LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Help children in Rock County who have been abused or neglected!

Last November, I stood in the courtroom of the Honorable Judge Bates, and took an oath to be a voice for children who have unfortunately been removed from their home because they are victims of abuse or neglect. I was being sworn in as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), which means I have the privilege of being involved in the lives of children who have had to endure abuse and/or neglect from those who should be their protector. The suffering many of these children experienced, may be easier not to think about, but it happens every day in our community, whether we want to acknowledge it or not.

I do this important work to help serve the mission of CASA of Rock County - a non-profit organization that recruits and trains everyday community volunteers to become an advocate for the child - to speak up for them, make sure their needs are being met, and express their wishes to the judge. I do this work because I believe we must each do our best to make sure our most vulnerable community members are safe.

CASA currently has 26 active volun-

teers who are advocating for 40 children in Family Court. Unfortunately, we still have over 65 children, who have been appointed a CASA volunteer, and are on our waiting list. We desperately need more volunteers to serve them all.

Please consider helping CASA of Rock County, raise the funds they need to sustain this important program, and attend the “Putt Fore CASA” golf outing being held at the new Beloit Club on Friday, July 17. BRODHEAD — Cody Christianson is a young man with a mission. That mission is to help fund research in finding a cure for diabetes.

When Cody was a young boy, his grandfather passed away from complications of the disease. His uncle also has it. Diabetes runs in the family, so it really hits home for Christianson. In an effort to raise funds for diabetes research, Cody, with the help of Tim and Jane VanBrock-

BRODHEAD — Members of the Brodhead Optimist Club will host their 4th annual pig roast Sunday, July 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Veterans’ Memorial Park in Brodhead. The event will be held rain or shine. Come and enjoy a meal before the Stateline Playboys concert in the park.

Tickets are available from any Optimist Club member, or may be purchased at the site. Take-outs will also be available. The menu includes juicy pork sandwiches, homemade baked beans, coleslaw, soda, water and chips. The cost is $10. Delicious homemade pies and ice cream will also be available.

He said that about 50 people attend the event, which is ‘a pretty good showing.’

Building off the success of the Bingo nights, this year during Brodhead’s Covered Bridge Days celebration, Cody has arranged for an arts and craft show to be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, in the parking lot at Cardinal Lanes. Using social media, Christianson was able to contact approximately 50 vendors who will display their wares from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A chainsaw woodcarver will also be on hand to display his creations and demonstrate his craft for the entertainment of those attending the craft show. Vendor fees will go to the American Diabetes Association.

Christianson said that he has always been somewhat of an entrepreneur. When he was a middle school student in Brodhead he was the top salesman when it came to selling magazine subscriptions.

He currently works as an account manager at Endries International, and is a student at MATC pursuing a degree in business.

Cody said that technology is the key to much of his success as a fund-raiser, “It makes all of this so much easier.” He is arranging another arts and crafts show in Janesville that will be held in November at the Pontiac Convention Center. Proceeds from that holiday themed show will also go toward funding research by the American Diabetes Association.

Don’t ignore a cat bite, especially if the bite causes a puncture wound that gets swollen and red. If you are bitten, wash the area well with soap and warm water. BELOIT — Luther Valley Lutheran Church, located down a country road a few miles from Orfordville, welcomed Pastor Jack Way as its leader last November. Arriving in the midst of the season of Advent, Pastor Jack is a second career clergy, spending nearly 20 years in manufacturing in the Northern Illinois area.

Originally from Northern Illinois, Jack grew up the oldest of five children. He and his wife, Valerie, were high school friends, but didn’t date until college. They are the parents of three adult daughters, have four grandchildren with another one on the way. Valerie currently works in admissions at Agrace Hospice Care in Janesville.

Orfordville native to serve in South Africa Fund-raiser set for July 26 ORFORDVILLE – Lily Zeich, daughter of Barry and Tana Zeich, Orfordville, has been selected for entrance in a program called Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM).

The program is administered through the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).

As a member of the YAGM, Lily will be serving in South Africa. The ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission invites ELCA young adults between the ages of 21-29 into a year-long journey in international service. YAGM volunteers serve in a variety of areas, including congregational ministry, human rights work, developmental projects, healthcare and youth work.

Each volunteer commits to raising $4,000 to support their year of service. With that in mind, on Sunday, July 26, Luther Valley Church, rural Beloit, will host a fund-raiser following the 9 a.m. service to help Lily.

The day’s events will include a dunk tank – with Lily and others), clowns and other activities. A picnic lunch will be served for a nominal fee. Donations can be made in

RESOLUTION 7-1-15 Resolution Regarding Funding of Wisconsin’s Transportation System WHEREAS, local government in Wisconsin is responsible for about 90% of the road miles in the state; and WHEREAS, Wisconsin’s diverse economy is dependent upon county and town roads as well as city and village streets and transit systems across the state; and WHEREAS, according to a report commissioned by the Local Government Institute (LGI) the condition of Wisconsin’s highways is now in the bottom third of the country; and WHEREAS, state funding for local roads in Wisconsin has failed to keep up with costs over the past several decades which has adversely affected local transportation finances. According to the LGI study, municipal transportation spending has declined from $275 per capita in 2000 to $227 in 2012. In only two states did local transportation spending increase less than in Wisconsin during 2000-2011; and WHEREAS, levy limits do not allow local government to make up for the deterioration of state funding; and WHEREAS, Wisconsin’s over-reliance on bonding eats away at the state’s segregated funding sources – the state gas tax and vehicle registration fees – which increasingly go to pay debt service rather than fund local transportation needs; and WHEREAS, safety is a primary concern and responsibility of local governments across Wisconsin. Unfortunately, according to TRIP, a national non-profit transportation research group, Wisconsin had 347 non-interstate, rural road fatalities in 2013; and WHEREAS, the board recognizes that our state highway and interstate system is the backbone of our surface transportation system and plays a vital role in the economy of Wisconsin. Both local and state roads need to be properly maintained in order for our economy to grow; and WHEREAS, from a competitive standpoint Wisconsin motorists pay significantly less than any of our neighbors when you combine the annual cost of the state gas tax and vehicle registration fees; and WHEREAS, the Transportation Finance and Policy Commission, appointed by the Governor and Legislature clearly found that if Wisconsin does not adjust its user fees, the condition of both our state and local roads will deteriorate significantly over the next decade.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Green County Board of Supervisors, in legal session assembled, that the Board urges the Governor and Legislature to agree upon a sustainable solution: one that includes a responsible level of bonding and adjusts our user fees to adequately fund Wisconsin’s transportation system.

Furthermore, the County Board of Supervisors directs the Clerk to send a copy of this resolution to our State Legislators and to Governor Scott Walker.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that every month that state and local repairs are deferred increases the cost to the taxpayers.

RESOLUTION 7-2-15 RESOLUTION OPPOSING PROPOSED CHANGES IN THE 2015-2017 BIENNIAL BUDGET REGARDING SERVICES CURRENTLY PROVIDED BY THE AGING AND DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTERS (ADRCs) WHEREAS, the ADRCs began in Wisconsin almost 20 years ago with bi-partisan support and have expanded to every county in Wisconsin becoming a national model other states have replicated; and WHEREAS, the ADRC of Southwest Wisconsin located in Green County has been in operation since May of 2000. Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Counties are also included in the Southwest Wisconsin ADRC consortium.

The ADRCs were created to be a “one stop shop” to assist older people and people living with disabilities to better understand their long-term care options, conserve their resources and remain in their homes; and WHEREAS, the customers have consistently reported high levels of satisfaction with their local ADRC services; and WHEREAS, over 95% of the customers that contact the ADRC are seeking options in using personal assets for needed assistance in their home; and WHEREAS, less than 5% of the customer contacts with the ADRC resulted in enrollment into publicly funded long-term care programs; and WHEREAS, the governor’s budget notes that there is no fiscal impact connected to the proposed changes, but includes significant changes that will affect services to those individuals 60 years of age and older and persons with disabilities; and WHEREAS, the ADRC Governing Boards currently provide the customers they serve as well as local officials with direct involvement in planning, oversight and quality. This collaborative partnership has also been successful in developing community partnerships and obtaining local volunteers; and WHEREAS, retaining the local, county operated ADRCs ensures that all citizens, including the most vulnerable, are given full access to needed resources and services. County governance provides local oversight and accountability to the community and its residence; and WHEREAS, one of the key successes of the current ADRC model is that it is the first place to go locally for unbiased information on all aspects of life related to aging and/or disabilities. Dividing ADRC functions would eliminate the ability to provide customers with comprehensive assessments and services, decrease efficiencies and potentially increase costs.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Green County Board of Supervisors, in legal session assembled, that the Board recommends that Wisconsin retain its existing successful and cost-effective models of Family Care, IRIS, and ADRCs, and expand those models statewide to eliminate waiting lists, sustain quality, and achieve further savings; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall forward a copy of this resolution to the Governor of the State of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Counties Association, and Green County’s Legislative Representatives with the request that they assist in this endeavor.

ALBANY — Members of the Albany Lions Club are teaming up with Albany School District and invite the community to help them “Stuff the Bus”* with school supplies on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 5 – 9 p.m. at the Albany Lions Club building located at 402 N Cincinnati Street.

All donations are welcome; specific lists of needed supplies are available at Albany Mini Mart, New Image Salon, Town Bank, and Sugar River General Store.

According to Dean Houlberg, project chairperson of Albany Lions Club, “The donated school supplies will make a difference in the lives of our local children and will give them the supplies they need to be successful in school.”

Steve Guenther, Albany school superintendant, said “the donated school supplies will be given to students in need through their teachers’ requests”.

Foundation fundraising chair, Forrest Ross, stated, “Thanks to the support we receive for our golf outing, last year we were able to offer five grants for a total of $3,500 to support excellent youth programs in our community.”

This year’s golf outing will be held at Decatur Lake Country Club in Brodhead on Saturday, Aug. 1, and will be a best ball, scramble format with a shot gun start at 11:30 a.m. The cost of $70 per person or $280 per foursome will include lunch, 18 holes of golf, golf cart and a ticket to dinner at the Lions Club Steak Fry in Albany. There will also be hole prizes and a raffle held during the golfing.

“The Albany Community has been incredibly supportive of the Foundation and we look forward to another wonderful event this year”, says Ross. “This year we could use help with volunteers, sponsors or golfers. Organizers welcome area residents to join them for a fun-filled weekend of bands, food, beverages, live and silent auctions, games and prizes for adults and children, plus their main event – a Poker Run for bikes, cars, trucks, or whatever anyone drives.

The organization’s mission statement is to: Unite area communities and raise funds for community projects, community youth, and persons or organizations in need, in the memory of our community fore fathers. the event. Children under the age of four are free.and the Juda FFA Alumni will hold its annual chicken BBQ meal on Saturday from noon to 7 p.m.

Also on Saturday, July 25, the Youth Group/High School Sunday School Class of the Zion United Methodist Church of Juda will hold a bake sale at the Sugar River Bank in Juda from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

Funds raised will be used to support their mission project of supporting two young children they sponsor. Yi is sponsored through Holt International, and Zebiba, who is from Ethiopia, is sponsored through Food For the Hungry.

Live and silent auctions will be held on both Saturday and Sunday.

New Horizons 4-H Club members meet before the Fair

JUDA — The New Horizons 4-H Club met Sunday, July 5.

The meeting was brought to order at 1:35 p.m. by President Brittney Vine. The thought for the day was “Each day is a little life. Live it to its fullest.” Cloverbuds Jaydon Brauer and Shannon Day led the flag salute. Royce Brauer led the club pledge. Roll call was answered by giving a computer slang.

A motion to approve the minutes from the last meeting was made by Jennifer Swedlund.

Jaydon seconded it. Connor Brauer gave the treasurer’s report. Jennifer moved to approve. Shannon seconded it.

Both motions carried. Leader Ben Swedlund helped the Cloverbuds make motions. Connor gave a report on the Junior Leaders meeting.

Old business was discussed.

Updates were given for the Food PantryChallenge, the puzzle piece, and more. Members attended the mandatory auction

meeting and a superintendents meeting.

New business was brought up. Members who want to perform on the youth in action stage need to contact Lukas Wymer.

Fair schedules were handed out to families. Members were reminded to think about becoming an officer for the new year.

We talked about donating to the church’s ice cream social. Leaders will contact the church to see what they need.

Announcements were read.

Our next meeting will be Aug. 9.

Connor gave talks for computer, child development, and self determined. Royce talked about business cards and a card he made for computer and a game he plans to make for child development. Jaena shared her self determined project. Maylee Brauer told us her roles in her family. Royce sang “Chains.”

5 1 0 2 s Fair Day Join Us For the Rock County 4-H Fair in Janesville Tuesday, July 28 – Sunday, Aug. 2 As the oldest 4-H fair in the United States, the Rock County 4-H Fair in Janesville, Wis. has plenty to offer each and every visitor. From the numerous animals to the carnival and every unique exhibit in between, the Rock County 4-H Fair allows visitors one special week a year to experience the many projects and learn from the county’s youth. The Rock County 4-H Fair is constantly evolving; showcasing amazing entertainment on its main stage and a variety of activities for the whole family to enjoy year after year.

Fair History In 1920, four county-wide 4-H Clubs were formed as corn, dairy calf, sheep and baby beef clubs. In 1928, the 4-H Club movement was the largest in the State of Wisconsin.

Township clubs were formed with over 700 (rural only) boys and girls. In 1930, the Rock County 4-H Fair was established on part of what is now the present fairgrounds site.

The Rock County 4-H Fair was the first 4-H Fair in the United States and remains the largest youth fair to this day. The Rock County 4-H Fair is a nonprofit association. The Board of Directors consists of four officers and 9 directors. Three new directors are elected each year by the membership for a three year term. The Board of Directors are responsible for the operation of the Rock County

4-H Fair. The association has two year-round employees, one full time and one part time. The fairgrounds is owned, operated and maintained by the County of Rock. The Fair Association is given use of the grounds for the month of July each year for the purpose of operating a youth fair. Mission Statement Our Mission is to provide learning and leadership opportunities for the youth of Rock County.

FAIR MUSEUM We encourage you to visit our Fair Museum during the fair week to see extensive items from fair’s past! The museum is open 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily during the fair.

Lexi Olsen, a member of the Newark Pioneers 4-H Club, won five trophies at the Rock County 4-H Fair last year. Lexi’s entries earned: champion junior breed doe, reserve champion junior Alpine doe, junior doe overall (grand champion), junior Saanen doe and trophy winner for grades nine and 10.

Grandstand Policies & Rules There will not be seating permitted in the lawn area in front of the main stage until sound checks are completed and/or the artist has agreed we can open the gates the performance.

Blankets may not be used to save seats in the lawn area. Chairs of any kind are not allowed in any areas of the grandstand.

The grandstand will be open for seating the entire day and evening - unless otherwise requested by the entertainer or reserved seats are being sold for the show.

During sound checks for the show, Everyone may be asked to leave the grandstand until they are completed.

Those needing wheelchair seating should check with the deputy on duty in the wheelchair seating area.

There is limited seating and it will be available on a first come, first serve basis except for the concerts which will feature reserved seats and general admission seats. For those concerts, general admission tickets will be first-come, first-serve for seating selection in those areas; reserved seats will be reserved.

Wheelchair seating will be available for one person and one attendant.

Only those needing the wheelchair seating and one attendant may use the designated area. Others accompanying them should find seating in the regular areas. Entrance to the grandstand acts is included in the price of the gate ticket to the fair grounds - EXCEPT FOR CONCERTS WHICH INDICATE A SEPARATE ADMISSION CHARGE. Tickets must be purchased for those concerts.

Those requiring handicap seating for the paid concerts must purchase a general admission seat for both themselves and their one attendant.

Tickets for paid concerts are non-refundable - rain or shine. If you have any questions, please contact us for policy clarification. Note: for some shows there will be a separate ticket charge - tickets will be sold online.

JUDA — At the board meeting held Thursday, July 9, night the Juda School Board: Heard a report from James Pickett on the new Juda School website. The site will be up and running in late fall.

Mrs. Davis reported the first session of Summer School ended today and the second session will begin on August 3. The schools internet service has been updated and is now much faster.

Approved a 66.0301 agreement with Monticello for Library Media Specialist for the 2015/2016 school year.

OBITUARY Robert Ninneman

BRODHEAD — Robert “Gus” Treat Ninneman, age 81, of Brodhead, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2015, at his home.

He was born May 26, 1934, in Kansas, Mo., the son of Edward and Harriet (Treat) Ninneman.

He married Kathleen Phillips on June 5, 1975, in Madison.

Gus had worked for many years for the Ohio Medical Co. as a computer operator. Gus was a volunteer for Beachwatchers in Washington State. In California, he was active in the Democratic Party and also in efforts supporting immigration reform. He was also a dedicated volunteer for Sequoia and Riverlands Trust, a land conservation organization. He and his wife were featured in a ‘volunteer of the week article in the Visalia Times-Delta newspaper.

All his life, Gus had been an avid, and excellent golfer, and a complete weather nerd, following and comparing many sources of weather predictions for loca-

tions all over the country.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen, Brodhead; two daughters, Gale (James) Pandow, Brodhead, Diane (Kevin Steinmetz) Koletzke, Visalia, Calif.; a son, Karl (Susan) Wigdal, Belleville; a sister, Marcella Colarich, Walnut Grove, Calif.; and a grandson, Brandon Warczak, Brodhead. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Per Robert’s request, there will be no funeral service. Memorials may be made to Sequoia Riverlands Trust, 427 Garden St, Visalia, CA 93227.
