New Clayt’s owner strives to maintain bar’s character

It is Clayt’s no longer, but Broughton’s Corner is still on the corner, at 120 North Water St. in downtown Albany, Wis. The lone change in the bar’s name reflects new owner Derek Broughton’s desire to pick up where previous owner Clayt Sowl left off. Sowl celebrated 40 years as owner of the bar on Nov. 12 of last year.

Broughton said he sees the bar as a “local, small town” bar, and makes no plans on changing that atmosphere.

Broughton said he would come into Clayt’s Corner as a child with his father, who lives in Albany.

Broughton said he had been asking Sowl about his plans to sell the bar for the last 6 months. His persistence paid off – the bar never made it to the market, and Broughton reportedly finalized the sale Aug. 13, and opened doors as the new owner on Aug. 15.

ly lunch hours are anything to go by, Broughton has some big shoes to fill.

One customer, who identified himself only as “Mike,” said he has been coming into Clayt’s intermittently for the last 20 years Derek Broughton while he visits family. “(Sowl) was good with people, and very good to the community,” he said. “He always went above and beyond on money given to the community.”

A few minutes later, Mike tried to order another. “Too bad, Dennis is paying for it,” said the bartender, walking away from Mike’s polite insistence on paying for the beer.

Vendors wanted for Pastor’s Corner Albany Fall Festival The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce for the 14th annual Fall Festival is currently seeking vendors. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on North Water Street in downtown Albany.

The cost of the 10-foot by 10-foot vendor space is 15 dollars.

A joint statement from Brodhead area Pastors We are writing as area clergy in response to the tragic events in Charlottesville and the increased visibility of white supremacy in our society.

First and foremost, we want to acknowledge the particular experience and suffering of those targeted by such hatred and bigotry. To all minority residents of our communities, please know that you need not bear the burden of this hatred alone.

We are committed to being your allies in the struggle for equality and justice. Please let us know how we as community leaders may support you and your families.

Second, we denounce in no uncertain terms the evil nature of white supremacy in all its forms and the sin of racism. We as pastors see this not only as a social and political issue, but as a spiritual one as well.

We as Christians believe that every human being is created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27) and that we are all united in the extravagant love ex-

pressed in Jesus Christ.

While we are indeed set apart by various distinctions in the diversity of our shared life, we are one human family. Racism and white supremacy are a sin both against God and neighbor (1 John 4:20), and have no place in a just society.

We, as people of faith, publicly repent of this sin in our own lives, and commit ourselves to God’s vision of beloved community.

Jesus died to reconcile humanity with God, and anything that offends this mission is to be denounced.

Therefore, we call on all members of this community to join us in the work of reconciliation (1 Corinthians 5:18). We call for self-examination and repentance as an initial step towards this work (1 John 1:8-10). And we invite you to learn more about the reality and effects of racism and the many complicated ways it diminishes our shared life together.

As area churches host opportunities for study and reflection on this issue, we ask you to participate. As

Brodhead Library offering early literacy program Storytime will begin Friday, September 8 at 10 a.m. in the children’s area. This program is designed for children three years and older.

It includes picture books, songs with motions, rhymes, crafts and early literacy activities.

A study by Judy MacLean found that preschool literacy programs – like library storytimes – do make a difference: “There is evidence to support that such activities as reading, singing and playing with children, can impact a child’s brain development and subsequently help provide them with the pre-reading skills they need to start school.”

Juda School District August meeting summary Juda School Board met Aug. 9 and addressed the following matters: • Approved the 66.03 agreement for Director of Pupil Services with Monticello.

• Held discussion on hosting an open house in September. The date will be Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, and will include a meal by the Booster Club, a presentation and ribbon cutting to be followed by tours.

• Approved a paternity leave request.

• Heard a report from Mrs. Davis on student enrollment for the coming school year and staffing issues.

• President Pfingsten discussed implantation of recently approved board goals. Beginning in September the board will alternate between

recognizing students and staff in the upcoming school year.

• Mrs. Davis shared with the board the agenda for the upcoming in service days for staff.

• Learned the district is the recipient again this year of the 10 thousand dollar Monsanto Grant.

• Heard a report from Joe Jones on the status of the bus fleet. The board gave authorization to pursue seeking more information on purchasing a new bus for the district.

• Approved staff compensation recommendations from the Collaboration and Finance Committees.

• Took no action coming out of executive session.

• After the meeting the board took a tour of the school to view progress of the remodeling projects.

(Above left and right) The Brodhead Garden Club had a very successful flower show Friday and Saturday of the Covered Bridge Days. For its theme, the show took as its inspiration the timeless board game “Candy Land”, which proved to be a hit among the nearly 250 attendees. Rhonda Stewart, of Monroe, won the door prize, a $25 gift certificate to 1st Center Floral Garden in Brodhead.

“Then he saw legs ascending from the birth canal and realized she was in labor. He knew the fawn was still alive because the legs were moving. With that kind of trauma, it was amazing that she survived.”

For the first six weeks of Leva’s life, she was bottle-fed and cared for by the game warden’s wife, a veterinarian who had recently graduated from Texas A&M’s CVM. After struggling to find a rehabilitation center that would accept the fawn and help her regain her health so she could be released back into the wild, the couple contacted Blue-McLendon.

“Because of our educational permit, Leva can live here the rest of her life and will be taken care of,” Blue-McLendon said.

“She’ll eventually join our herd of White-tailed deer and also interact with students who are interested in caring for wildlife.”

Though Leva was in dire need of veterinary care, Blue-McLendon reminded community members that wildlife, especially fawns, are best left alone unless they are in life-threatening danger or are injured.

“A lot of people find fawns by themselves and think they need to be rescued,” Blue-McLendon explained.

“But it’s just the nature of fawns to stay hidden; most of the time, fawns are not abandoned and their mothers come back.”

The Winne Carter Wildlife Center staff were happy to provide the kind, compassionate care that Leva needed to survive; no matter the species, a veterinarian, and in this case a game warden, can help save an animal’s life.

When we think of veterinarians, we typically see them caring for house pets, such as cats and dogs. However, veterinarians gain experience in treating a variety of animals, including livestock, “pocket pets”—such as gerbils or hamsters—and even wildlife.

Dr. Alice Blue-McLendon, clinical associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM), explained the important role veterinarians play in animal emergencies by telling the story of Leva, an 8-week-old White-tailed fawn.

“We recently started caring for Leva at the CVM’s Winne Carter Wildlife Center,” Blue-McLendon said.

“We call her our ‘miracle baby’ because she survived her mother’s fatal accident thanks to a husband and wife—a game warden and veterinarian respectively.

She was a devoted grandmother and loved spending time at the family cabin in Boulder Junction, Wis. She is survived by a daughter, Maxine Ast, Brodhead, Wis.; three sons, Curtis (Susan) Murray, Edgerton, Wis., Vernon (Sylvia) and Robert Murray, both of Brodhead, Wis.; three sisters, Rosemary (Harley) Richardson, Beloit, Wis., Carol (Richard) Lyons, Florida, Susan (Al) Hanson, Camp Douglas, Wis.; a brother, Marvin (Sara) Brosier, Virginia; nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and a greatgreat grandson on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother George, two sisters, Beverly Holcomb and Betty Jensen, and a great-grandson, Parker Brandt.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017, at the D.L Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead, Wis., with Chaplain Mark Maxted officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, Wis. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. on Saturday until time of services at the funeral home.

LOIS I. MURRAY Lois I. Murray, age 87, of Brodhead, Wis., passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at Beloit Memorial Hospital, Beloit, Wis. She was born on June 2, 1930 in Beloit, Wis., the daughter of George and Mary (Upward) Brosier. She married Vernon L. Murray on April 17, 1946 in Beloit, Wis. He passed away on March 7, 2017.

After her father passed away from Parkinson’s disease, Jodi Kegebein began to notice small changes in her mom. She thought her mom’s small memory lapses were a result of grief over the loss of her husband.

Kegebein eventually took her mom to Monroe Memory Center, where she was diagnosed with middle-stage Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Since her diagnosis, the family has learned to cope with the stages of grief a dementia diagnosis can bring.

Today, Kegebein and her family are the family chairs of this year’s Green County Alzheimer’s Walk on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Behring Senior Center.

They encourage community members to register a team or sign up individually to walk in the fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW). Anyone can join.

Proceeds raised in Green county help patients in Green County receive support and caregiver services. Register for the walk or find more information at support. alzwisc.org/green.

After receiving care from Dr. Joshua Morrison at the Monroe Memory Center and services from Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW), Kegebein said her focus has changed from finding a fix to making sure her mom is happy and safe.

Jodi’s mom still lives in Monroe, in the same farmhouse where she and her husband raised their family.

She has tended the gardens around the house for decades and still enjoys weeding her flowerbeds, sometimes with help from her twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The entire Kegebein family works to keep life familiar for her, Jodi Kegebein said. They have learned so much about Alzheimer’s and dementia, she said.

“It’s a kind of grieving process,” Kegebein said. “The more I learned about it, the more I learned to step back. I wanted to fix everything and do everything, but now I know to let her do what she can.”

There are more than 110,000 Wisconsin residents currently living with some form of dementia disease; a number expected to increase as the general population ages.

The Alzheimer’s Walk is a chance to raise funds and awareness. The event provides an opportunity for a disease that fosters isolation to be illuminated, for people living with dementia to be active in their community, and for caregivers to find support and companionship.
