Guild’s day campers play to standing ovation, joyful crowd at revue in Monroe By Tony Ends

interim editor

Family and friends packed the house last Friday night for Monroe Theatre Guild’s (MTG) Day Camp 2022 Revue. Skits, readings, and musical numbers played warmly to laughter and delight of all ages in the audience. Trios and solos sang tunes from motion picture soundtracks and pop songs, from “Prince Ali” and “We don’t talk about Bruno!” to “Never Gonna Give You Up”

and “Castle on a Hill.” Skits took on “The Day the Internet Died,” and other hilarious challenges we face trying to get along in a cyber world, as if we all don’t find just growing up and coping challenge enough. All MTG day campers filled the stage for a concluding rendition of “A Million Dreams” from “The Greatest Showman,” the 2017 winner of the Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie. Spirits of the audience lifted hopefully out of so much

of the revue followed the Friday night performance in the guild’s theatrical home, 910 16th Avenue, just off Courthouse Square in Monroe.

Next up for the guild is a production of “Little Shop of Horrors,” Oct. 7 to 16, then “eLf the Musical,” Dec. 1 to 11.

Monroe Theatre Guild is keeping live performance on the stage and in youthful souls, a public service worthy of public support.

uncertainty of the day, with 33 young souls singing their hearts out with such hope. “…think of what the world could be, a vision of the one I see. A million dreams is all it’s gonna take. Oh, a million dreams for the world we’re gonna make.” The performance capped the guild’s newly revived summer theatre Day Camp. For 33 young people, ages 10 to 16, the revue served up remarkable acting results with just one week’s preparation. Taking part from all over Green County, the youth learned all about the “behind the scenes” world of theatre from some of MTG’s most dedicated volunteers. Jerry Bredeson, Dave Bristow, Lilly Cherney, Stephen Eliasson, Darren Grinnell, Trevor Klarer, Jules Leverton, Denise Plantenberg, Heather Smith, and Zeke Smith were duly saluted for contributing time and talent to the day campers’ formation. Katie Landmark and Joe Leverton directed the revue, and Jerry Bredeson managed the crew. MTG kept true to its word not to share young people’s names for publication. Yet MTG facilities manager extraordinaire Denise Platenberg did share that a number of students took part in the day camp this year from Orfordville, also Monroe and surrounding townships, and Monticello, Brodhead, and even northern Illinois.
