Aging and disability resource center hosts help and activities Memory Café hosts family, friends and fun Rock Aging & Disability Resource Center hosts a monthly opportunity for people living with memory loss, Alzheimer’s and other related dementias and their care partners to enjoy social interaction with others on

a similar journey. The Café meets on the second Thursday of each month at 1 p.m. at the Beloit Public Library, 605 Eclipse Blvd., Beloit.

A memory café is a welcoming place for people with memory loss or dementia and their care partners to talk with others

who understand what you are going through, to leave behind limitations and instead focus on strengths, to enjoy other’s company and to explore something new.

Conservation practices among producer-led groups in the state’s watershed protection program rose by 23% from 2020 to 2021.

Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) released the 2020-2021 impact report for the Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grant Program last week.

Reported practices help reduce soil erosion and phosphorus loss from farm fields, ensuring that nutrients go into farmers’ crops instead of local soil and water sources.

“In Wisconsin, farmers serve as a significant economic driver, feed our families, strengthen the fiber of our communities, and preserve our rich soil and vital water resources,” stated DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski in a release on the report.

“The producer-led program is critically important in ensuring a strong future for Wisconsin’s agriculture industry,” Romanski stated.

“With the help of increased funding from the 2019-2021 biennial state budget, produc-

er-led groups again had the opportunity to build strong connections to help address conservation needs in rural areas and protect our state’s water quality and soil health.”

DATCP’s Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grant Program data shows this is an effective way to increase the use of conservation practices across farmland. DATCP’s analysis shows there were 807 farmer members participating in producer-led groups covering 526,846 acres of Wisconsin cropland in 2021.

These groups conducted 129 outreach events to fellow farmers and community members, reaching 5,124 attendees on conservation and water quality topics in agriculture.

The groups started and maintained 26 on-farm demonstration and research projects, which help farmers, landowners and agricultural professionals learn and innovate on new soil health strategies and conservation systems.

Total reported conservation practice acres rose to 978,881 acres in 2021 from 798,221

Investigation found that Thomas F. Gempeler, 56 of Monroe, was backing a Green County Highway Department truck attempting to create a larger work zone near the intersection where workers were laying down seal coat.

He was backing up the vehicle to get farther away from the paving unit that was coming towards him.

The vehicle behind him was operated by Kourtney Pipenger, 27, of Orfordville and was not able to back up further due to another unknown vehicle behind her.

Child porn alleged in New Glarus arrest Green County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau was requested July 21 to assist New Glarus Police with an investigation into an adult male allegedly exposing a juvenile child to harmful materials during the course of his employment.

The Detective Bureau teamed with Green County Child Protective Services com-

pleted further investigation into the case on July 22.

The investigation determined that several photographs depicting nudity were shown to a juvenile child.

As a result of the investigation Joseph N. Carlson 45, of New Glarus was arrested and charged with Exposing a Child to Harmful Materials - Felony.

Carlson was conveyed to the Green County Jail where he is held pending court. Detectives continue investigation into this incident.

Green County Sheriff’s Office is active in the multi-disciplinary team including New Glarus Police, Child Protective Services, Child Advocacy Center and District Attorney’s

Office.

The multi-disciplinary team works together to assist children and families to provide a wraparound approach to victims of abuse.

By Wisconsin law, a charge is an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Beloit Janesville Orchestra announces auditions Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra will hold auditions in August for section violin, section viola, section cello, section bass; principal viola, principal tuba, principal piano, principal percussion; and sublist auditions for any orchestral instrument.

A committee, including BJSO Music Director Rob Tomaro, and principal musicians, will hear the auditions.

About BJSO Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra is approaching its 70th year.

It is the professional symphony orchestra of Rock County.

In addition to its series of classical and pops concerts, each year it performs Independence Day concerts in Janesville and Beloit, which are offered free to the audience.

Sauk rotational grazing revival among State land conservation reports, topics Aug. 2

Strong interest in putting cows back on the land has sparked a “renaissance of pasture walks and grazing networking” in Sauk County.

That report from the county’s land resources and conservation staff is among agenda items the state Land and Water Conservation Board (LWCB) will consider next week in a virtual meeting open to the public.

The board will hold its official business meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, via Microsoft Teams, and anyone can tune into the proceeding.

In its review of Sauk’s 5-year progress report and plan, the meeting shares insight into what landowners around Wisconsin are doing to conserve vital resources.

Sauk farmers’ interest in converting cropland to rotational grazing has resulted since 2018 thanks to federal funding associated with the Baraboo River Regional Conservation Partnership Program and Multi discharger Variance program funding, according to the Sauk report.

“Monthly pasture walks and grazing specific workshops and presentations are well attended,” stated Lisa Wilson, Sauk Land Resources and Environmental Department Director in the report.

The program saw a 20% increase in cropland receiving cover crops, a 34% increase in acres managed using no-till practices and 46% increase in nutrient management planning.

Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grants deadline DATCP is accepting applications for the grants through Sept. 16.

Since its inception in 2015, DATCP has awarded more than $4.2 million to 41 groups in watersheds across the state.

Grant projects have focused on providing conservation education to farmers, conducting on-farm demonstrations and research, issuing incentive payments for implementing conservation practices, organizing field days, and

Through 2021-2023 budget, Gov. Tony Evers authorized an increase to annual program funding.

DATCP will award up to $1 million in Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grants in 2023, and eligible groups can receive up to $40,000.

Sauk youth programs and educational activities are being revamped along with new and innovative programs promoting practices like rotational grazing.

Rotational grazing is surely attracting interests from more than federal and state incentives.

The practice in dairy and livestock production cuts production, fuel, input, and veterinary expenses, putting animals to work on grass and managing pastures at a time of intense inflationary pressure.

The board reviews county land and water plans and makes recommendations.

It recommends how the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection should allocate conservation funds to counties.

It approves releases from farmland preservation agreements (if they were signed before July 1, 2009). It also provides a forum to discuss emerging soil and water conservation issues The LWCB has 11 members, three each from county land conservation​committees and state agency leaders, one governor-appointed member serving a 2-year term, ​and four governor-appointed members representing urban, rural, river management and natural resource​ preservation inter​est.

chair, and he has also been the executive director of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway Board since the inception of that project in January 1990.

Cupp has been a member of the Wisconsin Land and Water Conservation Board since 2000.

The Riverway Board is another model and instructional resource for counties across Wisconsin on inspiring ways farmers and landowners can protect water and soil and still find profitability.

Gov. Tommy Thompson signed Wisconsin Act 31 which created the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway in 1989.

The Riverway legislation was from a compromise legislators from both political parties crafted. The Riverway extends 92.3 miles from below the dam at Prairie du Sac to the confluence with the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chien, and it encompasses 95,893 acres.

The Lower Wisconsin State Riverway Board, was created to administer the new law. The Board is composed of nine members of which six must be local residents or local elected officials from the affected counties (Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Grant, Iowa, Richland and Sauk). The agency administers a system of “performance standards” which are designed to protect the aesthetic integrity of the Riverway.

ADRC to host speaker Marty Schreiber Aging & Disability Resource Centers of Rock County and Southwest Wisconsin will host former Wisconsin Governor Marty Schreiber, a panel of male caregivers, and brunch at the Kelch Aviation Museum, North 2463 Airport Road in Brodhead on Thursday, Aug. 4.

Registration starts at 10 a.m. with brunch service beginning at 10:30 a.m., but preregistration is required.

Schreiber, author of My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver, will provide opening remarks for the group, followed

by a panel of local male caregivers who will share their stories and lessons learned in caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s or other related dementia.

Tim Harrington, Community Outreach Coordinator of Alzheimer’s Association’s Wisconsin Chapter, will moderate the panel.

Reports from the National Family Caregiver Association and AARP indicate that upwards of 45% of family caregivers are male.

In addition, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that twothirds of all those diagnosed

with Alzheimer’s disease are women.

Consequently, men will continue to be caregivers in large numbers. Statics also indicate that men are less likely to reach out and ask for help.

Karen Tennyson, dementia care specialist of Rock County, states, “My role is to provide assistance and education to all those in Rock County with a dementia diagnosis and their caregivers. We want this targeted program to be a step in that process. I hope this opens more doors for male caregivers to reach out and know they are

not alone.”

The program is completely free and will include a brunch from Knute’s. Attendees are welcome to tour the Kelch Aviation Museum after the program. The museum is open until 4 p.m.

Name released in July 17 utility vehicle fatality Green County Sheriff’s Office released the name of Diane M. Nelson, 78, last week, as the person who died in a July 17 fatal farm accident.

Deputies responded to a request that they check on Nelson’s welfare in the West 4400 block of Fairfield Road in the Town of Jefferson.

Upon arriving at the small farm deputies located Nelson. They said she had been struck by a John Deere utility vehicle. She was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Initial investigation revealed that she was operating the vehicle and was struck after she parked and exited the vehicle.

Green County Coroner’s office refused comment last week pending an ongoing investigation into the incident.

Any resident or business with a small amount of motor oil, batteries, electronics, fluorescent lamps and ballasts, or antifreeze/engine coolant should be able to use the services on the recycler list all year, just call the service for volume limits and any fees.

Residents should also check with their solid waste hauler to find out what recycling services are available and when.

Many drop-offs are operated by retailers who recycle the products they sell, and some even offer trade-in deals on electronics or auto batteries.

Other sites specialize in recycling and can handle households up to large business recycling.

In the past few years, recycling has expanded to include more sites and more types of materials.

While latex paint recycling has been offered by a few businesses for about 5 years, oilbased paint recycling is now available for a small fee per gallon at four local hardware stores.

Several stores now accept alkaline batteries in addition to most rechargeable batteries.

Three county recyclers now accept fluorescent lamp ballasts.

Recycling and disposal at home or away has gotten easier with online zip code or county searches for sharps drop-offs (national), electronics collections (Wisconsin), and Earth911 (national) for a long list of materials and recycling services.

a pharmacy, members should call ahead for information about what vaccines are available and how to schedule appointments.

They should bring their SeniorCare card with them when they go. Members will be able to take advantage of this benefit later this month after they receive notice by mail.

“Vaccines offer critical protection from disease for people of any age,” said DHS Secretary-designee Karen Timberlake.

“Being able to help Wisconsin’s seniors get many of the vaccines they need at their local pharmacies continues the success we’ve had in working with our pharmacy partners to make vaccines more accessible in communities across Wisconsin. By expanding vaccine coverage for the SeniorCare Program, we hope to see an increase in vaccination rates for preventable diseases.”

Created in 2002, SeniorCare is a prescription drug assistance program for Wisconsinites who are 65 years of age or older. In April 2019, Gov. Evers announced that CMS had approved a 10-year extension of the waiver that allows the state to offer the program. The governor first proposed requiring SeniorCare to cover vaccines in a package of COVID-19 relief legislation he announced in April 2020, and the Legislature later included the provision in 2019 Wisconsin Act 185. Currently more than 100,000 seniors are enrolled in the program.

Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services recently announced Wisconsin’s SeniorCare Program has received approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to cover certain vaccines that members receive in pharmacies.

Vaccines covered include those that protect against shingles, tetanus, meningitis, and Hepatitis A and B. These vaccines are recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for adults aged 65 and older.

“Access to health care shouldn’t just be for the healthy and the wealthy, and that’s why we’ve worked hard to expand coverage for aging and older adults by fully funding SeniorCare, pushing for BadgerCare expansion, and proposing comprehensive legislation to reduce prescription drug prices,” said Gov. Evers. “Requiring SeniorCare to cover vaccines is another important step in ensuring older adults can get the care they need and stay healthy.”

Members with other insurance that covers vaccines, such as Medicare Part D, must first utilize their primary coverage and then SeniorCare will cover any copays or deductibles. SeniorCare members with Medicare Part B coverage, must continue to get some vaccines—such as those that protect against the flu, pneumonia, or COVID-19— at a doctor’s office.
