Music teacher earns National Board Certification

Veteran elementary school music teacher Dawn Firak took her career up an octave earning National Board Certification — the most prestigious credential a teacher can achieve.

She said she sought the certification for her growth and development as a professional and said the two-year certification process was well worth her time.

It required a considerable amount of self-evaluation on her classroom work along with peer review.

“I wanted to reflect on my teaching and hone my skills. I just wanted to take the time to better prepare myself as an educator for my students,” Firak said.

The certification is administered by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, an independent, non-profit organization formed in 1987 to advance the quality of teaching and learning in the nation’s schools.

Honor Guard lessons

Three other current teachers in District 200 have also earned National Board Certification over the years: science teacher Marcy Buchanan, Woodstock High School world languages teacher Linda Radke and physical education teacher Melinda Etnyre. Firak, who also teaches music at McHenry County Co llege, said one of the biggest benefits of the certification process was the reaffirmation that she was meant to be a music teacher.

“Teaching is in my blood, in my heart and my soul. I learned that this is the right field for me. This is who I am,” Firak said.

She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. Firak said it’s important that music remain a part of school curriculum especially in this age of technology because music teaches us joy and how to be human.

She’s particularly enjoyed teaching music in District 200 because the school district and its parents have a great appreciation for encouraging musical talent.

“They are the key to keeping this music program vital and vibrant and such a big part of this Woodstock community,” Firak said.

Martin Luther King’s influence resonates in Illinois

“He would have been 90 this year,” says the Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Jackson was reflecting on this year’s holiday honoring his mentor and friend.

Jan. 15 was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, celebrated nationally on Jan. 21.

As the years go by, there are fewer of those who marched with him to share their memories. But Jackson, one of his closest aides, can still recount milestone moments from King’s Chicago Freedom Movement of 1965-66 like it was yesterday.

“Our offices used to be at 366 E. 47th St., in what’s now Bronzeville, and we used to meet every Saturday morning at Chicago Theological Seminary,” says Jackson, 77, who first met the man of peace at an airport in 1964, when King was en route to pick up his Nobel Peace Prize.

Jackson then marched with King in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches.

He soon joined the team of the charismatic civil rights leader and was assigned to run Operation Breadbasket, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s anti-poverty effort.

When the Baptist preacher who espoused nonviolence brought the fight for equal rights north to Chicago, Jackson was at his side. Here are significant events involving King in Chicago.

Chicago churches still standing today were the sites of their strategizing meetings, including Fellowship Baptist Church, 4543 S. Princeton Ave.; New Friendship Baptist Church, 848 W 71st St.; and Stone Temple Baptist Church, 3622 W. Douglas Blvd.

There was King’s June 21, 1964 speech at the Illinois Rally for Civil Rights at Soldier Field, days after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed.

Then, after being asked by the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations to come help Black Chicago fight for quality schools, King led a July 26, 1965 march on City Hall; gave a fiery speech before tens of thousands at the July 10, 1966, Freedom Sunday Rally at Soldier Field; and on Aug. 26, 1966, held a globally covered “Summit Agreement” with Mayor Richard J. Daley.

As part of his “End Slums” campaign, King famously moved his family into a dilapidated, third-floor walkup at 1550 S. Hamlin Ave. in North Lawndale on Jan. 1, 1966, the building is long gone but the Dr. King Legacy Apartments and Fair Housing Exhibit Center now marks the spot.

King’s open housing marches, and the attendant violence from angry residents on the Southwest Side, are most remembered, culminating with the infamous Aug. 5, 1966, march through Marquette Park, where the Baptist preacher was felled to the knee by a rock to the head, lending credence to his famous quote: “I have never seen, even in Mississippi and Alabama, mobs as hateful as I’ve seen here in Chicago.”

“When King came to Chicago, we couldn’t live west of Ashland, and blacks were hemmed into these ghettos,” Jackson says, taking a reporter down memory lane.

Born Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Ga., King was ordained and became assistant pastor at his father’s Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1948. He married the beautiful Coretta Scott King in 1953, with whom he had four children.

It was in 1955 that his civil rights efforts began in earnest, when he became president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, the group that led the 13-month Montgomery Bus Boycott after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus. It ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling segregation on public buses unconstitutional.

King gave his tide-turning “I Have

A Dream” speech at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and in 1964 came the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Selma to Montgomery marches, following the infamous “Bloody Sunday” at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, followed in 1965. And King would spend most of the following year in Chicago, marking the expansion of the civil rights battle from the South to northern cities, with key activists Jackson, James Bevel and Al Raby.

King’s mark — while combating racial segregation and discrimination in Chicago — extended to suburban and Downstate Illinois, such as his Feb. 10, 1966, speech before thousands at the Fred Young Fieldhouse of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

Some still debate the success of King’s Chicago campaign — Illinois’ largest city remains one of the nation’s most segregated. But the Chicago Freedom Movement inarguably led to the Fair Housing Act of 1968, signed into law a week after King’s assassination.

Jackson, however, says the larger quest at the heart of the revered leader’s work in Chicago also is inarguably achieved — empowerment and representation, evident in the diverse political landscape of Illinois, of Chicago and nationwide.

“King’s legacy is the Voting Rights Act, which has stood the test of time and resistance,” says Jackson.

“Today,” Jackson continued, “Chicago is the urban center with the most U.S. senators of color, Carol Moseley Braun, Roland Burris and Barack Obama; and the home of two African-American men who ran for president, myself and President Obama. In Illinois, we now have an

African-American lieutenant governor. So King’s legacy stands tall.

“And on this past Nov. 6, his legacy manifested itself in the largest number of women and minorities ever elected in a freshman class of Congress, along with statewide candidates. If you look at Stacey Abrams’ candidacy for governor in Georgia, Andrew Gillum’s candidacy for governor in Florida, and U.S. Senate races in Texas and Mississippi, a new South is rising,” adds Jackson.

“The gap that was once a horizontal gap between black and white is now a vertical gap of disparity between the haves and the have-nots.

That, more than anything, is the unfinished business of Dr. King’s work.”

Railroad telegraphers pose for group photo in 1912

Railroad telegraphers from the Chicago & North Western Depot in Crystal Lake gather for a group photo in 1912. The initials O.R.T stands for Order of Railroad Telegraphers.

The three men identified in the photo are Lyle Woodbury (second from end on right side), Theodore Davis (man with mustache) and Theodore’s son, Clarence Davis (standing behind Theodore). Lyle Woodbury worked for the Chicago and Northwestern early on (1909) in Bristol, Wis. By 1920, he was both telegrapher and ticket agent there. He is buried in the Alden Cemetery with his wife, Genevieve Black Woodbury, who died in 1930. They had married in Chicago on June 5, 1914.

Lyle left railroading in the late 1920s to become a grocery salesman.

Theodore Davis was born in New York State in 1868. He was a telegrapher in Bristol, Wis. in 1900 but went to Woodstock, Illinois by 1902.

By 1910, he was the agent/telegrapher in Crystal Lake. He held that job until his death on June 18, 1926. Clarence Davis, a son of Theodore, was born in Walworth County, Wis. in 1893.

He was his father’s assistant in Crystal Lake but did not get the position after 1926. He was the agent/telegrapher in Alden, Illinois in the early 1930s.

Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that 37-year-old Markus Hubbell, of McHenry, Ill., was found guilty of grooming, by jury verdict, on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Hubbell was convicted of attempting to entice a 16-year old child to send him explicit photographs in March of 2016. Sentencing is scheduled for March 1, 2019 in front of the Honorable Judge Sharon Prather.

The case was investigated by members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Rita Gara and Randi Freese.

Algonquin Police seeking burglary suspect On Wednesday, Jan. 16, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Algonquin units responded to a report of a Residential Burglary occurring at a residence in the area of Huntington and Dover Court.

The incident was reported to have occurred between approximately 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 16. As of this time, an investigation is underway.

This incident appears to be isolated with no further similar incidents having been reported at this time.

As the incident is under investigation by the Algonquin Police Department anyone having information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Dennis Walker at 847-658-4531. However, no further information is available as this is an active investigation.

Two arrested for weapons, drug charges The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force (which includes Task Force Officers from Woodstock PD, McHenry City PD, and Lake in the Hills PD) arrested Michael Pozsgay, 29, and Toni Josephson, 19, both of Rolling Meadows, following a week-long investigation.

On Jan. 9, 2019, Task Force members arrested Pozsgay and Josephson after conducting a traffic stop in Lake in the Hills area. A search was conducted and cannabis, two firearms, and ammunition were among the items located inside the vehicle.

At the conclusion of the investigation, detectives seized approximately 1,750 grams of Cannabis; two semi -automatic handguns with magazines and ammunition; and $5,237 in cash. The estimated street value of the illegal drugs seized is $35,000.

Callers can remain anonymous and may be

1922 wedding portrait of Ben Francis Welisek Jr. and Anna Muska Welisek of Fox River Grove. Ben Welisek was born in McHenry County on June 17, 1898 to Illinois born parents. His grandparents were born in Bohemia. He was well known in Fox River Grove as a skilled electrician.

He attended grade school at the old Oak Glen School which stills stands (as a private home) on Algonquin Road. His wife, born Anna Muska, was born in Chicago on January 29, 1902. They married in McHenry County.

Ben Welisek was responsible for the subdivision of lots on the northeastern portion of Fox River Grove. The homestead property was later sold to the Pocel family. Ben became President of the Fox River Grove Lions Club in 1949 and served one year in that position. Ben Welisk died in McHenry County on February 26, 1962. His wife died on 15 November 1994. They are buried together in the St. John Nepomucene Cemetery located to the southwest of Fox River Grove on Algonquin Road (where many of Fox River Grove’s early ethnic Bohemian settlers are buried).

This fall, Harmony submitted its yearbook into the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Crown Awards competition for the first time. The expert panel reviewed the 2017-18 “Revival” yearbook, and the staff received the honor of a gold medalist title, earning 872 out

of 1,000 points for its verbal, visual, and reference content.

Creating an award-winning book is a Herculean task that the Harmony staff is fiercely proud of. The smallbut-mighty group of dedicated students works tirelessly year-round to take photos, conduct interviews, write articles, design a concrete theme concept, advertise, document,

and construct layouts.

Such a feat takes more than just the small class. The Harmony Yearbook crew also takes the form of a club of students who put in time after school every week to work towards the annual goal of completing the book.

The staff is always looking for new members of any interests,

background, and availability. High school students are strongly encouraged to consider signing up to take the Yearbook Production course for either a semester or the entire year. Additionally, students are welcome to join the club any Wednesday in W1309 after school or by stopping into the classroom seventh hour any day.

MCHS dance program adds classes, offers showcase For the McHenry High School dance program, the recent Dance Showcase that drew a full audience is not only the culmination of a semester of dance education but also a sign of the program’s transformation.

Not only has the number of dance classes offered doubled, but now school officials are considering having two performances of the showcase, said Colleen Eddy, physical education and dance instructor. The 410-seat auditorium at West Campus was packed for the Dec. 7 show.

Eddy, who also directs the Orchesis Dance Company, said sometimes she’s still amazed at how the program has changed since she took it over in 2015. For the first time, the district offered an advanced dance class this year as a physical education option.

Eddy, a dancer herself who participated in high school dance teams, said there were two dance classes when she took over the pro-

gram. Now there are four.

Staging two Saturday performances at the end of the semester, rather than one on Friday, would take the program to a new level. “It has changed a whole bunch,” Eddy said.

Dance is one of several physical education options for McHenry High School District 156 students.

Class includes warm-ups, dance stretch, Hip-Hop and Jazz dances, tap, group dance and a finale.

Eddy said she’s modeled the McHenry dance program after the program at Sycamore High School.

“It is a community event over there,” she added.

It is becoming a community event in McHenry, too. Many of the tickets sold for the Dec. 7 showcase were at the door.

Shawn Brand sentenced to eight years for delivery of a controlled substance Patrick D. Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that 35 year-old Shawn Brand of Wonder Lake, Ill, was sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of delivery of a controlled substance.

On July 5, 2017, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department responded to the home of Jeremy Cac-

camo located at 4517 East Wonder Lake Road. Mr. Caccamo had died as a result of a heroin overdose.

The Sheriff’s Department recovered multiple bags of heroin from Mr. Caccamo’s room. Some of the bags bore the imprint of an orange basketball, while other bags were stamped with the insignia of the Duke University “Blue Devil” bas-

ketball Mascot.

A search of Mr. Caccamo’s cell phone revealed communication with Shawn Brand. The Sheriff’s department interviewed the defendant, Shawn Brand, and he admitted that on July 4th he had delivered two bags of heroin with the “Blue Devil” logo to Mr. Caccamo in exchange for 20 dollars and some hypodermic

needles.

The defendant stated that Mr. Caccamo bought the bags with the orange basketball logos from someone else.

This case was investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Michael Combs and Rita Gara.

Located on the northwest corner of Riverside Drive and Pearl Street, McHenry, J.C. Bickler’s McHenry House, built in 1838, was originally built about where McHenry’s Veterans Park is located.

For a short time before Woodstock became the County Seat, the building served as the county’s first courthouse.

Once the county seat was relocated to Woodstock (Centerville) in 1844, the building was moved to its present location. Horace Long, the new owner, remodeled the building into a hotel in the 1860s and called it the “Mansion House.”

The most well-known owner of the McHenry House was Jacob C. Bickler.

Jacob Bickler’s 1944 obituary states that “For 30 years, he was the owner of the McHenry House, one of the finest hotels in this vicinity.” From this, it is believed that Jacob took ownership of the building about 1911-1913.

Prior to 1920, the McHenry House was a major outlet for the wares of the McHenry Brewery located just west on Pearl Street. Note the sign on the building advertising McHenry Brewery beer.

In this photo, the man in the leather apron on the McHenry Brewing Company truck is Peter Worts. At one time Peter Worts won a $5 bet by picking up a ½ barrel of beer, placing it on his shoulders and walking eastward across the bridge to the other side with it.

It is probable that the bar at the McHenry House continued to serve liquor throughout the 1920s based on the fact that Jacob Bickler was arrested for Prohibition violations by Federal officials on Sept. 3, 1927 along with numerous other individuals.

The charges against Bicker were later nulle processed after the prosecution case was tainted by the disappearance of Alford Pouse, the McHenry County State’s Attorney. Bickler retired from managing the McHenry House in 1939.

The building still functions as a tavern under the name of the Town Club.

When life stinks…it’s still pretty good! Come meet me, please!

Way back in 2008, I self-published my first book. It wasn’t my first book, but it was MY first book. I had been ghostwriting books for others, but I could not disclose any of those authors or topics. Finally with enough urging from family, friends, and editors, I decided to put something out into the world in book form that had my name on it. The quick and easy way to do so: a collection of some favorite newspaper columns.

This weekly column started in May 2001 so even back then there was a lot to cull from. A throwaway line from one essay about raising boys - when life stinks, it’s time to wash the gym clothes - became the title.

The day the first box of my books was delivered was surreal. It was also the day I received my proof copy of a

book I had written for another author, a man who already had a large audience.

Holding both books in my hand made me feel elated and….strange.

My little book was a thing of joy for me. I knew my mom would be thrilled to finally have a book I wrote that she could show her friends. And yet here was this other book, a thick hardcover with a man’s picture on it, a semifamous man in some circles, and he was smugly smiling with confidence.

The words inside were all mine. The content ideas were not my doing, but the creativity, readability, and eloquent wordsmithing were all me. That book went on to sell 3 million copies.

Just so you know, that’s a lot.

And it’s a feather in my cap.

letting go of ghostwriting and doing more with our Joyful Living Institute.

I love being coach, mentor, guide, intuitive healer.

And out of the blue, I get asked to do an author event to kick off the new year at the Barnes & Noble in Rockford, IL (my hometown), for that old book, my first book, When Life Stinks. That is crazy. Crazy wonderful.

So I am inviting you to please join me. You may have bought that book a long time ago, and I am grateful. I see this opportunity to meet and hug as many people as possible. (And there will be chocolate!) My amazing wonderful career all started because YOU read this newspaper column.

Don’t look for shortcuts to God

Somewhere I read that rolling a tennis ball under your foot was good for back and foot pain. Since a tennis ball is kind of soft and it doesn’t really feel like one is doing much of anything, I thought I would help the process along.

You know, speed things up a little, increase the effect, be more efficient.

So my bright idea was to use a golf ball instead. It’s much harder than a tennis ball and would get me some results a lot quicker, so I presumed.

For several days I was really going to town with this golf ball. Each time I sat down at my computer I would roll it under the bottom of my foot on the hard floor. I pushed harder and harder envisioning all this bad connective tissue being stretched and massaged to bring about all kinds of great health benefits.

Well, after a few days of this new exercise, I began to feel some sharp pain under my right foot, and a couple days later I could hardly walk it hurt so bad. I think what happened is that I actually injured the connective tissue on the bottom of my foot, and instead of making my back and feet feel better, I now am having difficulty just walking around.

It sure is a pain, pun intended, getting older.

The other morning as eight of my dairy cows were standing side by side in the parlor contentedly being milked, the cow at the end took her long nose and tongue and gently nudged the latch of the gate open.

attached to their udders. Before I could get them stopped and the gate closed, four half-milked cows had escaped and the other four had moved down towards the open gate, pulling all the milking machines off of their udders landing on the floor and creating quite a stir in the parlor.

I quickly shut the vacuum off on each machine, reattached a milker to the four cows that were still in line, and then headed right out to the barn to bring the four escapees back to finish their milking.

Here’s the thing, once the cows walk into the barn from the milking parlor they aren’t too interested in returning to the parlor as they think their work is done and they are ready to eat some feed and relax for a few hours.

So there I was trying to herd these four cows back to the holding pen when one of the cows tried to make a break for the far end of the barn. As I turned and tried to push off quickly on my right foot, the pain shot up through my body and I went down, splat, right in the middle of the barn aisle.

I got up, brushed myself off and limped to the far end of the barn to bring her back, muttering under my breath how much I loved her.

Thankfully I wear coveralls when I milk so all I had to do was throw them into a wash tub of hot water

in the milkhouse scrub them off and hang them up to dry.

That’s been a couple days ago and I’m happy to report that my foot is starting to feel better. Needless to say I stopped rolling anything under my foot as I sit at my computer. It’s taken my a few years, but I’m learning that short cuts are not always the best way to get where we want to go. There certainly are no shortcuts to God. His way is the only way. In the gospel of John Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”.

In Matthew 7:13 we also read; “Don’t look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do.

Life goes on

I used to worry. About a lot of things.

I used to worry about what other people had and what I didn’t and then I realized I didn’t use or need half of what I had anyway and life went on.

I used to worry that I wasn’t old enough and then I woke up one morning and worried maybe I was too old and I saw the lack of logic in that and decided I was simply the perfect age, right here, right now, and besides it’s all I was capable of being. And life went on.

I used to worry about a clean house. I still do, sometimes, I guess, but a dirty house is no indication of the level of happiness inside. A dirty house indicates living. Living is good. It’s a lot better than merely existing in a perfectly clean house.

I used to worry about impressing people and then I came to understand that it isn’t what others think of me, but what I think of myself.

I used to worry about acquiring more things. Now I worry about how I’m going to get rid of things and live with less clutter and more clarity.

I used to worry about expressing my viewpoints and opinions because they might not line up with someone else’s and that would cause discord.

discord or at least ignore it and not let it own me. I realized there is no possible way to please everyone so I might as well just be myself, and go on with life in the best way I know how.

I used to worry about the future and then the future became the now and I came to understand that everything unfolds at its own pace with its own plan and ruminating about it isn’t going to change anything. It is only going to change me – in a negative way by stealing time and energy that is better spent in other ways to help life move forward.

I used to worry about bad things happening and then I learned to count the things I am grateful for and I found I always have more gratitude than bad possibilities, so it’s easier, actually, to be grateful than to worry.

I used to worry about finding happiness or achieving contentment and then I realized they are things no one can find or achieve. We can’t find them in another person,

experience or inanimate object.

They are choices inside each of us.

They aren’t bestowed upon us; we bestow them upon ourselves.

I used to worry that others were smarter than me, richer than me, better looking than me, faster than me, more hip than me and all things better than me and I realized that even if this were true, which it probably is, that it was okay because my life is my life and I’m pretty used to it the way it is and being smarter, brighter, richer or better looking isn’t all that important anyway. I’ve got what I need.

I used to worry about writing this column every week. What if the words dried up at some point? Now I realize there will be a day when the words are absent and it will be time to move on to other things and that will be okay. For now, I’m thankful that I still have things to say.

I used to worry about worrying and that maybe I worried too much and I decided it was probably true, but the only remedy was to stop myself in my own tracks. So I did, finally, and life went on, as usual.

From the Postcard Collection: Mackeben Berry Patch, Huntley, circa 1911-12. Mr. & Mrs. Hergott are seen working on the berry farm.

Making a life in McHenry County The Mackebens came to Illinois when they emigrated to the U.S. from Germany. Heinrich (1825-1888) and Maria Mackeben made the seven-week journey to the new world in 1865 and settled in Plum Grove, later moving to Lake Zurich.

In 1872, they, along with their children, moved just west of Huntley close to Harmony and established a dairy farm there.

Their son Henry (1863-1937) eventually took over the dairy farm and in 1901 moved his family to the house on Main St. in Huntley.

Starting in 1910, he ran a berry farm at this site, which stretched from his house all the way back to Donahue Woods. The property where the berries were grown would eventually become a school (con-

structed around 1956).

His two children, Harley and Ida, became very well known in town, and the berry farm outlasted Henry before the property was later developed. The 1870’s house and carriage house still stands in wonderful condition at 12107 W. Main St in Huntley. Genealogy information courtesy of Jake Marino.

With another blast of cold temperatures and more snow set to hit the state later this week, frozen pipes have the potential to be an issue this winter.

A quarter-million families across the U.S. suffer from frozen pipe damage each winter. According to 2017 data, State Farm® paid more claims in Illinois (348) for winter water losses (including frozen pipes and ice dams) than any other state in the U.S. The total pay-out for Illinois claims in 2017 reached nearly $10,000,000, with the average cost per claim being just under $29,000.

State Farm provides the following tips to prevent frozen pipes from happening during the winter months: When temperatures drop: Insulate pipes that run along outside walls, floors and ceilings in your home’s crawl spaces and attic. Exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing.

Disconnect outside garden hoses and, if possible, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets.

Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located.

A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.

Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night.

Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.

Before you travel: Set the thermostat in your house no lower than 55°F (12°C).

Ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure it’s warm enough to prevent freezing.

Shut off and drain the water system.

If you experience frozen pipes: If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber.

Do not use electrical appliances in areas of standing water to avoid electrocution.

Never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame because it could cause a fire hazard.

You may be able to thaw a frozen pipe using a hair dryer.

Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest section of pipe.

If your water pipes have already burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house; leave the water faucets turned on. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the water shutoff valve is and how to open and close it.
