McHenry County seeks corrections officers

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is currently taking applications for the position of correctional officer. The written test will take place on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, and the Physical Agility Exam will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020. Applications and all required documents must be received by 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2020.

Applications for correctional officers can be found at www. mchenrysheriff.org or at the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Facility. Qualifications to apply are as follows: • Age: Minimum of 21 years of age. Applicants may test at age 20, but must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.

• Education: High school diploma or GED. • Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen.

• Experience: No prior experience required.

• Driver’s License: Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license.

• FOID Card: Applicant must possess a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card. (Can be applied for online at: www.ispfsb.com).

• Residency: Must live in McHenry County or any bordering Illinois counties, or Kenosha/Walworth counties in Wisconsin, within one year of hiring.

Starting pay is currently $52,021, with top base pay at $87,693 after 10 years, with paid holidays, paid vacation and sick time after one-year probation. Expanded Driver Services hours

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that beginning Dec. 30 some Driver Services facilities throughout Chicagoland and northern Illinois will change operating hours and add exclusive days just for REAL ID applicants to accommodate the increased volume of customers applying for REAL ID driver’s licenses and ID cards.

The federal government will require Americans to use a valid U.S. passport or obtain a REAL ID to fly domestically beginning Oct. 1, 2020.

“These new work hours are designed to best serve Illinoisans who do not have U.S. passports and who need to obtain a REAL ID by Oct. 1, 2020,” said White. “The REAL ID Act is a federal mandate that has a set deadline of Oct. 1, 2020, for people without valid U.S. passports to obtain a REAL ID to fly domestically or visit secure federal facilities.

Like states throughout the country, we have experienced an increased volume of customers applying for REAL IDs and expect this to continue through December 2020.”

The new hours take effect Dec. 30, 2019 through Dec. 31, 2020.

The following Northern Illinois and Chicago-area facilities will be open Tuesday through Saturday with expanded hours on Saturday.

Tuesday through Friday hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

White emphasized to Illinoisans the importance of the following key points: • Customers have a choice. They do not need a REAL ID if they have a valid U.S. passport, military ID or other TSA-acceptable form of identification. These documents will be accepted for domestic air travel. • Customers are asked to please be patient at facilities as the process to apply for a REAL ID takes longer due to the multiple documents required by the federal government.

• Customers are also encouraged to take advantage of the many online services offered allowing patrons to conduct business from home. Some online transactions include: obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card, renewing a vehicle registration, obtaining a driver record abstract or renewing a standard driver’s license with the Safe Driver Renewal Program.

• Illinois REAL ID cards are now a permanent option for Illinois residents.

Since April 2019, nearly 500,000 REAL IDs have been issued statewide.

Illinois harvest running behind schedule Record spring rainfall led to late planting, smaller harvest

As the month of December arrived, many Illinois farmers were still working to harvest their corn and soybeans—the state’s two largest field crops—and agriculture officials are anticipating one of the smallest harvests in recent years.

As of Nov. 24, only about 88 percent of corn acres in Illinois had been harvested, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, down from 100 percent at the same time last year.

Soybean harvesting was 95 percent complete, down from 99 percent a year ago.

That delay is the result of historic rainfall in the spring that drenched many parts of the state, preventing farmers from getting seeds into the ground in some cases until as late as June.

Officials at the Illinois Department of Agriculture say the final, official numbers for the 2019 growing season won’t be known until early January.

But Rodney Weinzierl, executive director of the Illinois Corn Growers Association, said all indicators point to a below-average year.

“Our acres of corn this year was the lowest we’ve had probably since the late 1980s,” Weinzierl said in a phone interview. “Just because of that corn that was prevented from being planted, just because of such wet conditions.”

Weinzierl said Illinois farmers planted about 1.1 million fewer acres of corn this year, compared to a normal year, and there was also a big drop-off in soybean acres.

“So it’s just something that we’ve not experienced before,” he said.

the U.S. Department of Agriculture is projecting that each acre will produce less this year than in the recent past—about 179 bushels per acre this year, down from 210 bushels in 2018, which was a record for Illinois.

Last year, Illinois harvested roughly 11 million acres of corn, according to USDA estimates. Those acres yielded about 2.7 billion bushels which, at an average price of $3.62 per bushel, generated $8.2 billion in farm income.

Soybean farmers harvested 10.5 million acres, producing nearly 667 million bushels. At $8.74 per bushel, that generated about $6.3 billion in income.

Most farmers who left acres unplanted this year had insurance coverage, but those policies only cover farmers for their input costs such as the seeds and fertilizers that went unused. They do not cover farmers for the loss of income or the cost of land for farmers who lease acreage from other landowners.

“So farmers that rent ground would still have an overall loss,” Weinzierl said. “But it’s like any other insurance, it’s meant to kind of allow you to be able to farm again next year.”

A spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Agriculture said final numbers for the 2019 growing season are due to be released Jan. 10. A separate report will be released in February detailing the state’s first year of legal hemp production.

Cary wants resident input for five-year plan The Village of Cary is seeking resident feedback as part of the planning process for the next update to the five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Algonquin Police release recent citation numbers The Algonquin Police Department made one impaired driving arrest and issued 22 seat belt and child safety seat citations during the recent Thanksgiving enforcement effort.

Conservation coalition

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, The Land Conservancy of McHenry County, McHenry County Conservation District and Friends of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge have formed a conservation coalition called Conservacion Conversacion with the purpose of organizing outreach to the county’s Hispanic and Latino communities. In October, the group welcomed families and individuals on a bilingual conservation bus tour that took them to four sites around the county, including the Wolf Oak, shown here. Other stops included O’Brien Prairie, Lost Valley Visitor Center at Glacial Park and North Branch. Naturalists Steve Byers and Ed Collins, accompanied the group for talks on these beautiful, natural areas. The group plans to continue and expand its programming in 2020.
