Juda Zion UMC news JUDA — The third annual Juda Community block party will be held on Friday, Aug. 7, in the Zion UMC parking lot, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

They will serve brats, sweet corn, chips, fresh fruit salad, beverages, ice cream and brownies. Participants are free to bring their own meat to grill.

There will be activities for all ages – plenty of camaraderie and fellowship. Special music will be provided by Rudy and Judy Kaderly. Donations include Rackow’s Family Sausage for the grill and the Dave Brooks family for the sweet corn.

A community photo will be taken at 7 p.m. Festivities are

scheduled to conclude at 8 p.m.

Vacation Bible school will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church in Juda. The theme of this oneday event is “Outback Rock, Where Kids Venture Into Solid Faith.”

On this Aussie adventure, children will explore God’s monumental love and discover what it means to have an unshakable faith. There will be games, music, Bible stores and crafts.

Members of the Juda FFA Alumni held their annual chicken BBQ meal Saturday during Juda’s Fore Fathers event. The meal was just one of several activities held during the weekend that helps to raise funds for community projects, community youth, and persons or organizations in need, all done in the memory of the community’s fore fathers.

When the “back-to-school” bug starts to take over, and as you and your children begin the search for the perfect school supplies, don’t forget about the one thing you can’t buy your child at the store— his or her health. In a school setting, communicable diseases spread quickly and easily. The close contact of the students naturally encourages the transmission of infec-

As an example, here in Rock County, only 28% of our population has received the complete meningococcal vaccine, which protects against meningitis. For our community to reach herd immunity, we have to meet the benchmark of 90-95% vaccinated. Our low vaccination rates leave us at risk.

In addition, vaccinating your teen protects later generations, perhaps even your future grandchildren. If everyone would get vaccinated for a particular disease, we could completely eradicate it. For example, for hundreds of years smallpox killed millions of people. But thanks to global immunization efforts,

Summer heat safety tips to ensure fun in the sun

NATIONWIDE — The summer season and warm weather triggers an urge to be outdoors, but fun in the sun can be dangerous when the heat and humidity rise. In addition to sun burn, heat-related illnesses including heat stroke or sunstroke can send unsuspecting victims to the hospital. The human body keeps itself cool by allowing heat to escape through the skin and by evaporating the resulting perspiration. If the body cannot cool itself enough, the person could suffer from heatrelated illness.

Heat stroke can progress from milder heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and fainting. Illnesses caused by overheating can become serious, and even deadly, if not treated. Exposure to heat kills approximately 400 Americans annually.

Everyone is susceptible to heat-related illnesses, with even young healthy athletes succumbing to it. However, those most at risk include senior citizens, especially those living along in non-air-conditioned environments; infants and children and people with

medical conditions, especially those with heart disease and high blood pressure.

The classic warning symptom of a heat stroke is a body temperature that is above 104 degrees Fahrenheit, but other symptoms include fainting, dizziness and light-headedness, rapid pulse, painful muscle cramps and spasms, headache, lack of sweating despite the heat, nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, dry, hot and red skin and behavioral changes including disorientation. If you or anyone around you has any of these symptoms, 911 should be called immediately. As you wait for emergency services, put damp and cool cloths or towels on the affected person and have them lie down until medical assistance arrives.

Being alert to the symptoms of heat stroke is vital to ensuring your own health and safety as well as your friends and family. However, as Benjamin Franklin said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and heatstroke is preventable. Take these preventative steps to prevent heatstroke this summer: Avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Whenever possible, reserve outdoor activities for the cooler morning and evening hours.

Wear lightweight, loosefitting, light-colored clothing.

Wearing too much clothing or tight clothing won’t allow your body to cool down efficiently.

Stay well-hydrated and avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. Staying hydrated helps you maintain a normal body temperature and drinking excessive caffeinated or alcoholic drinks can dehydrate, rather than hydrate, you.

Eat smaller meals more frequently. Eating small, protein rich meals throughout the day keeps your energy level stabilized.

Never leave children, adults or pets in a closed, parked vehicle. In the sun, closed car temperatures can rise from 78 degrees to 100 degrees in just three minutes.

Spreading the Word by bike Register for hazardous ORFORDVILLE — A Christian biking music ministry group arrived at Orfordville Lutheran Church Tuesday, July 21. Members of Spoke Folk spend the summer touring the United States, and Orfordville Lutheran was part of their Wisconsin tour. Their Wisconsin tour will last 12 days with seven different concerts. They have also had tours this summer in Ohio, Indiana, and Minnesota.

Spoke Folk brought 30 high school and college age youth from all over the United States to Orfordville Lutheran Church. Many were surprised by how hilly Wisconsin is. Spoke Folk is a mission group that trains high school and college students to be missionaries in their daily

lives.

The day the group arrived at Orfordville Lutheran they had biked from Burlington, a 60.3 mile trip. The next stop was Cross Plains, 55 miles by bike. The concert at Purdy Park included contemporary Christian music, a puppet show for children and creative dramas. Many in the group sang solos and a few shared their faith stories. On Tuesday night, the church provided a potluck supper for the group in Purdy Park. They slept in the church basement, and were then fed breakfast at the church before they left.

Looking at beef fat in a whole new way Not all of the fat in beef is created equal. As beef researcher Jeff Savell, Ph.D., describes it, taste fat and waste fat don’t even belong in the same ballpark.

Savell says taste fat, such as the marbling found in steaks, contributes to flavor and has fatty (oleic) acids that can be beneficial to good health. Meanwhile, waste fat, such as that found on the outside of meat cuts, has been reduced substantially over the past few decades and is therefore responsible for less of a role in our diets.

Furthermore, Savell says, marbling fat is helpful simply for that fact that it makes our food taste better.

“Consumers want taste fat, not waste fat,” said Savell, who is university distinguished professor at Texas A&M University. “We can’t avoid the need for a certain amount of fat for eating acceptability.”

Recent beef checkoff-funded research conducted in Texas suggests that as more fat is added in the marbling process, the balance among the different fatty acids is improved because oleic acid, one of the monounsaturated fats, replaces saturated fat. The study, co-authored

by Stephen Smith, Ph.D., of Texas A&M University and Brad Johnson, Ph.D., of Texas Tech University, supports the concept that monounsaturated fat in beef not only improves flavor, but by controlling the feeding of cattle you can naturally modify the animal so that its beef contains a more desirable balance of fat.

While longer periods of grain feeding increase marbling fat, enhance taste and improve the ratio between beef’s saturated and unsaturated fats, more than 50 percent of the fat in all beef is monounsaturated, a fact often overlooked by both health professionals and consumers.

Meanwhile, industry efforts over the past 40 years have been reducing the amount of unwanted external fat. In fact, since the 1970s the industry has demonstrated a 29 percent reduction in saturated fat contributed by beef per capita. Furthermore, about 65 percent of whole muscle beef cuts sold at retail today meet government standards for lean, and 17 of the top 25 most popular cuts sold at retail are lean. Since the 1980 Dietary Guidelines for Americans were issued, external fat on retail beef cuts has decreased by 81 percent.

“It’s been a gate-to-plate effort by every segment of the beef chain to make changes the consumers want,” according to Angie Horkan, Director of Marketing for the Wisconsin Beef Council. From cattle ranchers who raised leaner animals, to packers and processors who closely trimmed beef cuts, everyone has stepped up to

make it happen.”

According to Horkan, the Beef Checkoff Program has played a key role in helping make this happen, funding much of the core research establishing the needs, as well as the efforts to get information into the right hands.

“Every pivotal point in this journey has had a checkoff element,” says Shalene McNeill, Ph.D., R.D., executive director of human nutrition research at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, a beef checkoff contractor.

“The efforts we have made as an industry (in research and consumer education) have helped give us credibility and a platform.”

When it comes to nutrition, though, the discussion is becoming part of a bigger picture that will require the

McNeill says the positive fat story shows that the entire discussion of lean, which has led to a “good food/bad food” perception, is wrong. “All cuts have a place, and in fact even cuts with more fat can fit within a healthful diet,” she says. “People are really open to a balance of fat today.”

“We need to be able to stress the point that beef is simply a better food; a nutritious, valuable food for a better eating experience that features the taste it is known for,” says Horkan. “The fact is, about 40 percent of many American diets can be considered ‘junk’ food. We need to help consumers understand that not only is nutritious, flavorful beef a good food choice, it belongs in the discussion of a balanced, healthful diet.”

Beef Exports Benefit International Customers, U.S. Producers For U.S. beef producers to be successful, they must maximize the value of each animal they raise. One of the ways of achieving this goal is through international sales. While the Wisconsin Beef Council celebrates Beef Month in July by showing consumers many great ways to enjoy beef, some beef cuts command a much better price outside this country’s borders. Exporting these items pays excellent dividends for Wisconsin cattle producers.

“Beef variety meats like tongue, liver and tripe have limited value in this country,” according to John Freitag, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Beef Council. “By expanding our marketing reach for these kinds of products, we’re helping build demand for the entire beef animal.”

In 2014, the U.S. beef industry set a new record for export value, shipping $7.13 billion worth of beef muscle cuts and variety meat across the globe – an increase of $1 billion over the previous year. Export value per head of fed cattle processed also set a new record of $300 – a figure that has more than doubled in the past five years.

Some of the best examples of adding value through beef exports occur in Japan, which recently reclaimed its position as the No. 1 value market for U.S. beef exports. Japan is easily the top destination for U.S. beef tongues, about 90 percent of which are consumed outside the United States. Japan’s purchases of U.S. tongue have surged since the age limit for U.S. cattle eligible for the Japanese market was raised from 21 months to 30 months in February 2013. Japan is also the leading destination for U.S. short plate, a forequarter cut that is exceptionally popular with Japan’s quick-service beef bowl restaurant chains.

U.S. short ribs are also a popular export item, with at least

60 percent shipped to Asian markets such as South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan.

These same markets take the majority of U.S. rib fingers, skirts and hanging tenders, and they are leading destinations for U.S. chuck rolls and shoulder clods.

Mexico is the second-largest value market for U.S. beef exports, purchasing a high volume of end cuts such as goosenecks and other round cuts, as well as shoulder clods. These cuts are also popular export items for Central and South America.

In addition to beef tongue, exports of other beef variety meat items are a major driver of U.S. carcass value. The Middle East is the top destination for U.S. variety meat, driven primarily by Egypt’s imports of livers, kidneys and hearts.

Mexico is also a major purchaser of variety meat, taking a wide range of items including tripe, lips, hearts, sweetbreads, and intestines. Heart and tripe are popular items in Peru, the top South American market for U.S. beef variety meat.

“As we in Wisconsin celebrate Beef Month in July, our cattle producers can take pride in knowing they are providing consumers across the globe with a safe and enjoyable product,” according to John Freitag. “At the same time, they’re taking control of their future and helping improve their own bottom line by investing in programs that help build demand for beef outside of our borders.”

Through programs managed by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), a contractor to the Beef Checkoff Program, U.S. beef is marketed in more than 80 countries through retail and restaurant promotions, trade shows and educational seminars demonstrating the positive attributes of U.S. beef for importers, distributors, restaurateurs and consumers.

Henderson joins Weston Noble Alumni Choir for final reunion concert

DECORAH, Iowa — Roald Henderson of Albany, will join the Weston Noble Alumni Choir in Decorah for its ninth and final reunion concert in Decorah.

The choir, representing Luther classes from 1949 to 2013, meet for five days of intense rehearsals starting July 26 and culminating in the final reunion concert that features a performance by award winning tenor Eric Cutler, Luther class of 1999.

The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, July 31, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther College campus in Decorah.

Weston Noble, Johnson Professor Emeritus of Music at Luther, had a 57-year tenure in conducting and teaching at Luther. Noble, along with Luther Assistant Professor of Music Andrew Last, will conduct the final reunion concert, which is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The 2015 concert features an entr’acte appearance by Eric Cutler, whose singing career has taken him across the United States and Europe, from the Metropolitan Opera to London, Rome and Australia. After a short solo program, Cutler will be joined by Aaron Gentes, Luther class of 1998, also a Nordic alum, now working in the

Chicago area in the fields of music and information technology. The duo will reprise their 1998 Concerto Competition award-winning performance of “Au fond du temple saint” (“At the back of the holy temple”), from the opera “The Pearl Fishers” by Georges Bizet.

The choir program features favorites of Luther College Nordic Choir singers over the years: “Verbum caro factus est” by Hans Leo Hassler; “Give ear to my words, O Lord” by Paul Fetler; “Let the people praise Thee” by Maurice Monhardt; “The Ground” (Sunrise Mass Mvt. 4)

Gap Church to host hymn sing and open house ALBANY — The 2015 Gap Church Museum, Inc. Old Fashion Hymn Sing will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Robert Haigler of Albany will return for the third year as the featured musician for the event on the keyboard.

Also returning for the second year is the group “Finally Here”. Making up the group are Al Watson of Albany (bass player), Ernie Saunders of Brodhead (acoustic guitar, and Jeff and Liz Wagner of German Valley, Ill. (acoustic guitars and vocals).

Some of the documents available for viewing at the open house are copies of the original membership list 1850 to 1969, church records beginning 1850, minutes of the Soldiers Aid Society that began in 1862 and more.

Information about the cemetery will also be available.

Refreshment will be served after the hymn sing. There is no charge for this event, but a good will offering will be taken. All money received will be used for the repairs of the church building.

The church & cemetery are located four miles west of Albany on highway 59.

Letter to the Editor: July 22, 2015 — I am writing this letter in regard to an article from June 24 entitled (City adopts dam policy). My friends and neighbors with properties on Decatur Lake question this change. There has always been a policy which was agreed to by the DNR, the City of Brodhead, and the Lake Association. Years ago we all contributed for the new dam.

Everyone agreed that ownership be turned over to the City of Brodhead and they would accept the responsibility for putting the boards on in the spring and removing them in the fall. For over 30 years this has been done amicably by the City of Brodhead. Lately, someone is making that procedure a HUGE problem. The board placement adds 6” to our water level on the lake. This may not sound like much, but by not putting the boards on the dam – boat traffic is nearly impossible, weeds have taken over and the natural flow of the water is non-existent.

It is important that everyone knows that no one harassed the public works supervisor (Rich Vogel).

I am dropping copies of three letters written by lake home owners to Mr. Pinnow and the council.

We certainly would not expect someone to risk life and limb to do their job. The new policy that

was adopted will only allow board installation if the flow is less than six inches on the top of the dam. We question why it is safer, more efficient and cost effective to have someone measure and keep a log on a timely basis. The obvious answer is: No boards will be put on at all. Another article indicates that the DNR responded that the way the boards are being handled is fine. But, they are not being handled at all. When I delivered letters from the lake home owners and copies of newspaper articles to their office in Fitchburg, they had no knowledge of a policy change. Which brings me to the question, how can one person request a change without input and guidance from property owners and the DNR? All of us on the lake participate in downtown social events, shop at the local grocery store, play golf, frequent all eating establishments and pay our taxes with a large portion going to Brodhead. The putting on of the boards is just a band aide. But without the Lake what happens to the race? Something to think about perhaps.

The position will require install, repair and maintain metal fabricating equipment, including CO2 laser and plasma cutting machines, press brakes and shears, and MIG welding systems supporting production operations.

Strong skills in industrial electricity, CNC, hydraulics, high pressure air, welding, torch cutting, carpentry, plumbing, and heating are preferred.

Parts Distribution Warehouse (2nd Shift) - The position involves receiving, picking, packing and shipping service/repair parts. A basic understanding of parts inventory, keyboarding, and basic math skills, ability to operate a forklift / work assist vehicle, and frequently lift/move up to 35 lbs. is required. Ag/Farm equipment knowledge is a plus. The successful candidate must possess effective verbal and written communications skills.

Camping fees go up at state parks and forests MADISON — Camping fees for Wisconsin state parks, state forests, state trails, and state recreation increased July 28, 2015.

The fee increases were enacted as part of the 2015-2017 biennial state budget. The legislation calls for the fee increases to go into effect as soon as changes can be made to the camping reservation system.

The increase in camping fees is based on a three-level rate structure that will place the parks at a camping rate depending on demand, uniqueness, location and other factors. Camping rates will increase between $3 and $6 per night for residents and between $6 and $9 per night for non-residents.

There is an increase in the per night charge for electrical service from $5

to $10.

Any reservations for 2015 and 2016 dates that were made prior to the rate change on July 28, will be honored at the price that was in effect at the time. Any extensions or changes to an existing reservation will result in the additional days being charged at the new rate.

Admission fees and trail passes were also increased in the state budget, but

will not begin until annual stickers and passes for 2016 go on sale in December 2015, with an effective date of Jan. 1, 2016. Annual admission sticker fees will increase from $25 to $28 for state residents, from $35 to $38 for non-residents and $10 to $13 for resident seniors. Annual trail passes will increase from $20 to $25 for an annual pass and from $4 to $5 for a daily pass.

Leon C. Balsiger, 91, formerly of Juda, passed away on July 21, 2015. A memorial service was held at his residence, Pacifica Senior Living, Chino Hills, Calif. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe, Wisconsin.

Keith Herman Church

April 17, 1947 - July 17, 2015 VIRGINA BEACH — Keith Herman Church, 68, of Virginia Beach formally of Brodhead, passed away July 17, 2015 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 35 years, Sonja Church; five sons Bret, Brian, Scott, David and Michael.

He is predeceased by his parents Roy Church in 1988, and Rosalee Church, Dec. 16, 2014, his brother, James in 1986, and a son, Brad in 2003.

A visitation was held on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd. Virginia Beach, Va. Graveside services were conducted on Monday, July 20, 2015 at Albert G. Horton Veterans’ Cemetery, 5310 Milners Rd. Suffolk, Va.

BRODHEAD — Charlotte Janes died July 20, 2015 at Woods Crossing in Brodhead.

She was born in Brodhead, the daughter of Frances (Pinnow) and Lee Hall, in 1924.

She lived her entire life in Green County, a proud graduate of Brodhead High School (‘42). She and Palmer “Bud” Janes were married for 44 years; he died in 1995.

Charlotte was a bright and outspoken person who challenged herself to learn, joining the personal computer movement early on.

A day rarely passed that a joke or words of wisdom didn’t arrive in our inboxes. An accomplished pianist, her repertoire spanned Beethoven to sing-alongs at Woods Crossing. Charlotte was endowed with boundless energy; she baked, quilted, gardened, sewed, Tai Chi’d. She supported the aspirations of her children and was proud of their stud-

ies at UW-Madison; Charlotte doted on her grandchildren and they on her.

Charlotte was an active, lifetime member of Brodhead United Methodist Church and is survived by her daughters Sally (Mike) Fisher of Rochester, Minn., and Susan (Gordon) Ridley of Madison, and grandchildren: Megan (Josh) Kaye, New York City, and Andrew Ridley of Minneapolis. She was predeceased by her husband, her son Tim in 1978, and her sister Phyllis Wallisch.

A funeral service was held at the Brodhead United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at 11 a.m. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brodhead United Methodist Church (501 1st Center Avenue, Brodhead, Wis. 53520) or to the Brodhead High School scholarship. The Everson Funeral Home assisted the family.
