The Green Read – Gently used books, sustainable gifts Owned, operated by The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is excited to announce the opening of its second “gently used books” book store. The new shop is located at 61 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake and opened to the public on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24. With this opening, The Environmental Defenders is returning to its roots, for Crystal Lake is where our first office and employee set up camp in the 1970s. The Green Read is located in the busy downtown historic district with restaurants, specialty stores, brewery, theater, commuter train, bike path, and more. The shop has a warm atmosphere and welcomes everyone in to browse for a good book and even chat about the environment. There is an amazing assortment of books in all genres, fiction and non-fiction, kids’ books, cooking, self-help, history and so much more. We even have some games! This venture is a wonderful prospect for The Environmental Defenders’ future as we strive to reach out to more and more people so that eventually all residents of McHenry County become aware of what we have done and will continue to do to preserve and protect our environment. So, in addition to our office and

The Green Spot store on the historic Woodstock Square, we now have a place to call our own in the heart of the population center of McHenry County. We are excited about the possibilities of broadening our reach geographically, much as our roaming recycling drives have done, by having a presence in downtown Crystal Lake. Soon, we’ll even have a comfy seating area where one can pick up information about our organization, become a member and/or just read and relax. Please think of both of our locations with the holidays coming up since books make great gifts! The Green Spot store is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is located in the Woodstock Square Mall (110 S. Johnson, Woodstock). Hours for The Green Read at present are Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and SUBMITTED PHOTOS McHenry County News Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Green Read is located at 61 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake and opened to the public on Small BusiThank you in advance for supporting this important practice of reuse ness Saturday on Nov. 24. as we strive to keep good “reads” out of the waste stream. We look forward to welcoming you to The Green Read! By Cynthia Kanner, Executive Director, Environmental Defenders of McHenry County.

Holiday gifts that keep on giving BY MELINDA MYERS

Make gift giving easy with unique green gifts that provide weeks and in some cases months and years of beauty. Plus, gifting easycare blooming plants is an experiential gift that’s ideal for everyone, especially that person on your list who has everything. Gardeners as well as practical family members and friends will enjoy the dual purpose the Christmas rose (Hellebore) provides. This popular European holiday plant is gaining popularity in holiday celebrations here in the U.S. Recipients will enjoy up to two months of blossoms indoors when grown in a cool bright location. Once the danger of frost has passed, it can be moved outdoors into a full or partially shaded spot in the garden for years of added beauty. Even non-gardeners will be fascinated by the amaryllis as its beauty erupts from the bulb. Everyone will eagerly watch for the bulb to sprout, flower stems to quickly grow and eventually produce several large trumpet-shaped blooms. Make it easy and fun for all with a waxed amaryllis bulb. Dipped in colorful wax, these freestanding bulbs need no soil or water. Just set the waxed bulb in a space where they can be enjoyed and watch the magic happen as the amaryllis breaks through the wax coating and grows into a colorful specimen.
