Obituaries

HAZEL L. JOHNSON Hazel L. Johnson of Brodhead, age 98, passed away on Friday, Sept. 11, 2020, at the Agrace Center for Hospice and Palliative Care in Janesville, Wisconsin. She was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Argyle, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ever and Estella (Scott) Nyborg. She married Clyde Johnson in 1942 and he passed away in 1978. She later married Lloyd Johnson in 1979 and he passed away in 2009.

Hazel is survived by her children, Stella (Don) Wolter of Brodhead and Robert (Debra) Johnson of Madison; a step son, William (LeAnn) Johnson of Dixon, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Viola Tschabold; grandchildren, Kent (Rochelle) Clark, Deborah (Chip) Porter, Kevin (Kim) Clark, Sarah (Scott) Chehak and Stephen Johnson; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and numerous step grandchildren, step greatgreat grandchildren; two very close friends, Mary Meichtry and Janice Knight, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a son, Richard Johnson; a stepson, Lloyd Johnson Jr.; a sister, Violet (Harley) Little; a brother, Arlin (Pearl) Nyborg; sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws and cousins.

Everyone loved Hazel’s infectious laugh and her cheerful personality. In her retirement years, she lived life to the fullest. She walked three miles a day for over 20 years with Velda Olson and Mary Lancaster. She enjoyed many wonder-

ful hours of swimming at Brodhead Pool and Monroe YMCA with lots of friends who would get together aside from swimming. She enjoyed years of bowling with Golden Girls Bowling Team and a couples bowling leagues and she always had a fun time. Hazel also enjoyed fishing, camping and sitting by the campfire with Bob and Deb and the grandchildren. She loved to go out to eat with many friends and relatives.

Everyone who came in contact with Hazel loved her. This includes her family, friends, neighbors and the caregivers at her home in Brodhead, in Albany Oaks, Monroe Health Center and Agrace Hospice. We will always see that smile and hear that wonderful laugh and we will always miss you, Hazel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2820 Walton Commons, Suite 132, Madison WI 53718.

Private family graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at a later date; please watch the website for future times and places.

LARRY ALLEN STEFANIK Larry Allen Stefanik, age 77, of Brodhead, passed away on Sept. 10, 2020, while at the Woods Crossing Nursing Home in Brodhead.

Larry was born on March 1, 1943, in Milwaukee, the son of Paul and Marvella (Radtke) Stefanik. Larry married his wife of over 47 years, Kathleen Finley, on March 3, 1973, in Beloit, Wisconsin.

Larry was an Albany High School graduate in 1961. Larry enjoyed the outdoors and loved to go out west on hunting trips, go fishing and tend to his garden. Larry was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran church and served on the church council for three years.

Larry was an independent entrepreneur and self-employed businessman. He owned and managed a large commercial dairy farm in Green County from 1967 to 1987; owned and operated a real estate and appraisal brokerage firm as well as acquiring real estate and investment properties from 1977 to 2020.

He also created and grew a residential home building company, doing nine to 12 new homes per year from 1993 to 2010.

Larry served on various boards and committees throughout his life, including: past president of Albany Lions Club, past president of the Green County Board of Realtors, past president of the Wisconsin Chapter Realtors Land Institute and several terms on the village and town of Albany planning and

zoning committees and Albany School Board.

Larry was also the 1986 Realtor of the Year for the Realtors Land Institute and Green County Board of Realtors.

Larry is survived by his wife, Kathleen; two children, Steven (Tracy) Stefanik and Lisa Stefanik; two grandchildren, Jordan (Kevin) Ile and Hailey Stefanik; three siblings, Judy (Gary) Studer of Monroe, Peggy (Lorin) Jordan of Juda and Neil (Jackie) Stefanik of Albany; an uncle, Ronald (Joan) Radtke of Brookfield, Wisconsin, and many other nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in his memory.

A public visitation was held at the DL Newcomer Funeral Home, 1105 E. Ninth Ave. in Brodhead, on Sunday, Sept. 13. Private family services will be held at a later date with burial concluding at Hillcrest Cemetery in Albany.

Daily park, trail passes Albany district goes available on site at state parks virtual after virus

The Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week Program is now underway, and the team is accepting nominations from high schools across the state, regardless of whether the high school team is playing in the fall or spring this year.

The program recognizes one outstanding Wisconsin high school coach on a weekly basis during the next several months.

Each honoree will be awarded several items and privileges, including a $1,000 donation to the school’s football program from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL and recognition on packers.com, WisSports.net and Wifca.org.

This year, because some schools have postponed their football seasons to the spring due to COVID-19, the Packers are seeking coaches to be nominated regardless of their team’s on-field performance or whether they are playing in the fall or spring. Rather, the nominee could be honored for how they have turned programs around, how the team has impacted the community, or how the coach impacts the players and their families.

At the end of the season, one coach is named the WFCA/ Green Bay Packers High School Football Coach of the Year, selected by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association, and is given a $2,000 donation for his or her football program.

“We’re proud to recognize the hard work of high school football coaches with the Packers Coach of the Week program,” Packers football outreach specialist Ryan Fencl said in a news release. “As educators, mentors and leaders, both on and off the field, they serve as positive examples for young people in the community and give them the opportunity to learn and grow.”

Nominations can be submitted by 10 a.m. every Monday to Fencl at coachoftheweek@packers.com.

All nominations should include the nominee’s name, address, school, phone number and reason he/she is deserving of the award.

The DNR says priority continues to be the safety and health of the visitors and staff and it still asks the public to continue recreating responsibly close to home, practicing social distancing, frequently washing their hands, and only traveling for necessity. Visitors are also encouraged to wear face coverings in situations where social distancing may be difficult. This may apply to outdoor spaces as well.

Temporary capacity restrictions will be put into place as needed to manage admissions and overcrowding at properties. View current property information before visiting at the DNR website by searching “Wisconsin State Park Capacity Updates.”

Attractions at which social distancing cannot be achieved are closed at various properties; visit the park notices webpage for information about ongoing closures.

All other facilities currently closed such as towers, shelters, playgrounds, nature centers, headquarters, entrance stations and concession buildings remain closed to the public.

Tractor drive helps families affected by Alzheimer’s, dementia The seventh annual Tractor Ride & Drive for the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin is set for Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Spring Grove Town Hall, N2475 County Highway GG, Brodhead. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

Everyone is welcome; you don’t need a tractor to participate in the fun.

“We will be traveling by the local senior nursing home and then off to a scenic tour of our beautiful countryside on our way to the Juda Community Center for lunch,” according to a news release.

The cost for tractors is $20.

Wagon rides are $15. The cost for children 10 and under is $5.

Tractor drivers must have a valid driver’s license or tractor safety certificate.

At the community center, members of Boy Scout Troop 108 will

serve brats, hot dogs and hamburgers for a free-will donation.

Teena Monk-Gerber, Green and Rock counties dementia outreach specialist for the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin, will give a brief presentation about tips for a brain-healthy lifestyle.

Funds raised from the Tractor Drive & Ride will benefit programs, support and services to Green and Rock County families from the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin.

Students in the School District of Albany moved to full virtual instruction Sept. 10 after a member of the district staff tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The district will remain in Plan C (full virtual) through at least Sept. 18 due to staff contact tracing. Full virtual instruction could be extended and families will be notified no later than Sept. 18 on the status of instruction.

“This is not a COVID-19 outbreak and the staff member had little contact with students,” Superintendent William Trow said in the announcement. “No students have been linked to the contact tracing completed within the district.

“As a school community, we realize a shift in instructional models will present challenges, which will be different for each individual, especially the first time we travel this road together. But if we are all patient and work through these experiences, we will all learn how to make this process the best it can be.”

DNR seeks public input on water quality The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking input from residents who are concerned about clean waters.

People may view the Clean Water Act targeted watershed assessment (TWA) reports and provide comments and suggestions to the DNR. “The DNR’s water quality program is responsible for monitoring Wisconsin waters and planning a cleaner, healthier future for the state’s aquatic ecosystems,” Adrian Stocks, DNR Bureau of Water Quality director, said in a news release. “These TWA reports reflect the year-round efforts undertaken by

our team members to gather and assess data on stream water quality, habitat and aquatic life in order to protect our water bodies and ensure their long-term viability.”

To view the TWA reports, go online to dnr.wisconsin.gov and search for water quality plans and reports. To provide feedback, send an email to WQPlanPublicInquiry@wisconsin.gov.

Comments will be reviewed and incorporated into plans before they are sent to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as part of the state’s Area-wide Water Quality Management Plan under the federal Clean Water Act.

Visitors using the drive-up window option will find a plexiglass barrier and a minimum of 6 feet distance between themselves and staff. All equipment used in customer transactions at the drive-up windows will be disinfected after each use.

While drive-up windows will be open to customers throughout the fall (locations and hours will vary), state park system headquarters and office buildings will remain closed to the public.

Daily trail and park admission passes are again being sold at all state park system properties, according to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

While the options for purchasing a daily admission or trail pass will vary by property, at least one of the following options will be available at each property: electronic pay station, self-registration station and/or drive-up window service.

“We are excited to continue to add services back for our customers, and our staff have done an excellent job of preparing for a safe transaction with our visitors,” said Mark Aquino, acting Park and Recreation Management Bureau director.

New scholarship aims to fully fund two Blackhawk Tech students idea of Blackhawk’s vice president of administrative services, Renea Ranguette. As a first-generation college student, she knows firsthand how education can transform lives. Based on her experience she dreamed of a wrap-around scholarship that would give a student full tuition, cover books and supplies, set them up with a job opportunity, provide mentoring, and give them a stipend to live on.

“As a member of a federally recognized Indian tribe (Sault Sainte Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians), I was eligible for a substantial higher education scholarship to cover my cost of living expenses while attending school,” Ranguette said in the release. “That support was instrumental in allowing me to stay the course and complete my degree.”

The selected students will receive $12,000 to $18,000 in tuition assistance, supplies, living expenses and salary from their internships.

The IDEAL Opportunity Scholarship is available to two students this first year. Campaign visits demonstrate Wisconsin’s importance as swing state The year 2020 is anything but normal.

But one thing that seemed normal on the recent Labor Day weekend: top national candidates visiting the Badger State to kick off the traditional campaign season.

Labor Day saw visits to Wisconsin by both Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

Pence was in La Crosse, and Harris was in Milwaukee. The visits got a lot of national attention and again focused the importance of Wisconsin in this year’s presidential race.

Most pundits say that in order for Donald Trump to repeat, he has to again win Wisconsin. But postconvention polls showed Trump

trailing Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The NBC political team has Wisconsin as “lean Democrat” in the Electoral College count.

Pence made a pitch to farmers and workers while Harris spoke of the challenges facing minority- and female-owned businesses as the two stumped on opposite sides of Wisconsin this Labor Day. Speaking at Dairyland Power Cooperative in La Crosse, Pence repeatedly praised Trump, including his work to replace NAFTA. In doing so, he took a swipe at Harris, who was one of 10 senators who voted against the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement the Trump administration negotiated.

Wisconsin workers and farmers.

“Here at Dairyland Power, you deserve to know Senator Harris put their radical environmental agenda ahead of Wisconsin dairy and ahead of Wisconsin power,” Pence said. “But under President Donald Trump, we will always put Wisconsin farmers, Wisconsin businesses and Wisconsin families first.”

Harris, D-Calif., had two events in the Milwaukee area, the first a tour of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers training facility in Wauwatosa to speak with union members and Wisconsin labor leaders.

She also enjoyed many other things in life — cooking, baking, crocheting and trying new hobbies such as cake decorating, ceramics,

sewing and trying new recipes.

Rosemary was a Spring Valley 4-H cooking leader for several years, a cook at Hanover’s Ding-ALing for seven years and later in life worked at the Piggly Wiggly deli in Evansville until retiring from all and moving to the city of Brodhead. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Brodhead and a former member of Orfordville Lutheran.

She spent the last year of her life at Aster Assisted Living in Monroe, with her beloved cat, Sweet Pea. Graveside services were held at the Greenwood Cemetery, County Highway T in Brodhead, on Friday, Sept. 11.

The DL Newcomer Funeral Home in Brodhead is assisting the family.

Obituary ROSEMARY WILKE Rosemary Wilke, age 86, of Brodhead, passed away on Sept. 7, 2020, at Aster Assisted Living in Monroe.

She was born the daughter of George and Ruth (Rodebaugh) Sands on Sept. 30, 1933. She attended Orfordville High School, where she met her husband, Verne E. Wilke, and was married on Aug. 22, 1952.

Rosemary worked along with her husband on their dairy farm in rural Brodhead raising their two children.

She is survived by her children, Steven (Marilyn) Wilke and Christine (Dan) Drefahl; grandchildren, Samuel (Jessica) Wilke, Maxwell (Sadie) Wilke and Stephanie (Pranav) Drefahl and a great-grandchild, Cayden.

Officials at Blackhawk Technical College Foundation recently announced the creation of a new scholarship to fully fund two students beginning in January. The IDEAL Opportunity Scholarship includes funds to cover the cost of tuition and books, a paid internship with a community partner, a cost of living stipend, support through the internship and mentoring from a faculty member.

The Janesville Police Department, Frito Lay and Shine Medical Technologies are premier partners for the program, offering students paid internship opportunities during their program of study. In addition to hosting an intern, Frito Lay donated $5,000 to the scholarship fund.

“IDEAL stands for Inclusion – Diversity – Equity – Accessibility - Launch and is a concerted effort to increase educational and employment opportunities for historically marginalized members of our community, including persons of color who are low-income and may be first-generation college students,” according to a news release. “The program is designed to support full-time enrolled students as they work toward degree completion in designated, high-need areas such as industrial maintenance mechanic, electromechanical technology, automated systems technology, nuclear technology and criminal justice.”

Help track Wisconsin’s deer populations by reporting deer sightings The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking the public to participate in Operation Deer Watch, an annual citizen-science survey that collects information on Wisconsin’s white-tailed deer and gives residents an opportunity to assist with deer herd management efforts.

Participants can report their deer sightings through an easy-to-use online form at wisconsin.dnr.gov.

The data collected provide insights into the reproductive status of Wisconsin’s deer herd and help shape deer management for the state.

Now through Sept. 30, participants are asked to record all bucks, does and fawns seen during the day.

A printable tally sheet is available to help citizen-scientists record sightings and enter their results online at a later time. For safety, participants should not record sightings while driving a vehicle. Instead, wait until the vehicle is stopped to take note of your sightings.

Any deer sightings can be counted, whether you spot deer while in the woods, on a drive or while out for a walk.

They have worked very hard and sat through many hours of training to get the Fee Management and Online Registration up and running for the school year.

Superintendent Lenny Lueck thanked Tonya Buttke, Tracy Lueck, and Chad Dix for all of their work related to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also thanked Jim Matthys for his work with High School graduation, helping with the garage and dugouts, and setting up the Cardinal Academy. He also thanked Dave Novy for his work related to the Elementary School’s virtual academy, CARES, and Educere.

Harris then attended a roundtable with Black Milwaukee business leaders later in the afternoon to discuss advancing racial equality as part of a Biden-Harris administration’s recovery plan. She told reporters following the roundtable that the conversation included the need to invest in “healthy communities because healthy communities are safe communities.”

She also ticked off a series of challenges facing minority- and women-owned businesses as she said a Biden administration would invest in community banks and opportunity zones while helping boost an entrepreneurial class.

She said the vast majority of small businesses owned by women and minorities didn’t benefit from the Paycheck Protection Program.

“Unlike how Donald Trump has

been concerned about the wealthy, the people who are working every day and trying to raise their families don’t have the access to those kinds of relationships and have not received the benefit of something like the PPP.” It was Harris’ first stop in Wisconsin as part of the Democratic ticket. She was last in the state for a political event in November, when she attended a fundraiser for her presidential campaign before dropping out of the race in December.

Harris largely ignored questions from reporters other than noting she lived in Wisconsin as a girl.

After the roundtable, Harris shouted to supporters who were waiting outside to vote early, noting “I need your help, Milwaukee.”

hopes of winning Wisconsin this fall. Trump won western Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District by 4.5 percentage points four years ago, though Democratic Gov. Tony Evers narrowly won it in 2018. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton underperformed across Wisconsin in 2016 compared to Barack Obama, though much of the national attention was on her poor numbers out of Milwaukee County.

Pence’s speech was a combination of reminding the crowd how the economy was performing before the pandemic struck and the administration’s efforts to get the country back on its feet while also taking a shot at Biden over violent protests.

Trump visited Kenosha after violent riots broke out in response to a police officer shooting a Black man in the back seven times. Like Trump did during his visit to Kenosha, Pence slammed rioting and looting, saying they must stop now.

He said Trump sent 200 federal law enforcement officers to Kenosha to work with the National Guard to quell the violent protests, while saying it took Biden three months to speak up. Even then, Pence added, Biden criticized law enforcement and said there’s systemic racism in the U.S., including bias in police forces.

“The people here in Wisconsin know Joe Biden would double down on policies that literally led to violence,” said Pence, who made his seventh visit to Wisconsin of 2020.

After landing in Milwaukee, Harris had a private meeting with the family of the man who was shot by Kenosha police. According to the pool report, she met at the airport in person with Jacob Blake’s father and two sisters, as well as members of his legal team. Meanwhile, his mother participated in the meeting by phone.

Blake’s legal team called it “an inspirational and uplifting onehour visit” in which Harris talked about policy changes she and Biden plan to seek. That includes implicit bias training.

During her tour of the IBEW facility, Harris said her message was “to express concern for their well-being and of course, for their brother and their son’s well-being and to let them know that they have support.”

Biden also met with Blake’s family while he was in Kenosha, just after Trump. Trump declined to meet with them, saying the family wanted its legal team to monitor the conversation.
