Illinois State Scholars, top SAT scorers honored by District 200 Board The Woodstock Community Unit School District 200 Board of Education recently honored 23 Woodstock High School seniors who are recognized as Illinois State Scholars for 2018.

Students were given certificates and congratulated by Superintendent Mike Moan, Board President Carl Gilmore and the rest of the board for their outstanding accomplishments at the Board’s Jan. 9 meeting.

The honor is awarded annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (IASC) which is the state’s central provider of college aid. Only the top 10 percent of seniors from the nearly 800 high schools in Illinois qualified for this distinction which is based on a combination of SAT or ACT exam scores, academic performance, and class rank at the end of the junior year.

“We’re extremely proud of the efforts of these outstanding students and congratulate their parents and families for partnering with us to help them achieve their academic goals,” Moan said. Being named a State Scholar is a valuable honor for college admission and scholarship applications. Congratulations to this year’s Illinois State Scholars for their outstanding academic accomplishment.

ored the top scorers on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) which is one of two standardized college entrance examinations used as a criterion for acceptance to colleges and universities. Last year more than 1.7 million students across the country

took the exam, including all Illinois high school juniors. Illinois students earned an average composite score of 1020, based on a scale ranging from 400-1600.

Sixteen Woodstock High School students exceeded that average con-

siderably by scoring 1300 or better on the exam. This accomplishment places them in the top 10% of all the students who took the test. Congratulations to these members of the Class of 2018 on this outstanding achievement.

Woodstock DARE officer named Officer of Year

Congratulations to DARE Officer Michael Gustis for being selected as the 2017 Woodstock Police Department’s “Officer of the Year” and nominee for the McHenry County Chief’s of Police Association’s “Officer of the Year.”

On Friday evening, Jan. 19,Woodstock Chief of Police John Lieb and Harvard Chief of Police Mark Krause presented him his award.

Officer Gustis has been with WPD since 2007 and has served as the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) and Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Officer since 2010.

Officer Gustis was chosen as its “Officer of the Year” because of his outstanding efforts and the positive impact he has made on thousands of young lives.

WPD would also like to congratulate the other law enforcement officers throughout McHenry County for their nominations for their agencies “Officer of the Year.”

McHenry County truly has the finest law enforcement professionals; second to none.

Centegra shares cold-busting tips that really work Most people fight off a cold in 7-10 days, and while there’s no cure for this common virus, you can feel better while you battle a cold with these five cold-busting tips: Get lots of rest: Your body needs to heal, and resting is the best way to ensure it can.

Drink plenty of fluids: Staying properly hydrated can help loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks such as coffee and pop, which can dehydrate you.

Consider over-the-counter medicine to help ease symptoms: Fight stuffiness with nasal drops and sprays. Relieve pain with acetaminophen (all ages), ibuprofen (anyone older than 6 months old) or aspirin (adults). Over-the-counter cold and cough medications can provide symptom relief for adults and children 5 and older. However, overuse and misuse of these medications can be harmful, so make sure you read the labels and take them only as directed. Never take multiple medicines that contain acetaminophen, a common active ingredient that can damage the liver at high doses, at the same time.

Add moisture to the air: Using a vaporizer or humidifier can add moisture to your environment, which may help loosen congestion.

Soothe a sore throat - try a

saltwater gargle. Mix 1/2 teaspoon salt into an 8-ounce glass of warm water, take 2-3 ounces and gargle for 30 seconds. Spit out saltwater and repeat until all the water is gone.

Try ice chips, sore throat sprays, lozenges or hard candy.

Because of the choking hazard, lozenges and hard candy are not recommended for children younger than 4.

Sip warm liquids, such as chicken soup, tea or warm apple juice. This traditional cold remedy can soothe a sore throat, keep you hydrated and might even ease congestion.

5 precautions to prevent spread of cold As always, the best way to prevent the spread of a cold and other viruses is to use common-sense precautions: Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands to prevent the spread of germs.

Stay away from people who are sick and stay home while you are sick.

Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Throw tissues in the trash after they have been used.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office investigates ‘swatting’ call The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a “Swatting” call that occurred in unincorporated McHenry late Tuesday evening and tied up approximately 15 sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Johnsburg Police Department for more than two hours.

“Swatting” is the act of deceiving emergency services into sending police to another person’s address, based on the false reporting of a serious emergency situation, such as a bomb threat, murder, hostage-taking, or other alleged incident. It is a criminal act that can put both responding personnel and innocent civilians in danger.

At 10:19 p.m., deputies responded to a residence in the 2800 block of N. Magellan Dr. in unincorporated McHenry after being notified by the North East Regional Communications Center (NERCOM) about a possible hostage situation.

While responding to the call, deputies were told that the male caller provided the name of a juvenile and an address. The caller stated that he was holding three people hostage with a firearm at that address.

The caller demanded a ransom, and said he would start shooting people, and then hung up.

Information was obtained that led deputies and police officers from Johnsburg Police Department to a make contact, at a different address, with the juvenile whose name had been provided. It was determined that he had not made the call to NERCOM. Deputies were able to make contact with the residents of the house on North Magellan Drive and it was determined that everyone was fine and there was no hostage situation. “’Swatting’ is not amusing and can have potentially fatal consequences,” said Sheriff Bill Prim.

“An unarmed man in Wichita, Kan., was shot and killed during a similar incident late last year. Meanwhile, while chasing a hoax, officers are unable to answer calls to real emergencies.”

McHenry hospital heart team completes first minimally invasive valve replacement in area Centegra offers TAVR procedure for people with aortic stenosis

On Tuesday, Jan. 23, a highly specialized team at Centegra Hospital-McHenry completed the first transcatheter aortic valve replacement in the McHenry County area.

TAVR is a minimally invasive treatment for patients with diseased heart valves who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe aortic stenosis.

“This is an advanced procedure that will change the lives of people who have diseased heart valves,” said Dr. Elizabeth Retzer, an interventional cardiologist at Centegra Physician Care who serves as medical director for the catheterization laboratory and TAVR for Centegra Hospital-McHenry. “Our heart team in McHenry is thrilled to be able to deliver this life-saving

treatment to our high-risk heart patients.”

People who have aortic stenosis are not pumping blood throughout their bodies effectively. During TAVR, the cardiac team makes a small puncture in the patient’s groin and uses small tubes called catheters and tiny instruments to replace a patient’s aortic valve, making it easier for their heart to pump blood. Retzer and Dr. Thomas J. Hinkamp, an independent cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon on the medical staff at Centegra, led the heart team during Tuesday’s procedure.

“Centegra Health System is committed to providing advanced cardiac procedures so our patients get the care they need, close to home,” said Rachel Sebastian, president of Centegra Hospital-McHenry. “This minimally invasive procedure reflects our team’s ability to provide the highest level of care right here in McHenry County.”

Sheriff’s Office investigating second fatal traffic accident A 44-year-old Woodstock woman was killed and two other persons hospitalized following a two-vehicle traffic accident in unincorporated Hebron in the very early hours of Thursday, the second fatal crash in McHenry County within a three-hour period.

At 12:17 a.m., police and fire units responded to the scene of the crash in the 9800 block of U.S. Route 173 in unincorporated Hebron Township. Rescue units represented included Hebron Alden Greenwood Township Fire Protection District; Wonder Lake Fire Protection District; Richmond Fire Protection District; Spring Grove Fire Protection District; Mercy MD1; and Flight for Life.

The preliminary investigation indicated that a 2004 Mazda Tribute driven by a 20-year-old Woodstock woman was traveling westbound on

U.S. Route 173. A 2010 Dodge Journey, driven by a 56- year-old Twin Lakes woman, was eastbound on U.S. Route 173. For unknown reasons the Mazda traveled into the eastbound lane of traffic, where it collided with the Dodge.

The front seat passenger of the Mazda was transported to Mercy Hospital in Harvard where she was pronounced dead. The drivers of both vehicles were transported by ambulance to Centegra Hospitals in McHenry, where they remain in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Airbags deployed in both vehicles.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

He remains in custody at this time.

A court date was set for Jan. 26, 9 a.m. with a bond set at $14,300.

The public is reminded that an arrest is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Rockford woman killed in Union car accident

A 27-year-old Rockford woman was killed and a 24-year-old Marengo man injured in a two-vehicle traffic crash in unincorporated Union.

At 9:39 p.m., on Jan. 17, members of the Marengo and Union Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of a crash in the 17000 block of US Route 176.

The preliminary investigation indicated that a 2005 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Route 176 veered for unknown reasons into the oncoming lane of traffic, where it collided with an eastbound 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep was transported by Marengo Rescue to Centegra Huntley Hospital. He was later transport-

ed to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the traffic crash. Cell phone use is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

Hanover Park man found guilty of armed robbery,armed violence, unlawful restraint and mob action Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that 39 year-old Brian Odell, of Hanover Park, Ill, was found guilty, after a jury trial, of the offenses of Armed Robbery, Armed Violence, Unlawful Restraint and Mob Action. Odell will be sentenced on March 30, 2018 and faces between 6 and 30 years in the Illinois Dept. of Corrections This case surrounds an incident from June 28, 2017, where Odell and a co-offender held a woman up at gunpoint and then stole her iPhone. Odell and the co-offender also ordered two men to the ground at gunpoint, robbing one of the men of his wallet, and brutally beating both men.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Randi Freese and Rita Gara. The case investigation was led by Detective Shane Marshall of the Woodstock Police Department.

At 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 22 the Woodstock Police Department responded to the Walmart retail store located at 1275 Lake Ave. in reference to a report of a subject that may have displayed a weapon to store personnel.

Upon arrival, the responding officers were advised that an individual attempted to remove merchandise from the store without remitting payment and that the individual displayed a handgun when asked to present the receipt for said merchandise. The suspect then fled on foot from the scene with the merchandise.

After obtaining witness statements, responding officers observed, met with, and detained the suspect who was located in close proximity to the Walmart property. During the investigation, probable cause was established and the suspect, Luis E. Arreola-Gonzalez, 24, of Woodstock, was placed under arrest.

Upon conferring with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, Arreola-Gonzalez was charged with one count of Aggravated Robbery, one count of Obstructing Justice, one count

Hook ‘em, hold ‘em, release ‘em is good advice for fishing and life Being a judge for the international Erma Bombeck Essay Competition is a thrill and honor that never grows old.

The contest is held bi-annually, and entries for 2018 are closed, so this isn’t a hype to encourage you to write an essay. I’m simply ruminating over the entries I was tasked to review. My “pile” held several of what I believe to be contenders and that makes me happy.

I’ve been doing this for several years now and this time had the most that could probably make the cut to the final round. Final Round Judge: Dave Barry.

I, of course, do not get the names of the writers or which move on.

I read and score and submit. Each essay is identified by a number and all scoring is done online. When

Fritter away a moment, an hour, an entire day.

Time is a valuable and limited commodity. Each of us has a limited amount to spend as we choose. And once time is gone, it’s gone. There’s no going back to five minutes ago to redo or re-experience. Not even for a second. Time is rigid that way. (Unless you are Marty McFly and in possession of a souped-up DeLorean.)

There’s only right now. And in writing and reading that sentence, a moment was spent and we’ve since moved on to the next right now. And the next. And the next.

And so on.

It might seem depressing. Or not.

Realizing each moment is all we’ve got isn’t the depressing part. It shouldn’t be.

winners are announced, I read the essays to see if any were from my first-round batch. I had a couple that I think could get at least honorable mention.

But many miss the mark. The writers are given clear instruction on how to craft their 450-word essay, including this timeless sage advice from Erma herself: The piece should “Hook ‘em with the lead.

Hold ‘em with laughter. Exit with a quip they won’t forget.”

Very few managed to do all three.

I judge essays in the Humor category (the other is Human Interest) and the Humor criteria is obviously: “Is it funny?” It’s surprising how many are not. Alas, during the first read-through, only a handful made me scribble in my notes “I laughed.”

Erma’s advice is great for storytelling in general, be in print or in person. Hook ‘em, hold ‘em, and then release them. It’s about being intentional. If you are speaking in front of a group, you don’t have to be a stand-up comic or the king of one-liners. Simply open with an interesting tidbit, throw in something light and humorous (no matter what your topic), and leave them with a lovely nugget of value.

You can do that with a talk, a

blog post, a keynote speech, or even your introduction at a networking event. Hook, hold, release.

The other tidbit that I gathered while judging was simply to follow directions. “Stay on topic.” “Evoke emotion.” That goes with other time-tested advice to know yourself and know your audience. Apply that to whatever you are doing and gauge your remarks accordingly.

When I first started writing my newspaper column back in 2001, I was funny. I wrote about kids and dog hair and butts and bras and faux pas. My personal episodes were also universal. When you write or tell a story, you want your reader/ audience to self-identify. You want to connect. You want to share a moment. You want to improve their day, even if just for a minute. Hook,

hold, release.

Know that your interactions, whether in writing or speaking, can have impact and uplift someone else. Good juju will come back to you in return. When I started writing in 2001, never could I have imagined where it would take me.

Erma Bombeck was already gone, and here we are now, all these years later, and I am still learning from her. Being a judge for the contest that bears her name is a privilege that never grows old. Thanks, Erma.

The joy of paying attention What is depressing is not realizing and living each day and each moment as though it is no different from the one before or the one after until they all blur together and nothing stands out.

Now there’s a concept.

I’m not saying every moment of every day for all the rest of the days of our lives should be filled with lollipops, unicorns, infinite insight and all things bright and beautiful. That would be impossible.

But we do have moments that are better than others. And when we do, perhaps we should take note. Realize.

Grasp. Savor. Be aware of the goodness surrounding us so we can remember and revisit that state of being at a later time.

Conversely, we can recognize, discern and be aware of negative moments for what they are: moments.

Lingering over negativity (and let’s face it, we all do) literally robs us of an inverse moment we could spend revisiting a joyous occurrence, or better yet, creating and living a new one to add to our arsenal.

Hurt and pain are real and it’s oversimplifying to say we can just “get over it” in a moment or minutes or even days or years. But being cognizant of how we choose to feel and what we choose to focus on can aid in the journey to positivity.

they are undeniable parts of life. And while we all probably wish for a little more happiness and a little less angst, neither is a total crime against time.

Wasting it is.

And we do that, not when we are feeling, but when we are not.

The new plugged-in tendencies of our culture provide a potential sinkhole of wasted time. When we sit in a room with a group of people and no one is talking because they are all staring at their screens, moments are lost.

Our devices make us more productive and that’s good because busy is the new black. Multitasking is a survival strategy. At least it feels that way at my house. But multitasking can be a huge time crime because when we are doing five things at once we are so focused on the whizzing whirr of action surrounding and consuming our to-do list that we fail to realize, grasp or discern the moments as they occur.

Chatting with another person instead of texting. Giving someone a real-live smile instead of an emoji.

Putting the to-do list away to chat with your spouse after work or your son after school. The cashier who tells you to, “Have a nice day,” and seems to really mean it.

Moments in time. Choices we make.

Mundane? Sometimes yes. But if we don’t find meaning in the mundane, then life becomes rather meaningless.

And finding joy in the mundane everyday starts with paying attention to it.

Not paying attention – now there’s where the waste comes in.

McHenry Police received a few concerns about the Prairie Trail crossing at Crystal Lake Rd. and Mill St. We would like to remind motorists to use caution when approaching all crosswalks, especially this one which crosses four lanes. Even on Jan. 24, as you can see, this trail crossing is being used. If you see the lights flashing, please prepare to stop. The speed limit at this crossing is 30 MPH. D155 Board approves superintendent employment contract The board approved the superintendent employment contract for Steve Olson effective immediately through the 2020-2021 school year. Mr. Olson has been serving as interim superintendent since the start of the 2017-18 school year. Prior to that, he served as the Crystal Lake Central High School principal for 16 years.

“As a board, we value having a leader who is invested in our communities, and who has the best interest at heart for both our students and staff,” said Adam Guss, Board of Education president. “In the last several months,

Mr. Olson has proven to us that he’s focused on a student centered approach, strengthening community partnerships, and communicating openly and honestly.”

Previously, he served the district as as vice principal, dean, athletic director, and guidance counselor. He began his career as a Crystal Lake South High School social studies teacher. He has lived in the Crystal Lake community for the past 33 years. Three of his children have graduated from Crystal Lake Central High School, his youngest daughter will graduated from Cen-

tral in May. “I am committed to working with our staff, students, parents, and community to improve outcomes for all students in District 155. As a parent and district leader, I am proud to be part of a community that values the education we provide,” said Steve Olson, superintendent.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in broadfield social studies from University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, a master’s in guidance and counseling and an Illinois administrative endorsement from Northern Illinois University.

McHenry Police have relocated the light-up speed limit signs to help remind motorists and give a visual aid to keep their speeds at a safe level. One sign is now located at the intersection of Green St. and Turnberry Dr. The second sign has been moved to the 4900 block of Oakwood Dr. The two areas selected incorporate hilly and curvy roads with entrances to neighborhoods, city parks, crosswalks and residential driveways.

McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim announced that the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association will be awarding over $54,000 in college scholarships throughout the State of Illinois to students wishing to pursue higher education during 2018-2019 academic years.

Sheriff Prim will be awarding (1) scholarship in the amount of $500.

The Scholarship is to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. The students must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the State of Illinois.

There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin. The only limitation is as follows: • Applicants must be permanent Illinois residents.

• Applicants applying to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office for this scholarship must be residents of McHenry County.

• Scholarship must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the State of Illinois.

• Students must be enrolled fulltime during the 2018-2019 school year (excluding summer session).

Applications are now available at the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office or online at www.ilsheriff.org. Students must complete the application, answer the essay question and return all documentation to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office by March 12, 2018 (must be postmarked by this date).
