Celebrate Earth Day! F
By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
riday, April 22, marks the international celebration of Earth Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about protecting the environment. The first Earth Day rallies were held in 1970 in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and on college campuses across the nation. In 1976, the Earth Society Foundation established that the purpose of Earth Day is to, “Conduct educational programs and seminars and promote research and investigation throughout the world…” Because of this awareness, the U.S. Government has enacted a number of environmental acts such as the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act, Toxic Substance Control and the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act.
This year, U.S. President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping will sign the Paris Climate Agreement on Earth Day. This agreement lays the groundwork to try to keep global temperatures from rising and control greenhouse gas emissions. The hope is that 55 countries which account for 55% of global emissions will join as well. Earth Day events in McHenry County begin with a collaboration between the McHenry County Conservation District and the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County. These two organizations are joining to host Earth Day Celebration 2016 at the Prairieview Education Center at 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake. It will be held from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm, both indoors and outdoors and will be held rain or shine. Live music by Ken Lonnquist with Dave Adler will be performed at 11:30
am and 2:00 pm. The event offers guided nature hikes, games, crafts, puppet shows and a carpool raffle for a free picnic shelter reservation at the park. Over 20 Environmental Exhibitors will be on site along with Food and Beverage vendors. These will include Toasty Cheese and Pop’s Premier Kettle Corn. Or you can bring your own “No waste” picnic lunch. The Environmental Defenders will be accepting household recycling items such as: electronics – computers and accessories, TVs, stereos, small appliances, polystyrene, packing peanuts and re-usable bubble wrap, Christmas lights, fluorescent tubes, VHS tapes, CDs, cassettes and household batteries. Donations are requested for large TVs and monitors to offset recycling costs - $.50 per pound (not to exceed $30.00). [They will not be accepting smoke detectors, medical devices, console TVs, car batteries or paint cans at this event.]
For vigorously active people, the two organizations are sponsoring the 5k EcoRun beginning at 10:00 am also. Check-in is from 8:15 until 9:30 am. Free parking is at the Faith Community United Church of Christ, 2023 IL Route 176, Crystal Lake. There are shuttle rides to the starting area. The race is a chip timed certified event. Proceeds will benefit the McHenry County Conservation District, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and the Woodstock Morning Rotary Foundation. Both recreational and competitive runners are welcome. Please register for the race before April 20. You can register online at www.Rotaryecorun.org. A $25 fee includes a t-shirt. Information about these events can be located online at www.mccdistrict. org and www.mcdef.org. Earth Day information and history can be found at www.earthday.org.
Worry free weekend getaway By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
“A B & B owner has a mission to provide service and sanctuary so that you can enjoy the moment,” states Merida Johns of the Bundling Board Inn in Woodstock, Illinois. With an attitude like that, you know that you will be well taken care of while you are visiting. No chores or errands. No cooking or cleaning. Just relaxation and fun. The Bundling Board is located at 220 E. South Street, just three blocks from the historic Woodstock Square. Merida and Russell Johns have been running the B & B for 13 years. They offer a well stocked, free guest refrigerator with drinks and a filled cookie crock in the kitchen. Breakfast might consist of made-fromscratch blueberry pancakes with a dollop of sour cream and homemade blueberry sauce, fresh mango smoothies and a soufflé with sausage and cheese. “A B & B is sort of like an extended home for people to come back to. It’s a personalized, caring experience,” Merida says. She keeps fresh flowers in each room, irons all the sheets and offers a turn-down service. The Bundling Board offers an intimate Victorian atmosphere with fine antique fur-
nishings. You can sit on the front porch and stroll through tree-lined streets. You can visit quaint shops, indulge in dinner and a concert at the Woodstock Opera House or play a round of golf just a short distance away. The Bundling Board offers private bathrooms, central heat and air conditioning and is equipped with a sprinkler system. It has passed the rigorous quality controls of the Illinois Bed and Breakfast Association. Many of the Bundling Board guests return annually, whenever they are in the Woodstock area. The Johns have hosted many of the same guests for the last 13 years. The Bundling Board Inn has been featured on television’s “Wild Chicago” on the “Wild Illinois Road Trip” episodes.
