As a Chicago beat cop, a teacher, a tireless assistant principal or whichever path he chose, Ron Bendis was destined to make a positive difference in the lives of the people he encountered. Fortunately, for Woodstock High School and the surrounding community, he decided to make his mark here where Ron’s empathy and dedication has impacted thousands of students, staff and community members. “At the community level, including this school district, we have all benefited from Ron Bendis,” retired WHS teacher John Headley said. “He always put forth his best effort, whether it was at the high school, as the assistant principal or today when he volunteers at the food pantry or at his church.” The District 200 Education Foundation is proud to announce Ron Bendis as the recipient of the 2018 Susan Palmore Award of Excellence. Bendis will be honored at the Annual Groundhog Day Dinner on Saturday,

could have a larger impact on young people by being proactive in their lives instead of dealing with the consequences later. He began his teaching career in Ottawa, Illinois in 1975 before he and his wife Deb moved to Woodstock, where they raised their two children Matthew and Ann. Ron started as a teacher in Woodstock in 1982 before being named assistant principal, a job he performed with distinction for the next 26 years. In 2009, the Illinois Principals Association named Ron the Assistant Principal of the Year. Bendis, whose responsibilities included student discipline, is remembered for his calm voice, as one who listened closely before speaking and who always believed in the dignity of students and in the worthy cause of helping them develop as human beings. “Ron’s blend of toughness, empathy, humor, and commitment is a model for administrators,” said Corey Tafoya, former Woodstock High School principal. “He never cared about the student’s background or excuses why they couldn’t do it. He forced them to believe in themselves even when everyone else had given up.” Headley, who nominated Ron for this year’s honor, said he was always impressed with Ron’s ability to put students at ease even when they walked into his office visibly upset. “He has a thick skin and broad shoul-

ders, nothing seemed to rattle him. Ron simply solved problems.” Longtime Woodstock High School teacher Gordie Tebo said he’s often seen former students approach Ron in public to thank him for helping them get through high school with a mixed apology and pride in their accomplishments since. “The best students in our schools always have the support of the teachers and the administration,” Tebo said, “Ron, however, was the advocate for those students who found navigating through school a difficult journey.” In addition to the countless one-on-

one impacts Ron made on students, he also left a lasting impression by instituting the Academy of Changes, a computer-based system at the high school that helps students who are lagging in credits make up the shortcoming so they can graduate. Ron retired from Woodstock Community School District 200 in 2009 but continues to serve the community by volunteering at the Woodstock Food Pantry, delivering Meals on Wheels and preparing meals for the PADS homeless shelter. The D200 Educational Foundation award is named after Susan Palmore who exemplified service to her community in her roles as a District 200 Board of Education member and member of the D200 Education Foundation. The Education Foundation renamed the Award of Excellence honor after Palmore’s death in 2012 to continue her legacy. Past recipients include: Bud Swartout (2011); Barb Banker (2012); Bill Schuette (2013); Jim Campion (2014); Miguel Rodriguez (2015); Joy Aavang (2016) and John Van Fleet (2017.) The award will be presented to Ron Bendis at the Foundation’s Annual Groundhog Dinner and Auction on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at Woodstock Harley-Davidson. Tickets for the event are available on the Foundation’s website at http://d200edfoundation.org and at the D200 District office.
