Weekend of Restoration event at the conservation district Connect to nature, to community. Enjoy a bit of history and science, a bit of reflection, restore nature and yourself. Join McHenry County Conservation District for the sixteenth “Weekend of Restoration” event – Camp Hackmatack: A Geological Perspective on Oct. 12 and 13 from 8 a.m., Saturday to noon Sunday at Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Rt. 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. This awardwinning program is a mini vacation that makes a difference. Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge sits on an ancient landscape wrought over hundreds of millions of years by inland seas, glaciers, and the work of water and wind. The beautiful woods, wetlands, and prairies around which the Refuge is built are a direct response to the land formed by these primeval forces. Participants will travel a short distance north to look closely at the geological forms of Hackmatack and the events of the last Ice Age. To make the refuge a more beautiful place,
the group will plant native trees and shrubs, and build protective cages around the young oak trees to protect them from deer browse. Come make a difference to a place that will one day be a jewel of the region and the NWR system. Group size is limited to 30 and the registration deadline is Oct. 7; register online at MCCDistrict.org, program code: 6285. Open to ages 16 and up. Cost (fee includes meals): $25; Seniors - folks 60 years and older $15; Students $20; and free for Registered District Volunteers. Call 815-678-4532, ext. 8144 for Discount Code. Several lodging options are within 15 minutes of Glacial Park or camp for free exclusively for this event. BYO camping equipment. Shower facilities available. For additional information, contact Tom Simpson at 815-678-4532, ext. 8218 or tsimpson@mccdistrict.org.
