Rotary to present Western Dinner-Auction

The Dawnbreakers put miles on everyone’s face at the annual western dinner/dances.

The 28th Annual Western DinnerAuction will hosted by the Rotary Club of Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers on Saturday, March 4, at 5:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Crystal Lake. This year, the auction will include dinner, silent and live auctions, a “Show Me the Money” $10,000 cash raffle, 50/50 cash raffles, and a mechanical bull.

Over the course of 28 years, the Dawnbreakers have donated over $1.5 million to charity, both locally and globally through the Rotary International initiatives, from money raised at the auction.

There will be hundreds of auction items. Those interested in attending can view auction items, purchase tickets, and register for night of bidding on the Auction Website at Bidding for Good. It’s that time of year again. The Festival of the Sugar Maples is coming to Marengo on March 4-5 and 11-12.

From 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. visitors are welcome to come and learn the history of Coral Woods Conservation Area and how maple syrup was made hundreds of years ago.

You can compare it to how maple syrup is made today and discover the similarities and differences. You will find

out how maple sap is produced by the trees, how it is collected, and visit the evaporator house to see how the syrup is made from the sap.

You will be allowed to taste the syrup that has been made from the stately maple trees in the conservation area.

The Coral Woods Conservation Area is located at 7400 Somerset Dr., Marengo.

There are certain things in life that prudent, forward-thinking people avoid. Like putting their tongue on a frozen metal fence, or being outnumbered by their kids. Certain actions just aren’t wise and some can even get you into trouble. These are things, that if you are thinking logically, you will never do. For instance, you should never…

Litter.

Eat crackers in bed.

Smoke in bed – or anywhere for that matter.

Overflow the bathtub. Overflow the toilet (even worse).

Show up late to work. Show up late to a movie. Show up late. It’s rude.

You should never be rude. At least not on purpose.

Text while driving.

Gossip. (Hard, I know.)

Fall asleep at work. (Dumb.)

Fall asleep on a railroad track.

(Dumb and dangerous.)

Spend more than you earn.

You should never…

(Squander money.)

Squander time. Squander opportunity. Squander relationships.

Squander.

Make vague and ambiguous posts on social media, which prompt people to ask, “What’s wrong?”

Follow the crowd, unless it’s going in the direction you want to go.

Bring a cat to a dog park.

Forget to buy the cat treats.

Brag. Even about your kids – or your cat.

Forget your anniversary.

Wear a royal blue shirt when shopping at Walmart.

Wear a red shirt when shopping at Target.

Run a red light.

Argue with a police officer.

Disagree with your cat.

Jump to conclusions.

Jump out of an airplane (unless you have a parachute).

Tag someone in an unflattering photo.

Be purposely hurtful.

Ignore an opportunity to be kind.

Wear a tutu to a job interview (unless you are a ballerina).

Think life is fair.

Eat sand.

Leave the ice cream out on the counter.

Drink milk from the carton (unless you have no friends and live alone).

Prioritize things over people.

Elevate yourself above others.

Play poker with a guy (or gal) who is wearing mirrored sunglasses.

Underestimate the power, stamina and energy of a parent.

Underestimate the love of a parent.

Underestimate yourself.

There are more. Dozens even.

But I’ll stop here. (You always want to quit leaving them wanting more.)

I never imagined I would be gaga for Gaga but I have joined the legions of fans

When Lady Gaga first hit the scene, she didn’t move me. The young gals at my exercise class (I was a regular back then) revered her. I chalked her up to a Madonna-wannabe and didn’t like her music. I thought she was The Material Girl for the new generation, someone who would carry the torch of shock tactics.

She wanted attention for a reason and now I respect her more than Lady Madonna. Gaga, or Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta as I like to call her, has earned her

keep. She’s a hard worker and not just in it for the press, like I once thought. She has substance under that meat dress of hers.

That outfit was from 2010. She’s come a long way, baby. (Did you know the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum asked for her dress?

They preserved the meat. A dress of meat will rot, but the dress is now beef jerky (I am not making this up) and no one knows its life span.)

She still can wear outfits that rival Cher in the day, but most of

her red carpet appearances now are a throwback to old Hollywood glamour and Ryan Seacrest has dubbed her as presence as regal.

Gaga showed she’s queen at the Super Bowl for sure. Her show-

manship brought down the house (and the internet). Her halftime show was the second largest draw in Super Bowl history. (Katy Perry brought in more viewers in 2015.)

Gaga can wow a crowd just as much by simply belting out a tune.

Her partnership with Tony Bennett proved that. That gal has pipes.

And chutzpah.

She is devoted to her work, and it’s not just music. Gaga is an actress too. She nabbed the 2016 Golden Globe for Best Actress for American Horror Story. But what

won me over is her unending encouragement for the underdog. A telling interview with Oprah Winfrey from a few years ago made O a believer too. O stated that Gaga’s energy was a force for good and palpable.

Gaga and her mama created the Born This Way Foundation. They “empower youth and inspire bravery.” Gaga is on a spreading kindness mission and takes it to the streets and schools giving out gifts and hugs and encouragement. The foundation also focuses on mental wellness and positive school climate.

The mission: “Born This Way Foundation is committed to supporting the wellness of young people and empowering them to create a kinder and braver world. We achieve this by shining a light on real people, quality research, and authentic partnerships.”

Gaga and team partners with other nonprofits. One of my clients, a clinical psychologist and a member of the Dove Self-Esteem board (love those ads!) is writing a book on Kindness and I hope they team up. This is from Gaga’s site: “We believe empowering people to be kind is the key to building a more accepting and loving world.

We understand that the challenges and opportunities we face are important and require collaboration from a diverse group of partners.

We focus on supporting local and national organizations in their work to increase youth wellness and encourage young people to build a kinder and braver world.”

A more accepting and loving world, that is the energy Gaga brings, and to that end, I am glad for her success. She is using her power for good. That is the legacy she will leave, a good example for us all to emulate, even if we don’t wear wild outfits and can’t carry a tune.

Switchback comes to the Raue Center

On March 5, 7-9 p.m. you can see Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack of the duo Switchback at the Raue Center for the Arts. They have been playing their brand of eclectic Celtic and Americana music at sold-out concert halls, performing arts centers and festivals around the world for over twenty years. Switchback concerts feature a mix of Irish music and original songs from their catalog of over 300 tunes.

Switchback plays an exciting mix of mandolin, guitar, and bass and their harmonies have won them comparisons to famous duos, such as the Louvin Brothers, the Everly Brothers, and Simon and Garfunkel.

Music Connection Magazine said of Switchback: The words American Roots & Celtic Soul only begin to describe this unusual act, whose vocal prowess is as pure as it is unique and there is no denying the stunning vocal blends that are achieved by this duo.

Their Celtic music is authentically Irish, drawing praise from such traditional players as

A new report highlights how the rules governing the Illinois House of Representatives concentrate more power in one person than any other legislature in the country.

Illinois Policy Institute Vice President of Policy Ted Dabrowski said researchers scoured the legislatures in all the other states and found the rules crafted over three decades by Illinois Speaker Michael Madigan are a big outlier. “[The rules allow] him to not only choose who votes and when people vote, but whether a bill even makes it to a vote in the first place,” he said. “It’s an amazing amount of power.”

According to Dabrowski, Madigan has the power to kill legislation before there is even a vote and that is a detriment to taxpayers wanting a change to the status quo.

“Even if there’s something that they want — like property tax protection or a better economy with better incentives for businesses to come here, a strong economy — Madigan can just kill those things,” Dabrowski said.

The report also found that the rules give the speaker complete authority to change committee assignments and chair positions, which affect a lawmaker’s pay. Chair positions come with a $10,000 stipend and Illinois is one of only nine states to offer extra compensation for such positions.

Illinois Campaign for Political Reform (ICPR) Executive Director Sarah Brune said the rules should always be up for discussion.

“ICPR is always in favor of opening up rules,” she said. “It shouldn’t be assumed that simply because the rules are the way they are, it should stay that way.”

Meanwhile, state senators approved a resolution to impose term limits of five two-year terms on the positions of Senate President and minority leader.

Current Minority Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, said they intend to strengthen this by introducing a constitutional amendment that would put term limits on legislative leaders in both chambers.
