Albany couple endow agricultural scholarship A new scholarship aims to help students studying agriculture at Blackhawk Technical College. Wayne and Janet Albertson of Albany will endow the scholarship, which will be awarded through the BTC Foundation. Graduating high school seniors enrolling in a BTC agriculture program — either an agribusiness/science and technology associate program or an agricultural-related technical diploma program — will be eligible to apply for the scholarship. “We felt that Blackhawk Technical College has a great selection of courses to offer students with varying interests,” the Albertsons said in a news release. The scholarship will be renewable to the same student recipient for two consecutive semesters (such as fall and spring semesters) pending the student’s re-enrollment with the college in the same or similar agriculture-related program. The Albertsons are both graduates of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where Jan graduated as an X-ray technician and Wayne graduated with an agricultural degree. Over the years they raised three children on Wayne Albertson’s longtime family farm and joined forces in the real estate

business when Jan earned her real estate license and Wayne became an auctioneer. Both are still active in their careers and enjoy giving back to the agriculture profession, the release said. “Agriculture has become a business and has expanded in several new fields as technology has exploded,” Wayne Albertson said. “The opportunity for young and older adults with a degree is unlimited.” Endowing the scholarship is something that brings the Albertsons great satisfaction, the release said. “What gives us joy is seeing students obtaining continuing education in a field of their choice and getting a degree in that field,” the Albertsons said. “By having scholarships, the opportunity for further education is greatly enhanced.” “We are grateful to the Albertsons for trusting the foundation with this life-changing gift that will benefit agriculture students for years to come,” said Lisa Hurda, BTC foundation director. For more information about scholarship opportunities or to make a financial gift, contact the Blackhawk foundation at 608- 757-7704 or lhurda@black hawk.edu.

ReadyWisconsin offers tools for disaster preparedness September is Preparedness Month, and officials at ReadyWisconsin are encouraging parents and educators to help protect children by teaching them how to be prepared for the unexpected. “It’s never too early for kids to learn what they should do during an emergency,” Wisconsin Emergency Management Acting Administrator Greg Engle said in a news release. “During Preparedness Month, families should teach their children about the possi-

ble dangers in their community, and then include them in the process of creating emergency plans and practicing them.” “Parents should talk to their children about what to do if there is an emergency at home, school or day care,” the release said. “Make sure they know who to contact and identify a safe meeting place. Put together a supply kit and have them help identify what items should go inside.” To find tips for building an

emergency kit, go online to readywisconsin.wi.gov/makea-kit. In the classroom, ReadyWisconsin makes available the Student Tools for Emergency Planning (STEP) program curriculum for fourthand fifth-grade classrooms. The curriculum, developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is available at no cost to educators. Participating schools are also provided with materials to help students build their 403618

own emergency kits. The STEP program is funded with financial support from AT&T. “Since it began in Wisconsin, STEP has helped over 85,000 children in the state learn about the importance of planning for emergencies,”

Engle said. “Wisconsin Emergency Management is proud to continue offering this important program to teachers and students.” Fourth and fifth-grade teachers interested in offering the STEP program in their schools during the spring of

2022 can find registration information online at readywisconsin.wi.gov/step. For more safety tips, follow ReadyWisconsin on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ readywisconsin) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/readywis consin).
