n March 5, 2016, the Hemmen’s Cultural Center in Elgin hosts the Applause Dance Competition. The Goin’ Solo Dance Teama wins the Platinum Award for their performance of ‘Chandelier’ (the video) by Sia. Choreographed by Rio Ottolino, this event is the team’s first performance in front of a live audience. Rio also brought home the High Gold award for her solo performance of ‘California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and the Papas. “There is an old quote that says to ‘dance like no one is watching.’ I say, ‘not to dance like no one is watching, but to dance like everyone is watching.’ When I dance and choreograph, I want the dance to mean something to the audience,” Rio says. “I don’t just want to be another studio in a playbook.” “I am also very excited to have been invited to perform at the upcoming Harvard Business and Community Expo on April 9. We will be performing there around noon and then again at 1:30. My team will be joining me along
Double the Fun with the Illinois Railway Museum By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
UNION — The Illinois Railway Museum is beginning its 2016 season with not just one but two events on Sunday, April 3. Firstly, it is Opening Day at the IRM with hours from 10:30 am until 5:00 pm. The museum will be open weekends in April. It will be open seven days a week beginning Mother’s Day, May 8. It will be open daily until the end of September, then open on weekends only through October. A full schedule of events listing dates when electric cars, steam trains, diesels and trolleys will be running is available online at www.irm.org. Special events such as the 26th Annual Vintage Transport Extravaganza (August 7) and A Day Out With Thomas (August 13 & 14, 20 & 21 and more can also be found on this site. Secondly on April 3, you can join the members of IRM in a train straight out of the ‘70s as we tour the Chicago Transit Authority’s “L” lines. We’ll ride CTA’s historically painted, 2400 series cars on our excursion which will cover the north, south, west and northwest sides of the city.
The cars used for this expedition were retired from regular passenger service on October 31, 2014, after 38 years of service. We will be riding in cars which have been restored to their original Bicentennial-inspired livery. As an added treat, a special prize will be awarded to someone who dresses in 1970s fashions. Pull out your elephant bells and disco duds, use hairspray for that authentic “big hair” look and enjoy a blast from the past. Fare will be $50.00 per person and only 140 advance tickets will be sold. If any tickets are available on the day of the excursion, the price will be $55.00. The train will leave at 8:45 am from the Dempster-Skokie terminal on the Skokie Swift/Yellow Line. It will return at about 6:00 pm following an entire day of sightseeing by train. This historical jump backwards in time is a fundraiser to support preservation and restoration of the Illinois Railway Museum’s CTA transit collection. Tickets can be purchased online at www. irm.org The Illinois Railway Museum is located at 7000 Olson Road, Union, Illinois, 60180.
