Chicago & North Western Depot, Marengo, circa 1905.

Marengo Depot originated in 1864 The Marengo depot and railroad grounds were once located in the municipal lot (Municipal Drive) south of Marengo Tool and Die Company. In March of 1851 a group of local businessmen sold bonds to finance a railroad to serve Marengo. The Marengo depot was built for the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad (Chicago & North Western Railroad by 1864). An addition was added to the depot in 1873. The depot had three large rooms – passenger waiting area, dispatcher’s office and baggage and freight room. The passenger waiting area was complete with benches and chairs,

two brass spittoons, a large potbellied stove and reading materials. The dispatcher’s office contained a chalk slate announcing the arrival and departure times of trains. The baggage and freight room housed all types of weighing scales including a four wheeled hand drawn wagon used to haul mail sacks and bundles of newspapers. To the east of the depot was a hand-operated water pump for public use, a pump shed and outhouses. A huge wooden water storage tank was also built to fill the steam engine boilers. A coal and oil house was built on the depot

grounds in 1890. Note the milk cans waiting on the platform in the photo. A milk train from Chicago dropped off empty milk cans at noon and picked up full train cars from the Borden plant at 6 p.m. The depot was especially busy between 1883 and 1912 when a special train from Chicago known as the “Opera Special” pulled into Marengo during the heyday of the Marengo Opera House season (BMO Harris Bank building). The depot building was dismantled in 1966, moved and reassembled at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union.

1843 Log cabin relocated

The Gannon log cabin is transported from the McHenry County fairgrounds to its new home in front of the MCHS Museum in Union in 1980. It is pictured here on South Street in Woodstock. The cabin was built in 1843 by Luke Gannon, northwest of Huntley. Edward Gannon, a grandson of Luke Gannon, donated it to MCHS in the 1960s. It was kept at the fairgrounds until MCHS had a permanent location in Union.
