Connecting Deployed Troops to Home By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

rian Halwix of Union founded ‘Home Connection’ to support our troops overseas. “We send all kinds of stuff. We have jerky and cookies and coloring pages. We have teamed with Stauffer’s, the makers of animal crackers. Soldiers use the boxes as ice breakers with the locals. The kids love to color our logo. They also give boxes to newly deployed soldiers and enjoy some of the boxes themselves.” When soldiers are deployed overseas, they are separated from family, friends and everything they grew up with. The ‘Jerky for Troops’ organization is where Halwix learned how important packages from home can be. “I chaired that organization for three years,” Halwix tells me. “It became a lot more personal, talking to the soldiers and seeing pictures.” Jerky is one of the items most requested by troops serving away from home. “All of the jerky that we at Home Connection have made

Marengo’s Stone Soup Kitchen By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

nybody and everybody is welcome to come,” James Regelin, Marengo alderman, tells me. “This is not a church event, it is a community gathering for soup and camaraderie and building bonds with neighbors.” Since the day its doors
opened on October 13, the community Stone Soup Kitchen has been located at the First Presbyterian Church, 203 W. Washington Street, Marengo on Tuesdays. “We offer a variety of soups every Tuesday from 12:00 pm until 8:00 pm. We have a lot of volunteers coming forward.” The variety of soups can range from vegetable soup to chili and dill
pickle soup to chicken and/or beef.” Donations have come from “Knights of Columbus from Sacred Heart, MORE, the First Presbyterian Church of Marengo, the Methodist Church of Marengo, McHenry York Rite and members of Marengo Lodge 138. Helen Lindow and Don Lockhart have offered monetary donations to help buy supplies.” Panera Bread, Trio Lounge, Swiss Maid Bakery in Woodstock and other businesses have also been donating supplies of bread, rolls, cookies and soup for the Stone Soup Kitchen. In fact, the Trio Lounge has also allowed Stone Soup soup makers to make soups in their kitchens.
Regelin chose the event’s name from the Stone Soup folktale.: Once upon a time, somewhere in post-war Eastern Europe, people jealously hoarded whatever food they could find, hiding it even from their friends and neighbors. One day a wandering soldier came into a village in the evening and asked to stay for the night. “There’s not a bite to eat in the whole village. Better keep moving on.” “Oh, I have everything I need,” he said. “In fact, I was thinking of making some stone soup to share with all of you.” He asked to borrow a large cauldron, filled it with water, and built a fire under

it. He reached into his pocket and brought out an ordinary looking stone. He carefully brushed it off and dropped it into the water. Hearing the rumor of food, most of the villagers came to the village square. The soldier sniffed the “broth”, licked his lips in anticipation, and hunger began to overcome their skepticism. “Ahh,” the soldier said to himself, loud enough to be overheard, “I do like a tasty stone soup. Of course, stone soup with cabbage – that would be good enough for the Mayor.” Soon a villager approached, holding a cabbage he’d
