Northwestern Medicine reaches new milestones in cardiac care The expansion of the Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute in McHenry County continues to evolve, providing patients who need advanced cardiac care with more convenient locations. Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital recently achieved a milestone with the completion of the 100th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR).

With TAVR, a narrowed aortic valve is replaced using a catheter-based technique instead of open heart surgery.

“We are pleased to see excellent patient outcomes for our first TAVR 100 patients and look forward to accelerating this program further at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital,” said Patrick M. McCarthy, M.D., executive director of the Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute and chief of cardiac surgery. “We are proud to have pioneered this minimally invasive option at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and we are now able to offer this procedure for patients in McHenry County.”

During TAVR, interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons thread an artificial valve to the heart via a catheter, or tube, most often inserted in the patient’s groin. The valve is expanded and wedges the new valve within the patient’s own diseased aortic valve. The TAVR valve pushes the diseased valve leaflets to the side, allowing the TAVR valve to take over the job of

regulating blood flow.

Transcatheter techniques like those used in TAVR allow the procedure to be performed while the patient’s heart is still beating, eliminating the need for the heart-lung machine and an open heart operation.

“This procedure is a less invasive technique than surgery,” said Elizabeth Retzer, M.D., interventional cardiology at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. “The 100th TAVR at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital is a milestone that exemplifies our commitment to providing the highest quality of care for our patients.”

The TAVR team is composed of an interventional cardiologist, cardiac surgeon, a cardiac imaging specialist, valve clinic coordinator, structural heart nurse and a structural heart nurse practitioner.

“The 100th TAVR at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital reflects the dedication of all involved, from the planning to the delivery of care,” said Asad Sheikh, M.D., medical director of the structural heart program at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital.

“It is very gratifying to see patients improve their quality of life and who are able to quickly resume their activities.”

County Board seeks to fill vacant seat McHenry County Board Chairman Mike Buehler is seeking applications to fill the vacancy left by former District 2 member Jessica Phillips, who resigned Nov. 19 because she is moving out of the district.

The county board declared the vacancy at its Dec. 21 meeting for the term, which expires Dec. 1, 2022.

What is your default?

Quite often, each morning before getting dressed I check my weather app to get the prediction for the upcoming day. Yesterday I caught myself hoping the sun would be shining and the skies blue.

Then it dawned on me. There wasn’t a question whether the sun would be shining. Likewise for the blueness of the skies.

Both were an undeniable “yes.”

In that moment, I realized something obvious and important: the sun always shines. The sky is always blue.

Every day, without a doubt, 365 days a year. Each day of my life – since the beginning of Mother Earth actually – the sun has shone and the skies have been blue. They don’t change.

They haven’t changed. Not ever. They are steadfast and true. I guarantee it. The universe guarantees it.

Thing is, though, I haven’t always looked up to blue skies and sunshine, even though they were both there.

I’m guessing you might feel the same way.

Here’s the truth that’s been right in front of our eyes the whole time: the sun and the sky don’t change.

Our perception does. Our awareness does.

The sky is the sky. The sun is the sun. There is no changing either one of them. When we look up, they are the default.

Thing is, sometimes clouds get in the way, or at least we allow clouds to get in the way.

I look up at the sky and see clouds and think the sun and the blue sky have disappeared,

attempt to force vaccines on Illinoisans instead of allowing them to make difficult decisions for themselves and their families about what is best for their healthcare.”

The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has recently issued guidance on this topic. According to their guidance, “Plans and issuers may not discriminate in eligibility for benefits or coverage based on whether or not an individual obtains a COVID-19 vaccination.”

The lawmaker who originally introduced this proposal has currently tabled his legislation, but Syverson said he will keep a close eye on the topic during the upcoming legislative session, slated to start Jan. 4, and will work with his fellow lawmakers to do what is necessary to ensure all Illinoisans continue to receive the healthcare coverage they deserve regardless of their vaccination status.

Board Vice-Chair Sherry Giesecke said the board seemed to be talking in absolutes.

“Absolutely, we have to spend all this money on all these things, or absolutely we don’t spend any of it,” she said. “I’m in agreement with Jonathan—I think we need to take a deep breath and back up. We’re not even in 2022 yet. I think you can tuck this money away and perhaps you should. I think we should put the brakes on a bit.”

Curry said he didn’t disagree with that thinking.

“And if this was $7 million that we were spending, I would totally agree with

that,” he said. “But we’re talking about $269,700 worth of items that are presented by our department heads, saying it is needed. We’re not in those departments; we have to trust what they say is needed at this time. We’re bringing Boone County into 2022. A lot of places have these items; I don’t see this being frivolous.”

Call for vote A motion calling for the question came at that time and had the required second. The motion was to approve spending $269,000 on the six items on the list including the four from the health department, one from Sheriff Dave Ernest, on behalf of the courthouse, and one from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The motion failed, 5-5 with newly seated board member Tom Walberg voting present and member Ray Larson absent. When there’s a tie vote, the motion fails.

“Yes” votes were cast by Vice Chair Giesecke, Johnson, Bill Robertson, Schabacker and Curry.

“No” votes came from members Freddy De La Trinidad, Rodney Riley, Van Laar, Dave Wiltse and Cherie Bartelt.

Discussion continued, with a representative of the food bank being allowed to address the board over the telephone about its efforts to assist county residents experiencing food insecurities, due to rising costs of food and gasoline.

Giesecke said she had done some research on the food bank and found it was a corporation, whose CEO was making $280,000.

“If we’re hell-bent on giv-

ing money away, why don’t we look at some of the Christian food pantries we have in this county, because we know that money is going to stay right here,” she said.

“Ok, let’s move this along,” Johnson encouraged. “If there are any motions, I’ll take them now.”

He got one, from member Bartelt, who moved to remove the Northern Illinois Food Bank from the list of funding requests. That was approved in a voice vote, with one opponent.

Johnson then moved to remove the requested monument sign from in front of the administration building and got a second from Wiltse.

“I actually agree with the monument sign,” member De La Trinidad said, “because it lets people know all the services and meetings and things like that. We already struggle enough to let people know what we offer.”

Robertson, who’s also the Belvidere Township supervisor, said the township “gets a great deal of response from its sign” in front of the standalone office at 8200 Fairgrounds Road.

That motion failed, also in a voice vote but with a lot of opposition.

Finally, there was a motion to approve the original motion, as amended, to spend a reduced $219,700 for five of the original six requested expenditures using ARPA funding. That motion passed, 6-5.

“Yes’ votes came from De La Trinidad, Riley, Robertson, Schabacker, Bartelt and Curry.

“No” votes were cast by Giesecke, Johnson, Van Laar, Wiltse and Walberg.

A third grant for Boone County Behavioral Task Force

On Wednesday, Dec. 22, Amanda Mehl, Public Health administrator for the Boone County Health Department, announced that the Boone County Behavioral Health Task Force has been awarded a third three-year U.S. Department of Justice grant in the amount of $449,658 to expand local efforts for mental health in Boone County.

These funds will expand the efforts of the task force and advance its goals to support law enforcement responses to behavioral health in Boone County.

“I chair the Boone County Behavioral Task Force,” Mehl said. “I am standing here with Amy Gallano, deputy director of Boone County Probation as the co-chair of the task force.

It is our honor to inform you that the county of Boone has received a three-year Justice and Mental Health Collaboration grant through the Department of Justice. This grant is designed to support law enforcement and behavioral health cross-system collaboration in order to improve public safety responses and outcomes for individuals with mental illness who come in contact with the criminal justice system.

“Through our current IPLAN and community assessments, behavioral health was named the number one priority for Boone County.

As a health department it is our duty to lead the charge in system collaboration for the benefit of our residents. In April, 2017, the Boone County Behavioral Task Force was formed and completed a Sequential Intercept Map, finalized, finalized in 2018, to identify gaps and resources in our community. We used this map to apply for our previous Department of Justice grants.

“The first Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Reduction (COAR) grant being focused on opioid response in our local jail in 2019, followed by the second Support Outreach Recovery Team (SORT) grant to form an outreach team, both in the jail and in the community, in 2020. We began to govern these grants by forming multiple sub-committees through our task force. As the COVID-19 pandemic presented many issues, we also struggled with staffing shortages, but were able to begin a mentorship opportunity from Butler County, Ohio, where we learned how to deal with these challenges from an already stable program.

have given us the ability to move forward on many initiatives to improve substance abuse in our county and connect with the local jail to help those in the criminal justice system who struggle with addiction. However, we continue to see those battling with severe mental health symptoms coming in contact with law enforcement due to a lack of support. Now in 2021, with a new program manager and two fully functional grants, we wrote for a new funding opportunity that could be the missing piece for our county.

“With this third grant opportunity of $449,658, we have been awarded a total of $1,648,337 through our task force for Boone County. We are building a system that links people to care. We are building a system where local government works with private sector, health care, faithbased, and social service partners to support and protect residents. We are building a system to end the revolving door of a sector of our population with the criminal justice system.”

Jessica Perillo, program manager, said, “Our current outreach team, funded fulltime by our previous Department of Justice grants, is comprised of our Community Law Enforcement Officer from the Belvidere Police Dept., Program Navigator from the Boone County

Health Department, and an addiction counselor staffed

by Rosecrance in our Boone County Jail. We are currently able to support our criminal justice system in identifying individuals in need of substance abuse treatment services and link these individuals to the services they need. We have seen an overwhelming amount of positive support from our community partners and residents of Boone County.

“We know our current model of outreach partnered with the Criminal Justice System works for us and our community. However, the majority of our outreach team has been focused on substance abuse and, although we are already measuring significant gains for the community, we have seen an alarming amount of co-occurring disorders and those struggling with severe mental health symptoms.

“Our community law enforcement officer has received 87 referrals since June from fellow officers and deputies who came in contact with individuals in the community experiencing mental health symptoms and 40 percent of referrals that we work with for addictions also need aid for mental health. Without a mental health professional to assist on our team, we have limited amount of time and resources for supporting those needing mental health

services, especially those who present with mental health as their primary need.

“With this added funding, we can expand our current Support Outreach team to include mental health professionals from two of the largest behavioral health providers in our area. I would like to thank Rosecrance, Inc., and Remedies Renewing Lives in accepting our partnership and each providing a staff member to join our community law enforcement officer in following up on mental health related calls foe service and aiding the individual in engaging in the community resource that fits for them. Our team will now be able to provide connections to community resources, follow up, and support to the entire realm of behavioral health symptoms.

“It can be difficult to ask for help and navigate your way through health insurance, appointments, assessments and transportation. When a community member is ready, we will be there with a member of a treatment provider to assist them with any barriers and give them the best chance to achieve stability and happiness.”

“After creating an outreach program for those struggling with addiction, I am pleased to expand our services to include individuals struggling with severe mental health symptoms” said Mehl. “Our

current programming has already seen such a positive response from the community.

With the ability to expand and include all behavioral health related concerns, we can continue to make real change for our residents.

“This program is part of the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP). It is designated to support law enforcement–behavioral health cross-system collaboration and to improve public safety responses and outcomes for individuals with mental illness or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse who come into contact with the criminal justice system.

“This funding will allow Boone County to expand programming and services already established through the Boone County Support Outreach Recovery Team (SORT) which is an outreach program partnered with local law enforcement to follow up on substance abuse and related behavioral health calls for service and link to appropriate care.

“The expanded outreach project, Support Outreach Recovery Team-Behavioral Health (SORT-BH) will allow two co-responders from Rosecrance, Inc., and Remedies Renewing Lives to collaborate with our current community law enforcement officer (CLEO) to follow up

on mental health-only related calls for service and directly link to counseling. Our current outreach program has resources for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, but has a lack of options when working with those struggling with severe mental health symptoms.

“With this new funding, our current programming can expand to serve all kinds of behavioral health symptoms and link to local Taskforce partners. The Boone County Behavioral Health Taskforce, founded in 2017, is made up of organizations from public health, mental health, justice, and faith communities and has worked together to create solutions to behavioral health issues.”

About the Boone County Behavioral Health Task Force: The Boone County Behavioral Health Task Force was formed in April 2017. The Boone County Health Department, working with the City of Belvidere Police Department and many participating stakeholders aims to build and strengthen Behavioral Health Service delivery to Boone County residents. The grant application was written by the Behavioral Health Taskforce and Boone County Health Department using data from our current Support Outreach Recovery Team.

Food cooperative reaches campaign goal The Food Shed Co-op completed its Community Investment Campaign (CIC) on Nov. 30, and achieved the stated goal of raising $1,750,000 from co-op owners and other members of the

community. The CIC began on Aug. 15 and ended on Oct. 15 with approximately $1.1 MM raised at that point.

The CIC was extended through November since community enthusiasm was

high and the board felt the goal could be met with a few more weeks to solicit investments and donations, which turned out to be the case.

With investment funds raised from members of the

community along with bank loans, ownership equity and grants, the food co-op is on track now to secure $4.3 million which is the minimum amount needed to build, equip and staff the full-ser-

While more funding may be needed due to rising inflation and building costs, the board of directors were sufficiently comfortable to move the project timeline forward from the funding stage to the building stage.

Professional store designers have been hard at work for several months and an architectural firm will soon be hired to finalize the building design for the food co-op located at the intersection of Lake Shore Drive and US HWY 14 in Woodstock.

While the board of directors and over 1350 owner-members of the co-op are feeling great about the results of the capital campaign, the co-op is still accepting investments (preferred shares and owner loans) and donations until construction begins in early 2022. Every investment and/or donation dollar raised in the community reduces the co-ops’ dependence on more expensive commercial lending sources.

Extra funds may also allow the co-op to add more features to the store that co-op

owners hope to see, e.g., solar and geothermal energy.

The Food Shed Co-op was incorporated in April 2014 and currently has just over 1350 owner-members. Food Shed Co-op membership has grown dramatically since the store site in Woodstock was announced in December 2020. The co-op is a strong advocate for local farms using sustainable agricultural techniques.

Owner-members also value supporting the local economy, providing access to healthy local food and protecting the environment by reducing the carbon footprint caused by the distance that food travels to grocery store shelves. The store will be a model for sustainable living, strive for zero-waste and help build a stronger, more resilient local food system.
