to encounter more farm equipment on the roads.

Here are a few safety tips and reminders for both motorists and farmers to help prevent accidents on the roads during harvest season.

Help prevent accidents. Please stay alert, be patient, and when you see farm equipment ahead, slow down.

Motorist: • Reduce speed when encountering farm equipment on public roads. Flashing amber lights mean “CAUTION.” • Slow down when you see the Slow Moving Vehicle Emblem- the orange and red reflective triangle warns you that the tractor or combine travels at a slow rate of speed.

• Keep a safe distance from the farm equipment so the farmer can see you. If you can’t see his mirrors, he can’t see you!

• Pass wide, large farm equipment only if you know conditions are safe and you are sure the farmer will not be making a left-hand turn.

Be cautious when pulling back in.

• It is illegal to pass in a no passing zone or within 100 feet of an intersection, railroad crossing or bridge.

• Be prepared to yield to wide equipment.

• Always wear a safety belt and heed the road’s speed limit.

• Watch for the farmer’s indication of a turn. Newer equip-

ment has one or more amber lights flashing rapidly to indicate a turn.

Older equipment is typically not equipped with turn signals so watch for farmer’s hand signals.

Farmers: • Plan travel to avoid rush hours, bad weather, the busiest roads, and the time before daylight and after dark.

• Be obvious to motorists by proper use of reflective SMV emblems on any implement of husbandry operated on public roadways. It’s the law!

• Use reflective marking tape and reflectors on the extremities of equipment.

• Turn on hazard lights mounted on farm equipment and turn off field work lights for all roadway travel.

• Install mirrors that are wide enough for you to see what is following you.

• Always use a turn signal to indicated plans to turn into fields or driveways • Be aware of traffic oncoming, in front of you, and behind you.

• If road and shoulder conditions are safe, pull over temporarily to allow traffic to pass.

• Slow down on curves and turns. Check the traffic behind you.

• Minimize the width of equipment as much as possible. You may not interfere with traffic in the adjoining lane.

• People should make three left turns if they feel they are being followed.

• Don’t use electronics when alone.

• Walk facing traffic. If someone is being followed, get to crowded areas, reverse direction, cross street or walk in middle of street.

• The best way out of danger is running away.

• Get help by yelling real words,

calling 911 or pulling an alarm.

• Get a crime safety app such as www.crimepush.com.

• Put barriers between the attacker and oneself.

• Use self-defense only when there is no other choice.

• If a person hears a gun go off, run, hide and fight in that order.

• Keep the person’s car in good working order. Keep gasoline and a phone charger in the car.

• Buy, test and carry pepper spray.

• Have an alarm system installed in homes and businesses.

Home of the Sparrow’s mission is to provide hope, opportunity and support that empowers women and children as they journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

Currently, Home of the Sparrow operates: A Transitional shelter that can hold over 40 individuals per night 20 Affordable Housing Units located across Northern Illinois Three Subsidized Apartments geared for very low income individuals who are not ready for permanent housing An Outreach and Prevention Program with two case managers who work with at risk individuals or those who are experiencing homelessness.

A Rapid Re-Housing program that assists people who are homeless to return to permanent housing quickly.

On average Home of the Sparrow receives over 2000 calls a year from women in crisis. Just four short years ago the agency served 124. Today, HOS serves over 800 women and children in McHenry County and Northern Illinois.

Senator Syverson’s Week in Review: April 10-14 Fixing the state’s broken school funding formula is the goal of two legislative proposals introduced this week, while another recently filed measure seeks to address the teacher shortage in Illinois’ rural school districts.

In other news, the Illinois State Police is taking a proactive step to combat hate crimes in Illinois communities, and the Department of Revenue is reminding residents that the tax-filing deadline is quickly approaching.

New education funding legislation would advance true parity for schools After years of bipartisan negotiations, two legislative proposals have been advanced to reduce the inequity and inadequacy that has plagued the state’s more than 800 school districts, and truly address questions of school funding parity.

The legislation is based on the framework advanced by the Governor’s bipartisan Education Funding Reform Commission, and establishes an evidence-based school funding formula.

The evidence-based system establishes a formula that would take into account the vast and unique differences that exist between the state’s many districts—ranging from urban Chicago schools to rural downstate and suburban districts. Notably, the evidence-based system drives dollars to where they are most needed and where the additional resources can do the most good.

The evidence-based funding model takes into account 27 different variables in order to set individual adequacy targets for each school district that are based on the districts’

real costs, accepted best practices, and student demographics.

That data will be used to establish four funding “tiers,” which would ensure that additional funding goes to the state’s neediest districts. Tier 4 would encompass the districts that are financially the strongest, with spending already exceeding their adequacy target. Tier 1 would include struggling school districts that are spending far below their adequacy target.

The four-tiered system would also be used to protect the most vulnerable schools, ending the regressive nature of “proration.” Proration is the result of the state’s past practice of cutting school funding. Under proration, the districts with the most need often saw the most significant budget cuts.

Additionally, all school districts would be protected through a “holdharmless” provision, which during the first year would be based on the amount the district received during the 2016-2017 school year. In the second year and each year thereafter, the hold-harmless would be tied to the school’s actual student population to better reflect need, and funding would be based on the amount a district received per student in FY2017.

The legislation also repeals the controversial Chicago block grant and ensures equitable funding for charter schools.

In order to ensure consistent review of the state’s school funding, the legislation establishes a panel to review the new formula every three years. This would allow lawmakers to not only see how funding is being allocated, but better understand the outcomes that can be achieved for

• Dispose of electronics securely: Wiping data isn’t enough.

When disposing of old electronics, look for facilities that shred hard drives, disks and memory cards.

There will be clear data on the results of decisions to spend more or less money in Illinois schools, and information on how those budgetary decisions will impact in-class learning. Additionally, taxpayers will have a better idea of how much funding their schools need, in terms of both state and local revenues.

An accompanying legislative measure would provide substantial mandate relief to all school districts, establishing statewide various management tools that are currently granted only to Chicago Public Schools.

These tools include cutting costprohibitive bureaucratic red tape involved in third-party contracting; flexibility on scheduling of physical education, and allowing studentathletes to replace P.E. hours with additional classes or study halls; and permitting citizens to discharge certain unfunded mandates from their districts via referendum.

As a package, the bills eliminate the controversial Chicago Block Grant while offering pension parity to Chicago Public Schools, creating a single, uniform funding system for every school district in Illinois. Both education reform measures would be tied to pension reform legislation (SB 2172/SB 2173) that has been filed in the Senate.

Legislation pending in the Senate to ease rural teacher shortage In response to a teacher shortage impacting school districts in many of Illinois’ rural communities, legislation pending in the Senate would help these rural school districts struggling to attract good teachers choose from a much larger pool of applicants.

Acknowledging that a mastery of standardized testing doesn’t necessarily translate into good teachers in Illinois classrooms, Senate Bill 1123 would add an additional avenue for students to receive their teaching license—by achieving a minimum grade point average of 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale in the core education curriculum classes at the universities they attend.

Currently, students seeking a career in teaching must score at least 22 on their ACT test or 1110 on their SAT test, or pass the Academic Proficiency (TAP)/Basic Skills test in order to receive their teaching licenses.

A 2016 report from Teachers of Tomorrow found Illinois’ schools have some of the highest levels of unfilled teaching positions in the nation, to the tune of 6,381. https://www.teachersoftomorrow. org/blog/insights/teacher-shortage

State police step up efforts to fight hate crimes Illinois is seeking to more aggressively combat hate crimes by prioritizing training of law enforcement on how to better identify, investigate and prosecute these types of crimes.

Though the General Assembly has been proactive about passing laws targeting hate crimes, law enforcement officials must have an awareness and understanding of these laws in order to identify and pursue perpetrators of hate crimes.

The Illinois State Police (ISP) will be working with the Anti-Defamation League to create a new curriculum for ISP cadets, which will enable the state’s law enforcement to better recognize and investigate hate crimes so they can bring criminals to justice.

The focus and purpose of this training will strengthen the knowl-

edge and skills of officers by providing up-to-date information and strategies for identifying, investigating, and prosecuting hate crimes. It will also provide officers with ideas on how to work more effectively to change community norms that foster tolerance of and indifference toward hate crimes.

State offers help as April 18 deadline to file tax returns looms With less than a week left to file federal and state income tax returns, the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) is reminding taxpayers to file as soon as they can.

For individuals who have yet to file their 2016 tax returns, MyTax Illinois, IDOR’s free online account management program, is now accepting Individual Income Tax returns. Taxpayers can file their Form IL-1040 using MyTax Illinois. Individuals may also utilize MyTax Illinois to make payments; check the status of their Illinois Individual Income Tax refund using Where’s My Refund?; and look up their IL-PIN, estimated tax payments, and 1099G amounts. Filing Illinois income taxes electronically and electing direct deposit is still the fastest way to receive a refund.

The Belvidere Park District is currently hiring for a fulltime Park Foreman. This is an hourly, non-exempt position that reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Operations. The starting salary range for this position is $40,000-$45,000 per year. This position also includes an excellent benefits package.

The Parks Foreman is responsible for supervising, scheduling and assigning work to be performed for all Park District grounds maintenance staff. In addition, this position is also responsible for administering and performing all aspects of grounds maintenance duties for Parks Department.

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.

• Associates degree in Parks and Recreation or closely related field or equivalent vocational/technical training required.

• Two (2) to Five (5) years of direct experience in work related to park maintenance, at least two (2) of which was in a supervisory role.

• Or, any equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

• Valid Illinois Class A driver’s license (or obtain within 3 months) and good driving record are required.

• Must possess or be able to obtain within six (6) months an Illinois Pesticide Applicators License and a Certified Playground Safety Inspector License.

Detasseling starts in early July and runs for approximately three weeks. Pay varies depending on age and experience from $9.50-$10.50 per hour. The bus leaves at 6 a.m. from the Byron High School parking lot. In order to detassel, you must be 13 years old by July 1.
