Equine-assisted services for veterans supported by grant
Harvard-based BraveHearts Therapeutic Riding & Educational Center has received a grant from The Community Foundation for McHenry County. These funds will be used to support individuals, including McHenry County veterans and veteran family members/caregivers at BraveHearts by providing equine assisted services (EAS) to enhance their mental wellness by reducing their symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and depression. All services are provided at zero cost to veterans and veteran family members/ caregivers. Through weekly therapeutic riding sessions, equine assisted psychotherapy sessions, specialty programming, drill teams, vocational instructor certification programs and volunteer pro-
grams specific for veterans, BraveHearts has a multitude of avenues to advance skills and support occupational participation among military veterans. The increased connection with the horse facilitates social interaction and connections with others outside the program while acquiring new awareness of the mind, body, and spirit connection. The Community Foundation for McHenry County is a leading steward of philanthropic giving in McHenry County. At its core, the foundation is an organization created with gifts from generous people committed to local causes. For donors, the foundation serves as a philanthropic partner and advisor. For the community, the foundation serves as a grant maker and a change maker.
