New band, orchestra, and STEM programs coming to elementary schools Huntley District 158 is excited to announce two new initiatives coming to our elementary schools that will expand the horizons of our students in the music and STEM fields.

Band and Orchestra to Be Offered in 5th Grade Beginning in the 2019-20 school year we will offer band and orchestra to our 5th-grade students. Currently these programs begin in 6th grade, and we are pleased to make these excellent opportunities available to students beginning in elementary school.

Not only will this move positively

impact our elementary students, but it also will bring Huntley 158 in line with other districts that offer these programs.

In addition, the move better supports the vibrant fine arts programming already in place at the secondary level.

New STEM-focused Elementary Specials Offering In addition, we are pleased to introduce plans for a new STEM-based offering for our elementary students that will help prepare them for the careers of the future. Chemung early 1900s This early 1900’s photograph is Route 173 in Chemung. The two buildings pictured are a blacksmith shop & Ambler’s General Store (with the porch). Charles E. Ambler was born in Chicago in 1872, arrived in Chemung in 1906, and lived there for 47 years. He was the proprietor of a general store. Ambler first formed a partnership with Jim Westerman and Clinton Carr to establish the business and later became the sole owner. The general store sold feed, clothes, shoes, tools, hardware and toys. The store burned to the ground

in the late 1940s. Chemung was established as a town in 1844. At its height of development it had four dry goods stores, a drugstore, a blacksmith and a wagon shop. When the railroad moved its base of operations to Harvard, the town’s rapid growth came to an end. The Ambler store also served as the post office. Charles Ambler was postmaster from 1907 to 1942. When the post office closed in 1943, Ambler mailed a postcard to himself. It read “This is the last piece of mail postmarked at this office.”

Sheriff’s Office investigates a fatal singlevehicle crash

A 62-year-old Woodstock man has died as the result of a single vehicle crash that occurred on Saturday afternoon in the 10100 block of Illinois Route 120 near the south intersection of Thompson Road, in unincorporated Woodstock.

On March 9, 2019 at 2:28 p.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded to a single vehicle crash involving a 2016 Subaru Forester that had crashed into two trees on Illinois Route 120 near the intersection of Thompson Road.

On-scene investigation indicated that the Subaru had been traveling northbound on Illinois Route 120.

For unknown reasons the Subaru crossed over the southbound lane of travel and exited the roadway to the west striking a guardrail. The Subaru then crossed back over all lanes of travel and exited the roadway to the east, striking the trees.

The driver of the Subaru was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. The driver was seat belted at the time of crash and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation continues by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

The National Weather Service and state and local emergency management officials strongly encourage people to have a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All Hazards Weather Radio with battery backup.

These radios can be programmed to receive alerts for specified counties to keep you and your family apprised of impending weather and post-event information for all types of hazards including natural (earthquakes), environmental (chemical spills) and public safety hazards (AMBER alerts). When an alert is issued for the programmed area, the device will sound a warning alarm tone followed by the essential information.

“Having a weather alert radio in your home can save your life,” said Acting Director Alicia TateNadeau. “Much like a smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector, these devices can alert you while you are sleeping in order to give you the time you need to get your family to safety.”

In this day and age of families constantly on the go, it is also critical for people to have multiple ways to receive notifications and updated information about severe weather warnings. FEMA offers a FREE mobile app that provides fast and reliable weather alerts from the National Weather Service (NWS). The app can be tailored to offer alerts for up to five different locations nationwide. The mobile app can also help you locate open shelters and disaster resource centers near you in the event of an emergency.

Vehicle collision injures three Three persons were injured, one critically, in a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon at the intersection of Alden Road and Thayer Road, in unincorporated Alden Township.

The injured include an 80-yearold Harvard woman, listed in critical condition; a 58-year-old Harvard man; and a 55-year-old McHenry woman.

At 3:44 p.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, McHenry County Conservation Police, Harvard Fire Protection District, Flight for Life and the Hebron Fire Department, responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Alden Road and Thayer Road.

On-scene investigation indicated that a 2010 Chevrolet HHR was traveling westbound on Thayer Road and failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection with Alden Road. A

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander traveling southbound on Alden Road struck the Chevrolet in the southbound lane of travel.

The driver of the Chevrolet, the 80-year-old female, was transported

by Flight for Life to Javon Bea Hospital Riverside in Rockford. The passenger in the Chevrolet, 58-yearold man, was transported by Hebron Fire/Rescue to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the Mitsubishi was transported by Harvard Fire Protection District to Harvard Mercy Hospital with minor injuries. Seatbelts were worn at the time of crash and airbag deployments were noted for all occupants. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation continues by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is working with the family to establish a formal way for everyone to show their support. We will pause our efforts on Tuesday and Wednesday to honor and pay our respects to our fallen brother, Deputy Jacob “Jake” Keltner.

As more information become available, it will be shared with the public.

Will you still respect me when you know what I sing to?

I am in my 50s now, a respected professional. I work with clients and students, and teach and speak all across the country and beyond, people who value my insight and trust my deep intuition, expertise, and ability to scope big picture and distill small details.

And I wonder what they would think if they could see me in my home office when Air Supply comes on.

Not any Air Supply. Just the song “Making Love Out of Nothing At All.” When those opening piano notes and first lines waft into my ear drums, I instantly pronounce to myself: “Break Time!”

Up off my chair, I go crank the volume. I close my eyes and sway. I belt it out – in my lip sync version.

I know just how to whisper. And I know just how to cry. Ahh, sing it with me. The song holds no meaningful memory for me, just a power ballad from my youth that still grabs me today. I luxuriate in big sweeping production numbers.

My song loves are many and varied, but this one gets me every time. This epic five-minute number just came on my Amazon music right now and I was helpless to resist the pull. I’m sure the squirrels

out my window enjoyed my moving performance.

And I’m never gonna tell you everything I gotta tell you, but I know I gotta give it a try.

Different days bring different music, and on some days, none at all. Today, the tunes are on, and with Air Supply, I’m all in. As a good writer does, I applied a little “research” and played the song a few more times.

When I was young, my music listening was often alone in my bedroom, my turntable and me. My rendition was not tainted by videos.

Even though MTV arrived in 1981, my dad did not pay for cable TV. My imagination was better than a lot of videos anyway. I’ll do it my way, thank you very much.

Right now I just googled and watched a live performance of Air Supply singing this song. No dramatic flair. Sigh. Perhaps they need me coaching them on how to swing that arm into the air. A little more feeling, fellas.

Pump the fist. Scrunch the brow.

Squeeze the eyes tight. Then stand

up straight. Look into the camera.

Bring it home.

Well, my break time, and my emoting, is just about over.

The perfect spouse doesn’t exist

After spending the last three decades with my husband, I’ve learned marriage isn’t what I thought it would be. In some ways it is harder. In myriad ways it exceeds my expectations. And like a fine wine, it really does get better with age. Take heed, newlyweds!

Together we raised four kids, three of them sons. As I watch them grow into men, I hope we’ve provided them with the insight, patience and fortitude needed to create a successful marriage some day. And if I were to give them advice about marriage (not that I’d ever think of giving them advice) here’s what I might say: In many ways, we live in a “What can you do for me?” society. This doesn’t work for marriage or relationships in general. John F. Kennedy once famously said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what

you can do for your country.”

When looking for a future life partner, replace the word country with marriage: Ask not what marriage can do for you, ask what you can do for the marriage.

By being together, how can you make each other better than when you were alone?

Dating, at its outset, is a lot about first impressions and appearances. Marriage is about lasting impressions and loving someone from the inside out.

Look for someone whose interior is as beautiful as their exterior.

Likewise, be willing to offer the same.

Be a person who compliments freely and criticizes rarely. Studies show that you need to give at least five compliments for every one criticism to have a positive relationship. Everyone needs to hear good things about who they

are or what they do, especially from their spouse.

Speak highly of your chosen one. It speaks highly of you.

Sometimes it’s best to bite your tongue. Not literally, but you don’t have to say everything that comes to mind. If in doubt, don’t say it. You can always voice your opinion at a later time if needed.

Laugh together.

Always be honest, but never brutally honest.

Talk about your day. Every day.

The goal is unattainable, but it puts your perspective in the right place: on your significant other and not you. You don’t get married so another person can make you happy. It’s vice versa.

Basically, that means loving unselfishly, which isn’t easy to do.

But the things in life that are the most meaningful and worthwhile aren’t ever easy.

That’s part of what makes them so valuable – and worth doing.

A small group from The Environmental Defenders had a unique opportunity to participate in a “coffee cupping” organized by Defenders’ business member Conscious Cup Coffee Roasters in Crystal Lake. Lake Shore House Resort 1907

(Left) From the Postcard Collection: Lake Shore House Resort, Crystal Lake. Postmark 1907. The Lake Shore House was built in 1900 by W.E. Prickett and Son on the north shore of Crystal Lake. It was large enough to accommodate 45 guests who enjoyed the hotel’s roomy balconies and verandas. Boats were free to their guests as well as tennis courts and croquet at the back of the hotel. Near the lake was the Prickett Spring. The hotel provided a free bathhouse for ladies and children and was also headquarters for fishing parities. In 1982, now known as the Beach House Hotel, it closed due to a fire and the building was later razed.

GasBuddy reveals U.S. cities with the most aggressive drivers Honking, squeaking brakes and bumper-to-bumper traffic are common problems in many of America’s congested cities.

Frustrated drivers can get agitated quickly, and their aggressive driving habits like speeding, rapid acceleration and braking can lower gas mileage by as much as 40 percent, costing them as much as $477 per year in additional fuel consumption.

GasBuddy, the only smartphone app connecting drivers with their Perfect Pit Stop, today reveals the major metropolitan areas in the United States with the most aggressive drivers, causing them to pay more for gasoline by making more frequent trips to the pump.

GasBuddy compiled data from its Drives feature in the GasBuddy app, examining the top 30 metropolitan areas by population as defined by the United States Census Bureau from Nov. - Feb. 2019, noting the frequency of an aggressive event while driving, whether it be speeding, hard braking or accelerating.

Top 10 cities with the most aggressive drivers 1. Los Angeles 2. Philadelphia 3. Sacramento, Calif.

4. Atlanta 5. San Francisco 6. San Diego 7. Orlando, Fla. 8. Detroit 9. Austin, Texas 10. Las Vegas Los Angeles consistently tops the list of having some of the most expensive gas prices in the nation, currently averaging $3.35 per gallon. Combined with traffic and congestion, the GasBuddy Aggressive

Driving study reveals that the way Los Angeles motorists are driving is also contributing to a larger gasoline budget. And it doesn’t stop with Los Angeles: four of the top 10 cities with the most aggressive drivers are in California, including Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego.

“Frustration while driving in densely populated cities with high levels of congestion leads motorists to drive more aggressively and with more urgency. Interestingly, these are areas that typically see some of the highest gas prices in their respective states,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“With drivers in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Sacramento and Atlanta being 20 percent more aggressive than the average driver in America, it’s particularly important for commuters and rideshare drivers in these areas to work on shedding their lead foot and relax more to keep money from flying out the window each time they hit the road.”

Last year GasBuddy’s Aggressive Driving Study examined the states with the most aggressive drivers.

Seven of the top 10 cities with the most aggressive drivers from this year’s study are within the top 10 states with the most aggressive drivers, including California, Georgia, Texas and Florida.

Additional findings include: Frustrating Fridays: Motorists are 1.2x more likely to encounter aggressive driving on Friday than on Wednesday. The most aggressive day on the road is Friday, with 14 percent more aggressive driving events occurring compared to the

Ford School 1922

This 1922 photograph shows Ford school, originally located at the site of today’s Ford School Park in Lake in the Hills. Over 65 years ago Ford school (built 1886) was about to be torn down to make room for new community development (Lake in the Hills). The building was saved and moved 3 blocks up Algonquin Road to farm property. Eventually it served as an office building for a landscape nursery. In 2013 the Lake in the Hills Historical Society moved the school back to its original location, now Ford School Park. Ford School District #52 occupied several sections of land northwest of the village of Algonquin. The original Ford school was a log structure built in 1844 and replaced in 1862. Moving day

I had to laugh on Saturday as we were helping our son and his family move from their old house on the west side to their new place on the east side of Beloit. They had everything organized nicely with lots of help and a big enclosed truck to load all of their belongings into.

My wife and I arrived around 10 in the morning at the old house and were immediately sent over to the new house so she could help paint, and I could help with the unloading of the first truckload.

It’s a little unusual to get the house ready on the same day that you are moving stuff in, but that was the only way they could do it as the closings for the sale and purchase of the homes were on the same day.

So everyone was busy removing wallpaper, painting walls, cleaning cupboards, moving furniture and boxes from the truck into the new house, and setting up beds in the rooms where the painting was done.

Our daughter-in-law’s parents were here from Texas as well, helping to get the new house ready. They had actually spent Friday evening in the new house ripping up old carpet, and removing all the staples from the beautiful hardwood floors that were now exposed. gears and sprockets all turning in rhythm to achieve the final outcome.

Of course there were some perks along the way. At one point before lunch, one of the wives brought a huge platter of steaming hot homemade glazed donuts that we all devoured with great zeal.

After we had loaded the second large truckload, my sonin-law and I stopped and picked up 10 large pizzas at Papa Johns. Our truck was full of the aroma of a fine pizza parlor as we brought them back with us.

Everyone stood and ate pizza to our heart’s content and then it was back to work again.

The second truck was unloaded and my daughter-inlaw’s Dad and I got ready to run to Menards to pick up a water line and some connectors for the refrigerator. This is where we got our laugh. Out in front of the house was a low ridge of frozen snow next to the street and since the driveway was blocked, I told him to just drive over it with his four-wheel drive pickup, and we would be on our way.

I forgot one thing, he lives in Texas and in Texas they don’t get much snow. As he began to climb the snow, he let up on the accelerator, and we began to sink. Soon we were hung up on the snow bank with all four wheels spinning.

All winter I have been maneuvering my four-wheel drive pickup through huge drifts of snow and over icy roads and paths all over the farm, and I forgot that it takes a little practice to execute the art of driving in and through the snow.

He was good-natured about it and after we dug the snow out from under the truck with a shovel and poured a little rock salt under the tires, he backed up a couple feet, and then gunned it right through the drift.

We laughed and laughed as we drove over to the store.

The entire day reminded me of how a good school, workplace or church should work together in unity. It all starts with humility.

Ephesians 4:2-3 read like this; be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

The Bible gives us some great practical advice for working together, and it was in full effect on Saturday.

The hardware store’s stock of Jewel stoves is advertised in this photo. This hardware store was established in 1862 by Lewis Bower. In 1867 C.E. Hunt of Hunt, Helm, Ferris & Co. (later Starline) was employed as a clerk in 1872, Hunt, together with N.B. Helm, bought out the business and renamed it Hunt & Helm. In 1884 A.C. Manley of Hebron entered their employ. By 1888 the business was renamed again as Hunt, Helm & Manley. Two years later the name became Manley Bros. & Co. The hardware store carried a very complete stock comprising of light and heavy hardware, sporting goods, farm machinery, heating and plumbing, harnesses, and they were agents for Rambler, Overland, E-M-F, Flanders and Brush automobiles. After Manley’s, the hardware store exchanged hands several times and later became Roach’s Hardware.
