Green County 4-H award winners announced

On the closing Sunday of the Green County Fair a 4-H Recognition Ceremony was held in honor of the outstanding achievements made by area youth participants.

In addition, the 2017 graduates of 4-H were also recognized.

The Cindi Miller Memorial Scholarship winners this year were Ben Horn and Travis Oliver, both of Jolly Mixers 4-H group.

Cindi Miller was an active leader of the Juda Jolly Juniors, adult advisor for the Green County Leaders Association and Green County Fair Superintendent of Photography. Following her death in 2015, Cindi’s husband Daryl, and children Tori and Dustin, decided to form a scholarship fund in Cindi’s memory. All three members of Cindi’s immediate family were at the ceremony to present to both recipients.

Celebrate the 6th running of the Brodhead Jaycees Fun Run by dressing as your favorite super hero.

Albany artisans offer admirable array in one afternoon

Just a five minute drive from Albany the Gap Museum and Friends of the Gap presented the 4th Annual Gap Church Bash Craft And Vendor Show and Cemetery Walk from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on July 15th. The Cemetery Walk was held from 10-11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. A concession stand sold grilled cheese and grilled hot dogs, onions and pickles, among other items.

The Gap Church was built in 1856.

People had started coming to Green County in 1836.

In 1840 the population of Green County in 1840 was 933. The Gap Church Bash utilizes the community room of this church, the front lawn and the adjacent cemetery. The vendors at the bash were Scentsy wax warmers, Diane’s Unique Floral Gifts, Usbone Books and More (children’s books), Lula Roe Women’s clothing, Plunder Jewelry, Andrew Oliver photography, Gordon Klossner wood crafts and Jenny Burns trinkets.

The vendors were mainly from Green County. Gordon Klossner’s woodcrafts, Diane’s Unique Floral

Gifts and Jenny Burns Trinkets were all homemade.

A silent auction was also held. The Gap Church Bash is to benefit the Gap Heather Schwark of Usborne Books stands beside a selection of Church Museum and to maintain the children’s books she had on offer at the Albany Gap Church Bash church and cemetery.

Wendy Tschudy from the Gap Board was the tour guide on the Cemetery Walk, which featured the graves of 27 veterans, mainly from the area. Abraham Burt born 1842 was the first of the graves. He grew up down the road and died in the Civil War in Louisiana.

On Saturday, July 29th, Albany will be hosting a free youth flag football camp for any boy or girl entering grades 1-8.

Registration for the camp can be completed online at https://goo.gl/ forms/vAUVRsdQtPqNNrMJ2 or you may also register the same day of the event starting at 7:30 a.m. The camp will promptly begin at 8 a.m. and will end around 11:45 a.m.

The camp will focus on teaching the basic skills of football and finish the event with flag football games. Three USA Football-certified varsity high school coaches will lead activities, and you will also meet a former NFL player that spent a few months with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

What you will need to bring • Molded (non-metal) football, baseball, or softball cleats

(tennis shoes are acceptable as well) • Water bottle (water refilling containers are provided) • Signed camp waiver form must be turned into the registration table before the event begins at 8 a.m.

Meet the Madison Wolves The Madison Wolves are a semi-pro football team from the Madison East area. The Wolves became a franchise 5 years ago and currently play in the Iron Athletes Football League. The team consists of players who have played at the high school, college, or professional football levels. We are excited to announce that six players from the Madison Wolves will be coming to Albany to help coach during this camp.

Gene and Elsie Mathewson celebrate 60th anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Roland (Gene) Mathewson, Orfordville, Wis., will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with their children hosting the family and bridal party at the Butterfly Club, 5246 E. County Road X, Beloit, Wis. Roland Eugene (Gene) and Elsie Mae Olmstead were married on July 27, 1957, at Luther Valley Church.

Roland retired in 1993 after 42 years at Beloit Corporation. Elsie was employed 11 years at Freeman Shoe Corporation, 12 years at Garrigan Law Firm, and retired in 1994 after 20 years at the Beloit Post Office.

They have 2 children – Susan (Brent) Yonke of Milton, Wis., and Duane (Michelle) Mathewson of Orfordville, Wis.; 6 grandchildren Carrie (Ajay), Matthew (Chelsea), Brittany, Brianna (Zachary), Patrick, and Cassidy; and 2 great-grandchildren - Zoey and Joe.

The Town of New Glarus Parks Commission will hold a Well Water Workshop at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, in the New Glarus High School Auditorium, 1701 2nd St., New Glarus.

UW-Extension personnel will be on hand to review the results of our recent well water testing program, describe what the results mean and answer questions.

Everyone is invited to attend. New Glarus residents who purchased the full battery of tests have been entered into a drawing to receive one of three $100 cash prizes and one of four $25 cash prizes.

We will award those prizes at the workshop.

UW-Extension in cooperation with the Green County Milk Quality Council will be sponsoring Dairy Facility Farm Tours on Thursday, August 24, 2017.

The tours will include six dairy farms located in Green County, all of whom have all made modernization improvements to their dairy facilities to increase productivity and animal comfort, as well as reduce labor.

The Dairy Modernization Tours are held every two years and attract dairy producers and agriculture professionals from over 12 counties and three states. The tours are popular with dairy farmers, as they feature an open house format in which dairy producers can visit any number of the six farms they wish between 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is no central meeting place or any formal presentation for the tours. Farmers can simply select which farms they would like to visit on their own time schedule between 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, August 24.

A farm representative will be on hand at each farm to answer questions for the tour participants.

The tours will feature various sizes of dairy farms with herds ranging from 75 to 475 cows. For producers interested in upgrading their milking facilities, the tours will include a free flow robotic milking system, Swing 12 and 14 Parabone parlors, along with double 12 and 15 Parallel parlors that

are all built inside new buildings.

The tour will also include one Auto flow parlor that was built inside an existing dairy barn.

Several milk cow housing configurations will be featured on the tours including: three, four and six-row free stall barns with natural ventilation systems and drive-through feeding. One of the farms will feature inflatable sidewall curtains, flexible free stall dividers, and a high tension fabric roof. Bedding systems featured in the barns will include sand on four of the farms, with two farms using water beds.

The tours will include two young calf housing facilities. Each building was designed for baby calves from 0 to 2 months of age. One barn features an automatic calf feeding system and positive pressure ventilation. The other barn features both individual and small group pens.

Several manure handling systems will be included on the tours.

Many of the host farms on the tour have daily scraping systems with mini-manure pits for short-term storage. Four of the farms feature gravity flow manure transfer systems to the storage pits.

One farm features a long-term 1.5 million round concrete storage structure with a built-in access ramp to remove settled sand.

These tours are designed to help generate ideas for dairy producers who are considering future im-

provements and modernization in their own dairy facilities. Host farmers will be on hand to share their experiences in the building process, and to explain what they like about their facility and what they might change if they were to do it again. Tour participants will be required to wear plastic boots that will be supplied at each of the farms.

The Brodhead Historical Society will hold their next meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017.

There will be a short business meeting, followed by a presentation by our featured speaker, Donald Brinkmeier, of Madison, Wis. Donald is a 1949 graduate of Brodhead High School. His parents owned “Ben’s Lunch”,

and he has many stories to share about growing up in Brodhead during the 1930’s and 1940’s, as well of memories of the downtown businesses during that time.

It was humbling to return to being the student. It was embarrassing to no longer be familiar and well-informed about the subjects I was studying. My limited retention of high school Spanish managed to get me through the first day, maybe even two.

Then I was in new territory. My ability to learn was getting stretched anew.

My love of reading, merely for the joy of reading, was bruised almost beyond repair. My reading ability, for the purpose of knowledge and skill, was inadequate due to the sheer amount and variety of required reading.

My writing, after years of writing sparsely and efficiently for the speed-reading of those in manufacturing, was totally inadequate and unacceptable. I was not only not equal to the abilities of classmates; I was relearning everything I’d come to know.

Language, reading, writing, arguing, convincing others of my perspective, all of

these were no longer tools for my use to be the expert.

I had to accept my role as student. It took time. It took great teachers and fantastic classmates. It took a faith-filled spouse whose trust of the future was far more consistent than mine.

Yet, the days and weeks passed. The months, then years, too. I passed seminary.

I redeveloped my passion for ministry during internship. I was called to my first congregation.

I learned and grew, I loved them and they loved me. The same came with the second call. Now being loved and taught and still growing in my third call, I am blessed. God’s faithfulness comes through God’s endless grace.

The undeserving love which caused God to create everything first, including you and me. God’s grace comes, which renews and redeems and restores us.

Grace nudges us and challenges us to journey to become, as Martin Luther says, “little Christ’s” to one another. We receive and we share God’s endless grace.

Tires Tires are just as important in the summer as they are in the winter.

For example, heavy summer rains can cause your car to hydroplane. Most people don’t know this, but your tires with the most tread should always be on the rear of the car. This helps prevent “fish tailing” where the rear of your car shifts around and causes you to looe control of your vehicle.

Check your tires. Make sure the

tire is inflated to the proper specifications for your car. You can find that information on a sticker inside the driver door, usually near the latch.

Also, tires are recommended for replacement after they are 10 years old according to NHTSA (U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.)

Rubber can become degraded and start to crack, leading to a possible tire blowout.

Every tire manufactured and sold in the U.S. since 2000 has a ‘build date’ stamped on them.

Fluids Check all fluids, especially coolant. Coolant is what keeps your engine from overheating in warm summer months - but also check your power steering fluid, transmission fluid, engine oil and brake fluid.

These are all sealed systems, if any are low, it may indicate a leak.

It would be a good idea to get them looked at.

Have your battery tested, as winter is hard on batteries. They can be depleted up to 60 percent faster when the weather is colder. This leads to failures in the summer.

Cabin Filter Replace your cabin filter if your vehicle has one. Summer time is prime allergy season. Cabin filters help keep allergens from getting trapped in your car, and keep you from breathing pollen, dirt and dust every time you get in.

Alignment Have an alignment performed - most manufacturers suggest having one done every 18,000 miles.

During the winter months, you can slip and slide into curbs and ditches.

This can knock your alignment out.

Giving your car in alignment helps with not only tire wear but can also help with fuel economy.

Common summertime repairs A/C repairs - Most of the time, what is needed is a recharge of the refrigerant.

Batteries - Hot summer days can be hard on the starting and charging system Overheating - Most overheating problems happen because the coolant is low. Add coolant and take it to a repair facility to have the system checked for leaks or any other concerns that may have caused the problem.

If your car starts to overheat, the

first thing you should do is find a safe place to pull over and shut your car off.

If your engine overheats too much, it can damage the engine.

Next, turn on your heat at full speed.

Your heater core inside the dash is like a small radiator and your blower is like your radiator fan. This can aid in cooling your car down.

Never remove your radiator cap until the car has cooled down, because the system is pressurized when it is hot. If it’s not cooled down and you remove the cap, the coolant can spray out and burn your own.

A good way to know it is safe to open is to squeeze the radiator hose. If it squeezes easily, there is no more pressure in the system.

(95% lean) 2. 2 cups pasta sauce (any variety) 3. 1 cup diced onion 4. 1 cup diced red bell pepper 5. 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning 6. 1/4 teaspoon salt 7. 6 English muffins, split, toasted 8. 1/2 cup reduced-fat shredded

Cheddar cheese 9. 1/4 cup reduced-fat shredded mozzarella cheese INSTRUCTIONS FOR MUFFIN-STYLE CHEESEBURGER PIZZA Preheat oven to 400°F. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add Ground Beef;

cook 8 to 10 minutes, breaking beef into small crumbles, stirring occasionally. Add pasta sauce, onion, bell pepper, Italian seasoning and salt; continue cooking 5 minutes or until vegetables are crisp-tender, stirring occasionally.

Top each muffin half evenly with beef mixture and cheeses.

Bake at 400°F 5 to 7 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Test Kitchen Tips: Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed Ground Beef.

Ground Beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160ºF. Color is not a reliable indicator of Ground Beef doneness.

Once again YOU have the opportunity to help “grow the show!” A “Patrons Program” is again in place - this involves an amount of money pre-paid by businesses and individuals to purchase art of their own choosing at the Festival.

The success of the Patrons Program demonstrates to the artists the community’s commitment to the Festival and its exhibitors, which in turn works to help attract even more outstanding artists to the Festival.

Job Fair to be held July 26 in Monroe

The Summer 2017 Green County Job Fair will be held on Wednesday, July 26th, at Blackhawk Technical College on the Monroe Campus, located at 210 Fourth Ave., Monroe.

The event will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m. A variety of employers from both the public and private sectors will be eager to hire for over 500 immediate openings in a wide range of fields.

Employers are being added daily and the event is expected to attract 20-30 exhibitors from throughout the Green County region. Employment representatives will be on hand to answer questions about their company and their open positions. Open positions include both full and part-time, and represent virtually all industry sectors, from manufacturing to retail. Juda Fore Fathers Workshop takes Celebration this weekend aim at plight of The 11th annual Juda Fore Fathers Memorial Celebration will be held Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29. Things get underway with a band on Friday night, beer garden, some fun games for adults and pre-registration for our Saturday Poker Run. Saturday kicks off with a Pancake Breakfast held by the Juda Fire Department, followed by the Poker Run, Juda Boy Scouts food stand, Silent Auction, Live Auction, Kid and Bike Games, Door Prizes, Raffles and Juda FFA Alumni Chicken Dinner. Wrapping up the weekend is live music and Beer Garden.

According to The Juda Fore Fathers website, the Juda Fore Fathers are a 501(c)3 organization that formed in 2007 when four Juda men passed away: Roger Dunwiddie, Mike Dunwiddie, Robert Pehl and Jerry Sarbacher, all of Juda, Wis. “The men left behind seven school-age children. With an outpouring of community and business support, in a single afternoon fundraiser, we were able to give each of those children $1500 to help with future college and education costs.

“Since our first event, with the help of many generous donations and sponsorship’s, the Juda Fore Fathers has donated nearly $100,00 to people and organizations with special needs as well scholarship’s for students throughout Green County.”

Vendor space is also available on the south end of the city on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 12 and 13. For a 10 by 10 space, fees are $15 for one day or $25 for both days. A 20 by 20 space for one day is $20 or $35 for two days. Larger spaces are available, as well.

“Stepping On” is a workshop offered in Brodhead by the Green County Aging and Disability Resource Center. The workshop helps older adults prevent falls.

The Brodhead Memorial Public Library, 1207 25th St., Brodhead, will host the workshop sessions.

The sessions will be held weekly, on Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The first session will be held on Thursday, Aug. 3, and sessions will continue until the last session on Thursday, Sept. 14.

Contact the ADRC at (608) 328-9499 to register for the workshop. The workshop carries a $10 fee, and scholarships are available.

Participants will view a display of falls prevention products. The workshop is both for people who have fallen, and for people who fear falling. Participants will leave with more strength, the ability to achieve better balance, and a feeling of confidence and independence as a result of performing various exercises and sharing personal falls experiences as a group.

The program was developed by Dr. Lindy Clemson of Sydney, Australia, to help older adults learn ways to prevent falls. It was brought to the United States by Dr. Jane Mahoney, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and other partners.

The research found that people who complete the workshop have a 31 percent reduced rate of falls.

JEANETTE MARGUERITE (Dennis) Marinelli of Beloit; Jeffrey BURTNESS (Gina) Burtness of Fort Wayne, Ind.;

Jeanette Marguerite Burtness, great-niece Rhonda (Ted) Wenzel age 91, passed away on Wednes- and great-nephew Robert (Angela) day, July 19, 2017 at Rock Ha- Beutow, both of Idaho; five greatven Nursing Home, Janesville. great nieces and nephews, Erin and Jeanette was born May 31, 1926, Eric Rowell, Jessica-Ann Wenzel, the daughter of Elmer and Iva May Linzy & Nicholas Beutow; Laura (Setzer) Burtness.

(Paulson) Rodriguez, who was like She was a lifelong resident of Or- a daughter; caring friends: Dale and fordville and a graduate of Orford- Mary Runaas and Glen and Gerry ville High School. Jeanette started Johnson; and a wealth of other famiout in high school playing saxo- ly and friends.

She was preceded in death by her phone, and played at wedding dances in the band called “Three Jills and a parents, brother Glen & sister-in-law Gerry, infant brother Donald, and a Jeep.”
