The October meeting for the Green County Board will be held on the third Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m.in the County Board room on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse on the square in Monroe.

The proposed 2018 budget will be distributed to the board at that time so it can be looked over and be voted on at the November County Board meeting.

If you have any questions or concerns about the county budget, and where your tax dollars are going, contact your County Board Supervisor. My experience with the budget is that our tax dollars are used efficiently and effectively, with a conscientious eye on the bottom line.

When the county-wide CAFO moratorium passed in August, a study group was formed to study the effects of CAFOs. The members of the study group were announced at the September County Board meeting, and they are getting started on their work.

The Livestock Facility Study Group will be meeting Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 12:30 p.m. at the Green County Justice Center, in multipurpose room 1.

According to the agenda they will be discussing the scope, process and purpose of the study group, as well as open meeting laws, meeting times, ground rules and presentation topics.

There will be a presentation

by DATCP (Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection) at this meeting. The meeting is open to the public, and you are welcome to attend.

Several other committees are meeting over the next couple of weeks. You can find the schedule and agendas on the Green County site at www.co.green. wi.gov.

The Wisconsin DNR held a public hearing regarding the issuance of a WPDES permit (Wisconsin Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) to the Tuls/ Bader project of Pinnacle Dairy.

The hearing was held Friday September 15 and there was quite a large turn out at the Albany Lions Club where it was held. The public was encouraged to comment, and for those who were unable to attend or did not want to speak at the hearing, written comments were being accepted until Friday, Sept. 22.

Written comments were to be entered into the meeting record and weighed as heavily as oral comments. A range of views was expressed at the hearing, but the majority of those were concerned with the safety of our water especially if the permit is granted. The DNR said they are hoping to have a decision about the permit by the beginning of October.

The Albany Comets cross country teams participated in the Golden Eagles Relays last Saturday. The girls team placed second with a total time of 120:57.1 edging Hillsboro. The boys team placed sixth with a team time of 104:28.9 in the small school division.

Senior Emma Guenther earned sixth in the first runners race with a time of 22:46.3. She was second overall in the small school division.

In the boys first runner race junior Josh Dahl took fifth in a time of 18:27.6. Dahl also finished in third overall in the small school division for the Comets.

Junior Megan Anderson captured seventh in a time of 23:59.8 in the second runner race. Senior Logun Parke placed 13th with a time of 20:46.4.

Senior Garrett Hlavachek earned 14th in a time of 21:37.1 in the third runner race.

In the seventh runner race sophomore Haley Knauf took third at 25:04.2. Sophomore Josef Schirgi captured 14th in a time of 24:34.6.

Dr. Wilmer Pautz of Altoona, Wisconsin recently marked his 90th birthday. To celebrate this special event of September 26, his relatives hosted dinners in Green Bay and Beloit.

In the 1950s Dr. Pautz was a teacher in the area high schools of Brooklyn, Juda and Monroe. At Juda he also served as the district administrator. After receiving his doctorate, he joined, in sequence, the faculties of Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, the American Junior High School, Frankfurt, Germany and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. As a professor of education at UWEC, he completed a 30-year tenure preparing students to become teachers.

A good deed, bound for Houston

Janet Cook spearheaded a collection taken up for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Tex. Throughout September. Collections were taken at Brodhead storage and Fib’s North, and from there were placed in a pod in Lake Geneva, Wis., where they will head south to a church outside of Houston.

ALL SCHOOL REUNION The All School Reunion was held on Sunday. There was a great turnout, and all of the attendants enjoyed touring the new and improved Juda School.

OPEN HOUSE The Open House last Wednesday was a great success. There was many people in attendance during the ceremony and self-guided tours.

Some of our Findorff Associates during the summer, as well as the Juda School Board, were in attendance at the ceremony. The Juda School was also rewarded with a $10,000 Monsanto Grant to help improve our STEAM activities for upcoming years.

BLOOD DRIVE Thank you to everyone who came and donated blood on Tuesday. A total of 35 pints is needed each blood drive in order to give out $2,500 in scholarships to seniors. The next blood drive will be held on Tuesday, November 21.

BIG BROTHERS, BIG SISTERS Another year of Big Brothers, Big Sisters is being organized. A letter will be sent home with all students in the elementary. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters will consist of high school students and some middle school students. They will meet once a week during flex period. The Bigs will offer academic and social support.

NHS OFFICERS The 2017-18 officers are President: Hailey Kammerer, Vice President: Trent Davis, Secretary: Rachel McCullough, Treasurer: Quinton Kammerer, and PR: Nicole Kamholz and Taylor Adkins. Other NHS members include: Nickole Becker, Karlee Kessler, and Jacob Mahlkuch.

THE WIZARD OF OZ Musical performances will take place November 3-5. Friday and Saturday’s performances will begin at 7p.m., and Sunday’s performance will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available in the office a week before the performances.

HOMECOMING Homecoming week is September 25 through 30. The theme this year is Out of This World. The dress-up themes for Homecoming week are Monday: Pajama Day, Tuesday: Stereotype Day, Wednesday: Class T-Shirt Day or Extraterrestrial Day, Thursday: Blast to the Past or the Future, Friday: Spirit Day. Student council will be organizing games during Flex on Tuesday, September 26, and the Pep Rally on Friday, September 29. Powder Puff will be on Wednesday, September 27, at 6:15 p.m. King and Queen will be announced during Powder Puff. The homecoming parade in Brodhead is on Friday, September 29, at 4 p.m., as well as the Brodhead-Juda football game at 7 p.m. against Whitewater. Court will be announced before the game on Friday. The homecoming dance will be held on September 30.

PICTURE DAY The Juda School will be holding their Picture Day on September 28 in the Pit Gym starting at 8:00 a.m and ending around 10:30 a.m. We are asking that students bring in their packet before September 26 to ensure that they will be able to get their picture taken. Grade school teachers will hold their students’ packets, but high school students are responsible for their own packets. If a student does not bring their packet, their pictures can also be purchased online. If a student needs to bring cash, they can have the office hold it for them until picture day.

SEASON PASSES Season passes are used for home

football games, home volleyball games, and home girls’ and boys’ basketball games. They can be purchased in the school office: $30 for students and $40 for adults.

VOLLEYBALL September 14, Juda won against Monticello in 4 sets. Mackenzie Byrne had 34 assists and 14 digs. Erika Ducker had 11 kills, and fellow player Hannah Powers had 3 aces.

September 19, Juda travelled and lost to Argyle in 4 sets. Maddie Roth had a team best of 8 kills, helping Mackenzie Byrne finish with 18 assists. Erika Duecker and Karlee Kesler had 4 aces. Montana Steinmann had 9 digs, and fellow player Hailey Kammerer had 2 blocks.

CROSS COUNTRY The next Cross Country meet will be held on Saturday, September 30, in Platteville.

STUDENT COUNCIL The Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, September 30. The doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and Grand March will be start at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for couples and $3 for singles.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FIELD TRIP On Friday, September 22, the Juda Middle School Students attended a performance at the Monroe Middle School. How to Survive Middle School, was put on by the Emmy award-winning comedian Robert Post. It focused on peer pressure, social media, testing, and bullying. In this performance, students are talking to students in a compelling, funny, and educational way. The presentation was broken up into nine different parts, starting first with a preview of Post’s life of performing and touring on the road. After that, he talked about how hard school was for him because he, himself, has learning disabilities. He shared videos about the realities of life

in middle school, the honest sides of social media, high school students sharing their memories as middle school students, as well as pictures of other middle school students. Performances included his pieces, “A Rather Unfortunate Evening for Burglar Burt,” “Shticks,” and “Pasquale’s Kitchen.”

SPANISH CLUB A reminder that if anybody wants to join Spanish Club, a $5 due must be brought to the next meeting or given to Mrs. Williams. At the Spanish Club meeting Tuesday, September 19, concession dates were announced, and they discussed future fundraiser ideas. The Club also voted on t-shirt ideas.

STEAM The engineering class is finalizing their choice of what 3D printer to purchase using the Monsanto grant of $10,000.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT There will be a pep assembly Friday, September 29, at 1:00 p.m. The middle school and high school band will leave after school to march in the Brodhead Homecoming Parade at 4:00 p.m. There will be a pizza party after the parade for high school band members. Each high school band member needs to bring $5 to Mrs. Fox for pizza.

ART DEPARTMENT Last week the kindergarten class continued working on cutting, pasting, and shapes. The first graders finished their Romare Bearden project and began a jungle collage.

Second grade had a painting day using warm and cool colors and continued working on weaving. The third graders reviewed collagraphs, while the fourth graders started learning about tessellation. The fifth graders talked about one point perspectives, and the sixth graders continued working on their Egyptian artwork. The high schoolers finished up their weeblys.

REC. DISTRICT The Juda Rec. District is sponsoring another session of Zumba.

The session started on Tuesday, September 12. Classes will be held in the new Pit Gym starting at 5:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.

Day care services will be provided.

JUDA ELEMENTARY The students are settling in nicely to their new rooms. They are excited for the new school year!

FFA National FFA Convention Applications are available now. The convention will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 25-28. There is a trip available to people interested in Construction as a career. The trip is on October 12, and it is to Cullen Construction. Sectional Leadership Workshop is coming up and is available to all FFA members. This trip will be help on October 10.

MATH Mr. Anderson is trying out a new math teaching program called Mathalicious after going out on a limb and asking for a free trial. It is typically around $800 for the program.

MATH TEAM Math team will be attending the annual math meet in Platteville on November 2. Students will have practice during flex hour at the end of the day on Thursdays and Fridays.

LUNCH Thursday, September 28, breakfast will be toast and sausage; lunch will be spaghetti, meatballs, green beans, garlic bread, and applesauce.

Friday, September 29, breakfast will be long johns; lunch will be hamburgers, fries, and mixed fruit.

Bethlehem Lutheran offering children’s ministry

Bethlehem Lutheran’s continuing weekly ministry called “Faith Night” begins on Wednesday, Sept 27. Faith Night runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday night.

What is Faith Night? One way to think of it is food, fellowship, worship, learning, and service in Jesus’ name.

Another way to think of it is a smaller version of VBS (vacation bible school) offered each Wednesday.

We begin each Wednesday by offering a simple, kid-friendly meal. Families are encouraged to come and eat together. Following our meal, we will gather for worship, songs, prayer, and a bible story. We will also have time for smaller groups in which the kids will pray together and engage in a craft, game, service project, and/or other hands-on

activity related to the bible story.

Children through sixth grade are welcome to join. We will continue to offer a shorter session for our toddlers to 4K children. This group will meet until 6:30.

Parents will need to be present with their child. The group will work on some very basic skills, listen to a story, play a game, and practice sharing.

We hope that you will consider joining us on Wednesday nights as we grow in faith and relationship to God, to one another, and to the world.

Parkview Viking Youth Cross Country Race-a-Palooza The Parkview High School Cross Country team invites youth kindergarten or younger through sixth grade to take part in their annual Cross Country Race-a-Palooza on Saturday, September 30, with registration starting at 8:00 a.m. and the first race starting at 8:30 a.m. The registration table will be located near the restroom/team building at the Parkview High School track/ football field.

This is a cross country style race with four runs divided by run distance/ age. Girls and boys run together and cross country team members lead each race at the fastest runners pace and have members who will run with the runners at the end of the pack as well.

page, or starting at 8 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the track.

Race distances are approximate and will be run on cross country style courses. The race times and distances are: 8:30 a.m. - Kindergarten (and younger) – approximately ¼ mile; 8:40 a.m. - 1st/2nd graders – approximately ½ mile; 8:55 a.m. - 3rd/4th graders – approximately ¾ mile and 9:10am - 5th/6th graders – approximately 1 mile.

Women’s fitness class offered in Orfordville

Healthy Ladies Fitness provides an economical, fun, interactive exercise class that brings women together at Orfordville Lutheran Church to share an interest in becoming healthy. Healthy Ladies Fitness is a low impact exercise class that uses hand weights and body weight exercises to build/maintain muscle strength for improving balance and flexibility in women at any age.

There is an elevator for accessing the basement and classes are held at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and 6 p.m. on Thursdays at Orfordville Lutheran Church, 210 N. Main St., Orfordville. The fee for 24 classes is 36 dollars, or two dollars for a drop in class. A new session is starting Tuesday, Oct. 3.

Orfordville implementing yard waste site changes The yard waste site in the Village of Orfordville will have some changes effective Sunday, Oct 1.

Effective Sunday Oct. 1, 2017, the yard waste site will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The yard waste site is now gated and will only be open on the three days mentioned above. Do not leave your yard waste in front of the gate on the days it is not open.

The Village is restricting the hours due to increased amounts of yard waste being brought in from outside the Village. The yard waste site is open to residents of the Village of Orfordville only.

Please only bring yard waste to the site, no dumping of trash. You can bring grass, leaves, flowers, and brush. Brush larger than four inches in diameter is not allowed.

The site is for yard waste and was never intended to be for tree disposal.

Contractors should not bring trees to the yard waste site.

Below are the rules for the yard waste site: 1. This facility may only be used by village residents. Proof of residency may be required before being admitted to the site.

2. Only organic yard waste generated inside the village limits by village residents is allow to be dropped off at this site. Proof that material was generated inside the village limits may be required before drop off is allowed.

3. Tree services and other contractors working for village residents are not considered residents and will not be allow to dispose of any materials at this site.

4. No trash, garbage, building mate-

rials, tires, plastics, landscape timbers or any other non-organic materials shall be dropped off at this site at any time.

Anyone caught doing so shall be fined $1000 for each violation, and shall be required to reclaim any non-compliant material and dispose of it as required by law.

5. All accepted material shall be placed in the appropriate piles, as determined by the Public Works Department. Material shall not be dumped in any other location.

6. The Village of Orfordville reserves the right to refuse entry to any person, at any time, and for any reason, regardless of the material that said person wished to dump, 7. Any person in violation of these rules will be referred to the Orfordville Police Department for enforcement action.

Albany High School adds a few new faces Abigail Bednar

My name is Abigail Bednar. I teach High School English. I have just moved to Fitchburg. I went to Knox College in Illinois - near the quad cities. This will be my 5th year teaching English. I have worked with Gifted/ Talented students and taught ESL. I am particularly passionate about 18th century literature and American Literature I’m from the Midwest originally, and my husband and I wanted to move closer to our family. I was really excited about working at Albany because of the small class sizes and the tight-knit community.

This year I am helping with the Yearbook, and I am also the Forensics Coach. Before this I taught 4 years in Charleston, South Carolina.

Bryce Broughton My name is Bryce Broughton. I teach Tech. Ed. I grew up in Brodhead and still live in Brodhead with my wife Tiffany and two young children Liam 4 and Charleigh 2. Kiara Krohn My name is Kiara Krohn and I am the new speech-language pathologist at Albany School District. I cur-rently live in Evansville with my husband, Zach, and two children, Anika and Liam. This is my eleventh year working as a school-based speech-language pathologist. Previously, I taught in the Orfordville Parkview School District and the Evansville Communi-ty School District. I received my undergraduate and Master’s Degree from UW-Madison.

I am looking forward to being a part of the Albany School District and community this year. I enjoy articulation therapy with students to help them learn to say their speech sounds more clearly.

UW-Whitewater to study Special Education. I graduated this past May from college and this is my first year teaching. I chose to come to Albany because it is a great school. I actually lived in Albany and went to school here for a short time in Kindergarten. Therefore, I am familiar with some of the staff here. Cemetery tours next Saturday

Oakley Union Church will host a cemetery walk on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.

Tour times of noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. will be on offer.

Period-dressed actors will depict in story, glimpses in the lives of Spring Grove residents that made a mark on the community before they died. Each person has a story and the vignettes are designed a tell a bit of their life and also a bit of the area’s history.

Tickets are 10 dollars and include a picnic-style meal. Limited slots are available for each tour time. Tickets are available at Sugar River Banks in Brodhead, Juda and Monroe until Thursday, Oct. 5.

Rep. Spreitzer: Republican budget is ‘rigged’

Longtime resident and local dentist, Dr. Julio Rodriguez, will be sworn in as Trustee of the 9th District of the American Dental Association at the 158th ADA Annual Session House of Delegates on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017 in Atlanta, Ga. Founded in 1859, the not-for-profit American Dental Association is the nation’s largest dental association, representing more than 161,000 dentist members from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The ADA is a member-run organization managed by an elected Board of Trustees and a 480-member House of Delegates.

Dr. Rodriguez served as President of the Wisconsin Dental Association 2013-14 being the first Latino Dentist to be elected to this position in 143 years.

Dr. Rodriguez also currently performs the duties of 9th District Director of the American Dental Association Political Action Committee Board representing Michigan and Wisconsin.

He also functions as the 9th District Regent of the US Section of the International College of Dentists as well as Trustee of the International College of Dentists Foundation – US Section.

Dr. Rodriguez was appointed in 2016 Liaison to Cuba by the International College of Dentists Global Chapter, where he serves as an International Councilor representing the USA section. The International College of Dentists is the world’s oldest and largest Honor Society for Dentists, and has over 12,000 members across 122 countries.

Beyond his work in both professional and charitable dentistry organizations, Dr. Rodriguez is a member of the Brodhead Lions club, the Optimists club, and acts as the Dental Director of the Fowler Free Dental Clinic in Monroe, Wis., where he serves children ages one to 12 that cannot afford dental care.

He is married to Marissa and has three children, David Rodriguez from Brodhead, Dr. Gabriel Rodriguez from Wauwatosa and Elizabeth Rodriguez from Brodhead.

Although Governor Walker and legislative Republicans claimed they lowered taxes while upholding our educational institutions, in reality they simply shifted the burden. Local residents have been forced to increasingly rely on referenda to keep the lights on and doors open in their children’s schools. Increasing funding in this budget does not make up for six years of cuts as costs continue to increase and rural districts face unique challenges.

Wisconsin can do better. Democrats offered a plan to increase aid to every school district, especially rural districts, while still lowering property taxes. Our proposal would also have provided the first increase in special education funding in over a decade. Unfortunately, Republicans rejected our proposal.

Republicans in the legislature also made grand statements about solving our transportation crisis. Our crumbling roads and bridges impact nearly every resident in our state, and I regularly hear from constituents about the hardship our deteriorating infrastructure causes. In fact, the average Wisconsin driver spends $637 a year on car repairs due to the state of our roads. However, once again, Governor Walker and legislative Republicans kicked the can down the road and put hundreds of millions of dollars on the state’s credit card without coming up with a real solution.

Wisconsin can do better. This cycle of borrowing, while delaying essential infrastructure projects, is unacceptable. Democrats have repeatedly pushed for sustainable funding, an end to irresponsible borrowing, and an emphasis on improving local infrastructure. These ideas were rejected.

I also voted no because this budget does not adequately protect our natural resources and outdoor heritage.

Wisconsin is known for our natural resources and the beauty they offer.

Much of our tourism and economic development also depends on preserving our water, air, and land. This budget eliminates a major funding source for Wisconsin forestry, including wildfire control. The budget also “reorganizes” the DNR by eliminating the Bureau of Science Services and concentrating even more power in the Governor’s political office.

Wisconsin can do better. Democrats pushed to save scientist and

educator positions at the DNR and restore state parks funding, but those efforts were ignored. One of the most essential functions of the DNR will be greatly reduced and our environment will suffer.

In addition, Republicans rejected tax relief for working families in this budget, but favored tax cuts for the rich. Legislative Republicans voted to eliminate the Working Families Tax Credit, which is specifically targeted toward low-income individuals and families. The few hundred families who claim this credit receive an average tax benefit of about $276. To a family making only $15,000 a year, $276 makes an enormous difference in helping to put food on the table.

Republicans also rejected a proposed increase to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable tax credit that benefits working families with children.

On the other hand, legislative Republicans voted for the elimination of the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). The AMT was specifically created to ensure that wealthy individuals who qualify for large tax deductions and exemptions pay at least a minimum amount of income tax. Over half of those who claim the AMT earn over $300,000 per year.

This tax break won’t help regular Wisconsin families, it will help millionaires and billionaires. Wisconsin deserves better.

While there are certainly items in the budget that I support and that could have passed with strong bipartisan votes, a YES vote on this budget as a whole means supporting

an increase in our state’s debt, diminishing local control, endangering the long-term health of our environment, and increasing the burden on working families. A NO vote means standing in solidarity with our public schools, hardworking families, and local communities.

I am proud to have stood with all my Democratic colleagues, as well as five brave Republicans, in voting against a budget that is bad for Wisconsin. Wisconsin can do better.

On September 13th, the Assembly passed the biennial budget. Intraparty fights between the right wing and the far right wing delayed the budget’s passage by 2.5 months. Unfortunately, this extra time did not help this budget improve. The budget is rigged against workers, rigged against students, and rigged against Wisconsin families.

I came to Madison to fight for fairness, opportunity, and communities throughout Wisconsin. My Democratic colleagues and I offered amendment after amendment to improve the budget, but our common-sense changes were ignored.

With no room to compromise, it seemed as though partisan politics were more important for those in charge than moving our state forward.

After looking through the budget and considering its implications, I voted against the bill. The major factors influencing my vote were the complete lack of sustainable solutions for Wisconsin’s schools, infrastructure, and environment.

Republicans and Governor Walker have taken victory laps on the money this budget puts towards education.

However, this investment comes after three consecutive budgets that devastated our public schools and universities through budget cuts.

Deer, turkey, goose tagging changes taking effect The 2017-2019 biennial budget recently signed by Gov. Scott Walker includes changes in deer and turkey tagging that will take effect immediately.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is currently implementing changes involving the use of deer and turkey carcass tags and hopes to clarify any confusion the new requirements may cause during the fall hunting seasons now underway.

Deer and turkey Under the new budget law, deer and turkey carcass tags are not required to be issued with licenses. In addition, validation and attachment

of carcass tags is no longer required.

These changes do not affect other species such as bear, bobcat, fisher, otter or sturgeon.

To date, nearly one million deer and turkey carcass tags have been issued for the current fall hunting seasons. The department will honor all previously issued deer and turkey carcass tags as an authorization to hunt deer and turkey within the assigned or designated location.

Customers making additional purchases throughout the remainder of this year’s hunting seasons will be issued products that will not include the usual validation and attachment language.

While hunting, customers will still be required to carry proof they are authorized to hunt within the designated location. Hunters will be able to use their DNR issued Conservation Card, a GoWild validated WI driver’s license, a GoWild digital file or a paper tag/authorization as proof of compliance.

For the remainder of 2017 seasons, the game registration system will recognize either the previously issued tag number or the harvest authorization number to connect the customer’s information from their profile to the zone and season in which the customer is authorized to hunt.

The department will continue to issue carcass tags for deer, however hunters will not be required to validate or attach the carcass tag to the deer. The tag will continue to be issued based upon DMU, zone, land type (private/public), sex of deer and will identify weapon as appropriate.

To minimize impacts to customers for the 2017 fall turkey season now under way, the department will allow the use of previously purchased turkey carcass tags to serve as the new turkey harvest authorization.

Harvested turkey and deer must still be registered under current law.

Those include CWD, predation, habitat suitability and hunter harvest. The study is part of the Governor’s initiative on chronic wasting disease.

“We’re collaring deer, coyotes, and bobcats over five years, and these animals will department staff better understand deer mortality

and predator densities for the in the region,” said Storm.

“Obviously, we know that one of the mortality causes for deer is hunter harvest, so we hope that the collars do not influence a hunters decision as to whether or not to harvest that animal.”

This fall, hunters may spot collared or ear-tagged deer or coyote in Southwest Wisconsin and should treat these animals like any others when pursuing game.

Many animals in this area were collared as part of the Southwest Wisconsin Chronic Wasting Disease, Deer and Predator Study - a five-year investigation into deer mortality.

“The most important thing for hunters to know is that collared and tagged deer and coyotes should be treated just like the rest of the animals in the area,” said Dan Storm, DNR ungulate research ecologist.

“We’ve collared a random sample of deer and coyotes, so the collars don’t indicate anything about the animals’ health or suitability for harvest.”

Hunting licensing and normal harvest regulations apply to collared deer as they do to uncollared deer-hunters should make their decision without regard for GPS collars.

Hunters who harvest collared deer should call the number listed on the collar (608-935-1940) so DNR staff can retrieve each collar.

“Collared and tagged deer are absolutely fine to harvest, so if you

Green County 4-H hosts free Explore 4-H event Have you ever been interested in getting involved in 4--H but didn’t know how?

Have you ever been curious about the different types of projects available to exhibit at the Green County Fair?

Have you ever wondered how to make a difference in your own community or how to become a stronger leader?

Think 4-H is just for farm kids?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, Green County 4-H has the perfect event for you. Explore 4-H Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30 from Noon to 3 p.m. at the Green County Fairgrounds. This is a free open house event where you can quickly and easily learn more about 4-H. Interested youth and their families will be able to talk with current 4-H members, learn about different 4-H projects, discover how to make a difference in their communities, and get information about how to

enroll in 4-H. There will also be a chance to win free prizes.

We will also tackle the common misconception that 4-H is just for farm kids. Last year, well over half of Green County 4-H members lived in cities, towns or rural nonfarm areas and exhibited in projects like Drawing & Painting, Home Furnishings, Electricity, and Child Development. 4-H is truly for everyone, no matter your background.

The 4-H program is open to youth in 5 year old Kindergarten through one year past high school. Green County has 18 different clubs to choose from that vary in size, meeting time and location. In order to be eligible to exhibit at the 2018 Green County Fair, 4-H members must be enrolled by November 1, 2017.

‘Growing among friends’: Checklist for fall garden and landscape Care

By Melinda Myers You can see and feel the change of seasons. Fall color is starting to appear, pansies, mums and asters are in the garden center and your thoughts are turning to preparing your landscape for winter.

Those in warm climates are switching to winter annuals, while those in colder regions are fortifying their landscapes for the cold winter ahead. No matter where you live, invest some time in preparing your landscape for the change in seasons. Dedicating some time now will pay off with healthier more beautiful plants next spring.

• Continue to mow the lawn high as long as it continues to grow.

There’s no need to cut it short unless that is the look you prefer.

• Fertilize the grass with a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer like Milorganite. Fall fertilization provides the greatest benefit to your lawn and gives you the best value for the time and money invested.

• Those in cooler regions growing bluegrass, fescue and perennial ryegrass should fertilize around Labor Day when temperatures start to cool. Then make a final application between Halloween and Thanksgiving before the ground freezes.

• Those in warmer climates growing centipede, Bermuda and zoysia should also fertilize around Labor Day. However, be sure to make the last fall application at least one month prior to the average first killing frost.

• Shred leaves as they fall. Leave some on the lawn to add organic matter and nutrients to the soil. As long as you can see the grass blades through the shredded leaves your lawn will be fine. Use the rest of the shredded leaves in your compost pile, as mulch on top of the soil or as a soil amendment. Just dig a two to three inch layer into the top 12 inches of annual or new planting beds. • Plant a few bulbs now for a colorful early spring display. Incorporate compost, aged manure or other organic matter into the planting area. Add a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer at the time of plant-

ing. In general, plant bulbs two to three times their vertical diameter deep. Follow specific planting and spacing directions on the package or tag.

• Select animal-resistant bulbs to avoid squirrels digging up the bulbs and deer and rabbits eating the blooms. Daffodils, hyacinths, grape hyacinths and squills are a few to consider. Little Tommies (Crocus tommasinianus) tend to be more squirrel resistant than other crocus varieties.

• Those gardening in mild climates need low chill bulbs that will thrive and flower after a mild winter. Or purchase precooled bulbs for winter planting and spring flowering. Allow disease- and insect-free perennials to stand for winter. This will increase their winter hardiness and your enjoyment. The dried leaves, stems and seedheads provide beauty for you to enjoy, seeds for the birds and overwintering homes for many butterflies and beneficial insects.

• Plant trees, shrubs and perennials. The soil is warm and the air is cool – perfect conditions for planting and establishing trees, shrubs and perennials. And for those lucky enough to garden in warm climates, add a few winter annuals.

• Continue to water the landscape as needed throughout the fall. Be sure to water evergreens and new plantings thoroughly before the ground freezes. No matter where you live or the size of your garden, get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of fall. And be sure to invest a bit of energy now to insure your landscape is ready for the season ahead.

Pet Talk: Consider adopting an older pet When considering getting a new pet, we often think of bringing home a puppy or kitten. However, adult pets are just as loveable and can sometimes even be a better fit.

Dr. Christine Rutter, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, explained the advantages of adopting an older animal.

“Adult pets are typically not as motivated to destroy property, such as shoes, blinds, and furniture,” Rutter said. “Adult pets are often already housebroken or take to housebreaking quickly, which saves the rugs and carpeting.”

In addition, adult pets are less likely to break the bank. Depending on the health status of the adult pet when it is adopted, it is possible that caring for adult pets is less expensive than puppies or kittens.

“Juvenile pets need a series of vaccinations, deworming treatments, and may even need to be spayed or neutered,” Rutter said.

“Just like people, young animals are also more susceptible to infections and viruses, which can land them in the veterinarian’s office.

The cost of these services add up.”

However, older pets also can

come with their own challenges.

Rutter said it’s common for adult pets in shelters to have a range of special needs, from simple fixes to complex treatments.

“It’s always important to have a veterinarian evaluate any new pet and perform a routine health screening,” Rutter said. “A veterinarian can also assess the approximate age of an adult pet and make recommendations for follow-up intervention and care, if needed.”

As you should with any pet, be sure to look for signs of illness at home. Any weight loss, excessive drinking or urination, decreased appetite, pain, or chronic diarrhea or vomiting should be reported to a veterinarian.

While each animal is different, caring for an adult pet may be an easier experience than raising a puppy or kitten. If you are considering adopting a pet, be sure to give an adult pet a chance.

Green County Sheriff’s Report

Sept. 17 Probation Violation At 2:02 a.m., Deputies stopped a vehicle on STH 11, at 17th Street, in the City of Brodhead. Investigation resulted in the driver, Nicholas S. Rowley, 22, of Brodhead, being arrested for a probation violation.

Rowley was jailed. A passenger in the vehicle, Adam C. Tobler, 26, of Davis, Ill, was cited for Open Intoxicants in a Motor Vehicle. Tobler was released pending court.

Sept. 19 Drug/Narcotic Violation At 12:20 a.m., a vehicle, driven by Joshua J. Schulz, 19, Oregon, was stopped in the W900 block of STH 92, Town of Brooklyn, for violating an officer who was conducting traffic control. During the contact with the driver, Deputies noted the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

After an investigation, Schulz was cited for Minor in Possession of Al-

cohol, Possession of Marijuana (25 g. or less), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Schulz was released to a responsible party pending a court date.

Domestic Abuse At 9:39 p.m., Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at N3800 Autumn Ridge Road, Town of Sylvester. Daniel J. Kundert, 27, was arrested for Disorderly Conduct. He was jailed pending court or bond.

Sept. 20 Burglary At 7:57 p.m. Deputies responded to a reported burglary in the 300 block of E South Street in the Village of Browntown. Several firearms and various types of ammunition were taken sometime around 1:00 a.m. on 9/20/17. Obituary

BETTY FOSLIN Betty Ann Foslin, age 82, of Beloit, formerly of Brodhead, passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Beloit Health and Rehabilitation , Beloit, WI. She was born on April 19, 1935 in Avon Township, Rock County, the daughter of Albert and Mabel (Joranlien) Foslin.

Betty had lived in Monroe, WI, and worked for Swiss Colony, retiring and moving to Brodhead in 2000. She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Brodhead, and loved making lefse and being with her family.

She is survived by her son, Steven (Christy) Foslin, Brodhead; a brother, Laverne (Glee) Foslin, Janesville;

Sept. 22 Warrant Arrest At 9:00 a.m. Deputies arrested Curtis John Gerber, 33, Browntown, for a Department of Corrections warrant at a residence in the 300 block of S Church St in Browntown. He was jailed.

Car Crash At 4:47 p.m. Deputies responded to a vehicle vs goat crash in the W3000 block of Purintun Rd, Town of Albany. Torie Lynn Cason, 41, Albany, was eastbound when she collided with goats in the roadway. Clason reported wearing her seatbelt and was uninjured. There was no airbag deployment. The vehicle sustained moderate front-end damage and was driven from the scene.

Warrant Arrest At 10:34 p.m. Jeremy H. Hardyman, 31, Browntown, turned himself at the Green County Sheriff’s Office for a Department of Corrections war-

rant. He was jailed.

Sept. 23 Car Crash At 3:06 PM, Deputies, New Glarus EMS, New Glarus Fire, New Glarus Police, Belleville Police and UW Med-Flight responded the to the W5200 block of County Highway W, Town of New Glarus, for a one vehicle crash with injuries.

The investigation revealed that Leon B. Brown, age 50 of Milton, was eastbound when he lost control of his motorcycle while negotiating a curve. The motorcycle collided with an embankment and ejected the occupants. Leon was not wearing a helmet but did have on eye protection.

and was flown by Med-Flight to UW Hospital.

Leon’s passenger, Bobbie S. Brown, age 49 of Milton, not wearing a helmet but did have on eye protection. She also sustained injuries in the crash and was flown by MedFlight to UW Hospital. Leon was cited for Failure to Maintain Control, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Marijuana (25 grams or less).

A second motorcycle, operated by John C. McCarthy age 66 of Milton, came to the scene. Following an investigation John was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated, 1st Offense. He was released to a responsible party.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Brodhead, with Rev. Richard Thickpenny officiating.
