Defending the environment for 50 years Fifty years ago a group of concerned people started an organization called Defenders of The Fox River. The group, soon joined by a new chapter in Crystal Lake, made it their mission to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our environment, and specifically at that time in answer to the threat of development of the Fox Valley Freeway. From a historical communication: “In October, 1969, the Defenders of the Fox River, Inc. was formed for the purposes stated on the enclosed sheet (*see below). Its members include many talented and dedicated people from the Algonquin-Barrington area. In the course of the past three months, the Defenders have become well organized as an effective action group and have accomplished a great deal. Many of us have expressed concern over the environmental problems threatening our area, and as a result a local branch of the Defenders is now being formed to represent the Crystal Lake-McHenry-Woodstock region. It is our belief that we will be more effective as part of a single strong organization than as one of a number of small weak groups.” *“To help bridge the gap between the natural sciences and the environmental planning professions. “To aid in procuring and furnishing information and data to any agencies planning projects that conform to the basic criterion that ecology is the sensible guide to planning for man. “To expend energy and effort in disseminating the principle that

highways, roads and other engineering works must reflect, in location and design, increased respect for the natural, ecological and social integrity of the landscape and the communities through which they pass.
“To offer resistance to planning based upon design, economic, engineering and transportation concepts that consider natural processes only coincidentally, partially or indirectly. “To defend the position that certain kinds of lands, when left in or
are returned to their natural condition may be more valuable as natural space than as developed space – that open space should be reserved in advance of development on the basis of systematic ecological inventory.
“To help save natural beauty from being the victim of the bulldozer. “To broaden the vision of citizens through education and to help make their voices heard in this, the most serious crisis of our times – the deterioration of our environment. “To convey the urgency of this situation to public servants, elected officials and others making decisions that affect the quality of our environment.” Thus began The McHenry County Defenders (today known as the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County), which formed from The Defenders of the Fox River and a group of concerned citizens in Woodstock called the McHenry County Environmental Council. In addition to its office in Woodstock, the organization owns and operates two reused bookstores, The Green Spot and The Green Read, and owns eight acres of land on Dean Street in Woodstock, site of ongoing restoration projects. The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County relies on passionate, motivated volunteers and members to help meet its mission and vision for a healthy environment in McHenry County. The Environmental Defenders is inclusive of all who wish to work together to make a positive impact on our environment and its future. In addition to other special events throughout 2020, on March 8, The Environmental Defenders will hold a special 50th Anniversary Dinner with proceeds going toward student scholarships and internships.
Pullman car Pawnee comes to railway museum The Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) is pleased to announce that it has acquired the historic Pullman private car Pawnee. The car arrived at the museum on its own wheels on Thursday, Dec. 12. This historic railroad car was built in 1930 and is the second-tolast traditional “heavyweight” private car ever built by the Pullman Company of Chicago. The museum is raising funds to cover the acquisition and transportation of this car to IRM as well as the long-term housing and restoration of the car (click here for more information). The Pawnee was built for Harry Payne Bingham, a financier, sportsman, and philanthropist. Bingham’s father was the president of Standard Tool Company in Ohio. His maternal grandfather was Henry Payne, U.S. senator from Ohio between 1885 and 1891, while his paternal grandfather was William Bingham, president of the Cleveland Iron Company. Harry Bingham lived in New York City and was an acquaintance of John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler, the latter a heavy investor in real estate in Florida. Bingham ordered the Pawnee from Pullman for deluxe private transportation between New York City and Palm Beach in Florida. Later on in the car’s life, after it was sold by the Bingham family, it was refurbished by Pullman as Western Union Telegraph Company number 100. The Pawnee is in excellent and largely original condition. It will be a standout addition to the Illi-
nois Railway Museum’s collection of historic railway cars, representing the “last hurrah” of golden-age luxury rail travel by the moguls of industry and finance before the advent of the jet age. The museum intends to restore the Pawnee and operate the car on its demonstration railroad. Fundraising is underway to pay for the car’s transportation to IRM’s campus in Union. Click here to donate towards the preservation of this historic car.

Cary Police Department cites scam reports In the past two months the Cary Police Department has received several reports from victims of various scams. In each incident, the victim(s) were impacted financially. Due to this recent activity, the Cary Police Department wishes to remind residents of the importance of remaining vigilant while monitoring their personal finances, as well as remaining guarded to “fast cash” scenarios that typically seem too good to be true. One scam offered a victim com-
pensation for acting as a secret shopper. The victim received a check and was instructed to purchase gift cards with a portion of the money. The victim was instructed to send the gift card access codes via email, and in exchange they could keep the remainder of the balance of the check. Once the check was deposited into the victim’s account, it was determined the check was fraudulent and the victim lost the money he used to purchase the gift cards.
Another incident involved a victim receiving an email which appeared to be a legitimate correspondence from an organization they were conducting business with. The email advised the victim there was a change in payment terms and instructed the victim to wire the funds instead of having a cashier’s check drafted. The email was fraudulent, and the funds were received by an unknown third party. Other scams have involved the victim’s credit card and/or checking
account information being compromised. To avoid becoming a victim, regularly monitor your credit card activity and bank accounts. Information regarding common scams can be found at the Illinois Attorney General’s website at www. illinoisattorneygeneral.gov, and also on the Federal Trade Commission’s website at www.consumer.ftc.gov. The Cary Police Department’s Investigations Section is able to answer questions and can be reached at 847-639-2341.
