St. Patrick Catholic Church marks its 150th Anniversary in Albany A gloriously warm day marked the 150th Anniversary of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Albany on Sunday, Aug. 5.

About 145 current and former parishioners and their families gathered at the church for the 11 a.m. Mass followed with a dinner to mark the celebration.

Several families in attendance were represented with three generations of family members.

Before Mass began, five parishioners lit a total of 25 small votive candles in memory of deceased church members.

Father Mick Moon presided at the Mass. “One parishioner began crying when she first entered the church, recalling past occasions at the church, and grateful to have returned for this anniversary,” Moon said, honoring deep sentiment of the church’s faithful.

In his homily during the Mass, Father Moon detailed some of the challenges and joys St. Patrick church members have experienced since 1868. He told

“It was a humbling and joyful experience to be at the altar and to hear and see the congregation responding so enthusiastically and reverently,” Moon said.

Following the Mass, everyone was invited to share in a meal in the downstairs dining hall. The meal provided a comfortable setting to catch up on news and renew friendships.

Individuals came from as far away as Chicago to the celebration, and they were conversing with each other until 3 p.m. after the meal.

Father Moon summed up the anniversary experience and the church’s much appreciated history in Albany.

“We have so much to thank God for,” Moon said.

Love of competition, sports keeps Morris in the game

Isaac Morris loves sports. He shares with many young people a love to compete in sports.

One difference for Isaac is that he was born with spinal bifida.

That does not stop him from competing, though, as he just competes using different methods.

He has played sledge hockey for several years. He took part in track in 8th grade, but was taken out of competition because he had to have surgery.

As a freshman this past spring, Isaac again competed in track and made it to state competition. He placed first in Shot Put (out of eight competitors), and fourth in wheel chair 100 meters out of seven competitors.

Isaac took part in four regular season meets. According to Coach Suehring, this was less than they had planned on him competing, but because Isaac broke his leg during the season he had to miss a few meets.

“He did break his leg at a track meet this year,” said Jennifer Morris, Isaac’s mom. “He was sitting down on a hill and his leg broke at the screws from the surgery from last year. He was in a cast for four weeks, until they found he was getting a pressure sore on his heel.

“That forced them to put him in

an immobilizer to allow his heel to heal.”

But that didn’t stop Isaac, with his never- quit attitude he asked the doctor if he could go back to track the second he heard no more cast.

His surgeon told him that the immobilizer was to be treated just like a cast, but he could return to track, although he did not recommend it.

His surgeon knew Isaac and his dare devil view on life and explained that if he was not very careful and it broke again, he will have to have surgery to have steel plates put in. But all Isaac heard was the “yes!”

Initially, Isaac was going to compete in four events at State. Due to the injury, he only took part in two.

He didn’t face a lot of competition in regular season meets, only having thrown shot against one other competitor. He didn’t have any competition in the 100 meter.

The school purchased two new pieces of equipment for Isaac this spring. Suehring said. “We got a new racing chair to replace the one he was borrowing prior to that. We also purchased a chair made specifically for throwing, which replaced a simple, homemade throwing chair we were using prior to that,” Suehring said.

“Isaac does have a love for sports,” said Jennifer Morris. “He wants to try it all. Next on our list

is power lifting. His goal, that one day he can win the Paralympics. He doesn’t see himself as a disabled athlete though, he simply sees himself as just an athlete. He trains just as hard as his peers. He wants to win just as bad.

“The only difference is the tools he uses to get there,” she said.

“Some kids use their legs to run the 100m he uses his arms. It’s the same finish line, just a different means of getting there. Isaac loves sports. I have no doubt he will go far. He already has plans for a full year next year. He wants to add downhill skiing to his list.”

“I have to say I’m pretty amazed and proud that he took the state title for wheelchair shot put and fourth in the 100m all with a broken leg, let alone at the freshman level. He

truly inspires me every day. No matter the obstacle he faces, he will always find a way around it. He truly is my hero.”

Isaac has also served as team manager for the football and basketball teams for several years at Parkview.

He could be seen riding his bike up to football practice with the players this past week. He’s right back doing what he enjoys as the start of school approaches.

Anyone who has seen Isaac at school or athletic events knows he always seems to have a smile on his face and a great attitude.

Juda School Board discusses possible operating funding referendum

When the word “recurring” is used in relation to a referendum, it may give an inaccurate impression, Wirth said.

“Sometimes people think that every single year another $150,000 is being put in,” she said. “That’s not the way it works. It means that $150,000 is put in once and just stays there.”

The revenue limit determines how much revenue the school is allowed.

The revenue varies based on a 3-year averaged enrollment number that is officially reported to the state on the third Friday of September each year.

Over the past 3 years, Juda has had a slight decline in enrollment, which enables the school to qualify for a declining enrollment exemption, allowing the district to receive $30,000 more revenue.

“It’s going to increase (a district’s) revenue one year, but the trick is going to be the next year it’s going to appear as a subtraction. So, it gets taken away from you,” Carol Wirth said.

Revenue is also controlled by the amount of state aid the district receives. The revenue minus the state aid gives the number that the district can tax for operating purposes. Wirth said, “If your state aid comes in higher, your tax levy goes down. If your state aid comes in lower, your tax levy goes up. So, think of state aid as property tax relief.”

An increase in state aid does not mean the district has more revenue to work with. Open enrollment is not an item in factoring the revenue due to its uncertain number.

The deadline for a referendum to be put on the November ballot is Aug. 27.

In even years, elections are held in February, April, August, and November. In odd years, elections are only held in February and April. The referendum can only be presented on a ballot during election time.

In its meeting last week, the Juda school board went on to approve meeting minutes from May and June, as well as the treasurer and financial reports.

Resignations of school aides Cynthia Gempler and Cody Stuckey were accepted. Stuckey accepted a job as an English and Social Studies teacher at another school district.

Superintendent Traci Davis reported Green Cares of Monticello approached her about funding and supporting a food pantry in Juda. The school is looking to partner with Juda Zion Church for staffing and maintaining the pantry.

The only requirement to receiving the benefit is that a child be a student of Juda School. Davis said that there are still some issues to work out, but she hopes to resolve them with more discussion.

In other school news, the staff handbook has been finalized and approved for the 2018-2019 school year. The support staff handbook has not been finalized.

The board will be having a special meeting concerning the referendum with Carol Wirth next Monday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Juda School Learning Commons.

Farmers of the Sugar River, producer-led watershed group sets field day Aug. 21

Green County board meeting set for Aug. 21

After waiting for a couple weeks to hear official scheduling news, county staff announced that the next meeting of the Green County Board will be next Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse on the square in Monroe.

The County Clerk was to have posted the meeting’s specific agenda items on or around yesterday, Aug. 14. This is an open meeting, and all are welcome to attend.

One of the items that we expect to appear on the agenda concerns email addresses for the County Board Supervisors.

Because the county must keep email correspondence for 7 years and due to the nature of county business and the occasional need to retrieve past information, it is advised that county board supervisors have an email account separate from their personal and business accounts.

Green County government’s IT department is setting up email accounts for all elected supervisors and will update the contact information on the county website when it is complete. Check the email address of your county board supervisor and be prepared for it to change in the near future.

As with all changes, it may take some getting used to, but this new arrangement should be beneficial in the long run.

Green County has a new Agriculture Educator in the UW Extension Service office.

The county welcomes to service Jackie McCarville.

This spot has been vacant since the end of 2017, but it was recently approved to be filled. I had the pleasure of meeting Jackie at the last Agricultural Extension and Education Committee meeting.

She will be a valuable asset to the county.

Another goal is to increase adoption of conservation practices, and to encourage more conservation on the landscape that translates into cleaner water in the Sugar River.

Conservation practices typically relate to how to manage the soil – to protect it, stop it from moving off fields into surface waters, and keep it in place and fertile for crops.

At the field day, participants will view a soil pit dug into a growing cornfield so that attendees can see first-hand how deeply corn roots go into the soil and how they interact with soil life and nutrients.

Francisco Arriaga, an assistant professor at UW-Madison, will explain to attendees features present in the pit. Cover crops are another featured field day topic.

There will also be a rainfall simulator demonstration to show participants the effects of rains on different soil management systems.

It’s a great chance to see what happens when it rains on our soils.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. The program will start at 10 and conclude around noon. A free lunch will be served after the program.

All sorts of fun fund-raising activities during this event will take place at Albany Lion’s Club, 402 N. Cincinnati St. A tractor show with awards features free entry registration, with plaques presented to the first 50 exhibitors- tractors.

Tractors must be in place by noon.

This event also includes the toy tractor show, a craft show, a flea market and vendors with farm displays, and accompanying awards.

Raffles will take place (50/50 throughout day, guns and cash drawing at 2:30 p.m.).

Parkview students carry UW Madison Summer Science Camp into school year

Summer camp for Parkview High students couldn’t have inspired them more for fall classes – or for life.

Morgridge Institute for Research, a private interdisciplinary biomedical research organization affiliated with UW-Madison, hosted its 11th annual Summer Science Camp for students and teachers from rural Wisconsin high schools in July.

This camp provides an opportunity to high school students in rural Wisconsin communities to experience the academic excellence and cultural adventures of UW-Madison.

Morgridge Institute and UW Madison hope in hosting science camps to excite rural high school students to consider higher education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Rural high schools across Wisconsin were invited to apply for one of 10 positions for this camp. Once we received our acceptance, fliers explaining the camp were handed out to all interested upcoming juniors and seniors.

Students received a number of

science-related writing prompts to choose from, and each submitted an essay as a form of application.

Science Department members reviewed the essays and selected the top six. We were very happy to invite Lilly Boyd, Hallie Case, Ava Dodge, Ben Fruehe, Kailyn Huff, and Caden Lawrence to attend Science Camp from July 23 to 26. I accompanied the students to Madison as their chaperone.

The academic portions of the camp were held at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (WID) and the chemistry building on the UW Campus. The students heard from leading researchers in the in interdisciplinary field of Regenerative Biology. This not only includes stem cell research, cancer research, but also fields of bioinformatics, tissue engineering, and multi-scale imaging instrumentation.

Many of the speakers and leaders were graduate students, doctoral students and postdoctoral students.

This made a huge impact on our students, as they realized that these smart, motivated, successful people were not that much older than them.

The passion these people showed for their work was exciting in and of itself.

Science camp students were able to perform a number of amazing labs that frankly just made them say, “WOW.” The labs in which Parkview students participated included treatment of breast cancer cells with chemotherapy, editing of an antibiotic resistant gene in Escherichia coli, and an epigenetics lab.

One of the favorites was a lab in which the students were able to see human cardiomyocytes, which had been differentiated from adult human stem cells, beating in a dish.

They then treated these cells with verapamil, a blood pressure drug, and were able to see the cells slow down.

Another favorite was a visit to the Goldsmith Group Lab in the chemistry building, where they got to see single molecules using fluorescent microscopy.

This was my personal favorite and actually brought tears to my eyes.

I never imagined in my life that I would be able to witness something this awe-inspiring.

That this is being done just up the road at UW-Madison made me say, “WOW.” Our days were not all about science. We got to stay in the Dejope Dorm, which is the nicest, newest dorm on campus. It is located on Lake Mendota, and some of us were treated to a room with a view of the lake. We ate our meals in the Dejope dining hall, and the students agreed

that the food was excellent.

The students really enjoyed the campus life experience. We were given a walking tour of the campus and learned some of the history of UW–Madison.

We also took a walk down State Street, ending at the Union Terrace where we sat by the lake and enjoyed famous Babcock Ice Cream, which is made daily at Babcock Hall on campus.

I was, and continue to be, very proud of these students and how they conducted themselves and represented Parkview High School throughout this experience.

They were respectful to all they met, participated positively in all the labs and activities and were genuinely grateful for the opportunity.

All individuals arrested or cited are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Green County Sheriff’s deputies reported the following incidents occurred: Tuesday, Aug. 7 Motor Vehicle Crash At 5:55 a.m., deputies responded to a truck and steer crash in the N1100 block of Mt Hope Road in the Town of Spring Grove.

Ryan W. Kapke, 21, of Brodhead was northbound when he struck a steer in the road. Kapke was not injured and was wearing his seat belt.

The air bags did not deploy. The steer was injured but not killed. Kapke had severe damage to his truck and was later towed from the scene.

Kapke was cited for operating after suspension and was released pending court.

Wednesday, Aug. 8 Traffic Crime At 3:40 p.m., deputies stopped a milk truck in the North 2300 block of Richland Road in the Town of Jefferson.

Investigation resulted in the driver, Eric G. Peterson, 52, of Blanchardville being cited for operating a commercial motor vehicle without a valid Commercial Driver’s License (crime). Peterson was released pending a court appearance.

Thursday, Aug. 9 Domestic Abuse At 10:11 p.m., deputies responded to a domestic abuse case at a residence in the W100 block of County Highway C, Town of Brooklyn. Investigation resulted in Eulalio Pineda Perez, 44, of Brooklyn being arrested

for domestic disorderly conduct. He was held at the Green County Jail pending bond or court.

Friday, Aug. 10 OWI At 8:13 p.m. deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding in the West 5100 block of State Highway 11, Town of Monroe.

Investigation resulted in Sheri A. Reif, 25, of Loves Park, Ill., being arrested for operating while under the influence (alcohol) with a passenger under the age of 16.

Reif was also cited for speeding, seat belt violation, open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration with a passenger under the age of 16.

Reif was held at the Green County Jail pending bond or court.

Saturday, Aug. 11 Traffic Crash At 1:35 a.m., deputies responded to the North 300 block of West River Road in the Town of Cadiz for a single-vehicle crash.

Investigation revealed that Carl J. Klenz, 31 of Ridott, Ill., was operating a vehicle southbound on West River when he failed to negotiate the curve. The vehicle then exited the roadway and collided with a utility pole.

The vehicle sustained disabling damage and airbag deployment.

Klenz reported he was wearing his seatbelt, and no injuries resulting from the crash. The vehicle was removed by Don’s Towing. Alliant Energy assisted at the scene.

Obituaries

CHRISTOPHER N. ALLEN Christopher N. Allen, age 18, passed away unexpectedly on July 25, 2018, in Mesa, Ariz., while vacationing with friends.

He was born in Camden, N.J. on Jan. 3, 2000, the son of Robert T. Allen and Crystal (Allen) Klemm.

Christopher was a Class of 2018 graduate of Parkview High School.

Christopher had worked at Kuhn North America and Brodhead Collision. When he was not working he enjoyed spending time with his brother Dwayne and their friends.

Survivors are his parents, Crystal and Dennis Klemm, Orfordville; biological father, Robert T. Allen, Moorestown, N.J.; grandmother, Darlene Harris, Brodhead; brothers: Nathan Stanley, Palmyra, N.J., and Dwayne Allen,

Orfordville; and a host of family members in New Jersey.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, at NewcomerSilverthorn Chapel on the Hill, 3008 S Coon Island Road, Orfordville.

JEANNETTE FAY PETERSON DAVIS Jeannette Fay Peterson Davis, 79, formerly of Brodhead, passed away at her home in Mesa, Ariz., on June 7, 2018.

She patiently endured many health problems, starting with a liver transplant, then several years of kidney disease, and finally suffering a fall in March.

Jeannette was born June 3, 1939, in Wiota to Sanford and Mary

(Shelton) Peterson.

Her mother said she loved to feed the chickens, loved animals and that her childhood nickname was “Little Sunshine,” because she was a smiling, happy child. Her father said she and Evonne liked to climb trees. She also played clarinet in the school band.

She worked as a beautician before she married Ray E Davis on Sept. 27, 1959, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. They settled in Hinckley, Ill., and Jeannette began her favorite occupation, mother of four and homemaker.

In 1971, the family moved to Mesa. As her children grew, she worked outside the home at Gilson Uniforms, Walgreens, and American Greetings.

In November 1989, Ray and Jeannette moved to Payson, Ariz.

In September 1996, she moved back to Wisconsin with Ray and Mike to be by her ailing mother.

Ray passed away December 1996, and her mother passed away in 1999.

She also worked for a time at Shopko and Swiss Colony in Wisconsin. Her father passed away in 2012, and she returned to Arizona with Mike in July 2013.

Jeannette loved to garden and to sit in the sunshine. She enjoyed watching football, NASCAR racing, and cooking shows— especially the Pioneer Woman.

She is survived by her older sister Evonne (Jerry) Montefelt, Juda; her younger brother Larry (Carmen) Peterson; and her four children: Debora (Randy) Barney, David (Susan) Davis, Dale (Nancy) Davis, and Michael Davis. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Lisa, Steven, Jaclyn, Elena, Lauren, Laura, Thomas, Diane and Joshua; and four great-grandchildren: Cambria, Aiden, Maverick and Eli. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at the D.L. Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead. Burial will be in Moores Cemetery, rural Brodhead. Briggs, Reed Tractor Drive runs 24 miles to picnic on Sept. 1 It’s time for the 14th annual Briggs and Reed tractor drive, and sponsors extend an open invitation to join them for a fun day as summer comes to a close.

This tractor drive takes place Saturday, Sept. 1. Participants will leave Jim Briggs’ farm, 3699 W. Winslow Road, Orangeville, Ill. at 8 a.m.

They will drive 24 miles to Orval Reed’s farm, 7942 Neeseman Road in South Wayne, where they will partake a delicious picnic.

Tractor drive participants will have coffee, juice and snacks at Jim’s farm before embarking.

There will be a stop half way during the trip for a break from the drive.

The ride will reach Reed’s farm about noon. No one has to drive a tractor to enjoy the picnic, nor to go through Reed’s barn filled with lots of “agtiques.”

Please bring a dish to pass.

Beverages, meats, place settings will be furnished.

A vehicle will be present at the start to take the potluck dishes to the endpoint of the tractor drive.
