Autumn Drive
2016
By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT
The 29th Annual Autumn Drive brought hundreds of people out into the country roads between Woodstock and Marengo. The map they handed out shows 23 locations participating in the Drive and most of those locations hold multiple vendors. A typical description of a stop on the map reads: “20+ booths are featured in both indoor and outdoor displays. There truly is a little something for everyone at this stop; from lunch to sweets, antiques to treasures, Christmas/Halloween decorations and jewelry to sweatshirts and skin care. All this and an indoor restroom available to the public.” Restaurants are listed on the map or you can find food along the way; supporting Boy Scouts serving brats and burgers; candy or doughnuts or the ever popular kettle corn vendor. Along the way, you might see: Woodstock’s ‘Helping Paws Animal Shelter’. They have Macy with them. Macy is a hound mix with three sisters. They were born on July 7, 2016. Fire up your computer, stock up on pens and paper and sharpen your pencils because the 18th Annual National Novel Writing Month is here. Your November challenge is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. You don’t have to do it alone. You don’t have to lock yourself in a room and survive on cola and crackers. Many libraries and bookstores in McHenry County are offering support and advice. The Huntley Area Public Library will have a Write In Workshop on November 5, 9 – 11 am. It will have Word Wars and Sprints. You can learn more about the regional community of writers who will help support and encourage you to reach your writing goals. The local NaNoWriMo Municipal Liaison will have writing prompts, advice, and the official NaNoWriMo stickers for 2016. In Woodstock, Read Between the Lynes Bookstore is planning Friday Night Write Ins from 6 – 8 pm. “A lot of the staff will be participating, including me and my poetry club – Atrocious Poets, “says Sophie Julin. “We are going to do one poem a day and end up with a collection.” “You don’t have to be conventional,” she says. “It doesn’t have to be polished. We’re excited to start the evenings and bring in writers for the month of November. We might offer specials to the writers.” The Marengo-Union Public Library is offering two discussions with authors: Adela Crandell Durkee will be at the library on Thursday, November 10, at 6 pm. “She has written for a newspaper, “Kim Holesha, Programming Coordinator says.
“She has written two books that are in the process of being published.” “On Saturday, November 19, at 11 am, Dan Klefstad of WNIJ Radio will be here. On air, he talks about books, talks about authors and talks with authors.” He is the host of ‘The Morning Edition’ and the ‘Book Series’ editor for the radio station. “Both of them are coming to talk about writing and their experiences,” says Holesha. “Basically they will be question and answer sessions.” “Everyone has a story to tell and wouldn’t it be great to get it on paper? You don’t know what you’ve got inside you until you get it out.” The McHenry Public Library is holding Write Ins throughout the month. Mondays at 4:30 pm is their Young Writers sessions and on Wednesdays at 3:30 pm is their Tween/Teen Writers sessions. Things are still in the planning stages at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Crystal Lake and the Woodstock Public Library is thinking about doing something. To participate, you can sign up for free on the www.NaNoWriMo.org website. It includes the chance to meet fellow authors in the area, pep talks by famous authors and tools that will help you to get organized. If you want to write something else, you can join the NaNo Rebels. They write short stories, creative non-fiction, experimental work, memoirs, poetry, and, essentially, anything else but novels. NaNoWriMo is designed for adult participants but the Young Writers program is very popular as well. Check your local library and bookstore and see what events they are offering in November to help you get your words on paper.
