Bookstore celebrates one year The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Green Read bookstore at 61 N. Williams St. in downtown Crystal Lake celebrated its one-year anniversary on Nov. 30. Throughout the day there were special deals, treats, many visitors and a real sense of achievement at this one-year mark for the new store, which upholds the organization’s practice of reuse through keeping great used books out of landfills. If you haven’t visited, you are invited to visit. The space

is cozy and inviting and in addition to books, there are puzzles, green gifts, like goat’s milk soap and shampoo bars, and the store is open seven days a week. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Shown here is the Heggem family who enjoyed the one-year celebration (left to right): Leif, Tina, Abby and Amanda.

History Museum exhibit ends Jan. 3 The McHenry County Historical “trade stimulators’ from the 1950s. Society will pull the plug Jan. 3 on Veteran Christmas memorabilia your opportunity to view a one-of- collectors Dave Harms and Lynne a-kind display of working holiday Eltrevoog have compiled a lineup of

some 20 different automated props designed to lure window shoppers inside stores. Major retailers doubled down on this strategy in their Christ-

mas marketing campaigns. Montgomery Wards embraced Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Carson Pirie Scott had the Cinnamon Bear and Marshall Field adopted Uncle Mistletoe and Aunt Holly. Frosty the Snowman, which is celebrating his 50th birthday this year, promoted merchandise at Sears. The Marengo couple’s repertoire, accumulated mostly in the last 10 years, includes a 1951 sleeping Santa, a ballerina bear, an elf assembling a toy and a Santa playing piano. They were manufactured by companies like New York-based David Hamberger Holiday Displays and Gregory Motors, Inc. and Harold Gale Co. of Kansas City, Mo. “I love lights that blink and I love motion,” Harms said. “We’re hop-

ing that when they’re all moving the whimsy of it will produce a smile.” Other vintage holiday decorations, many with a Frosty theme, join these mechanized pieces at the McHenry County Historical Museum, 6422 Main St. in Union. Entries in the fourth annual “Rock Around the Quilted Tree” also are on display. These beautiful quilts–many with log cabin or snowman themes, are displayed in tree-like fashion in a type of fabric forest. Both displays will remain up through Jan. 3, with the exception of Dec. 31; as well as New Year’s Day. Hours are 1-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Regular museum admission applies.
